In this work seismic upgrading of existing masonry structures by means of hysteretic ADAS dampers is treated. ADAS are installed on external concrete walls, which are built parallel to the building, and then linked to the building's slab by means of steel rod connection system. In order to assess the effectiveness of the intervention, a parametric study considering variation of damper main features has been conducted. To this aim, the concepts of equivalent linear system (ELS) or equivalent viscous damping are deepen. Simplified equivalent linear model results are then checked respect results of the yielding structures. Two alternative displacement based methods for damper design are herein proposed. Both methods have been validated through non linear time history analyses with spectrum compatible accelerograms. Finally ADAS arrangement for the non conventional implementation is proposed.

The Scilla rock avalanche occurred on 6 February 1783 along the coast of the Calabria region (southern Italy), close to the Messina Strait. It was triggered by a mainshock of the Terremoto delle Calabrie seismic sequence, and it induced a tsunami wave responsible for more than 1500 casualties along the neighboring Marina Grande beach. The main goal of this work is the application of semi-analtycal and numerical models to simulate this event. The first one is a MATLAB code expressly created for this work that solves the equations of motion for sliding particles on a two-dimensional surface through a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The second one is a code developed by the Tsunami Research Team of the Department of Physics and Astronomy (DIFA) of the Bologna University that describes a slide as a chain of blocks able to interact while sliding down over a slope and adopts a Lagrangian point of view. A wide description of landslide phenomena and in particular of landslides induced by earthquakes and with tsunamigenic potential is proposed in the first part of the work. Subsequently, the physical and mathematical background is presented; in particular, a detailed study on derivatives discratization is provided. Later on, a description of the dynamics of a point-mass sliding on a surface is proposed together with several applications of numerical and analytical models over ideal topographies. In the last part, the dynamics of points sliding on a surface and interacting with each other is proposed. Similarly, different application on an ideal topography are shown. Finally, the applications on the 1783 Scilla event are shown and discussed.

We discuss the computation of the kaon and D meson masses in the N_f = 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD setup, where explicit heavy flavor and parity breaking occurs at finite lattice spacing. We present three methods suitable in this context and verify their consistency.

One observed vibration mode for Tainter gate skinplates involves the bending of the skinplate about a horizontal nodal line. This vibration mode can be approximated as a streamwise rotational vibration about the horizontal nodal line. Such a streamwise rotational vibration of a Tainter gate skinplate must push away water from the portion of the skinplate rotating into the reservoir and draw water toward the gate over that portion of the skinplate receding from the reservoir. The induced pressure is termed the push-and-draw pressure. In the present paper, this push-and-draw pressure is analyzed using the potential theory developed for dissipative wave radiation problems. In the initial analysis, the usual circular-arc skinplate is replaced by a vertical, flat, rigid weir plate so that theoretical calculations can be undertaken. The theoretical push-and-draw pressure is used in the derivation of the non-dimensional equation of motion of the flow-induced rotational vibrations. Non-dimensionalization of the equation of motion permits the identification of the dimensionless equivalent added mass and the wave radiation damping coefficients. Free vibration tests of a vertical, flat, rigid weir plate model, both in air and in water, were performed to measure the equivalent added mass and the wave radiation damping coefficients. Experimental results compared favorably with the theoretical predictions, thus validating the theoretical analysis of the equivalent added mass and wave radiation damping coefficients as a prediction tool for flow-induced vibrations. Subsequently, the equation of motion of an inclined circular-arc skinplate was developed by incorporating a pressure correction coefficient, which permits empirical adaptation of the results from the hydrodynamic pressure analysis of the vertical, flat, rigid weir plate. Results from in-water free vibration tests on a 1/31-scale skinplate model of the Folsom Dam Tainter gate are used to demonstrate the utility of the equivalent added mass coefficient.

Statins have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties in addition to lipid-lowering effects. The present study evaluated the effect of atorvastatin added to interferon beta-1b in multiple sclerosis (MS) in a multicenter, randomized, parallel-group, rater-blinded study performed in eight Swiss hospitals. Seventy-seven patients with relapsing-remitting MS started interferon beta-1b every other day. After 3 months, they were randomized 1:1 to receive atorvastatin 40 mg/day or not in addition to interferon beta-1b until month 15. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with new lesions on T2-weighted images at month 15 compared to baseline at month three. At study end, the proportion of patients with new lesions on T2-weighted images was equal in both groups (odds ratio 1.14; 95 % CI 0.36-3.56; p = 0.81). All predefined secondary endpoints including number of new lesions and total lesion volume on T2-weighted images, total number of new Gd-enhancing lesions on T1-weighted images, total brain volume, volume of grey matter, volume of white matter, EDSS, MSFC, relapse rate, time to first relapse, number of relapse-free patients and neutralizing antibodies did not show any significant differences (all p values >0.1). Transient elevations of liver enzymes were more frequent with atorvastatin (p = 0.02). In conclusion, atorvastatin 40 mg/day in addition to interferon beta-1b did not have a beneficial effect on relapsing-remitting MS compared to interferon beta-1b monotherapy over a 12-month period.

The progress in molecular genetics in animal breeding is moderately effective as compared to traditional animal breeding using quantitative genetic approaches. There is an extensive disparity between the number of reported quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and their linked genetic variations in cattle, pig, and chicken. The identification of causative mutations affecting quantitative traits is still very challenging and hampered by the cloudy relationship between genotype and phenotype. There are relatively few reports in which a successful identification of a causative mutation for an animal production trait was demonstrated. The examples that have attracted considerable attention from the animal breeding community are briefly summarized and presented in a table. In this mini-review, the recent progress in mapping quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) are reviewed, including the ABCG2 gene mutation that underlies a QTL for fat and protein content and the ovine MSTN gene mutation that causes muscular hypertrophy in Texel sheep. It is concluded that the progress in molecular genetics might facilitate the elucidation of the genetic architecture of QTLs, so that also the high-hanging fruits can be harvested in order to contribute to efficient and sustainable animal production.

Diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has a large number of potential clinical applications in the female and male pelvis and can easily be added to any routine MR protocol. In the female pelvis, DW imaging allows improvement of staging in endometrial and cervical cancer, especially in locally advanced disease and in patients in whom contrast medium administration should be avoided. It can also be helpful in characterizing complex adnexal masses and in depicting recurrent tumor after treatment of various gynecologic malignancies. DW imaging shows promising results in monitoring treatment response in patients undergoing radiation therapy of cervical cancer. An increase in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of responders precedes changes in size and may therefore allow early assessment of treatment success. In the male pelvis, the detection of prostate cancer in the peripheral zone is relatively easier than in the central gland based on the underlying ADC values, whereas overlapping values reported in the central gland still need further research. DW imaging might also be applied in the noninvasive evaluation of bladder cancer to differentiate between superficial and muscle-invasive tumors. Initial promising results have been reported in differentiating benign from malignant pelvic lymph nodes based on the ADC values; however, larger-scale studies will be needed to allow the detection of lymph node metastases in an individual patient. Prerequisites for successfully performing DW imaging of the female and male pelvis are standardization of the DW imaging technique, including the choice of b values, administration of an antiperistaltic drug, and comparison of DW findings with those of morphologic MR imaging.
