In the Arctic, under-ice primary production is limited to summer months and is not only restricted by ice thickness and snow cover but also by the stratification of the water column, which constrains nutrient supply for algal growth. RV Polarstern visited the ice-covered Eastern Central basins between 82 to 89°N and 30 to 130°E in summer 2012 when Arctic sea ice declined to a record minimum. During this cruise, we observed a widespread deposition of ice algal biomass of on average 9 g C per m**2 to the deep-sea floor of the Central Arctic basins. Data from this cruise will contribute to assessing the impact of current climate change on Arctic productivity, biodiversity, and ecological function.

The NA64-Mesozooplankton dataset contains biogeochemistry and mesozooplankton data collected in a series of 9 cruises in the Northern Adriatic completed from January 1965 to September 1965 monthly, and December 1965. Biogeochemistry sampling was undertaken using 5L Nansen bottles fired at 0m, 5m, 10m, 20m, 30m and/or bottom depths. The dataset includes 709 samples analysed for nitrate, phosphate, temperature, salinity and density. Mesozooplankton sampling was undertaken at the same locations as for biogeochemistry, using two different net (Hensen non-closing and Appstein closing net). The dataset includes 146 samples analysed for mesozooplankton composition (at higher taxonomic level), abundance and volume settlement. After sedimentation and volume measurement, the fish larva and fish eggs were extracted from samples (egss of Engraulis encrasicholus were determined). Chaetognaths were partly isolated. Identification at higher taxonomic level of zooplankters was completed. Taxonomic identification was done at Smithonian Mediterranean Centre in Salambo. The GEMS-GLORI register, circulated by UNEP for review in 1996, lists 555 world major rivers discharging to oceans (Q > 10 km**3/year, or A > 10 000 km**2, or sediment discharge > 5Mt/year, or basin population >5M people). Up to 48 river attributes are listed, including major ions and nutrients (C, N, P) in both dissolved, particulate, organic and inorganic forms. For many rivers, two or three sets of data are provided with relevant periods of records and references. Although half of the selected rivers are not yet documented for water quality, most of the first 40 rivers are well described (Irrawady, Zambezi, Ogooue, Magdalena, are noted exceptions). Altogether about 10 000 individual data from 500 references are listed. The global coverage in terms of river discharge and/or drainage area ranges from 40 to 67% for most major water quality attributes but drops to 25% for some organic and/or particulate forms of N and P. Planned development of the register includes collection of information on particulate chemistry and data on endorheic rivers and selected tributaries.

The differential solubility of ferromanganese oxides can lead to stratigraphic separation of iron and manganese. Results of chemical analysis of a sequence of ferromanganese nodules overlying iron-rich crusts in northern Green Bay show that selec¬tive ion transport is important in concentrating manganese and associated trace elements near the oxygenated water-sediment interface. Manganese carbonate, which cements ferromanganese nodules, occurs in dark-gray silty sands that are located adjacent to the organic-rich muds of southern Green Bay. These muds contain an average of approximately 3.5 ppm (6x10-5M) interstitial Mn with 2.8 meq/l carbonate alkalinity. Thermodynamic calculation shows that interstitial water approaches equilibrium with MnCO3 in the upper 10 cm of sediment. This carbonate has a composition (Mn73Ca22Fe5)CO3 and has been identified as rhodochrosite.

This chapter deals with the evolution of clay minerals in Cenozoic sediments from DSDP Sites 541, 542, and 543 east of the Lesser Antilles arc on and near the edge of the Barbados Ridge complex. Throughout the Miocene, smectite exceeds all other minerals at all three sites. From the Pliocene onward, however, illite becomes dominant and chlorite well-represented. Quantitative mineral differences among the three sites are significant up until the top of the Pliocene. But in the Pleistocene, the mineralogical composition becomes exactly the same at all sites. Data from the Caribbean region are used to interpret the results obtained. These involve two supply sources: (1) the adjacent islands that supply smectites and kaolinites, and (2) South America, which is the major source of illite and chlorite. The apparent northward migration of illite and chlorite on the Barbados Ridge complex and the changes reported in the quantitative distribution of the four clay minerals are most probably controlled by northerly currents along the northern coast of South America.
