We demonstrate a compact tunable filter based on a novel microfluidic single beam Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The optical path difference occurs during propagation across a fluid-air interface ( meniscus), the inherent mobility of which provides tunability. Optical losses are minimized by optimizing the meniscus shape through surface treatment. Optical spectra are compared to a 3D beam propagation method simulations and good agreement is found. Tunability, low insertion loss and strength of the resonance are well reproduced. The device performance displays a resonance depth of - 28 dB and insertion loss maintained at - 4 dB. A number of systematic conservation planning tools are available to aid in making land use decisions. Given the increasing worldwide use and application of reserve design tools, including measures of site irreplaceability, it is essential that methodological differences and their potential effect on conservation planning outcomes are understood. We compared the irreplaceability of sites for protecting ecosystems within the Brigalow Belt Bioregion, Queensland, Australia, using two alternative reserve system design tools, Marxan and C-Plan. We set Marxan to generate multiple reserve systems that met targets with minimal area; the first scenario ignored spatial objectives, while the second selected compact groups of areas. Marxan calculates the irreplaceability of each site as the proportion of solutions in which it occurs for each of these set scenarios. In contrast, C-Plan uses a statistical estimate of irreplaceability as the likelihood that each site is needed in all combinations of sites that satisfy the targets. We found that sites containing rare ecosystems are almost always irreplaceable regardless of the method. Importantly, Marxan and C-Plan gave similar outcomes when spatial objectives were ignored. Marxan with a compactness objective defined twice as much area as irreplaceable, including many sites with relatively common ecosystems. However, targets for all ecosystems were met using a similar amount of area in C-Plan and Marxan, even with compactness. The importance of differences in the outcomes of using the two methods will depend on the question being addressed; in general, the use of two or more complementary tools is beneficial.

The passage number and origin of two populations of Caco-2 cells influence their enterocyte-like characteristics. Caco-2 cells of passage number >90 from Novartis pharmaceutical company possess higher levels of expression of alkaline phosphatase and P-glycoprotein and a greater cellular uptake of Gly-1.-Pro than those of passage number <40 from the American Type Tissue Culture collection. High P-gp expressing Caco-2 cells have been developed through stepwise selection of the cells with doxonibicin. This newly-developed cell line (hereafter referred to as Type I) possesses approximately twice as much P-gp protein than non-exposed cells, restricts the transepithelial transport of vincristine in the apical-to-basolateral direction whilst facilitating its transport in the reverse direction and accumulates less vincristine than non-exposed cells. There is no apparent evidence of the co-existence of the multidrug resistance protein (MIT) in Type I cells to account for the above-listed observations. Stopping the exposure for more than 28 days decreases the P-gp protein expression in previously doxorubicin-exposed Type I Caco-2 cells and reduces the magnitude of vincristine transepithelial fluxes in both directions to the levels that are almost similar to those of non-exposed cells. Exposing Caco-2 cells to 0.25 JAM la, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 induces their expression of cytochrome P450 3A4 protein to the level that is equivalent to that from isolated human jejunal cells. Under the same treatment, doxorubiein-exposed (Type I) cells metabolise naidazolam poorly and less extensively compared to non-exposed cells, suggesting that there is no such co-regulation of P-gp and CYP3A4 in Caco-2 cells. However, there is evidence which suggests CYP3A metabolises mida_zolam into 1- and 4-hydroxymidazolam, the latter may possibly be a P-gp substrate and is transported extracellularly by P-gp, supporting the hypothesis of P-gp-CYP3A4 synergistic roles in keeping xenobiotics out of the body. Doxoru.bicin-exposed (Type I) cells are less effective in translocating L-proline and glycyl-L-proline across the cell mono layers.

A novel approach to optical subcarrier multiplexing with compact spectrum is demonstrated using a 42.6 Gbit/s AM-PSK payload and 2.5 Gbit/s NRZ label. In this implementation, the payload introduces a 4.8 dB penalty on the label receiver sensitivity, and the label causes <1 dB penalty on the payload receiver sensitivity.

Purpose: To study the mechanical and dynamic swelling properties of grewia gum, evaluate its compression behaviour and determine the effect of drying methods on its properties. Methods: Compacts (500 mg) of both freeze-dried and air-dried grewia gum were separately prepared by compression on a potassium bromide (KBr) press at different pressures and subjected to Heckel analysis. Swelling studies were performed using 200 mg compacts of the gum (freeze-dried or air-dried) compressed on a KBr press. The mechanical properties of the films of the gum prepared by casting 1 % dispersions of the gum were evaluated using Hounsfield tensiometer. The mechanical properties of grewia gum films were compared with films of pullulan and guar gum which were similarly prepared. The effect of temperature on the water uptake of the compacts was studied and the data subjected to Schott's analysis. Results: Drying conditions had no effect on the yield pressure of the gum compacts as both air-dried and freeze-dried fractions had a yield pressure of 322.6 MPa. The plots based on Schott's equation for the grewia gum samples showed that both samples (freeze-dried and air-dried) exhibited long swelling times. Grewia gum film had a tensile strength of 19.22±3.61 MPa which was similar to that of pullulan films (p > 0.05). It had an elastic modulus of 2.13±0.12 N/mm2 which was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those of pullulan and guar gum with elastic moduli of 3.33±0.00 and 2.86±0.00 N/mm2, respectively. Conclusion: The type of drying method used does not have any effect on the degree of plasticity of grewia gum compacts. Grewia gum obtained by either drying method exhibited extended swelling duration. Matrix tablet formulations of the gum will likely swell slowly and promote sustained release of drug. © Pharmacotherapy Group, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin, Benin City.

We are able to give a complete description of four-dimensional Lie algebras g which satisfy the tame-compatible question of Donaldson for all almost complex structures J on g are completely described. As a consequence, examples are given of (non-unimodular) four-dimensional Lie algebras with almost complex structures which are tamed but not compatible with symplectic forms.? Note that Donaldson asked his question for compact four-manifolds. In that context, the problem is still open, but it is believed that any tamed almost complex structure is in fact compatible with a symplectic form. In this presentation, I will define the basic objects involved and will give some insights on the proof. The key for the proof is translating the problem into a Linear Algebra setting. This is a joint work with Dr. Draghici.

This paper deals with the conceptual design of decoupled, compact, and monolithic XYZ compliant parallel manipulators (CPMs): CUBEs. Position spaces of compliant P (P: prismatic) joints are first discussed, which are represented by circles about the translational directions. A design method of monolithic XYZ CPMs is then proposed in terms of both the kinematic substitution method and the position spaces. Three types of monolithic XYZ CPMs are finally designed using the proposed method with the help of three classes of kinematical decoupled 3-DOF (degree of freedom) translational parallel mechanisms (TPMs). These monolithic XYZ CPMs include a 3-PPP XYZ CPM composed of identical parallelogram modules (a previously reported design), a novel 3-PPPR (R: revolute) XYZ CPM composed of identical compliant four-beam modules, and a novel 3-PPPRR XYZ CPM. The latter two monolithic designs also have extended lives. It is shown that the proposed design method can be used to design other decoupled and compact XYZ CPMs by using the concept of position spaces, and the resulting XYZ CPM is the most compact one when the fixed ends of the three actuated compliant P joints thereof overlap.
