The 1d extended Hubbard model with soft-shoulder potential has proved itself to be very difficult to study due its non solvability and to competition between terms of the Hamiltonian. Given this, we tried to investigate its phase diagram for filling n=2/5 and range of soft-shoulder potential r=2 by using Machine Learning techniques. That led to a rich phase diagram; calling U, V the parameters associated to the Hubbard potential and the soft-shoulder potential respectively, we found that for V<5 and U>3 the system is always in Tomonaga Luttinger Liquid phase, then becomes a Cluster Luttinger Liquid for 5and V), and finally undergoes a general crystallization or V>7, with a quasi-perfect crystal in the U<3V/2 and U>5 region. Finally we found that for U<5 and V>2-3 the system shall maintain the Cluster Luttinger Liquid structure, with a residual in-block single particle mobility.

As a consequence of the diffusion of next generation sequencing techniques, metagenomics databases have become one of the most promising repositories of information about features and behavior of microorganisms. One of the subjects that can be studied from those data are bacteria populations. Next generation sequencing techniques allow to study the bacteria population within an environment by sampling genetic material directly from it, without the needing of culturing a similar population in vitro and observing its behavior. As a drawback, it is quite complex to extract information from those data and usually there is more than one way to do that; AMR is no exception. In this study we will discuss how the quantified AMR, which regards the genotype of the bacteria, can be related to the bacteria phenotype and its actual level of resistance against the specific substance. In order to have a quantitative information about bacteria genotype, we will evaluate the resistome from the read libraries, aligning them against CARD database. With those data, we will test various machine learning algorithms for predicting the bacteria phenotype. The samples that we exploit should resemble those that could be obtained from a natural context, but are actually produced by a read libraries simulation tool. In this way we are able to design the populations with bacteria of known genotype, so that we can relay on a secure ground truth for training and testing our algorithms.

In recent times, a significant research effort has been focused on how deformable linear objects (DLOs) can be manipulated for real world applications such as assembly of wiring harnesses for the automotive and aerospace sector. This represents an open topic because of the difficulties in modelling accurately the behaviour of these objects and simulate a task involving their manipulation, considering a variety of different scenarios. These problems have led to the development of data-driven techniques in which machine learning techniques are exploited to obtain reliable solutions. However, this approach makes the solution difficult to be extended, since the learning must be replicated almost from scratch as the scenario changes. It follows that some model-based methodology must be introduced to generalize the results and reduce the training effort accordingly. The objective of this thesis is to develop a solution for the DLOs manipulation to assemble a wiring harness for the automotive sector based on adaptation of a base trajectory set by means of reinforcement learning methods. The idea is to create a trajectory planning software capable of solving the proposed task, reducing where possible the learning time, which is done in real time, but at the same time presenting suitable performance and reliability. The solution has been implemented on a collaborative 7-DOFs Panda robot at the Laboratory of Automation and Robotics of the University of Bologna. Experimental results are reported showing how the robot is capable of optimizing the manipulation of the DLOs gaining experience along the task repetition, but showing at the same time a high success rate from the very beginning of the learning phase.

Sales prediction plays a huge role in modern business strategies. One of it's many use cases revolves around estimating the effects of promotions. While promotions generally have a positive effect on sales of the promoted product, they can also have a negative effect on those of other products. This phenomenon is calles sales cannibalisation. Sales cannibalisation can pose a big problem to sales forcasting algorithms. A lot of times, these algorithms focus on sales over time of a single product in a single store (a couple). This research focusses on using knowledge of a product across multiple different stores. To achieve this, we applied transfer learning on a neural model developed by Kantar Consulting to demo an approach to estimating the effect of cannibalisation. Our results show a performance increase of between 10 and 14 percent. This is a very good and desired result, and Kantar will use the approach when integrating this test method into their actual systems.

The following thesis aims to investigate the issues concerning the maintenance of a Machine Learning model over time, both about the versioning of the model itself and the data on which it is trained and about data monitoring tools and their distribution. The themes of Data Drift and Concept Drift were then explored and the performance of some of the most popular techniques in the field of Anomaly detection, such as VAE, PCA, and Monte Carlo Dropout, were evaluated.

The emissions estimation, both during homologation and standard driving, is one of the new challenges that automotive industries have to face. The new European and American regulation will allow a lower and lower quantity of Carbon Monoxide emission and will require that all the vehicles have to be able to monitor their own pollutants production. Since numerical models are too computationally expensive and approximated, new solutions based on Machine Learning are replacing standard techniques. In this project we considered a real V12 Internal Combustion Engine to propose a novel approach pushing Random Forests to generate meaningful prediction also in extreme cases (extrapolation, very high frequency peaks, noisy instrumentation etc.). The present work proposes also a data preprocessing pipeline for strongly unbalanced datasets and a reinterpretation of the regression problem as a classification problem in a logarithmic quantized domain. Results have been evaluated for two different models representing a pure interpolation scenario (more standard) and an extrapolation scenario, to test the out of bounds robustness of the model. The employed metrics take into account different aspects which can affect the homologation procedure, so the final analysis will focus on combining all the specific performances together to obtain the overall conclusions.

Combinatorial decision and optimization problems belong to numerous applications, such as logistics and scheduling, and can be solved with various approaches. Boolean Satisfiability and Constraint Programming solvers are some of the most used ones and their performance is significantly influenced by the model chosen to represent a given problem. This has led to the study of model reformulation methods, one of which is tabulation, that consists in rewriting the expression of a constraint in terms of a table constraint. To apply it, one should identify which constraints can help and which can hinder the solving process. So far this has been performed by hand, for example in MiniZinc, or automatically with manually designed heuristics, in Savile Row. Though, it has been shown that the performances of these heuristics differ across problems and solvers, in some cases helping and in others hindering the solving procedure. However, recent works in the field of combinatorial optimization have shown that Machine Learning (ML) can be increasingly useful in the model reformulation steps. This thesis aims to design a ML approach to identify the instances for which Savile Row’s heuristics should be activated. Additionally, it is possible that the heuristics miss some good tabulation opportunities, so we perform an exploratory analysis for the creation of a ML classifier able to predict whether or not a constraint should be tabulated. The results reached towards the first goal show that a random forest classifier leads to an increase in the performances of 4 different solvers. The experimental results in the second task show that a ML approach could improve the performance of a solver for some problem classes.

The comfort level of the seat has a major effect on the usage of a vehicle; thus, car manufacturers have been working on elevating car seat comfort as much as possible. However, still, the testing and evaluation of comfort are done using exhaustive trial and error testing and evaluation of data. In this thesis, we resort to machine learning and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to develop a fully automated approach. Even though this approach has its advantages in minimizing time and using a large set of data, it takes away the degree of freedom of the engineer on making decisions. The focus of this study is on filling the gap in a two-step comfort level evaluation which used pressure mapping with body regions to evaluate the average pressure supported by specific body parts and the Self-Assessment Exam (SAE) questions on evaluation of the person’s interest. This study has created a machine learning algorithm that works on giving a degree of freedom to the engineer in making a decision when mapping pressure values with body regions using ANN. The mapping is done with 92% accuracy and with the help of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that facilitates the process during the testing time of comfort level evaluation of the car seat, which decreases the duration of the test analysis from days to hours.

PURPOSE: To determine the mean critical fusion frequency and the short-term fluctuation, to analyze the influence of age, gender, and the learning effect in healthy subjects undergoing flicker perimetry. METHODS: Study 1 - 95 healthy subjects underwent flicker perimetry once in one eye. Mean critical fusion frequency values were compared between genders, and the influence of age was evaluated using linear regression analysis. Study 2 - 20 healthy subjects underwent flicker perimetry 5 times in one eye. The first 3 sessions were separated by an interval of 1 to 30 days, whereas the last 3 sessions were performed within the same day. The first 3 sessions were used to investigate the presence of a learning effect, whereas the last 3 tests were used to calculate short-term fluctuation. RESULTS: Study 1 - Linear regression analysis demonstrated that mean global, foveal, central, and critical fusion frequency per quadrant significantly decreased with age (p<0.05).There were no statistically significant differences in mean critical fusion frequency values between males and females (p>0.05), with the exception of the central area and inferonasal quadrant (p=0.049 and p=0.011, respectively), where the values were lower in females. Study 2 - Mean global (p=0.014), central (p=0.008), and peripheral (p=0.03) critical fusion frequency were significantly lower in the first session compared to the second and third sessions. The mean global short-term fluctuation was 5.06±1.13 Hz, the mean interindividual and intraindividual variabilities were 11.2±2.8% and 6.4±1.5%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that, in healthy subjects, critical fusion frequency decreases with age, that flicker perimetry is associated with a learning effect, and that a moderately high short-term fluctuation is expected.

In this paper, nonlinear dynamic equations of a wheeled mobile robot are described in the state-space form where the parameters are part of the state (angular velocities of the wheels). This representation, known as quasi-linear parameter varying, is useful for control designs based on nonlinear H(infinity) approaches. Two nonlinear H(infinity) controllers that guarantee induced L(2)-norm, between input (disturbances) and output signals, bounded by an attenuation level gamma, are used to control a wheeled mobile robot. These controllers are solved via linear matrix inequalities and algebraic Riccati equation. Experimental results are presented, with a comparative study among these robust control strategies and the standard computed torque, plus proportional-derivative, controller.

Three main models of parameter setting have been proposed: the Variational model proposed by Yang (2002; 2004), the Structured Acquisition model endorsed by Baker (2001; 2005), and the Very Early Parameter Setting (VEPS) model advanced by Wexler (1998). The VEPS model contends that parameters are set early. The Variational model supposes that children employ statistical learning mechanisms to decide among competing parameter values, so this model anticipates delays in parameter setting when critical input is sparse, and gradual setting of parameters. On the Structured Acquisition model, delays occur because parameters form a hierarchy, with higher-level parameters set before lower-level parameters. Assuming that children freely choose the initial value, children sometimes will miss-set parameters. However when that happens, the input is expected to trigger a precipitous rise in one parameter value and a corresponding decline in the other value. We will point to the kind of child language data that is needed in order to adjudicate among these competing models.

This paper presents a case study that explores how operator digging style juxtaposes with mechanical capability for a class of hydraulic mining excavators. The relationships between actuator and digging forces are developed and these are used to identify the excavator's capability to apply forces in various directions. Two distinct modes of operation are examined to see how they relate to the mechanical capabilities of the linkage and to establish if one has merit over the other. It is found that one of these styles results in lower loading of the machine.
