The informational value of incumbency

This paper proposes an argument that explains incumbency advantage without recurring to the collective irresponsibility of legislatures. For that purpose, we exploit the informational value of incumbency: incumbency confers voters information about governing politicians not available from challengers. Because there are many reasons for high reelection rates different from incumbency status, we propose a measure of incumbency advantage that improves the use of pure reelection success. We also study the relationship between incumbency advantage and ideological and selection biases. An important implication of our analysis is that the literature linking incumbency and legislature irresponsibility most likely provides an overestimation of the latter.

Evolutionary rates of Jurassic ammonites in relation to sea-level fluctuations

An analysis is presented of the diversity and faunal turnover of Jurassic ammonites related to transgressive /regressive events. The data set contained 400 genera and 1548 species belonging to 67 ammonite zones covering the entire Jurassic System. These data were used in the construction of faunal turnover curves and ammonite diversities, that correlate with sea-level fluctuation curves. Twenty-four events of ammonite faunal turnover are analyzed throughout the Jurassic. The most important took place at the Sinemurian-Carixian boundary, latest Carixian-Middle Domerian, Domerian-Toarcian boundary, latest Middle Toarcian-Late Toarcian, Toarcian-Aalenian boundary, latest Aalenian-earliest Bajocian, latest Early Bajocian-earliest Late Bojocian, Early Bathonian-Middle Bathonian boundary, latest Middle Bathonian-earliest Late Bathonian, latest Bathonian-Early Callovian, earliest Early Oxfordian-Middle Oxfordian, earliest Late Oxfordian-latest Oxfordian, latest Early Kimmeridgian, Late Kimmeridgian, middle Early Tithonian and Early Tithonian-Late Tithonian boundary. More than 75 percent of these turnovers correlate with regressive-transgressive cycles in the Exxon, and /or Hallam's sea-level curves. Inmost cases the extinction events coincide with regressive intervals, whereas origination and radiation events are related to transgressive cycles. The turnovers frequently coincide with major or minor discontinuities in the Subbetic basin (Betic Cordillera).

Energetic and metabolic cost of growth in Gambian infants.

The aim of the study was to measure the energy used for growth of healthy fullterm and breast-fed Gambian infants. The weight gain (WG) of 14 infants (mean age +/- SEM 17 +/- 1 d, weight 3.581 +/- 0.105 kg) was measured over a 2-week period; the energy intake (EI) from breast milk was assessed for 24 h in the middle of the study period by weighing the infant before and after each breast-feed. On the same day, sleeping energy expenditure (SEE) and respiratory quotient (RQ) were measured for 30 min on five occasions through the 24-h period. EI averaged 502 +/- 25 kJ/kg.d, and SEE 230 +/- 6 kJ/kg.d; thus, an average of 272 kJ/kg.d were available for physical activity and the energy stored for growth. The total energy spent by infants while sleeping and for periods of physical activity was calculated to be 1.7 x SEE. The mean RQ measured on five occasions averaged 0.879 +/- 0.009. SEE was correlated with WG (r = 0.747, P less than 0.005), with a slope of the regression line of 5.5 kJ/g; this value can be considered as an estimate of the energy spent for new tissue synthesis in the resting infant. The efficiency of weight gain was lower in this study (67%) than in studies conducted on fast-growing preterm infants or children recovering from malnutrition.

Macrozoobentos de dos Áreas de la plataforma continental del Norte Peruano en el verano de 1987

Se estudiaron muestras de Macrozoobentos (> 1 mm) tomadas a diferentes profundidades en enero de 1987 por el BIC Humboldt de la plataforma continental de dos áreas del norte del litoral peruano, una frente a zorritos (3º35.5`- 3º51.3`) y otra entre Isla Lobos de Tierra y Pimentel (6º32.0`- 6º55.5`), de distinto tipo de sedimento en el fondo. Las muestras estudiadas, así como los datos de Temperatura, Oxigeno disuelto y Salinidad en el fondo, fueron proporcionadas por el Programa Cooperativo Peruano-Alemán de Investigación Pesquera (PROCOPA) y el Instituto del Mar del Perú (IMARPE). El trabajo consiste en identificar, cuantificar y comparar las taxa presentes en las muestras de ambas áreas, determinar la Biomasa, Densidad, Diversidad, Equidad y Riqueza, y analizar el tipo y característica del sedimento de las estaciones. Para el estudio del aspecto comunitario se emplearon el análisis de agrupamiento por racimos (“cluster análisis”; Legendre y Legendre, 1983) y la técnica de los Índices Biológicos (Guille, 1970). En el análisis estadístico se usaron preferentemente la prueba no paramétrica de dos grupos de Kolmogorov-Smirnov y correlaciones lineales entre los factores abiòticos, características del sedimento y parámetros biológicos hallados.

Especies acompañantes de la merluza peruana en verano 2004. Crucero BIC Olaya 0401-02

El crucero de evaluación de recursos demersales BIC Olaya 0401-02 se efectuó del 14 de enero al 7 de febrero del 2004, entre Puerto Pizarro (3°29’S) y Punta Pacasmayo (7°23’S). Las capturas totales llegaron a 42.016 kg. Las especies identificadas fueron Merluccius gayi peruanus (merluza) con 31.429,4 kg (74,8%), Ctenosciaena peruviana (bereche con barbo) con 2.815,7 kg (6,7%), Dosidicus gigas (pota) con 1.777,3 kg (4,2%), Hippoglossina macrops (lenguado ojón) con 611,8 kg (1,5%), Peprilus medius (chiri) con 543,7 kg (1,3%), Pontinus sierra (diablico) con 243,5 kg (0,6%), Paralabrax humeralis (cabrilla) con 261,4 kg (0,6%), Physiculus talarae (carbonero) con 78,2 kg (0,2%), Prionotus stephanophrys (falso volador) con 51,1 kg (0,1%) y Cynoscion analis (cachema) con 11,3 kg (0,03%). En la mayoría de especies se observó un gradiente de estratificación latitudinal por tallas, es decir una relación de tipo inversa entre las tallas y la latitud. La distribución vertical de las principales especies, fue desde aguas someras de 12 bz hasta 283 bz de profundidad. El rango de temperatura fue 8,2 a 17,6 °C; del oxígeno disuelto 0,48 y 2,83 mL/L; y de la salinidad, 34,64 y 35,07 ups. El análisis macroscópico de las gónadas mostró que la mayoría de los recursos se encontraron en proceso de maduración gonadal.
