This work assesses the photocatalytic (TiO(2)/UV) degradation of a simulated reactive dye bath (Black 5, Red 239, Yellow 17, and auxiliary chemicals). Color removal was monitored by spectrophotometry. Mineralization was determined by DOC analyses. Photocatalytic, photolytic, and adsorption experiments were performed, showing that adsorption was negligible. After 30 min of irradiation, it was achieved 97% and 40% of color removal with photocatalysis and photolysis, respectively. No mineralization occurred within 30 min. A kinetic model composed of two, first-order in-series reactions was used. The first photocatalytic decolorization rate constant was k(1) = 2.6 min(-1) and the second k(2) = 0.011 min(-1). The fast decolorization of Reactive Black 5 dye is an indication that the number of azo and vinylsulfone groups in the dye molecule maybe a determining factor for the increased photolytic and photocatalytic color removal and degradation rates. Fatores genéticos e ambientais são apontados como fatores causais para explicar as diferenças no desenvolvimento de problemas de saúde entre grupos étnicos. O conceito de raça/etnia é definido, assim como as indicações de seu uso. Diabetes melito (DM) como um estado de doença com uma marcada variabilidade étnico-racial é utilizado como exemplo de análise. Através de estudo transversal avaliou-se a prevalência das complicações vasculares em uma amostra de pacientes com DM tipo 2. Um total de 864 pacientes, incluindo 656 brancos, 104 mulatos e 104 pretos, classificados por auto-definição, foram avaliados através de protocolo padrão para doença arterial coronariana (DAC), doença vascular periférica (DVP), acidente vascular cerebral (AVC), retinopatia diabética (RD), nefropatia diabética (ND) e neuropatia diabética sensório-motora distal (NSMD). Pacientes brancos e mulatos eram mais velhos que os pacientes pretos (61,0 ± 9,3 vs. 60,1 ± 10,3 vs. 56,0 ± 10,3 anos; P <0,001), embora o tempo de duração do DM fosse semelhante entre os grupos (14,8 ± 8,2 vs. 14,2 ± 6,7 vs. 13,3 ± 7,0 anos; P = 0,169). Parâmetros antropométricos (índice de massa corporal e medida da cintura), prevalência de síndrome metabólica, hipertensão arterial sistêmica, níveis de hemoglobina glicada, também foram similares entre os grupos. Em relação às complicações crônicas do DM, brancos, mulatos e pretos apresentaram-se com uma prevalência similar de DVP, AVC e NSMD. Mulatos e pretos, quando comparados com brancos, apresentaram uma maior prevalência de DAC (45,4% vs. 60,4% vs. 39,2% ; P=0,004). As prevalências de microalbuminúria (22,4%, 21,2 e 22,1%; P= 0,906) e macroalbuminuria (16,2%, 19,2% and 13,5%; P= 0,915) foram similares entre os grupos. Doença renal avançada (diálise) (9% vs. 8,7% vs. 18,3%; P=0,012) e RDP (21,5% vs. 15,4% vs. 34,6%; P=0,005) foram mais freqüentes em pretos. Estas diferenças se mantiveram após ajustes para possíveis fatores de confusão. Concluindo, em pacientes com DM tipo 2 com o mesmo tipo de assistência médica, controle pressórico e metabólico, foi observada uma prevalência maior de DAC, RDP e doença renal avançada em pacientes pretos. Os mecanismos pelos quais estas diferenças ocorrem não são claros e componentes genéticos e/ou ambientais devem ser melhor explorados. Entretanto, até que este melhor entendimento seja disponível, uma abordagem mais agressiva na avaliação e manejo dos fatores de risco para as complicações do DM nos indivíduos pretos deve ser pensada.

Water and NaCl intake is strongly inhibited by the activation of alpha(2)-adrenergic receptors with clonidine or moxonidine (alpha(2)-adrenergic/imidazoline agonists) injected peripherally or into the forebrain and by serotonin and cholecystokinin in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN). Considering that alpha(2)-adrenergic receptors exist in the LPBN and the similar origin of serotonergic and adrenergic afferent pathways to the LPBN, in this study we investigated the effects of bilateral injections of moxonidine alone or combined with RX 821002 (alpha(2)- adrenergic antagonist) into the LPBN on 1.8% NaCl and water intake induced by the treatment with s.c. furosemide (10 mg/kg)+captopril (5 mg/kg). Additionally, we investigated if moxonidine into the LPBN would modify furosemide+captopril-induced c-fos expression in the forebrain. Male Holtzman rats with cannulas implanted bilaterally in the LPBN were used. Contrary to forebrain injections, bilateral LPBN injections of moxonidine (0.1, 0.5 and 1 nmol/0.2 mul) strongly increased furosemide+captopril-induced 1.8% NaCl intake (16.6 +/- 2.7, 44.5 +/- 3.2 and 44.5 +/- 4.3 ml/2 h, respectively, vs. vehicle: 6.9 +/- 1.5 ml/2 h). Only the high dose of moxonidine increased water intake (23.3 +/- 3.8 ml/2 h, vs. vehicle: 12.1 +/- 2.6 ml/2 h). Prior injections of RX 821002 (10 and 20 nmol/0.2 mu1) abolished the effect of moxonidine (0.5 nmol) on 1.8% NaCl intake. Moxonidine into the LPBN did not modify furosemide+captopril-induced c-fos expression in forebrain areas related to the control of fluid-electrolyte balance. The results show that the activation of LPBN a2-adrenergic receptors enhances furosemide+captopril-induced 1.8% NaCl and water intake. This enhancement was not related to prior alteration in the activity of forebrain areas as suggested by c-fos expression. Previous and present results indicate opposite roles for alpha(2-)adrenergic receptors in the control of sodium and water intake according to their distribution in the rat brain. (C) 2004 IBRO. BnSP-7 and BnSP-6, two Lys49-phospholipase A(2) isolated from Bothrops neuwiedi pauloensis snake venom, were co-crystallized with a-tocopherol and X-ray diffraction data were collected for both complexes (2.2 and 2.6 angstrom). A new alternative quaternary conformation for these two complexes compared with all other dimeric Lys49-PLA(2) has been observed.

Crotoxin, a potent neurotoxin from the venom of the South American rattlesnake Crotalus durissus terrificus, exists as a heterodimer formed between a phospholipase A(2) and a catalytically inactive acidic phospholipase A(2) analogue (crotapotin). Large single crystals of the crotoxin complex and of the isolated subunits have been obtained. The crotoxin complex crystal belongs to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2, with unit-cell parameters a = 38.2, b = 68.7, c = 84.2 angstrom, and diffracted to 1.75 angstrom resolution. The crystal of the phospholipase A(2) domain belongs to the hexagonal space group P6(1)22 (or its enantiomorph P6(5)22), with unit-cell parameters a = b = 38.7, c = 286.7 angstrom, and diffracted to 2.6 angstrom resolution. The crotapotin crystal diffracted to 2.3 angstrom resolution; however, the highly diffuse diffraction pattern did not permit unambiguous assignment of the unit-cell parameters.

Reaction of LaX3(THF)(n) (X = Cl, 1) with two equiv. of K(Tp(Me2)) gave good yields of the bis-Tp complexes [La(Tp(Me2))(2)X] (X = Cl (1); I (3)). However, the formation of 1 and 3 is always accompanied by significant amounts of La(Tp(Me2))(2)(kappa(2)-pz(Me2)) ([pz(Me2)](-) = 3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolato) (2). The pyrazolato complex 2, which presumably arises from decomposition of the [Tp(Me2)](-) moiety during salt metathesis, was independently prepared in good yield from 1 and in situ generated [pz(Me2)](-). The solid-state structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Subsequent reactions of halogeno-Tp(Me2) complexes 1 and 3 with various alkali metal salts MR (M = Li, R = CH2SiMe3, Ph, N(SiMe3)(2); M = K, R = OAr) gave M(Tp(Me2)) as the major product. Alternatively, the mono-Tp bis(aryloxide) derivatives [Ln(Tp(Me2))(OC6H2-2,6-'Bu-4-Me)(2)] (Ln = La (4); Nd (5)) were obtained in high yields by salt metathesis of [Ln(OC6H2-2,6-'Bu-4-Me)(3)] with one equiv. of K(Tp(Me2)). Bismuth was evaluated as an internal standard for the direct determination of Pb in vinegar by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using Ru as a permanent modifier with co-injection of Pd/Mg(NO3)(2). The correlation coefficient of the graph plotted from the non-nalized absorbance signals of Bi versus Pb was r=0.989. Matrix effects were evaluated by analyzing the slope ratios between the analytical curve, and analytical curves obtained from Pb additions in red and white wine vinegar obtained from reference solutions prepared in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, samples. The calculated ratios were around 1.04 and 1.02 for analytical curves established applying an internal standard and 1.3 and 1.5 for analvtical curves without. Analytical curves in the 2.5-15 pg L-1 Pb concentration interval were established using the ratio Pb absorbance to Bi absorbance versus analvte concentration, and typical linear correlations of r=0.999 were obtained. The proposed method was applied for direct determination of Pb in 18 commercial vinegar samples and the Pb concentration varied from 2.6 to 31 pg L-1. Results were in agreement at a 95% confidence level (paired t-test) with those obtained for digested samples. Recoveries of Pb added to vinegars varied from 96 to 108% with and from 72 to 86% without an internal standard. Two water standard reference materials diluted in vinegar sample were also analyzed and results were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. The characteristic mass was 40 pg Pb and the useful lifetime of the tube was around 1600 firings. The limit of detection was 0.3 mu g L-1 and the relative standard deviation was <= 3.8% and <= 8.3% (n = 12) for a sample containing, 10 mu L-1 Pb with and without internal standard, respectively. Oxidation of [Ni(cyclam)](2+), cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, accelerated by sulfur dioxide, was studied spectrophotometrically by following the formation of [Ni(cyclam)](3+) under the conditions: [Ni(cyclam)](2+) = 6.0 x 10(-3) M; initial [Ni(cyclam)](3+) = 8.0 x 10(-6) M; [cyclam] = 6.0 x 10(-3) M; [SO2] = (1.0-5.0) x 10(-4) M and 1.0 M perchloric acid in oxygen saturated solutions at 25.0 degrees C and ionic strength = 1.0 M. The oxidation reaction exhibits autocatalytic behavior in which the induction period depends on the initial Ni(III) concentration. A kinetic study of the reduction of Ni(III) by SO2 under anaerobic conditions, and the oxidation of Ni(II), showed that the rate-determining step involves reduction of Ni(III) by SO2 to produce the SO3.- radical, which rapidly reacts with dissolved oxygen to produce SO5.- and rapidly oxidizes Ni(II). The results clearly show a redox cycling process which depends on the balance of SO2 and oxygen concentrations in solution.

The stable free radical 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl-4-amino-4-carboxylic acid (TOAC) is the only spin labeled amino acid that has been used to date to successfully label peptide sequences for structural studies. However, severe difficulty in coupling the subsequent amino acid has been the most serious shortcoming of this paramagnetic marker. This problem stems from the low nucleophilicity of TOAC's amine group towards the acylation reaction during peptide chain elongation. The present report introduces the alternative beta -amino acid 2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidine-N-oxyl-3-amino-4-carboxylic acid (POAC), potentially useful in peptide and protein chemistry. Investigations aimed at addressing the stereochemistry of this cyclic molecule through X-ray diffraction measurements of crystalline and bulk samples revealed that it consists only of the trans conformer. The 9-fluorenylmethyloxyearbonyl group (Fmoc) was chosen for temporary protection of the POAC amine function, allowing insertion of the probe at any position in a peptide sequence. The vasoactive octapeptide angiotensin II (AII, DRVYIHPF) was synthesized by replacing Pro(7) with POAC. The reaction of Fmoc-POAC with the peptidyl-resin occurred smoothly, and the coupling of the subsequent amino acid showed a much faster reaction when compared with TOAC. POAC(7)-AII was obtained in good yield, demonstrating that, in addition to TOAC, POAC is a convenient amino acid for the synthesis of spin labeled peptide analogues. The present findings open the possibility of a wide range of chemical and biological applications for this novel beta -amino acid derivative, including structural investigations involving its differentiated bend-inducing characteristics.

We report measurements of the nonlinear (NL) refractive index n(2) of lead-germanium films (LGFs) containing Cu and Cu(2)O nanoparticles (NPs). The thermally managed eclipse Z-scan technique with 150 fs pulses from a laser operating at 800 nm was used. The NL refractive index measured, n(2)=6.3x10(-12) cm(2)/W has electronic origin and the NL absorption coefficient alpha(2) is smaller than 660 cm/GW. The figure of merit n(2)/lambda alpha(2) is enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude in comparison with the result for the LGFs without the copper based NPs. Anti-inflammatory drugs are known to be the most widely-marketed drugs in the world, despite their serious side effects, mainly on the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, there are constant efforts to discover new prototypes with improved therapeutic activity and safety for the patient. Since the advent of the computational chemistry, the theoretical study of the physiological behavior of a new compound and hence an understanding of its supposed mechanism of action have been made a lot more accessible. Thus, molecule-receptor mathematical modeling was applied to compound I (1-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)indolin-2-one), to predict theoretically its ability to inhibit, selectively, the COX-2 isoform of prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase (PGHS-2), and the best positions to introduce chemical groups and to make molecular modifications.

First measurements of dihadron correlations for charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (Δν) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (Δø). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side (Δø y≈ π) azimuthal correlation is observed at all Δν, as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in Δν are observed for particles with similar ø values. This phenomenon, also known as the \ridge, persists up to at least jΔνj = 4. For particles with transverse momenta (pT) of 2-4 GeV/c, the ridge is found to be most prominent when these particles are correlated with particles of pT = 2-6 GeV/c, and to be much reduced when paired with particles of pT = 10-12 GeV/c.
