This study aimed to investigate the effect of 830 nm low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on skeletal muscle fatigue. Ten healthy male professional volleyball players entered a crossover randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trial. Active LLLT (830 nm wavelength, 100 mW output, spot size 0.0028 cm(2), 200 s total irradiation time) or an identical placebo LLLT was delivered to four points on the biceps humeri muscle immediately before exercises. All subjects performed voluntary biceps humeri contractions with a load of 75% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force until exhaustion. After active LLLT the mean number of repetitions was significantly higher than after placebo irradiation [mean difference 4.5, standard deviation (SD) +/- 6.0, P = 0.042], the blood lactate levels increased after exercises, but there was no significant difference between the treatments. We concluded that 830 nm LLLT can delay the onset of skeletal muscle fatigue in high-intensity exercises, in spite of increased blood lactate levels.
Synthesis, characterization and catalytic evaluation of cubic ordered mesoporous iron-silicon oxides

Iron was successfully incorporated in FDU-1 type cubic ordered mesoporous silica by a simple direct synthesis route. The (Fe/FDU-1) samples were characterized by Rutherford back-scattering spectrometry (RBS), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). N(2) sorption isotherm, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The resulting material presented an iron content of about 5%. Prepared at the usual acid pH of -0.3, the composite was mostly formed by amorphous silica and hematite with a quantity of Fe(2+) present in the structure. The samples prepared with adjusted pH values (2 and 3.5) were amorphous. The samples` average pore diameter was around 12.0 nm and BET specific surface area was of 680 m(2) g(-1). Although the iron-incorporated material presented larger lattice parameter, about 25 nm compared to pure FDU-1, the Fe/FDU-1 composite still maintained its cubic ordered fcc mesoporous structure before and after the template removal at 540 degrees C. The catalytic performance of Fe/FDU-1 was investigated in the catalytic oxidation of Black Remazol B dye using a catalytic ozonation process. The results indicated that Fe/FDU-1 prepared at the usual acid pH exhibited high catalytic activity in the mineralization of this pollutant when compared to the pure FDU-1. Fe(2)O(3) and Fe/FDU-1 prepared with higher pH of 2 and 3.5. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Using the QCD sum rules we test if the charmonium-like structure Y(4274), observed in the J/psi phi invariant mass spectrum, can be described with a D(s)(D) over bar (s0)(2317)+ h.c. molecular current with J(PC) = 0(-+). We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension ten and we work at leading order in alpha(s). We keep terms which are linear in the strange quark mass m(s). The mass obtained for such state is mD(s)D(s0) = (4.78 +/- 0.54) GeV. We also consider a molecular 0(-+) D (D) over bar (0)(2400)+ h.c. current and we obtain m(DD0) = (4.55 +/- 0.49) GeV. Our study shows that the newly observed Y(4274) in the J/psi phi invariant mass spectrum can be, considering the uncertainties, described using a molecular charmonium current. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Amphotericin B (AmB) is widely used in the treatment of systemic fungal infections, despite its toxic effects. Nephrotoxicity, ascribed as the most serious toxic effect, has been related to the state of aggregation of the antibiotic. In search of the increase in AmB antifungal activity associated with low toxicity, several AmB-amphiphile formulations have been proposed. This work focuses on the structural characterization of a specific AmB formulation: AmB associated with sonicated dioctadecyl dimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) aggregates. Here, it was confirmed that sonicated DODAB dispersion is constituted by DODAB bicelles, and that monomeric AmB is much more soluble in bicelles than in DODAB vesicles. A new optical parameter is proposed for the estimation of the relative amount of amphiphile-bound monomeric AmB. With theoretical simulations of the spectra of spin labels incorporated in DODAB bicelles it was possible to prove that monomeric AmB binds preferentially to lipids located at the edges of DODAB bicelles, rigidifying them, and decreasing the polarity of the region. That special binding of monomeric AmB along the borders of bicelles, where the lipids are highly disorganized, could be used in the formulation of other carriers for the antibiotic, including mixtures of natural lipids which are known to form bicelles. The (16)O+(27)Al elastic and inelastic angular distributions have been measured in a broad angular range (13 degrees < theta(lab) < 52 degrees) at about 100 MeV incident energy. The use of the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer and of the ray-reconstruction analysis technique has been crucial in order to provide, in the same experiment, high-resolution energy spectra and cross-section measurements distributed over more than seven orders of magnitude down to hundreds of nb/sr. In this work, KHSO(4):Mn crystals doped with Mn and K(2)SO(4) were synthesized using an aqueous solution method. The samples were exposed to ionizing radiation in order to observe the effects on their physical properties. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify the structure of the crystals by detecting the vibrational frequencies of the crystalline lattice. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to study the creation of paramagnetic centers arising from exposure to ionizing radiation. This new synthesis method produces high quality K(2)SO(4) and KHSO(4):Mn crystals and allows control of structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Complex fac-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (1) was synthesized from the reaction of [RuCl(3)(H(2)O)(2)(NO)] and the P-N ligand, o-[(N,N-dimethylamino)phenyl]diphenylphosphine) in refluxing methanol solution, while complex mer,trans-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (2) was obtained by photochemical isomerization of (1) in dichloromethane solution. The third possible isomer mer, cis-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (3) was never observed in direct synthesis as well as in photo-or thermal-isomerization reactions. When refluxing a methanol solution of complex (2) a thermally induced isomerization occurs and complex (1) is regenerated. The complexes were characterized by NMR ((31)P{(1)H}, (15)N{1H} and 1H), cyclic voltammetry, FTIR, UV-Vis, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction structure determination. The (31)P{(1)H} NMR revealed the presence of singlet at 35.6 for (1) and 28.3 ppm for (2). The (1)H NMR spectrum for (1) presented two singlets for the methyl hydrogens at 3.81 and 3.13 ppm, while for (2) was observed only one singlet at 3.29 ppm. FTIR Ru-NO stretching in KBr pellets or CH(2)Cl(2) solution presented 1866 and 1872 cm(-1) for (1) and 1841 and 1860 cm(-1) for (2). Electrochemical analysis revealed a irreversible reduction attributed to Ru(II)-NO(+) -> Ru(II)-NO(0) at -0.81 V and -0.62 V, for (1) and (2), respectively; the process Ru(II) -> Ru(III), as expected, is only observed around 2.0 V, for both complexes. Studies were conducted using (15)NO and both complexes were isolated with (15)N-enriched NO. Upon irradiation, the complex fac-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (1) does not exchange (14)NO by (15)NO, while complex mer, trans-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (2) does. Complex mer, trans-[RuCl(3)((15)NO)(P-N)] (2`) was obtained by direct reaction of mer, trans-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (2) with (15)NO and the complex fac-[RuCl(3)((15)NO)(P-N)] (1`) was obtained by thermal-isomerization of mer, trans-[RuCl(3)((15)NO)(P-N)] (2`). DFT calculation on isomer energies, electronic spectra and electronic configuration were done. For complex (1) the HOMO orbital is essentially Ru (46.6%) and Cl (42.5%), for (2) Ru (57.4%) and Cl (39.0%) while LUMO orbital for (1) is based on NO (52.9%) and is less extent on Ru (38.4%), for (2) NO (58.2%) and Ru (31.5%). The structural, spectroscopic and theoretical study of cyclocreatine (1-carboxymethyl-2-iminoimidazolidine, CyCre) has been performed prompted by the biological relevance of the molecule and its potential role as a ligand in biometalic compounds. The crystal structure of CyCre has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The compound crystallizes as a zwitterion in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c. The crystal is further stabilized by a network of N-H center dot center dot center dot O bonds. Infrared and Raman spectra of the solid, electronic spectra of aqueous solutions at different pH values and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra have been recorded and analyzed. Band assignments were accomplished with the help of theoretical calculations. Optimized molecular geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies and molecular electrostatic potentials were calculated using methods based on the density functional theory. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A square matrix is nonderogatory if its Jordan blocks have distinct eigenvalues. We give canonical forms for (1) nonderogatory complex matrices up to unitary similarity, and (2) pairs of complex matrices up to similarity, in which one matrix has distinct eigenvalues. The types of these canonical forms are given by undirected and, respectively, directed graphs with no undirected cycles. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The electrical properties of conducting polymers make them useful materials in a wide number of technological applications. In the last decade, an important effect on the properties of the conducting polymer when iron oxides particles are incorporated into the conductive matrix was shown. In the present study, films of polypyrrole were synthesized in the presence of magnetite particles. The effect of the magnetite particles on the structure of the polymer matrix was determined using Raman spectroscopy. Mass variations at different concentrations of Fe(3)O(4) incorporated into the conducting matrix were also measured by means of quartz crystal microbalance. Additionally, the changes in the resistance of the films were evaluated over time by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in solid state. These results show that the magnetite incorporation decreases polymeric film resistance and Raman experiments have evidenced that the incorporation of magnetite into polymeric matrix not only stabilizes the polaronic form of the polypyrrole, but also preserves the polymer from further oxidation. Resonance Raman, FTIR, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis-NIR, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray absorption at Si K-edge and electron microscopy were employed for characterizing the products formed through electrochemical oxidation of intercalated anilinium ions inside the cationic montmorillonite (MMT) clay. The layer silicate structure was not affected by the anilinium oxidation between the layers. The intercalated products present only an electronic absorption band at 400 nm, very low conductivity (ca. 10(-7) S cm(-1)) and their Raman spectrum displays bands, with high relative intensities, assigned to the benzidine dication, indicating that this product was formed in high amount. Nevertheless, bands that can be correlated to phenazine-like segments and 1,4-phenylenediamine repeat units (PANI like segments) are also observed. The very low EPR signal indicates that diamagnetic species are predominant. All results are compared to those obtained by anilinium-MMT chemically oxidized by persulfate and the differences are pointed out. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Capillary electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection was successfully used to quantify N-acetylglucosamine and five N-acetyl-chitooligosaccharides (C2-C6) produced after reaction with a purified chitinase (TmChi) from Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera). No derivatization process was necessary. The separation was developed using 10 mM NaOH with 10% (v/v) acetonitrile as background electrolyte and homemade equipment with a system that avoids the harmful effect of electrolysis. The limit of detection for all oligosaccharides was ca. 3 mu M, and the results indicated that the larger the oligosaccharide, the higher the sensitivity. Analysis of the chitooligosaccharides produced revealed that TmChi has an endolytic cleavage pattern with C5 as the best substrate (higher catalytic efficiency k(cat)/K-M) releasing C2 and C3. A new polymeric coating consisting of a dual-phase, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polypyrrole (PPY) was developed for the stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) of antidepressants (mirtazapine, citalopram, paroxetine, duloxetine, fluoxetine and sertraline) from plasma samples, followed by liquid chromatography analysis (SBSE/LC-UV). The extractions were based on both adsorption (PPY) and sorption (PDMS) mechanisms. SBSE variables, such as extraction time, temperature, pH of the matrix, and desorption time were optimized, in order to achieve suitable analytical sensitivity in a short time period. The PDMS/PPY coated stir bar showed high extraction efficiency (sensitivity and selectivity) toward the target analytes. The quantification limits (LOQ) of the SBSE/LC-UV method ranged from 20 ng mL(-1) to 50 ng mL(-1), and the linear range was from LOQ to 500 ng mL(-1), with a determination coefficient higher than 0.99. The inter-day precision of the SBSE/LC-UV method presented a variation coefficient lower than 15%. The efficiency of the SBSE/LC-UV method was proved by analysis of plasma samples from elderly depressed patients. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
