The vibration response of piled foundations due to ground-borne vibration produced by an underground railway is a largely-neglected area in the field of structural dynamics. However, this continues to be an important aspect of research as it is expected that the presence of piled foundations can have a significant influence on the propagation and transmission of the wavefield produced by the underground railway. This paper presents a comparison of two methods that can be employed in calculating the vibration response of a piled foundation: an efficient semi-analytical model, and a Boundary Element model. The semi-analytical model uses a column or an Euler beam to model the pile, and the soil is modelled as a linear, elastic continuum that has the geometry of a thick-walled cylinder with an infinite outer radius and an inner radius equal to the radius of the pile. The boundary element model uses a constant-element BEM formulation for the halfspace, and a rectangular discretisation of the circular pile-soil interface. The piles are modelled as Timoshenko beams. Pile-soil-pile interactions are inherently accounted for in the BEM equations, whereas in the semi-analytical model these are quantified using the superposition of interaction factors. Both models use the method of joining subsystems to incorporate the incident wavefield generated by the underground railway into the pile model. Results are computed for a single pile subject to an inertial loading, pile-soil-pile interactions, and a pile group subjected to excitation from an underground railway. The two models are compared in terms of accuracy, computation time, versatility and applicability, and guidelines for future vibration prediction models involving piled foundations are proposed.

It is well documented that the presence of even a few air bubbles in water can signifi- cantly alter the propagation and scattering of sound. Air bubbles are both naturally and artificially generated in all marine environments, especially near the sea surface. The abil- ity to measure the acoustic propagation parameters of bubbly liquids in situ has long been a goal of the underwater acoustics community. One promising solution is a submersible, thick-walled, liquid-filled impedance tube. Recent water-filled impedance tube work was successful at characterizing low void fraction bubbly liquids in the laboratory [1]. This work details the modifications made to the existing impedance tube design to allow for submersed deployment in a controlled environment, such as a large tank or a test pond. As well as being submersible, the useable frequency range of the device is increased from 5 - 9 kHz to 1 - 16 kHz and it does not require any form of calibration. The opening of the new impedance tube is fitted with a large stainless steel flange to better define the boundary condition on the plane of the tube opening. The new device was validated against the classic theoretical result for the complex reflection coefficient of a tube opening fitted with an infinite flange. The complex reflection coefficient was then measured with a bubbly liquid (order 250 micron radius and 0.1 - 0.5 % void fraction) outside the tube opening. Results from the bubbly liquid experiments were inconsistent with flanged tube theory using current bubbly liquid models. The results were more closely matched to unflanged tube theory, suggesting that the high attenuation and phase speeds in the bubbly liquid made the tube opening appear as if it were radiating into free space.

To enhance the uniformity of fluid flow distribution in microreactors, a header configuration consisting of a cone diffuser connected to a thick-walled screen has been proposed. The thick-walled screen consists of two sections: the upstream section constitutes a set of elongated parallel upstream channels and the downstream section constitutes a set of elongated parallel downstream channels positioned at an angle of 90 with respect to the upstream channels. In this approach the problem of flow, equalization reduces to that of flow equalization in the first and second downstream channels of the thick-walled screen. In turn, this requires flow equalization in the corresponding cross sections of the upstream channels. The computational fluid dynamics analysis of the fluid flow maldistribution shows that eight parallel upstream channels with a width of 300-600 pm are required per 1 cm of length for flow equalization. The length to width ratio of these channels has to be > 15. The numerical results suggest that the proposed header-configuration can effectively improve the performance of the downstream microstructured devices, decreasing the ratio of the maximum flow velocity to the mean flow velocity from 2 to 1.005 for a wide range of Reynolds numbers (0.5-10). 2006 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AlChE J, 53: 28-38, 2007.

The use of a charged-particle microbeam provides a unique opportunity to control precisely, the number of particles traversing individual cells and the localization of dose within the cell. The accuracy of 'aiming' and of delivering a precise number of particles crucially depends on the design and implementation of the collimation and detection system. This report describes the methods available for collimating and detecting energetic particles in the context of a radiobiological microbeam. The arrangement developed at the Gray Laboratory uses either a 'V'-groove or a thick-walled glass capillary to achieve 2-5 mu m spatial resolution. The particle detection system uses an 18 mu m thick transmission scintillator and photomultiplier tube to detect particles with >99% efficiency.

Cobalt nanotubes (CoNTs) with very high longitudinal coercivity were prepared by electrodeposition of cobalt acetate for the first time by using anodized alumina (AAO) template. They were then characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Formation of a highly ordered hexagonal cobalt phase is observed. Room temperature SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) magnetometer measurements indicate that the easy axis of magnetization is parallel to the nanotube axis. These CoNTs exhibit very high longitudinal coercivity of ∼820 Oe. A very high intertubular interaction resulting from magnetostatic dipolar interaction between nanotubes is observed. Thick-walled nanotubes were also fabricated by using cobalt acetate tetrahydrate precursors. A plausible mechanism for the formation of CoNTs based on mobility assisted growth is proposed. The role of the hydration layer and the mobility of metal ions are elucidated in the case of the growth mechanism of one-dimensional geometry

Alcantarea (Bromeliaceae) has 26 species that are endemic to eastern Brazil, occurring mainly on gneiss-granitic rock outcrops (`inselbergs`). Alcantarea has great ornamental potential and several species are cultivated in gardens. Limited data is available in the literature regarding the leaf anatomical features of the genus, though it has been shown that it may provide valuable information for characterizing of Bromeliaceae taxa. In the present work, we employed leaf anatomy to better characterize the genus and understand its radiation into harsh environments, such as inselbergs. We also searched for characteristics potentially useful in phylogenetic analyses and in delimiting Alcantarea and Vriesea. The anatomical features of the leaves, observed for various Alcantarea species, are in accordance with the general pattern shown by other Bromeliaceae members. However, some features are notable for their importance for sustaining life on rock outcrops, such as: small epidermal thick-walled cells, uneven sinuous epidermal walls, hypodermis often differentiated into lignified layers with thick-walled cells, aquiferous hypodermis bearing collapsible cells, and the presence of well developed epicuticular stratum. Alcantarea leaves tend to show different shapes in the spongy parenchyma, and have chlorenchymatous palisade parenchyma arranged in more well-defined arches, when compared to Vriesea species from the same habitat.

The Hoplias malabaricus primary spermatogonium shows a large nucleus, central nucleolus, and low electron-dense cytoplasm containing nuages. In cysts, they undergo several mitotic divisions with incomplete cytokinesis, giving rise to secondary spermatogonia. These are smaller than the primary spermatogonia and their nuclei have one or two eccentric nucleoli. Spermatocytes I can be identified by the presence of synaptonemal complexes. Spermatocytes II are smaller than spermatocytes 1, displaying roughly compacted chromatin. All these cell types remain interconnected by thick-walled intercellular bridges, which have membranous reinforcements during mitosis and meiosis. These cell types show a well-developed endomembranous system, one of the centrioles anchored to the plasma membrane and small nuages. Their mitochondria are large and circular, with few cristae. In the last generations of spermatogonia, the mitochondria are smaller, elongate and have more cristae. In the spermatocytes, the mitochondria are small and round. Similarities found in relation to germ cells of other teleosts are discussed.

Syngonanthus elegans flowers are distributed in capitula whose involucral bracts open and close in a diurnal rhythm. The anatomy of these bracts was studied to understand how such movements occur and how it influences reproductive ecology of the species. The involucral bracts have a single layered epidermis composed of thick-walled cells on the abaxial surface, which are responsible for the movement. Since they are hygroscopic, these cells swell when they absorb water from the surrounding environment, causing the bracts to bend and the capitula to close. In natural conditions, the capitula open by day, when temperature increases and the relative air humidity decreases, and close at night, when temperature decreases and the relative air humidity increases. The involucral bracts may thus protect the flowers from abiotic factors, exposing them only at the time of the day when temperature is higher and insects are more active, favoring pollination by small insects. The closed capitula do not only protect the flowers, but they also function as a shelter for floral visitors as Brachiacantha australe (Coccinellidae) and Eumolpini sp. (Chrysomelidae). These small Coleoptera pollinate the flowers of S. elegans during the day and remain within the closed capitula during the night, in a possible mutualistic relationship. (C) 2008 Elsevier GmbH. EICHEMBERG, M. T. and V. L. SCATENA (Universidade Estadual Paulista, Departamento de Botanica, Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil). J. Torrey Bot. Soc. 138:34-40. 2011.-Handicrafts from Jalapao (TO), Brazil, and their Relationship to Plant Anatomy. In the state of Tocantins, midwestern Brazil, communities from the region of Jalapao use scapes of "capim dourado" (golden grass - Syngonanthus nitens- Eriocaulaceae) and leaves of "buriti" (Mauritia flexuosa - Arecaceae) to make handicrafts (baskets and ornaments). The predominant biome of this area is cerrado (savanna), with a notable presence of buriti in the "veredas" (swampy forest-like vegetation), and of golden grass, which is one of the most common plants in humid grasslands. These traditional handicrafts represent a significant source of income for local communities. The whole scapes of Syngonanthus nitens are used due to their golden color, which is a reflection of such internal structures as thick walled cells and lignin in the epidermis and cortex. The strips called "seda" (silk) used to sew the scapes in the making of handicrafts come from young leaves of Mauritia, flexuosa. They are constituted by the adaxial epidermis and bundles of subepidermic fibers, both showing thick-walled cells. Since the cells of the bundles of sclerenchymatic fibers from the abaxial surface of buriti leaves present stegmata containing silica bodies, their mechanical properties are less adapted to the production of "silk", justifying the use of the leaf adaxial surface. Anatomical characteristics such as the thickening and composition of the cell walls of both species together with sociocultural factors, allow a better knowledge of the use of plant structures in the making of handicrafts.

Stern anatomy and the development of intraxylary phloem were investigated in six to eight years old Coccinia indica L. (Cucurbitaceae). Secondary growth in the stems was achieved by the normal cambial activity. In the innermost part of the thicker stems, xylem parenchyma and pith cells dedifferentiated into meristematic cells at several points. In some of the wider rays, ray cells dedifferentiate and produce secondary xylem and phloem with different orientations and sometimes a complete bicollateral vascular bundle. The inner cambial segments of the bicollateral vascular bundle (of primary growth) maintained radial arrangement even in the mature stems but in most places the cambia were either inactive or showed very few cell divisions. Concomitant with the obliteration and collapse of inner phloem (of bicollateral vascular bundles), parenchyma cells encircling the phloem became meristematic forming a circular sheath of internal cambia. These internal cambia produce only intraxylary secondary phloem centripetally and do not produce any secondary xylem. In the stem, secondary xylem consisted mainly of axial parenchyma, small strands of thick-walled xylem derivatives, i.e. vessel elements and fibres embedded in parenchymatous ground mass, wide and tall rays along with exceptionally wide vessels characteristic of lianas. In thick stems, the axial parenchyma de-differentiated into meristem, which later re-differentiated into interxylary phloem. Fibre dimorphism and pseudo-vestured pits in the vessels are also reported.

Stem diameter in Gallesia integrifolia (Spreng.) Harms (Phytolaccaceae) increases by forming concentric rings of xylem alternating with phloem, which show frequent anastomoses. After a period of primary growth and the formation of first (normal) ring of vascular cambium, further successive rings are initiated outside this cambium. The second ring of cambium originates from the pericycle parenchyma located between the proto-phloem, and the pericycle fibres. Each cambium produces centripetally secondary xylem and centrifugally secondary phloem. Differentiation of xylem precedes that of phloem and the first elements formed are always xylem fibres. Structurally, the vascular cylinder is composed by successive rings of secondary xylem and phloem. These rings are separated by wide bands of conjunctive parenchyma tissue. Presence of collateral vascular bundles with irregular orientation is observed in the region of anastomoses of two or more bands of conjunctive tissue. These bundles are surrounded by isodiametric, lignified and thick-walled cells. In some of the cambial rings, occurrence of polycentric rays was also noticed; these rays are tall, and characterized by the presence of meristematic regions that differentiated into thick-walled elements of secondary xylem. Origin and development of the successive cambia and the structure of xylem are discussed.
