A novel mimic was synthesized by modifying hyaluronic acid (HA) with tellurium, whose function is similar to that of glutathione peroxidase (GPX). The structure of TeHA was characterized by means of IR and NMR, the target-Te was located at -CH2OH of the N-acetyl-D-glucosamine of HA. The H2O2 reducing activity of TeHA, by glutathione (GSH), was 163.6 U/mu mol according to Wilson's method. In contrast to other mimics, TeHA displayed the highest activity. Moreover, TeHA accepted many hydroperoxides as its substrates, such as H2O2, cumenyl hydroperoxide (CuOOH) and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH), and CuOOH was the optimal substrate of TeHA. A ping-pong mechanism was observed in the steady-state kinetic studies of the reactions catalyzed by TeHA.

In this work, a method was established for the determination of impurities in high purity tellurium by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after Fe(OH)(3) coprecipitation. After comparison of coprecipitation ability and separation efficiency between Fe(OH), and Al(OH)(3), Fe(OH)(3) was chosen as the precipitate. A separation factor of 160 for 200 mg tellurium was obtained under conditions of pH 9 and 2 mg of Fe3(+). The 13 elements, such as Bi, Sn, Pb, In, Tl, Cd, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Ti, Be and Zr, could be almost completely coprecipitated under these conditions. In addition, Te memory effect imposed on the ICP-MS instrument was assessed, as well as Te matrix effect that caused the low recovery of Ga, As, Sb and V in real sample was discussed. Finally, the method was evaluated through recovery test and was applied to practical sample analysis, with detection limits of most of the elements being below 0.15 mug g(-1) and R.S.D. below or at approximately 10%, which indicated that this method could fully satisfy the requirements for analysis of 99.999% similar to 99.9999% high purity Te.

Ionic liquids are shown to be good solvents for elemental sulfur, selenium, phosphorus and tellurium, and can be designed to maximise the solubility of these elements. The presence of the [S-3](center dot-) radical anion in diluted solutions of sulfur in some ionic liquids has been confirmed, and is the origin of their intense blue colour (cf. lapis lazuli).

Heterocyclic chalcogenones were prepd. by reaction of S, Se, or Te with ionic liqs. or salts [I; Ra = (substituted) alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryl; Q = (unsatd.) (substituted) linker to form a ring of 5-10 members; X- = anion selected from conjugate bases of HX having a pKa value of >2.5]. Thus, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate was heated with stoichiometric S at 75° for 48 h to give 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole-2-thione. [on SciFinder(R)]

Tellurite glasses are photonic materials of special interest to the branch of optoelectronic and communication, due to its important optical properties such as high refractive index, broad IR transmittance, low phonon energy etc. Tellurite glasses are solutions to the search of potential candidates for nonlinear optical devices. Low phonon energy makes it an efficient host for dopant ions like rare earths, allowing a better environment for radiative transitions. The dopant ions maintain majority of their individual properties in the glass matrix. Tellurites are less toxic than chalcogenides, more chemically and thermally stable which makes them a highly suitable fiber material for nonlinear applications in the midinfrared and they are of increased research interest in applications like laser, amplifier, sensor etc. Low melting point and glass transition temperature helps tellurite glass preparation easier than other glass families. In order to probe into the versatility of tellurite glasses in optoelectronic industry; we have synthesized and undertaken various optical studies on tellurite glasses. We have proved that the highly nonlinear tellurite glasses are suitable candidates in optical limiting, with comparatively lower optical limiting threshold. Tuning the optical properties of glasses is an important factor in the optoelectronic research. We have found that thermal poling is an efficient mechanism in tuning the optical properties of these materials. Another important nonlinear phenomenon found in zinc tellurite glasses is their ability to switch from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption in the presence of lanthanide ions. Chemical substitution in Co3Sn2-xInxS2 (0 # x # 2) enables tuning of the Fermi level within narrow bands of Co d-states. This results in a compositionally induced double metal–semiconductor–metal transition and manipulation of the thermoelectric power factor. The maximum power factor (14 mW cm-1 K-2) is found for x ¼ 0.85, which corresponds to ZT z 0.2 at 300 K.

The inhibition of human cysteine cathepsins B, L, S and K was evaluated by a set of hypervalent tellurium compounds (telluranes) comprising both organic and inorganic derivatives. All telluranes studied showed a time-and concentration-dependent irreversible inhibition of the cathepsins, and their second-order inactivation rate constants were determined. The organic derivatives were potent inhibitors of the cathepsins and clear specificities were detected, which were parallel to their known substrate specificities. In all cases, the activity of the tellurane-inhibited cathepsins was recovered by treatment of the inactivated enzymes with reducing agents. The maximum stoichiometry of the reaction between cysteine residues and telluranes were also determined. The presented data indicate that it is possible to design organic compounds with a tellurium(IV) moiety as a novel warhead that covalently modifies the catalytic cysteine, and which also form strong interactions with subsites of cathepsins B, L, S and K, resulting in more specific inhibition.

Pinacolyltellurium(IV) dihalides, (t-BuCOCH2)2TeX2 (X ) Br (1b), I (1c)) and Ar(t-BuCOCH2)TeCl2 (Ar == 1-C10H7 (Np) (2a), 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 (Mes) (3a)), are readily prepared at room temperature by the oxidative insertion of elemental tellurium into the Csp3-Br or -I bond of the α-halopinacolone and by the reaction of ArTeCl3 with the pinacolone t-BuCOCH3. The bromides Np(t-BuCOCH2)TeBr2 (2b) and Mes(t-BuCOCH2)TeBr2 (3b) can be prepared by the addition of bromine to the telluride Ar(t-BuCOCH2)-Te or of α-bromopinacolone to ArTeBr. Variable-temperature 1H and 13C NMR of the separate signals for the o-Me groups in 3a,b indicate a very high barrier to rotation about the Te-C(aryl) bond. Crystal diffraction data for 1c, 2a-c, and 3b show that intramolecular 1,4-Te …O(C) secondary bonding interactions (SBIs) are retained even in the presence of bulky aryl groups and intermolecular Te …X SBIs are subject to electronic population and steric congestion around the Te(IV) center in the solid state.

The unsymmetrical1y substituted diorganotellurium dihalides [2-(4,4'-N02C6H4CHNC6H3Me]RTeX2 (R = 4-MeOC6H4, X = Cl,
1a; Br, 1b; I, 1c; R =4-MeC6H4 ; X = Cl, 2; R =C6H5, X = Cl, 3) were prepared in good yields and characterized by solution and solid-state 125Te NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. In the solid-state, molecular structures of 1a and 1c possess scarcely observed 1,4-type intramolecular Te···N secondary interaction. Crystal packing of these compounds show an unusually rich diversity of intermolecular secondary, Te·· ·0, Te· .. \ and 1···1 interactions, Te·· ·π contacts as well as extensive
π-stacking of the organic substituents.
