The caseins (αs1, αs2, β, and κ) are phosphoproteins present in bovine milk that have been studied for over a century and whose structures remain obscure. Here we describe the chemical synthesis and structure elucidation of the N-terminal segment (1–44) of bovine κ-casein, the protein which maintains the micellar structure of the caseins. κ-Casein (1–44) was synthesised by highly optimised Boc solid-phase peptide chemistry and characterised by mass spectrometry. Structure elucidation was carried out by circular dichroism and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. CD analysis demonstrated that the segment was ill defined in aqueous medium but in 30% trifluoroethanol it exhibited considerable helical structure. Further, NMR analysis showed the presence of a helical segment containing 26 residues which extends from Pro8 to Arg34. This is the first report which demonstrates extensive secondary structure within the casein class of proteins.

Nanocrystalline Zn1-xMnxS films (x=0.04, 0.08 and 0.12) were deposited on glass substrates at 400 K using a simple resistive thermal evaporation technique. All the deposited films were characterized by chemical, structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy studies showed that all the films investigated were in nanocrystalline form with the grain size lying in the range 10–20 nm. All the films exhibited cubic structure and the lattice parameters increase linearly with composition. The absorption edge shifted from the higher-wavelength region to lower wavelengths with increase in Mn concentration. The magnetization increased sharply with increase of the Mn content up to x=0.08 and then decreased with further increase of the Mn content. Particularly, Zn0.92Mn0.08S concentration samples show a weak ferromagnetic nature, which might be the optimum concentration for optoelectronic and spintronic device applications.

Tin sulphide films were grown at different substrate temperatures by a thermal co-evaporation technique. The crystallinity of the films was evaluated from X-ray diffraction studies. Single-phase SnS films showed a strong (040) orientation with an orthorhombic crystal structure and a grain size of 0.12 mu m. The films showed an electrical resistivity of 6.1 Omega cm with an activation energy of 0.26 eV. These films exhibited an optical band gap of 1.37 eV and had a high optical absorption coefficient (> 10(4) cm(-1)) above the band-gap energy. The results obtained were analysed to evaluate the potentiality of the co-evaporated SnS films as an absorber layer in solar photovoltaic devices.
Polymerization of pyrrole and processing of the resulting polypyrrole as blends with plasticised PVC
Resumo:
Polypyrrole was synthesized by chemical oxidation of pyrrole in water containing various sulphonic acids like toluene sulphonic acid (TSA), sulphosalicylic acid (SSA), and camphor sulphonic acid (CSA), as well as a combination of each sulphonic acid with sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (NaDBS) to investigate the effect of doping on conductivity, yield, and processability of the conducting polymer. Free-standing blend films of polypyrrole and plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were obtained by casting an homogeneous suspension of the two polymers in tetrahydrofuran. The maximum conductivity of the blend film is similar to 0.3 S/cm, corresponding to a weight fraction of 0.16 w/w polypyrrole. The blend film is semiconducting in the range 300-10 K. A TG-DTA scan indicates the blend film to be amorphous with a stepwise decomposition process similar to pristine PVC. The choice of a dual dopant system during synthesis and the plasticised polymer during subsequent processing were keys to obtaining homogeneous high-quality films. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The combustion of oxidizer zinc nitrate and fuel oxalic acid results in quasi-fibrous zinc oxide. The processing parameters including oxidizer to fuel ratio, time and temperature were optimized for the resultant crystal structure and morphology. Pure hexagonal phase formation does not depend on the fuel ratio, but a stoichiometric ratio of oxidizer to fuel at 450 degrees C and 30 min results in highly crystalline ZnO with 3 mu m length and 0.5 mu m width. This quasi-fiber originates from partial fusion of near spherical, similar to 60 nm particles during the rapid rate of reaction in the combustion process. Transmission electron microscopic analysis confirms the anisotropic primary particle orientation and pore distribution within the developed quasi-fibrous particles. The degradation of methyl orange was assessed by degrading the dye in the presence of the synthesized ZnO (2.95 eV) under both UV and visible light. Quasi-fibrous zinc oxide exhibits effective photocatalytic efficiency under visible light irradiation.

Manganese dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical reduction route at different growth temperatures of 40 degrees C, 80 degrees C, 100 degrees C and were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) analysis. FESEM results show that on increasing growth temperature the morphology changes from clusters into mixture of rods and flakes. XPS analysis reveals the formation of MnO2. Then these particles were immobilized on Pt electrode. A platinum (Pt) electrode modified with low dimensional MnO2 was investigated as a chronoamperometric (CA) sensor for hydrogen peroxide sensing (H2O2). The sample prepared at 100 degrees C shows good electrocatalytic ability for H2O2 sensing when compared with the samples prepared at 40 degrees C and 80 degrees C. At an operating potential of 0.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl catalytic oxidation of the analyte is measured for chronoamperometric (CA) monitoring. The CA signals are linearly proportional to the concentration of H2O2. It is also found that the morphology of the nanostructure plays a vital role in the detection of H2O2. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Wurtzite stalactite-like quasi-one-dimensional ZnS nanoarrays with ZnO protuberances were synthesized through a thermal evaporation route. The structure and morphology of the samples are studied and the growth mechanism is discussed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show both the ZnS stem and the ZnO protuberances have wurtzite structure and show preferred [001] oriented growth. The photoluminescence and field emission properties have also been investigated. Room temperature photoluminescence result shows it has a strong green light emission, which has potential application for green light emitter. Experimental results also show that the stalactite arrays have a good field emission property, with turn-on field of 11.4 V/mu m, and threshold field of 16 V/mu m. The ZnO protuberances on the ZnS stem might enhance the field emission notably.

A series of novel polyarylethersulfone (AB)(n) block copolymers with different segment lengths have been synthesized by nucleophilic solution polycondensation of phenoxide-terminated and fluorine-terminated oligomers; random copolymers have been prepared over the whole composition ranges. The structures of the resultant copolymers have been confirmed by FTIR, C-13 NMR spectra and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with two homopolymers and random copolymers, the block copolymers of this study possess excellent thermal stability (5% thermal decomposition under nitrogen atmosphere above 500 C) and high glass transition temperatures, and have a wide melt-processing temperature range. They may become a new class of mouldable high performance thermoplastics. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.

CoWO4 nano-particles were successfully synthesized at a low temperature of 270 degrees C by a molten salt method, and effects of such processing parameters as holding time and salt quantity on the crystallization and development Of CoWO4 crystallites were initially studied. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). and photoluminescent spectra techniques (PL), respectively. Experimental results showed that the well-crystallized CoWO4 nano-particles with ca. 45 nm in diameter could be obtained at 270 degrees C for a holding time of 8 h with 6:1 mass ratio of the salt to CoWO4 precursor, and XRD analysis evidenced that the as-prepared sample was a pure monoclinic phase Of CoWO4 with wolframite structure. Their PL spectra revealed that the CoWO4 nano-particles displayed a very strong PL peak at 453 nm with the excitation wavelength of 230 nm, and PL properties of CoWO4 crystallites relied on their crystalline state, especially on their particle size. Mesoporous spinel membranes as ultrafiltration membranes were prepared through a novel sol-gel technique. By in situ modification of the sol particle surface during the sol-gel process, control of the material structure on a nanometer scale from the earliest stages of processing was realized. Nano-particles with a chocolate-nut-like morphology, i.e. spinel MgAl2O4 as a shell and gamma -Al2O3 as a core, were first revealed by HRTEM results. The formation of the spinel phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). N-2 adsorption-desorption results showed that the mesoporous membranes had a narrow pore size distribution. Biodegradable polymers have opened an emerging area of great interest because they are the ultimate solution for the disposal problems of synthetic polymers used for short time applications in the environmental and biomedical field. The biodegradable polymers available until recently have a number of limitations in terms of strength and dimensional stability. Most of them have processing problems and are also very expensive. Recent developments in biodegradable polymers show that monomers and polymers obtained from renewable resources are important owing to their inherent biodegradability, biocompatibility and easy availability. The present study is, therefore, mostly concemed with the utilization of renewable resources by effecting chemical modification/copolymerization on existing synthetic polymers/natural polymers for introducing better biodegradability and material properties. The thesis describes multiple approaches in the design of new biodegradable polymers: (1) Chemical modification of an existing nonbiodegradable polymer, polyethylene, by anchoring monosaccharides after functionalization to introduce biodegradability. (2) Copolymerization of an existing biodegradable polymer, polylactide, with suitable monomers and/or polymers to tailor their properties to suit the emerging requirements such as (2a) graft copolymerization of lactide onto chitosan to get controlled solvation and biodegradability and (2b) copolymerization of polylactide with cycloaliphatic amide segments to improve upon the thermal properties and processability.
