Self-condensation of AB(2) type monomers (containing one A-type and two B-type functional groups) generates hyperbranched (HB) polymers that carry numerous B-type end-groups at their molecular periphery; thus, development of synthetic methods that directly provide quantitatively transformable peripheral B groups would be of immense value as this would provide easy access to multiply functionalized HB systems. A readily accessible AB(2) monomer, namely diallyl, 5-(4-hydroxybutoxy)isophthalate was synthesized, which on polymerization under standard melt-transesterfication conditions yielded a peripherally clickable HB polyester in a single step; the allyl groups were quantitatively reacted with a variety of thiols using the facile photoinitiated thiol-ene reaction to generate a wide range of derivatives, with varying solubility and thermal properties. Furthermore, it is shown that the peripheral allyl double bonds can also be readily epoxidized using meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid to yield interesting HB systems, which could potentially serve as a multifunctional cross-linking agent in epoxy formulations. The Al-pillared clay catalyst obtained by exposing activated clay powder to sulfuric acid and aluminium salts and calcining in air at 373-673 K, was found to be highly active for the title reaction. The results indicated that pillared layer clay of the mixed oxide has been employed as parent catalysts for their definite structure and special properties which can be modified by the substitution of L and B acid sites cations. Solid acid catalyst of Supported aluminium was found to be highly active and selective at the 373-473 K temperature range for heterogeneous esterification. The activity is mainly attributed to the Lewis (and a considerably small number of Bronsted) acid sites whose number and strength increased due to pillaring. The water produced in the esterification can be induced by Al3+, which makes the catalyst surface to form strong B acid. Their acidities are obtained by pH measurement. If only B acid sites are > 70%, and pH < 1 in the 2-ethoxyethanol, there exists an activity of esterification. The used catalyst gave identical results with that of the fresh one. X-ray diffraction spectra show that the composition and active phase of the used catalysts are the same as the fresh ones. The kinetic study of the reaction was carried out by an integral method of analysis. The kinetic equation of surface esterification is y = 2.36x - 0.98.

A series of silica-supported silicotungstic acid catalysts (H4SiW12O40, abbreviated as HSiW), modified with various loadings of Teflon (HSiW/SiO2-Teflon), were prepared by impregnation method. The surface properties of the catalysts were studied by means of XRD, BET, NH3-TPD and the Drop Shape Analyzer (DSA) measurements. Both the surface hydrophobicity and the surface lipophobicity of HSiW/SiO2-Teflon catalysts are enhanced by means of the addition of Teflon.

The vapor phase esterification of acetic acid with ethanol and n-butanol catalyzed by SiW12 supported on activated carbon was studied in a flow fixed-bed reactor in the range of 358 to 433 K. The effects of the reaction temperature, liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) as well as the molar ratio on the catalytic activity have been investigated. The kinetic studies showed that the rate of esterification was dependent on the partial pressures of the reactants and the addition of argon, an inert diluent in the system when the total pressure was kept at 1 atm. Also the alcohol structure has a profound effect on not only the rate of esterification, but also on the mechanism of esterification changing from a dual site mechanism for ethanol to a single site mechanism for n-butanol.

An interdigital mixer - redispersion capillary assembly was applied to prevent the liquid-liquid bubbly flow coalescence in microreactors. The redispersion capillary consisted of 1 mm long and 0.25 mm inner-diameter constrictions placed every 0.50 m along the channel length. The system was tested on the phase transfer catalyzed esterification to produce benzyl benzoate. The application of constrictions to prevent coalescence resulted in a better reproducibility compared to a capillary without the constrictions. By controlling the total flow rate and the aqueous-to-organic ratio the bubbly flow surface-volume ratio could be increased up to 230 700 m(2)m(-3). Compared to the conventional phase transfer catalyzed esterification, the continuous operation in the interdigital-redispersion capillary assembly eliminated the use of solvents and bases, removing an energy intensive step of distillation, while increasing process safety.

The phosphonium salt room temperature ionic liquid tetradecyltrihexylphosphonium chloride (THPC) has been employed as an efficient reusable media for the palladium catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of aryl halides, including aryl chlorides, under mild conditions. The cross-coupling reactions were found to proceed in THPC containing small amounts ofwater and toluene (single phase) using potassium phosphate and 1% Pd2(dba)3'CHCI3. Variously substituted iodobenzenes, including electron rich derivatives, reacted efficiently in THPC with a variety of arylboronic acids and were all complete within 1 hour at 50°C. The corresponding aryl bromides also reacted under these conditions with the addition of a catalytic amount of triphenylphosphine that allowed for complete conversion and high isolated yields. The reactions involving aryl chlorides were considerably slower, although the addition of triphenylphosphine and heating at 70°C allowed high conversion of electron deficient derivatives. Addition of water and hexane to the reaction products results in a triphasic system, from which the catalyst was then recycled by removing the top (hexanes) and bottom (aqueous) layers and adding the reagents to the ionic liquid which was heated again at 50°C; resulting in complete turnover of iodobenzene. Repetition of this procedure gave the biphenyl product in 82-97% yield (repeated five times) for both the initial and recycled reaction sequences. IL ESTERIFICATIONREACTION A new class oftrialkylphosphorane has been prepared through reaction of a trialkylphosphine with 2-chlorodimethylmalonate in the presence oftriethylamine. These new reagents promote the condensation reaction of carboxylic acids with alcohols to provide esters along with trialkylphosphine oxide and dimethylmalonate. The condensation reaction of chiral secondary alcohols can be controlled to give either high levels of inversion or retention through a subtle interplay involving basicity of the reaction media, solvent, and tuning the electronic and steric nature of the carboxylic acid and stenc nature of the phosphorane employed. A coherent mechanism is postulated to explain these observations involving reaction via an initial acyloxyphosphonium ion.

Claviceps purpurea is a biotrophic fungal pathogen of grasses causing the ergot disease. The infection process of C. purpurea on rye flowers is accompanied by pectin degradation and polygalacturonase (PG) activity represents a pathogenicity factor. Wheat is also infected by C. purpurea and we tested whether the presence of polygalacturonase inhibiting protein (PGIP) can affect pathogen infection and ergot disease development. Wheat transgenic plants expressing the bean PvPGIP2 did not show a clear reduction of disease symptoms when infected with C. purpurea. To ascertain the possible cause underlying this lack of improved resistance of PvPGIP2 plants, we expressed both polygalacturonases present in the C. purpurea genome, cppg1 and cppg2 in Pichia pastoris. In vitro assays using the heterologous expressed PGs and PvPGIP2 showed that neither PG is inhibited by this inhibitor. To further investigate the role of PG in the C. purpurea/wheat system, we demonstrated that the activity of both PGs of C. purpurea is reduced on highly methyl esterified pectin. Finally, we showed that this reduction in PG activity is relevant in planta, by inoculating with C. purpurea transgenic wheat plants overexpressing a pectin methyl esterase inhibitor (PMEI) and showing a high degree of pectin methyl esterification. We observed reduced disease symptoms in the transgenic line compared with null controls. Together, these results highlight the importance of pectin degradation for ergot disease development in wheat and sustain the notion that inhibition of pectin degradation may represent a possible route to control of ergot in cereals.
