Model-oriented strategies have been used to facilitate products customization in the software products lines (SPL) context and to generate the source code of these derived products through variability management. Most of these strategies use an UML (Unified Modeling Language)-based model specification. Despite its wide application, the UML-based model specification has some limitations such as the fact that it is essentially graphic, presents deficiencies regarding the precise description of the system architecture semantic representation, and generates a large model, thus hampering the visualization and comprehension of the system elements. In contrast, architecture description languages (ADLs) provide graphic and textual support for the structural representation of architectural elements, their constraints and interactions. This thesis introduces ArchSPL-MDD, a model-driven strategy in which models are specified and configured by using the LightPL-ACME ADL. Such strategy is associated to a generic process with systematic activities that enable to automatically generate customized source code from the product model. ArchSPLMDD strategy integrates aspect-oriented software development (AOSD), modeldriven development (MDD) and SPL, thus enabling the explicit modeling as well as the modularization of variabilities and crosscutting concerns. The process is instantiated by the ArchSPL-MDD tool, which supports the specification of domain models (the focus of the development) in LightPL-ACME. The ArchSPL-MDD uses the Ginga Digital TV middleware as case study. In order to evaluate the efficiency, applicability, expressiveness, and complexity of the ArchSPL-MDD strategy, a controlled experiment was carried out in order to evaluate and compare the ArchSPL-MDD tool with the GingaForAll tool, which instantiates the process that is part of the GingaForAll UML-based strategy. Both tools were used for configuring the products of Ginga SPL and generating the product source code

When a bolted joint is loaded in tension with dynamically, part of this load is absorbed by the bolt and rest is absorbed by the joint material. What determines the portion that is to absorbed by the bolt is the joint stiffness factor. This factor influences the tension which corresponds to pre-load and the safety factor for fatigue failure, thus being an important factor in the design of bolted joints. In this work, three methods of calculating the stiffness factor are compared through a spreadsheet in Excel software. The ratio of initial pre-load and the safety factor for fatigue failure depending on the stiffness factor graph is generated. The calculations for each method show results with a small difference. It is therefore recommended that each project case is analyzed, and depending on its conditions and the range of stiffness values, the more or less rigid method about the safety factor for fatigue failure is chosen. In general, the approximation method provides consistent results and can be easily calculated

La evolución de las redes eléctricas se dirige hacia lo que se conoce como “Smart Grids” o “Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes”. Estas “Smart Grids” se componen de subestaciones eléctricas, que a su vez se componen de unos dispositivos llamados IEDs (Dispositivos Electrónicos Inteligentes – Intelligent Electronic Devices). El diseño de IEDs se encuentra definido en la norma IEC 61850, que especifica además un Lenguaje de Configuración de Subestaciones (Substation Configuration Language SCL) para la definición de la configuración de subestaciones y sus IEDs. Hoy en día, este estándar internacional no sólo se utiliza para diseñar correctamente IEDs y asegurar su interoperabilidad, sino que también se utiliza para el diseño de otros dispositivos de la red eléctrica, como por ejemplo, medidores inteligentes. Sin embargo, aunque existe una tendencia cada vez mayor del uso de este estándar, la comprensión y el manejo del mismo resulta difícil debido al gran volumen de información que lo compone y del nivel de detalle que utiliza, por lo que su uso para el diseño de IEDs se hace tedioso sin la ayuda de un soporte software. Es por ello que, para facilitar la aplicación del estándar IEC 61850 en el diseño de IEDs se han desarrollado herramientas como “Visual SCL”, “SCL Explorer” o “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool”. En concreto, “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool” es una herramienta gráfica para el modelado de subestaciones electricas, generada mediante el uso de los frameworks Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) y Epsilon Generative Modeling Technologies (GMT) y desarrollada por el grupo de investigación SYST de la UPM. El objetivo de este proyecto es añadir una nueva funcionalidad a la herramienta “61850 Visual SCL DesignTool”. Esta nueva funcionalidad consiste en la generación automática de un fichero de configuración de subestaciones eléctricas según el estándar IEC 61850 a partir de de una herramienta de diseño gráfico. Este fichero, se denomina SCD (Substation Configuration Description), y se trata de un fichero XML conforme a un esquema XSD (XML Schema Definition) mediante el que se define el lenguaje de configuración de subestaciones SCL del IEC 61850. Para el desarrollo de este proyecto, es necesario el estudio del lenguaje para la configuración de subestaciones SCL, así como del lenguaje gráfico específico de dominio definido por la herramienta “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool”, la estructura de los ficheros SCD, y finalmente, del lenguaje EGL (Epsilon Generation Language) para la transformación y generación automática de código a partir de modelos EMF. ABSTRACT Electrical networks are evolving to “Smart Grids”. Smart Grids are composed of electrical substations that in turn are composed of devices called IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices). The design of IEDs is defined by the IEC 61850 standard, which also specifies a Substation Configuration Languaje (SCL) used to define the configuration of substations and their IEDs. Nowadays, this international standard is not only used to design properly IEDs and guarantee their interoperability, but it is also used to design different electrical network devices, such as, smart meters. However, although the use of this standard is growing, its compression as well as its management, is still difficult due to its large volume of information and its level of detail. As a result, designing IEDs becomes a tedious task without a software support. As a consequence of this, in order to make easier the application of the IEC 61850 standard while designing IEDs, some software tools have been developed, such as: “Visual SCL”, “SCL Explorer” or “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool”. In particular, “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool” is a graphical tool used to make electrical substations models, and developed with the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) and Epsilon Generative Modeling Technologies (GMT) by the research group SYST of the UPM. The aim of this project is to add a new functionality to “61850 Visual SCL DesignTool”. This new functionality consists of the automatic code generation of a substation configuration file according to the IEC 61850 standard. This file is called SCD (Substation Configuration Description), and it is a XML file that follows a XSD (XML Schema Definition) that defines the Substation Configuration Language (SCL) of the IEC 61850. In order to develop this project, it is necessary to study the Substation Configuration Language (SCL), the domain-specific graphical languaje defined by the tool “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool”, the structure of a SCD file, and the Epsilon Generation Language (EGL) used for the automatic code generation from EMF models

Durante los últimos años ha sido creciente el uso de las unidades de procesamiento gráfico, más conocidas como GPU (Graphic Processing Unit), en aplicaciones de propósito general, dejando a un lado el objetivo para el que fueron creadas y que no era otro que el renderizado de gráficos por computador. Este crecimiento se debe en parte a la evolución que han experimentado estos dispositivos durante este tiempo y que les ha dotado de gran potencia de cálculo, consiguiendo que su uso se extienda desde ordenadores personales a grandes cluster. Este hecho unido a la proliferación de sensores RGB-D de bajo coste ha hecho que crezca el número de aplicaciones de visión que hacen uso de esta tecnología para la resolución de problemas, así como también para el desarrollo de nuevas aplicaciones. Todas estas mejoras no solamente se han realizado en la parte hardware, es decir en los dispositivos, sino también en la parte software con la aparición de nuevas herramientas de desarrollo que facilitan la programación de estos dispositivos GPU. Este nuevo paradigma se acuñó como Computación de Propósito General sobre Unidades de Proceso Gráfico (General-Purpose computation on Graphics Processing Units, GPGPU). Los dispositivos GPU se clasifican en diferentes familias, en función de las distintas características hardware que poseen. Cada nueva familia que aparece incorpora nuevas mejoras tecnológicas que le permite conseguir mejor rendimiento que las anteriores. No obstante, para sacar un rendimiento óptimo a un dispositivo GPU es necesario configurarlo correctamente antes de usarlo. Esta configuración viene determinada por los valores asignados a una serie de parámetros del dispositivo. Por tanto, muchas de las implementaciones que hoy en día hacen uso de los dispositivos GPU para el registro denso de nubes de puntos 3D, podrían ver mejorado su rendimiento con una configuración óptima de dichos parámetros, en función del dispositivo utilizado. Es por ello que, ante la falta de un estudio detallado del grado de afectación de los parámetros GPU sobre el rendimiento final de una implementación, se consideró muy conveniente la realización de este estudio. Este estudio no sólo se realizó con distintas configuraciones de parámetros GPU, sino también con diferentes arquitecturas de dispositivos GPU. El objetivo de este estudio es proporcionar una herramienta de decisión que ayude a los desarrolladores a la hora implementar aplicaciones para dispositivos GPU. Uno de los campos de investigación en los que más prolifera el uso de estas tecnologías es el campo de la robótica ya que tradicionalmente en robótica, sobre todo en la robótica móvil, se utilizaban combinaciones de sensores de distinta naturaleza con un alto coste económico, como el láser, el sónar o el sensor de contacto, para obtener datos del entorno. Más tarde, estos datos eran utilizados en aplicaciones de visión por computador con un coste computacional muy alto. Todo este coste, tanto el económico de los sensores utilizados como el coste computacional, se ha visto reducido notablemente gracias a estas nuevas tecnologías. Dentro de las aplicaciones de visión por computador más utilizadas está el registro de nubes de puntos. Este proceso es, en general, la transformación de diferentes nubes de puntos a un sistema de coordenadas conocido. Los datos pueden proceder de fotografías, de diferentes sensores, etc. Se utiliza en diferentes campos como son la visión artificial, la imagen médica, el reconocimiento de objetos y el análisis de imágenes y datos de satélites. El registro se utiliza para poder comparar o integrar los datos obtenidos en diferentes mediciones. En este trabajo se realiza un repaso del estado del arte de los métodos de registro 3D. Al mismo tiempo, se presenta un profundo estudio sobre el método de registro 3D más utilizado, Iterative Closest Point (ICP), y una de sus variantes más conocidas, Expectation-Maximization ICP (EMICP). Este estudio contempla tanto su implementación secuencial como su implementación paralela en dispositivos GPU, centrándose en cómo afectan a su rendimiento las distintas configuraciones de parámetros GPU. Como consecuencia de este estudio, también se presenta una propuesta para mejorar el aprovechamiento de la memoria de los dispositivos GPU, permitiendo el trabajo con nubes de puntos más grandes, reduciendo el problema de la limitación de memoria impuesta por el dispositivo. El funcionamiento de los métodos de registro 3D utilizados en este trabajo depende en gran medida de la inicialización del problema. En este caso, esa inicialización del problema consiste en la correcta elección de la matriz de transformación con la que se iniciará el algoritmo. Debido a que este aspecto es muy importante en este tipo de algoritmos, ya que de él depende llegar antes o no a la solución o, incluso, no llegar nunca a la solución, en este trabajo se presenta un estudio sobre el espacio de transformaciones con el objetivo de caracterizarlo y facilitar la elección de la transformación inicial a utilizar en estos algoritmos.

Trabajo orientado en el área de ecuaciones diferenciales enfocándose en el método gráfico para establecer el campo de pendiente de una ecuación diferencial y el método de aproximaciones numéricas para aproximar la solución de una ecuación diferencial. Presenta los métodos de Euler, Runge-Kutta de cuarto orden y el método multipasos de Adams-Bashforth-Moulton. Asimismo, se explica las ecuaciones mediante el uso del software para los métodos gráficos tales como el Maple y Geogebra.

This article aimed at comparing the accuracy of linear measurement tools of different commercial software packages. Eight fully edentulous dry mandibles were selected for this study. Incisor, canine, premolar, first molar and second molar regions were selected. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were obtained with i-CAT Next Generation. Linear bone measurements were performed by one observer on the cross-sectional images using three different software packages: XoranCat®, OnDemand3D® and KDIS3D®, all able to assess DICOM images. In addition, 25% of the sample was reevaluated for the purpose of reproducibility. The mandibles were sectioned to obtain the gold standard for each region. Intraclass coefficients (ICC) were calculated to examine the agreement between the two periods of evaluation; the one-way analysis of variance performed with the post-hoc Dunnett test was used to compare each of the software-derived measurements with the gold standard. The ICC values were excellent for all software packages. The least difference between the software-derived measurements and the gold standard was obtained with the OnDemand3D and KDIS3D (-0.11 and -0.14 mm, respectively), and the greatest, with the XoranCAT (+0.25 mm). However, there was no statistical significant difference between the measurements obtained with the different software packages and the gold standard (p> 0.05). In conclusion, linear bone measurements were not influenced by the software package used to reconstruct the image from CBCT DICOM data.

This paper presents SMarty, a variability management approach for UML-based software product lines (PL). SMarty is supported by a UML profile, the SMartyProfile, and a process for managing variabilities, the SMartyProcess. SMartyProfile aims at representing variabilities, variation points, and variants in UML models by applying a set of stereotypes. SMartyProcess consists of a set of activities that is systematically executed to trace, identify, and control variabilities in a PL based on SMarty. It also identifies variability implementation mechanisms and analyzes specific product configurations. In addition, a more comprehensive application of SMarty is presented using SEI's Arcade Game Maker PL. An evaluation of SMarty and related work are discussed.

Thousands of Free and Open Source Software Projects (FSP) were, and continually are, created on the Internet. This scenario increases the number of opportunities to collaborate to the same extent that it promotes competition for users and contributors, who can guide projects to superior levels, unachievable by founders alone. Thus, given that the main goal of FSP founders is to improve their projects by means of collaboration, the importance to understand and manage the capacity of attracting users and contributors to the project is established. To support researchers and founders in this challenge, the concept of attractiveness is introduced in this paper, which develops a theoretical-managerial toolkit about the causes, indicators and consequences of attractiveness, enabling its strategic management.

Objective To evaluate drug interaction software programs and determine their accuracy in identifying drug-drug interactions that may occur in intensive care units. Setting The study was developed in Brazil. Method Drug interaction software programs were identified through a bibliographic search in PUBMED and in LILACS (database related to the health sciences published in Latin American and Caribbean countries). The programs` sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values were determined to assess their accuracy in detecting drug-drug interactions. The accuracy of the software programs identified was determined using 100 clinically important interactions and 100 clinically unimportant ones. Stockley`s Drug Interactions 8th edition was employed as the gold standard in the identification of drug-drug interaction. Main outcome Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values. Results The programs studied were: Drug Interaction Checker (DIC), Drug-Reax (DR), and Lexi-Interact (LI). DR displayed the highest sensitivity (0.88) and DIC showed the lowest (0.69). A close similarity was observed among the programs regarding specificity (0.88-0.92) and positive predictive values (0.88-0.89). The DIC had the lowest negative predictive value (0.75) and DR the highest (0.91). Conclusion The DR and LI programs displayed appropriate sensitivity and specificity for identifying drug-drug interactions of interest in intensive care units. Drug interaction software programs help pharmacists and health care teams in the prevention and recognition of drug-drug interactions and optimize safety and quality of care delivered in intensive care units.

Support for interoperability and interchangeability of software components which are part of a fieldbus automation system relies on the definition of open architectures, most of them involving proprietary technologies. Concurrently, standard, open and non-proprietary technologies, such as XML, SOAP, Web Services and the like, have greatly evolved and been diffused in the computing area. This article presents a FOUNDATION fieldbus (TM) device description technology named Open-EDD, based on XML and other related technologies (XLST, DOM using Xerces implementation, OO, XMIL Schema), proposing an open and nonproprietary alternative to the EDD (Electronic Device Description). This initial proposal includes defining Open-EDDML as the programming language of the technology in the FOUNDATION fieldbus (TM) protocol, implementing a compiler and a parser, and finally, integrating and testing the new technology using field devices and a commercial fieldbus configurator. This study attests that this new technology is feasible and can be applied to other configurators or HMI applications used in fieldbus automation systems. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the proposal for a reference model for developing software aimed at small companies. Despite the importance of that represent the small software companies in Latin America, the fact of not having its own standards, and able to meet their specific, has created serious difficulties in improving their process and also in quality certification. In this sense and as a contribution to better understanding of the subject they propose a reference model and as a means to validate the proposal, presents a report of its application in a small Brazilian company, committed to certification of the quality model MPS.BR.

This report describes recent updates to the custom-built data-acquisition hardware operated by the Center for Hypersonics. In 2006, an ISA-to-USB bridging card was developed as part of Luke Hillyard's final-year thesis. This card allows the hardware to be connected to any recent personal computers via a (USB or RS232) serial port and it provides a number of simple text-based commands for control of the hardware. A graphical user interface program was also updated to help the experimenter manage the data acquisition functions. Sampled data is stored in text files that have been compressed with the gzip for mat. To simplify the later archiving or transport of the data, all files specific to a shot are stored in a single directory. This includes a text file for the run description, the signal configuration file and the individual sampled-data files, one for each signal that was recorded.

The XSophe-Sophe-XeprView((R)) computer simulation software suite enables scientists to easily determine spin Hamiltonian parameters from isotropic, randomly oriented and single crystal continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW EPR) spectra from radicals and isolated paramagnetic metal ion centers or clusters found in metalloproteins, chemical systems and materials science. XSophe provides an X-windows graphical user interface to the Sophe programme and allows: creation of multiple input files, local and remote execution of Sophe, the display of sophelog (output from Sophe) and input parameters/files. Sophe is a sophisticated computer simulation software programme employing a number of innovative technologies including; the Sydney OPera HousE (SOPHE) partition and interpolation schemes, a field segmentation algorithm, the mosaic misorientation linewidth model, parallelization and spectral optimisation. In conjunction with the SOPHE partition scheme and the field segmentation algorithm, the SOPHE interpolation scheme and the mosaic misorientation linewidth model greatly increase the speed of simulations for most spin systems. Employing brute force matrix diagonalization in the simulation of an EPR spectrum from a high spin Cr(III) complex with the spin Hamiltonian parameters g(e) = 2.00, D = 0.10 cm(-1), E/D = 0.25, A(x) = 120.0, A(y) = 120.0, A(z) = 240.0 x 10(-4) cm(-1) requires a SOPHE grid size of N = 400 (to produce a good signal to noise ratio) and takes 229.47 s. In contrast the use of either the SOPHE interpolation scheme or the mosaic misorientation linewidth model requires a SOPHE grid size of only N = 18 and takes 44.08 and 0.79 s, respectively. Results from Sophe are transferred via the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) to XSophe and subsequently to XeprView((R)) where the simulated CW EPR spectra (1D and 2D) can be compared to the experimental spectra. Energy level diagrams, transition roadmaps and transition surfaces aid the interpretation of complicated randomly oriented CW EPR spectra and can be viewed with a web browser and an OpenInventor scene graph viewer.

Using Landsat imagery, forest canopy density (FCD) estimated with the FCD Mapper®, was correlated with predominant height (PDH, measured as the average height of the tallest 50 trees per hectare) for 20 field plots measured in native forest at Noosa Heads, south-east Queensland, Australia. A corresponding image was used to calculate FCD in Leyte Island, the Philippines and was validated on the ground for accuracy. The FCD Mapper was produced for the International Tropical Timber Organisation and estimates FCD as an index of canopy density using reflectance characteristics of Landsat Enhanced Thematic (ETM) Mapper images. The FCD Mapper is a ‘semi-expert’ computer program which uses interactive screens to allow the operator to make decisions concerning the classification of land into bare soil, grass and forest. At Noosa, a positive strong nonlinear relationship (r2 = 0.86) was found between FCD and PDH for 15 field plots with variable PDH but complete canopy closure. An additional five field plots were measured in forest with a broken canopy and the software assessed these plots as having a much lower FCD than forest with canopy closure. FCD estimates for forest and agricultural land in the island of Leyte and subsequent field validation showed that at appropriate settings, the FCD Mapper differentiated between tropical rainforest and banana or coconut plantation. These findings suggest that in forests with a closed canopy this remote sensing technique has promise for forest inventory and productivity assessment. The findings also suggest that the software has promise for discriminating between native forest with a complete canopy and forest which has a broken canopy, such as coconut or banana plantation.
