New chiral diphosphazane ligands of the type Ph(2)PN(S-*CHMePh)PYY' {YY'= Ph(2) (2), O2C6H4 (3); Y= Ph, Y'= Cl {4a (SS), 4b (SR)}, N(2)C(3)HMe(2)-3,5 {5a (SR), 5b (SS)} are synthesised starting from a chiral aminophosphine, Ph(2)PNH(S-*CHMePh) (1). The structure of one of the diastereomer 5a has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction {Orthorhombic system, P2(1)2(1)2(1); a=10.456 (4), b=15.362 (7), c=17.379 (6) Angstrom, Z=4}. Transition metal mononuclear complexes [Rh{eta(2)-(Ph(2)P)(2)N- (S-*CHMePh)}(2)](+)(BF4)(-) (6), [PdCl2{eta(2)-(Ph(2)P)(2)N(S-*CHMePh)}] (7) and [PtCl2{eta(2)-(Ph(2)P)(2)N- (S-*CHMePh)}] (8) have also been synthesised. The structure of the palladium complex 7 is solved by X-ray crystallography {Orthorhombic system, P2(1)2(1)2(1); a=8.746 (2), b=18.086 (2), c=20.811 (3) Angstrom, Z=4}. All these compounds are characterised by micro analyses, IR and NMR spectroscopic data.

A catalyst of Rh nanoparticles supported on a carbon nanofiber, 5 wt.% Rh/CNF, with an average size of 2-3 nm has been prepared by a method of incipient wetness impregnation. The catalyst presented a high activity in the ring hydrogenation of phenol in a medium of supercritical CO2 (scCO(2)) at a low temperature of 323 K. The presence of compressed CO2 retards hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol under the reaction conditions used, and this is beneficial for the formation of cyclohexanone, increasing the selectivity to cyclohexanone.

The ring hydrogenation of benzoic acid to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid over charcoal-supported transition metal catalysts in supercritical CO2 medium has been studied in the present work. The cyclohexanecarboxylic acid can be produced efficiently in supercritical CO2 at the low reaction temperature of 323 K. The presence of CO2 increases the reaction rate and several parameters have been discussed.

A series of silica-supported 12-silicotungstic acid catalysts (H4SiW12O40, abbreviated as HSiW), modified with various loadings of Teflon (HSiW/SiO2-Teflon), were prepared by an impregnation method. The surface properties of the catalysts were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, NH3-TPD and the Drop Shape Analysis (DSA). SEM results combined with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) measurements of HSiW/SiO2-Teflon revealed that F-compound (Teflon) is effectively coated on the catalyst surface. The contact angles for water and oil of 50 wt% HSiW/SiO2 and HSiW/SiO2-Teflon indicate that HSiW/SiO2-Teflon catalyst enhances not only the surface hydrophobicity but also the surface lipophobicity by means of the addition of Teflon. Silica-supported 12-silicotungstic acid modified with Teflon exhibits higher C-8(=) selectivity and longer lifetime than that of silica-supported 12-silicotungstic acid in isobutene oligomerization. Thus, surface-appropriate lipophobicity of catalysts may be effective for decreasing the interaction between coke precursors and the catalyst surface and for removing deposited coke more easily.

X-1-y(2)SiO(5):Eu3+ and X-1-Y2SiO5:Ce3+ and/or Tb3+ phosphor layers have been coated on nonaggregated, monodisperse, submicron spherical SiO2 particles by a sol-gel process, followed by surface reaction at high temperature (1000 degrees C), to give core/shell structured SiO2@Y2SiO5:Eu3+ and SiO2@Y2SiO5:Ce3+/Tb3+ particles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), TEM, photoluminescence (PL), low voltage cathodoluminescence (CL), and time-resolved PL spectra and lifetimes are used to characterize these materials. The XRD results indicate that X-1-Y2SiO5 layers have been successfully coated on the sur- face Of SiO2 particles, as further verified by the FESEM and TEM images. The PL and CL studies suggest that SiO2@Y2SiO5:Eu3+, SiO2@Y2SiO5:Tb3+ (or Ce3+/Tb3+), and SiO2@Y2SiO5:Ce3+ core/shell particles exhibit red (Eu3+, 613 rim: D-5(0)-F-7(2)), green (Tb3+, 542nm: D-5(4)-F-7(5)), or blue (Ce3+, 450nm: 5d-4f) luminescence, respectively. Pl, excitation, emission, and time-resolved spectra demonstrate that there is an energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in the SiO2@Y2SiO5:Ce3+,Tb3+ core/shell particles.

Dodecatungsto-silicic H4SiW12O40 and -phosphoric acids H3PW12O40 were deposited on silica by a classical impregnation technique. The resulting materials were studied by in situ Raman and infrared spectroscopy, XPS and by solid-state H-1 MAS NMR as a function of their dehydroxylation temperature. The data show that in the case of H3PW12O40 three silanol groups are protonated while in the case of H4SiW12O40 at least one acidic proton remains. Upon heating this proton reacts leading to a disordered structure and a broadening of the W-O Raman bands.

Catalysis is an essential technology in manufacturing industries. The investigation based on supported vanadia catalysts and it’s sulfated analogues. Vanadia is a transition metal oxide and is used in oxidation reactions in chemical industry. It is more active and selective catalysts on suitable supports. The work deals with preparation of vanadia incorporated tin oxide and zirconia systems by wet impregnation. Physico-chemical characterization using instrumental techniques like BET etc. The surface acidic properties were determined by the ammonia TPD studies, Perylene absorption studies and Cumene conversion reaction. The catalytic activities of the prepared systems are tested by Friedel-Crafts benzylation of arenes and Bechmann rearrangement of Cyclohexanol oxime. Here the rector reactions are relatively rare. So to test the application of the catalyst systems for the selective oxidation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone and finally evaluate the catalytic activity of the systems for the vapour phase oxidative dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene, which leads to the formation of Industrially important compound ‘styrene’ is another objective of this work

This thesis deals with the synthesis and charcterisation of some supported transition metal complexes and their catalytic properties. Two industrially important reactions were carried out: i) cyclohexanol oxidation and ii) hydrodesulphurization of diesel. Thesis is divided into nine chapters. An overview of the heterogenised homogeneous systems is given in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 deals with the materials and methods used for the preparation and characterisation. Details regarding the synthesis and characterisation of zeolite encapsulated transition metal complexes are given in Chapter 3 to Chapter 7. In Chapter 8, the results of catalytic activity studies of the cyclohexanol oxidation using the zeolite encapsulated complexes are presented. Details of preparation of hydrodesulphurization catalysts through the molecular designed dispersion method, their characterization and catalytic activity studies are presented in Chapter 9. References are given at the end of the thesis.
