Two experiments examined the effects of interpersonal and group-based similarity on perceived self-other differences in persuasibility (i.e. on third-person effects, Davison, 1983). Results of Experiment 1 (N=121), based on experimentally-created groups, indicated that third-person perceptions with respect to the impact of televised product ads were accentuated when the comparison was made with interpersonally different others. Contrary to predictions, third-person perceptions were not affected by group-based similarity (i.e. ingroup or outgroup other). Results of Experiment 2 (N = 102), based an an enduring social identity, indicated that both interpersonal and group-based similarity moderated perceptions of the impact on self and other of least-liked product ads. Overall, third-person effects were more pronounced with respect to interpersonally dissimilar others. However, when social identity was salient, information about interpersonal similarity of the target did not affect perceived self-other differences with respect to ingroup targets. Results also highlighted significant differences in third-person perceptions according to the perceiver's affective evaluation of the persuasive message. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Polyamine-induced inward rectification of cyclic nucleotide-gated channels was studied in inside-out patches from rat olfactory neurons. The polyamines, spermine, spermidine and putrescine, induced an 'instantaneous' voltage-dependent inhibition with K-d values at 0 mV of 39, 121 mu M and 2.7 mM, respectively. Hill coefficients for inhibition were significantly < 1, suggesting an allosteric inhibitory mechanism. The Woodhull model for voltage-dependent block predicted that all 3 polyamines bound to a site 1/3 of the electrical distance through the membrane from the internal side. Instantaneous inhibition was relieved at positive potentials, implying significant polyamine permeation. Spermine also induced exponential current relaxations to a 'steady-state' impermeant level. This inhibition was also mediated by a binding site 1/3 of the electrical distance through the pore, but with a K-d of 2.6 mM. Spermine inhibition was explained by postulating two spermine binding sites at a similar depth. Occupation of the first site occurs rapidly and with high affinity, but once a spermine molecule has bound, it inhibits spermine occupation of the second binding site via electrostatic repulsion. This repulsion is overcome at higher membrane potentials, but results in a lower apparent binding affinity for the second spermine molecule. The on-rate constant for the second spermine binding saturated at a low rate (similar to 200 sec(-1) at +120 mV), providing further evidence for an allosteric mechanism. Polyamine-induced inward rectification was significant at physiological concentrations.

The olfactory neuroepithelium is a highly plastic region of the nervous system that undergoes continual turnover of primary olfactory neurons throughout life. The mechanisms responsible for persistent growth and guidance of primary olfactory axons along the olfactory nerve are unknown. In the present study, we used antibodies against the Eph-related receptor, EphA5, to localise EphA5, and recombinant EDhA5-IgG fusion protein to localise its ligands. We found that although both EphA5 and its ligands were both expressed by primary olfactory neurons within the embryonic olfactory nerve pathway, there was no graded or complementary expression pattern. In contrast, the expression patterns altered postnatally such that primary olfactory neurons expressed the ligands, whereas the second-order olfactory neurons, the mitral cells, expressed EphA5. The role of EphA5 was analysed by blocking EphA5-ligand interactions in explant cultures of olfactory neuroepithelium using anti-EphA5 antibodies and recombinant EphA5. These perturbations reduced neurite outgrowth from explant cultures and suggest that intrafascicular axon repulsion may serve to limit adhesion and optimise conditions for axon growth. We consider the electronic properties of layered molecular crystals of the type theta -D(2)A where A is an anion and D is a donor molecule such as bis-(ethylenedithia-tetrathiafulvalene) (BEDT-TTF), which is arranged in the theta -type pattern within the layers. We argue that the simplest strongly correlated electron model that can describe the rich phase diagram of these materials is the extended Hubbard model on the square lattice at one-quarter filling. In the limit where the Coulomb repulsion on a single site is large, the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion V plays a crucial role. When V is much larger than the intermolecular hopping integral t the ground state is an insulator with charge ordering. In this phase antiferromagnetism arises due to a novel fourth-order superexchange process around a plaquette on the square lattice. We argue that the charge ordered phase is destroyed below a critical nonzero value V, of the order of t. Slave-boson theory is used to explicitly demonstrate this for the SU(N) generalization of the model, in the large-N limit. We also discuss the relevance of the model to the all-organic family beta-(BEDT-TTF)(2)SF5YSO3 where Y=CH2CF2, CH2, CHF.

The problem of the negative values of the interaction parameter in the equation of Frumkin has been analyzed with respect to the adsorption of nonionic molecules on energetically homogeneous surface. For this purpose, the adsorption states of a homologue series of ethoxylated nonionic surfactants on air/water interface have been determined using four different models and literature data (surface tension isotherms). The results obtained with the Frumkin adsorption isotherm imply repulsion between the adsorbed species (corresponding to negative values of the interaction parameter), while the classical lattice theory for energetically homogeneous surface (e.g., water/air) admits attraction alone. It appears that this serious contradiction can be overcome by assuming heterogeneity in the adsorption layer, that is, effects of partial condensation (formation of aggregates) on the surface. Such a phenomenon is suggested in the Fainerman-Lucassen-Reynders-Miller (FLM) 'Aggregation model'. Despite the limitations of the latter model (e.g., monodispersity of the aggregates), we have been able to estimate the sign and the order of magnitude of Frumkin's interaction parameter and the range of the aggregation numbers of the surface species. Motivated by the unconventional properties and rich phase diagram of NaxCoO2 we consider the electronic and magnetic properties of a two-dimensional Hubbard model on an isotropic triangular lattice doped with electrons away from half-filling. Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations predict that for negative intersite hopping amplitudes (t < 0) and an on-site Coulomb repulsion, U, comparable to the bandwidth, the system displays properties typical of a weakly correlated metal. In contrast, for t > 0 a large enhancement of the effective mass, itinerant ferromagnetism, and a metallic phase with a Curie-Weiss magnetic susceptibility are found in a broad electron doping range. The different behavior encountered is a consequence of the larger noninteracting density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level for t > 0 than for t < 0, which effectively enhances the mass and the scattering amplitude of the quasiparticles. The shape of the DOS is crucial for the occurrence of ferromagnetism as for t > 0 the energy cost of polarizing the system is much smaller than for t < 0. Our observation of Nagaoka ferromagnetism is consistent with the A-type antiferromagnetism (i.e., ferromagnetic layers stacked antiferromagnetically) observed in neutron scattering experiments on NaxCoO2. The transport and magnetic properties measured in NaxCoO2 are consistent with DMFT predictions of a metal close to the Mott insulator and we discuss the role of Na ordering in driving the system towards the Mott transition. We propose that the Curie-Weiss metal phase observed in NaxCoO2 is a consequence of the crossover from a bad metal with incoherent quasiparticles at temperatures T > T-* and Fermi liquid behavior with enhanced parameters below T-*, where T-* is a low energy coherence scale induced by strong local Coulomb electron correlations. Our analysis also shows that the one band Hubbard model on a triangular lattice is not enough to describe the unusual properties of NaxCoO2 and is used to identify the simplest relevant model that captures the essential physics in NaxCoO2. We propose a model which allows for the Na ordering phenomena observed in the system which, we propose, drives the system close to the Mott insulating phase even at large dopings.

A study of spin-orbit mixing and nephelauxetic effects in the electronic spectra of nickel(II)-encapsulating complexes involving mixed nitrogen and sulfur donors is reported. As the number of sulfur donors is systematically varied through the series [Ni(N6-xSx)](2+) (x = 0-6), the spin-forbidden (3)A(2)g --> E-1(g) and (3)A(2g) --> (1)A(1g) transitions undergo a considerable reduction in energy whereas the spin-allowed transitions are relatively unchanged. The [Ni(diAMN(6)sar)](2+) and [Ni(AMN(5)Ssar)](2+) complexes exhibit an unusual band shape for the (3)A(2g) --> T-3(2g) transition which is shown to arise from spin-orbit mixing of the E spin-orbit levels associated with the E-1(g) and T-3(2g) states. A significant differential nephelauxetic effect also arises from the covalency differences between the t(2g) and e(g) orbitals with the result that no single set of Racah B and C interelectron repulsion parameters adequately fit the observed spectra. Using a differential covalency ligand-field model, the spectral transitions are successfully reproduced with three independent variables corresponding to 10Dq and the covalency parameters f(t) and f(e), associated with the t(2g) and e(g) orbitals, respectively. The small decrease in f(t) from unity is largely attributed to central-field covalency effects whereas the dramatic reduction in f(e) with increasing number of sulfur donors is a direct consequence of the increased metal-ligand covalency associated with the sulfur donors. Covalency differences between the t(2g) and e(g) orbitals also result in larger 10Dq values than those obtained simply from the energy of the (3)A(2g) --> T-3(2g) spin-allowed transition.

We consider the possibility that the electrons injected into organic field-effect transistors are strongly correlated. A single layer of acenes can be modeled by a Hubbard Hamiltonian similar to that used for the κ-(BEDT-TTF)2X family of organic superconductors. The injected electrons do not necessarily undergo a transition to a Mott insulator state as they would in bulk crystals when the system is half-filled. We calculate the fillings needed for obtaining insulating states in the framework of the slave-boson theory and in the limit of large Hubbard repulsion U. We also suggest that these Mott states are unstable above some critical interlayer coupling or long-range Coulomb interaction.

We study, with exact diagonalization, the zero temperature properties of the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a square lattice. We find that increasing the ratio of the intersite Coulomb repulsion, V, to the bandwidth drives the system from a metal to a charge ordered insulator. The evolution of the optical conductivity spectrum with increasing V is in agreement with the observed optical conductivity of several layered molecular crystals with the theta and beta crystal structures.

The exact description of the thermodynamics of solutions has been used to describe, without approximation, the distribution of all the components of an incompressible solution in a centrifuge cell at sedimentation equilibrium. Thermodynamic parameters describing the interactions between solute components of known molar mass can be obtained by direct analysis of the experimental data. Interpretation of the measured thermodynamic parameters in terms of molecular interactions requires that an arbitrary distinction be made between nonassociative forces, like hard-sphere volume-exclusion and mean-field electrostatic repulsion or attraction, and specific short-range forces of association that give rise to the formation of molecular aggregates. Provided the former can be accounted for adequately, the effects of the latter can be elucidated in the form of good estimates of the equilibrium constants for the reactions of aggregation.

To investigate the effect of the N-terminal Slit2 protein on neuronal survival and development, recombinant human N-terminal Slit2 (N-Slit2) was assayed against isolated embryonic chick dorsal root ganglion sensory, ciliary ganglion and paravertebral sympathetic neurons. N-Slit2 promoted significant levels of neuronal survival and neurite extension in all of these populations. The protein was also assayed against postnatal mouse dorsal root ganglion neurons and found to promote neuronal survival in a similar manner. These findings suggest the Slit proteins may play an important role during development of the nervous system, mediating cellular survival in addition to the well documented role these proteins play in axonal and neuronal chemorepulsion.

We investigate the influence of strong directional, or bonding, interactions on the phase diagram of complex fluids, and in particular on the liquid-vapour critical point. To this end we revisit a simple model and theory for associating fluids which consist of spherical particles having a hard-core repulsion, complemented by three short-ranged attractive sites on the surface (sticky spots). Two of the spots are of type A and one is of type B; the interactions between each pair of spots have strengths [image omitted], [image omitted] and [image omitted]. The theory is applied over the whole range of bonding strengths and results are interpreted in terms of the equilibrium cluster structures of the coexisting phases. In systems where unlike sites do not interact (i.e. where [image omitted]), the critical point exists all the way to [image omitted]. By contrast, when [image omitted], there is no critical point below a certain finite value of [image omitted]. These somewhat surprising results are rationalised in terms of the different network structures of the two systems: two long AA chains are linked by one BB bond (X-junction) in the former case, and by one AB bond (Y-junction) in the latter. The vapour-liquid transition may then be viewed as the condensation of these junctions and we find that X-junctions condense for any attractive [image omitted] (i.e. for any fraction of BB bonds), whereas condensation of the Y-junctions requires that [image omitted] be above a finite threshold (i.e. there must be a finite fraction of AB bonds).

We use a simple model of associating fluids which consists of spherical particles having a hard-core repulsion, complemented by three short-ranged attractive sites on the surface (sticky spots). Two of the spots are of type A and one is of type B; the bonding interactions between each pair of spots have strengths epsilon(AA), epsilon(BB), and epsilon(AB). The theory is applied over the whole range of bonding strengths and the results are interpreted in terms of the equilibrium cluster structures of the phases. In addition to our numerical results, we derive asymptotic expansions for the free energy in the limits for which there is no liquid-vapor critical point: linear chains (epsilon(AA)not equal 0, epsilon(AB)=epsilon(BB)=0), hyperbranched polymers (epsilon(AB)not equal 0, epsilon(AA)=epsilon(BB)=0), and dimers (epsilon(BB)not equal 0, epsilon(AA)=epsilon(AB)=0). These expansions also allow us to calculate the structure of the critical fluid by perturbing around the above limits, yielding three different types of condensation: of linear chains (AA clusters connected by a few AB or BB bonds); of hyperbranched polymers (AB clusters connected by AA bonds); or of dimers (BB clusters connected by AA bonds). Interestingly, there is no critical point when epsilon(AA) vanishes despite the fact that AA bonds alone cannot drive condensation.

We numerically study a simple fluid composed of particles having a hard-core repulsion complemented by two patchy attractive sites on the particle poles. An appropriate choice of the patch angular width allows for the formation of ring structures which, at low temperatures and low densities, compete with the growth of linear aggregates. The simplicity of the model makes it possible to compare simulation results and theoretical predictions based on the Wertheim perturbation theory, specialized to the case in which ring formation is allowed. Such a comparison offers a unique framework for establishing the quality of the analytic predictions. We find that the Wertheim theory describes remarkably well the simulation results.

Sectorization means dividing a set of basic units into sectors or parts, a procedure that occurs in several contexts, such as political, health and school districting, social networks and sales territory or airspace assignment, to achieve some goal or to facilitate an activity. This presentation will focus on three main issues: Measures, a new approach to sectorization problems and an application in waste collection. When designing or comparing sectors different characteristics are usually taken into account. Some are commonly used, and they are related to the concepts of contiguity, equilibrium and compactness. These fundamental characteristics will be addressed, by defining new generic measures and by proposing a new measure, desirability, connected with the idea of preference. A new approach to sectorization inspired in Coulomb’s Law, which establishes a relation of force between electrically charged points, will be proposed. A charged point represents a small region with specific characteristics/values creating relations of attraction/repulsion with the others (two by two), proportional to the charges and inversely proportional to their distance. Finally, a real case about sectorization and vehicle routing in solid waste collection will be mentioned.
