During the past 15 years, a number of initiatives have been undertaken at national level to develop ocean forecasting systems operating at regional and/or global scales. The co-ordination between these efforts has been organized internationally through the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE). The French MERCATOR project is one of the leading participants in GODAE. The MERCATOR systems routinely assimilate a variety of observations such as multi-satellite altimeter data, sea-surface temperature and in situ temperature and salinity profiles, focusing on high-resolution scales of the ocean dynamics. The assimilation strategy in MERCATOR is based on a hierarchy of methods of increasing sophistication including optimal interpolation, Kalman filtering and variational methods, which are progressively deployed through the Syst`eme d’Assimilation MERCATOR (SAM) series. SAM-1 is based on a reduced-order optimal interpolation which can be operated using ‘altimetry-only’ or ‘multi-data’ set-ups; it relies on the concept of separability, assuming that the correlations can be separated into a product of horizontal and vertical contributions. The second release, SAM-2, is being developed to include new features from the singular evolutive extended Kalman (SEEK) filter, such as three-dimensional, multivariate error modes and adaptivity schemes. The third one, SAM-3, considers variational methods such as the incremental four-dimensional variational algorithm. Most operational forecasting systems evaluated during GODAE are based on least-squares statistical estimation assuming Gaussian errors. In the framework of the EU MERSEA (Marine EnviRonment and Security for the European Area) project, research is being conducted to prepare the next-generation operational ocean monitoring and forecasting systems. The research effort will explore nonlinear assimilation formulations to overcome limitations of the current systems. This paper provides an overview of the developments conducted in MERSEA with the SEEK filter, the Ensemble Kalman filter and the sequential importance re-sampling filter.

The robustness of state feedback solutions to the problem of partial pole placement obtained by a new projection procedure is examined. The projection procedure gives a reduced-order pole assignment problem. It is shown that the sensitivities of the assigned poles in the complete closed-loop system are bounded in terms of the sensitivities of the assigned reduced-order poles, and the sensitivities of the unaltered poles are bounded in terms of the sensitivities of the corresponding open-loop poles. If the assigned poles are well-separated from the unaltered poles, these bounds are expected to be tight. The projection procedure is described in [3], and techniques for finding robust (or insensitive) solutions to the reduced-order problem are given in [1], [2].

Stochastic methods are a crucial area in contemporary climate research and are increasingly being used in comprehensive weather and climate prediction models as well as reduced order climate models. Stochastic methods are used as subgrid-scale parameterizations (SSPs) as well as for model error representation, uncertainty quantification, data assimilation, and ensemble prediction. The need to use stochastic approaches in weather and climate models arises because we still cannot resolve all necessary processes and scales in comprehensive numerical weather and climate prediction models. In many practical applications one is mainly interested in the largest and potentially predictable scales and not necessarily in the small and fast scales. For instance, reduced order models can simulate and predict large-scale modes. Statistical mechanics and dynamical systems theory suggest that in reduced order models the impact of unresolved degrees of freedom can be represented by suitable combinations of deterministic and stochastic components and non-Markovian (memory) terms. Stochastic approaches in numerical weather and climate prediction models also lead to the reduction of model biases. Hence, there is a clear need for systematic stochastic approaches in weather and climate modeling. In this review, we present evidence for stochastic effects in laboratory experiments. Then we provide an overview of stochastic climate theory from an applied mathematics perspective. We also survey the current use of stochastic methods in comprehensive weather and climate prediction models and show that stochastic parameterizations have the potential to remedy many of the current biases in these comprehensive models.

This paper addresses the problem of model reduction for uncertain discrete-time systems with convex bounded (polytope type) uncertainty. A reduced order precisely known model is obtained in such a way that the H2 and/or the H∞ guaranteed norm of the error between the original (uncertain) system and the reduced one is minimized. The optimization problems are formulated in terms of coupled (non-convex) LMIs - Linear Matrix Inequalities, being solved through iterative algorithms. Examples illustrate the results.

O objetivo principal desta dissertação é apresentar uma solução eficiente, prática e de simples implementação para um problema recorrente em projetos de controladores robustos multivariáveis do tipo LQG/LTR: a elevada ordem que estes controladores podem obter dependendo das complicações apresentadas pelo sistema dificultando para que este possa ser controlado de maneira satisfatória. Para que esta meta seja alcançada, é apresentada uma técnica de redução do modelo de sistemas com metodologia bastante descomplicada, dispensando qualquer necessidade de complexas programações para a sua utilização. Esta metodologia porém, é somente aplicável a uma classe bastante específica de sistema. Em suma, o sistema deve possuir variáveis de estado desacopladas do restante do sistema, ou seja, variáveis que não sofram influências de outras e que também não provoquem grande efeito nas saídas do sistema. Foi escolhido um sistema multivariável de sexta ordem, com duas entradas e duas saídas para que a técnica de redução de ordem de modelo seja testada. Este sistema possui as características especiais mencionadas anteriormente bem como exige o projeto de compensador dinâmico e a adição de integradores às suas saídas para que seja controlado adequadamente. Este trabalho pretende apresentar o procedimento de todo o projeto mencionado, desde a obtenção de um modelo de ordem reduzida até a implementação do controlador LQG/LTR. Em seguida, o controlador obtido é testado através de diversas simulações e os resultados encontrados são discutidos para a avaliação da eficácia e da praticidade do método proposto para obtenção de controladores de ordem reduzida.

Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Bestimmung der Spinpolarisation von der Heusler-Verbindung Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al. Dieses Ziel wurde durch die sorgfältige Präparation von Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al basierten Tunnelkontakten realisiert. Tunnelwiderstandsmessungen an Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al-basiertenrnTunnelkontakten ergaben einen Tunnelmagnetowiderstand von 101% bei 4 K. DieserrnTunnelmagnetowiderstand legt eine untere Grenze von 67% für die Spinpolarisation von Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al fest.rnrnCo2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al ist eine Heusler-Verbindung, der die Eigenschaften eines halbmetallischen Ferromagneten zugeschrieben werden. Ein halbmetallischer Ferromagnet hat an der Fermikante nur Elektronenspinzustände mit einer Polarisation. Als Folge davon können bei einem spinerhaltenden Tunnelprozess nur Elektronen einer Spinrichtung in den halbmetallischen Ferromagneten tunneln. Mit einem magnetischen Feld und einer durch einen Antiferromagneten fixierten Gegenelektrode, können an einem Tunnelkontakt mit einem spinpolarisierten Ferromagneten deshalb zwei Zustände, eine hohe und eine niedrige Tunnelleitfähigkeit, erzeugt werden. Daher finden spinpolarisierte Tunnelkontakte in Form von MRAM in der Datenspeicherung Verwendung. Bislang wurde jedoch keine Verbindung gefunden, der eine Spinpolarisation von 100% experimentell eindeutig nachgewiesen werden konnte. Für Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al lagen die höchsten gemessenen Spinpolarisationen um 50%.rnrnTunnelspektroskopie ist eine zuverlässige und anwendungsnahe Methode zur Untersuchung der Spinpolarisation. Inelastische Tunnelprozesse und eine reduzierte Ordnung an Grenzflächen bewirken einen reduzierten Tunnelmagnetowiderstand. Eine symmetriebrechende Barriere, wie amorphes AlOx, ist Voraussetzung für die Anwendung des Jullière-Modells zur Bestimmung der Spinpolarisation. Das Jullière-Modell verknüpft die Spin-aufgespaltenenrnZustandsdichten der Elektroden mit dem Tunnelmagnetowiderstand. Ohne einernsymmetriebrechende Barriere, zum Beispiel mit MgO als Isolatorschicht, können höhere Tunnelmagnetowiderstände erzwungen werden. Ein eindeutiger Rückschluss auf die Spinpolarisation ist dann jedoch nicht mehr möglich. Mit Aluminiumoxid-basierten Barrieren liefert die Anwendung des einfachen Jullière-Modells eine Untergrenze der Spinpolarisation.rnrnUm die Spinpolarisation von Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al durch Tunnelspektroskopie zu bestimmen, musste die Präparation der Tunnelkontakte verbessert werden. Dies wurde ermöglicht durch den Anbau einer neuen Sputterkammer mit besseren UHV-Bedingungen an ein bestehendes Präparationscluster. Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al wird mit Hilfe von Radiofrequenz-Kathodenzerstäuben deponiert. Die resultierenden Schichten verfügen nach ihrer Deposition über einen höheren Ordnungsgrad und über eine geordnete Oberfläche. Durch eine Magnesium-Pufferschicht war es möglich, auf diese Oberfläche eine homogene amorphe AlOx-Barriere zu deponieren. Als Gegenelektrode wurde CoFe als Ferromagnet mit MnFe als Antiferromagnet gewählt. Diese Gegenelektrode ermöglicht Tunnelmessungen bis hin zu Raumtemperatur.rnrnMit den in dieser Arbeit vorgestellten optimierten Analyse- und Präparationsmethoden ist es möglich, die Untergrenze der Spinpolarisation von Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al auf 67% anzuheben. Dies ist der bisher höchste veröffentlichte Wert der Spinpolarisation von Co2Cr0,6Fe0,4Al.rn

The primary goal of this project is to demonstrate the practical use of data mining algorithms to cluster a solved steady-state computational fluids simulation (CFD) flow domain into a simplified lumped-parameter network. A commercial-quality code, “cfdMine” was created using a volume-weighted k-means clustering that that can accomplish the clustering of a 20 million cell CFD domain on a single CPU in several hours or less. Additionally agglomeration and k-means Mahalanobis were added as optional post-processing steps to further enhance the separation of the clusters. The resultant nodal network is considered a reduced-order model and can be solved transiently at a very minimal computational cost. The reduced order network is then instantiated in the commercial thermal solver MuSES to perform transient conjugate heat transfer using convection predicted using a lumped network (based on steady-state CFD). When inserting the lumped nodal network into a MuSES model, the potential for developing a “localized heat transfer coefficient” is shown to be an improvement over existing techniques. Also, it was found that the use of the clustering created a new flow visualization technique. Finally, fixing clusters near equipment newly demonstrates a capability to track temperatures near specific objects (such as equipment in vehicles).

Se desarrollan varias técnicas basadas en descomposición ortogonal propia (DOP) local y proyección de tipo Galerkin para acelerar la integración numérica de problemas de evolución, de tipo parabólico, no lineales. Las ideas y métodos que se presentan conllevan un nuevo enfoque para la modelización de tipo DOP, que combina intervalos temporales cortos en que se usa un esquema numérico estándard con otros intervalos temporales en que se utilizan los sistemas de tipo Galerkin que resultan de proyectar las ecuaciones de evolución sobre la variedad lineal generada por los modos DOP, obtenidos a partir de instantáneas calculadas en los intervalos donde actúa el código numérico. La variedad DOP se construye completamente en el primer intervalo, pero solamente se actualiza en los demás intervalos según las dinámicas de la solución, aumentando de este modo la eficiencia del modelo de orden reducido resultante. Además, se aprovechan algunas propiedades asociadas a la dependencia débil de los modos DOP tanto en la variable temporal como en los posibles parámetros de que pueda depender el problema. De esta forma, se aumentan la flexibilidad y la eficiencia computacional del proceso. La aplicación de los métodos resultantes es muy prometedora, tanto en la simulación de transitorios en flujos laminares como en la construcción de diagramas de bifurcación en sistemas dependientes de parámetros. Las ideas y los algoritmos desarrollados en la tesis se ilustran en dos problemas test, la ecuación unidimensional compleja de Ginzburg-Landau y el problema bidimensional no estacionario de la cavidad. Abstract Various ideas and methods involving local proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and Galerkin projection are presented aiming at accelerating the numerical integration of nonlinear time dependent parabolic problems. The proposed methods come from a new approach to the POD-based model reduction procedures, which combines short runs with a given numerical solver and a reduced order model constructed by expanding the solution of the problem into appropriate POD modes, which span a POD manifold, and Galerkin projecting some evolution equations onto that linear manifold. The POD manifold is completely constructed from the outset, but only updated as time proceeds according to the dynamics, which yields an adaptive and flexible procedure. In addition, some properties concerning the weak dependence of the POD modes on time and possible parameters in the problem are exploited in order to increase the flexibility and efficiency of the low dimensional model computation. Application of the developed techniques to the approximation of transients in laminar fluid flows and the simulation of attractors in bifurcation problems shows very promising results. The test problems considered to illustrate the various ideas and check the performance of the algorithms are the onedimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation and the two-dimensional unsteady liddriven cavity problem.

El objetivo principal de esta tesis es el desarrollo de herramientas numéricas basadas en técnicas de onda completa para el diseño asistido por ordenador (Computer-Aided Design,‘CAD’) de dispositivos de microondas. En este contexto, se desarrolla una herramienta numérica basada en el método de los elementos finitos para el diseño y análisis de antenas impresas mediante algoritmos de optimización. Esta técnica consiste en dividir el análisis de una antena en dos partes. Una parte de análisis 3D que se realiza sólo una vez en cada punto de frecuencia de la banda de funcionamiento donde se sustituye una superficie que contiene la metalización del parche por puertas artificiales. En una segunda parte se inserta entre las puertas artificiales en la estructura 3D la superficie soportando una metalización y se procede un análisis 2D para caracterizar el comportamiento de la antena. La técnica propuesta en esta tesis se puede implementar en un algoritmo de optimización para definir el perfil de la antena que permite conseguir los objetivos del diseño. Se valida experimentalmente dicha técnica empleándola en el diseño de antenas impresas de banda ancha para diferentes aplicaciones mediante la optimización del perfil de los parches. También, se desarrolla en esta tesis un procedimiento basado en el método de descomposición de dominio y el método de los elementos finitos para el diseño de dispositivos pasivos de microonda. Se utiliza este procedimiento en particular para el diseño y sintonía de filtros de microondas. En la primera etapa de su aplicación se divide la estructura que se quiere analizar en subdominios aplicando el método de descomposición de dominio, este proceso permite analizar cada segmento por separado utilizando el método de análisis adecuado dado que suele haber subdominios que se pueden analizar mediante métodos analíticos por lo que el tiempo de análisis es más reducido. Se utilizan métodos numéricos para analizar los subdominios que no se pueden analizar mediante métodos analíticos. En esta tesis, se utiliza el método de los elementos finitos para llevar a cabo el análisis. Además de la descomposición de dominio, se aplica un proceso de barrido en frecuencia para reducir los tiempos del análisis. Como método de orden reducido se utiliza la técnica de bases reducidas. Se ha utilizado este procedimiento para diseñar y sintonizar varios ejemplos de filtros con el fin de comprobar la validez de dicho procedimiento. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la utilidad de este procedimiento y confirman su rigurosidad, precisión y eficiencia en el diseño de filtros de microondas. ABSTRACT The main objective of this thesis is the development of numerical tools based on full-wave techniques for computer-aided design ‘CAD’ of microwave devices. In this context, a numerical technique based on the finite element method ‘FEM’ for the design and analysis of printed antennas using optimization algorithms has been developed. The proposed technique consists in dividing the analysis of the antenna in two stages. In the first stage, the regions of the antenna which do not need to be modified during the CAD process are initially characterized only once from their corresponding matrix transfer function (Generalized Admittance matrix, ‘GAM’). The regions which will be modified are defined as artificial ports, precisely the regions which will contain the conducting surfaces of the printed antenna. In a second stage, the contour shape of the conducting surfaces of the printed antenna is iteratively modified in order to achieve a desired electromagnetic performance of the antenna. In this way, a new GAM of the radiating device which takes into account each printed antenna shape is computed after each iteration. The proposed technique can be implemented with a genetic algorithm to achieve the design objectives. This technique is validated experimentally and applied to the design of wideband printed antennas for different applications by optimizing the shape of the radiating device. In addition, a procedure based on the domain decomposition method and the finite element method has been developed for the design of microwave passive devices. In particular, this procedure can be applied to the design and tune of microwave filters. In the first stage of its implementation, the structure to be analyzed is divided into subdomains using the domain decomposition method; this process allows each subdomains can be analyzed separately using suitable analysis method, since there is usually subdomains that can be analyzed by analytical methods so that the time of analysis is reduced. For analyzing the subdomains that cannot be analyzed by analytical methods, we use the numerical methods. In this thesis, the FEM is used to carry out the analysis. Furthermore the decomposition of the domain, a frequency sweep process is applied to reduce analysis times. The reduced order model as the reduced basis technique is used in this procedure. This procedure is applied to the design and tune of several examples of microwave filters in order to check its validity. The obtained results allow concluding the usefulness of this procedure and confirming their thoroughness, accuracy and efficiency for the design of microwave filters.

Es bien conocido que las pequeñas imperfecciones existentes en los álabes de un rótor de turbomaquinaria (conocidas como “mistuning”) pueden causar un aumento considerable de la amplitud de vibración de la respuesta forzada y, por el contrario, tienen típicamente un efecto beneficioso en el flameo del rótor. Para entender estos efectos se pueden llevar a cabo estudios numéricos del problema aeroelástico completo. Sin embargo, el cálculo de “mistuning” usando modelos de alta resolución es una tarea difícil de realizar, ya que los modelos necesarios para describir de manera precisa el componente de turbomáquina (por ejemplo rotor) tienen, necesariamente, un número muy elevado de grados de libertad, y, además, es necesario hacer un estudio estadístico para poder explorar apropiadamente las distribuciones posibles de “mistuning”, que tienen una naturaleza aleatoria. Diferentes modelos de orden reducido han sido desarrollados en los últimos años para superar este inconveniente. Uno de estos modelos, llamado “Asymptotic Mistuning Model (AMM)”, se deriva de la formulación completa usando técnicas de perturbaciones que se basan en que el “mistuning” es pequeño. El AMM retiene sólo los modos relevantes para describir el efecto del mistuning, y permite identificar los mecanismos clave involucrados en la amplificación de la respuesta forzada y en la estabilización del flameo. En este trabajo, el AMM se usa para estudiar el efecto del “mistuning” de la estructura y de la amortiguación sobre la amplitud de la respuesta forzada. Los resultados obtenidos son validados usando modelos simplificados del rotor y también otros de alta definición. Además, en el marco del proyecto europeo FP7 "Flutter-Free Turbomachinery Blades (FUTURE)", el AMM se aplica para diseñar distribuciones de “mistuning” intencional: (i) una que anula y (ii) otra que reduce a la mitad la amplitud del flameo de un rotor inestable; y las distribuciones obtenidas se validan experimentalmente. Por último, la capacidad de AMM para predecir el comportamiento de flameo de rotores con “mistuning” se comprueba usando resultados de CFD detallados. Abstract It is well known that the small imperfections of the individual blades in a turbomachinery rotor (known as “mistuning”) can cause a substantial increase of the forced response vibration amplitude, and it also typically results in an improvement of the flutter vibration characteristics of the rotor. The understanding of these phenomena can be attempted just by performing numerical simulations of the complete aeroelastic problem. However, the computation of mistuning cases using high fidelity models is a formidable task, because a detailed model of the whole rotor has to be considered, and a statistical study has to be carried out in order to properly explore the effect of the random mistuning distributions. Many reduced order models have been developed in recent years to overcome this barrier. One of these models, called the Asymptotic Mistuning Model (AMM), is systematically derived from the complete bladed disk formulation using a consistent perturbative procedure that exploits the smallness of mistuning to simplify the problem. The AMM retains only the essential system modes that are involved in the mistuning effect, and it allows to identify the key mechanisms of the amplification of the forced response amplitude and the flutter stabilization. In this work, AMM methodolgy is used to study the effect of structural and damping mistuning on the forced response vibration amplitude. The obtained results are verified using a one degree of freedom model of a rotor, and also high fidelity models of the complete rotor. The AMM is also applied, in the frame of the European FP7 project “Flutter-Free Turbomachinery Blades (FUTURE)”, to design two intentional mistuning patterns: (i) one to complete stabilize an unstable rotor, and (ii) other to approximately reduce by half its flutter amplitude. The designed patterns are validated experimentally. Finally, the ability of AMM to predict the flutter behavior of mistuned rotors is checked against numerical, high fidelity CFD results.

This paper addresses advanced control of a biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge process. Based on a previously validated distributed parameter model of the BNR activated sludge process, we present robust multivariable controller designs for the process, involving loop shaping of plant model, robust stability and performance analyses. Results from three design case studies showed that a multivariable controller with stability margins of 0.163, 0.492 and 1.062 measured by the normalised coprime factor, multiplicative and additive uncertainties respectively give the best results for meeting performance robustness specifications. The controller robustly stabilises effluent nutrients in the presence of uncertainties with the behaviour of phosphorus accumulating organisms as well as to effectively attenuate major disturbances introduced as step changes. This study also shows that, performance of the multivariable robust controller is superior to multi-loops SISO PI controllers for regulating the BNR activated sludge process in terms of robust stability and performance and controlling the process using inlet feed flowrate is infeasible. Liquid-liquid extraction has long been known as a unit operation that plays an important role in industry. This process is well known for its complexity and sensitivity to operation conditions. This thesis presents an attempt to explore the dynamics and control of this process using a systematic approach and state of the art control system design techniques. The process was studied first experimentally under carefully selected. operation conditions, which resembles the ranges employed practically under stable and efficient conditions. Data were collected at steady state conditions using adequate sampling techniques for the dispersed and continuous phases as well as during the transients of the column with the aid of a computer-based online data logging system and online concentration analysis. A stagewise single stage backflow model was improved to mimic the dynamic operation of the column. The developed model accounts for the variation in hydrodynamics, mass transfer, and physical properties throughout the length of the column. End effects were treated by addition of stages at the column entrances. Two parameters were incorporated in the model namely; mass transfer weight factor to correct for the assumption of no mass transfer in the. settling zones at each stage and the backmixing coefficients to handle the axial dispersion phenomena encountered in the course of column operation. The parameters were estimated by minimizing the differences between the experimental and the model predicted concentration profiles at steady state conditions using non-linear optimisation technique. The estimated values were then correlated as functions of operating parameters and were incorporated in·the model equations. The model equations comprise a stiff differential~algebraic system. This system was solved using the GEAR ODE solver. The calculated concentration profiles were compared to those experimentally measured. A very good agreement of the two profiles was achieved within a percent relative error of ±2.S%. The developed rigorous dynamic model of the extraction column was used to derive linear time-invariant reduced-order models that relate the input variables (agitator speed, solvent feed flowrate and concentration, feed concentration and flowrate) to the output variables (raffinate concentration and extract concentration) using the asymptotic method of system identification. The reduced-order models were shown to be accurate in capturing the dynamic behaviour of the process with a maximum modelling prediction error of I %. The simplicity and accuracy of the derived reduced-order models allow for control system design and analysis of such complicated processes. The extraction column is a typical multivariable process with agitator speed and solvent feed flowrate considered as manipulative variables; raffinate concentration and extract concentration as controlled variables and the feeds concentration and feed flowrate as disturbance variables. The control system design of the extraction process was tackled as multi-loop decentralised SISO (Single Input Single Output) as well as centralised MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) system using both conventional and model-based control techniques such as IMC (Internal Model Control) and MPC (Model Predictive Control). Control performance of each control scheme was. studied in terms of stability, speed of response, sensitivity to modelling errors (robustness), setpoint tracking capabilities and load rejection. For decentralised control, multiple loops were assigned to pair.each manipulated variable with each controlled variable according to the interaction analysis and other pairing criteria such as relative gain array (RGA), singular value analysis (SVD). Loops namely Rotor speed-Raffinate concentration and Solvent flowrate Extract concentration showed weak interaction. Multivariable MPC has shown more effective performance compared to other conventional techniques since it accounts for loops interaction, time delays, and input-output variables constraints.
