In this paper, a novel approach for exploiting multitemporal remote sensing data focused on real-time monitoring of agricultural crops is presented. The methodology is defined in a dynamical system context using state-space techniques, which enables the possibility of merging past temporal information with an update for each new acquisition. The dynamic system context allows us to exploit classical tools in this domain to perform the estimation of relevant variables. A general methodology is proposed, and a particular instance is defined in this study based on polarimetric radar data to track the phenological stages of a set of crops. A model generation from empirical data through principal component analysis is presented, and an extended Kalman filter is adapted to perform phenological stage estimation. Results employing quad-pol Radarsat-2 data over three different cereals are analyzed. The potential of this methodology to retrieve vegetation variables in real time is shown.

Deep hole drilling is one of the most complicated metal cutting processes and one of the most difficult to perform on CNC machine-tools or machining centres under conditions of limited manpower or unmanned operation. This research work investigates aspects of the deep hole drilling process with small diameter twist drills and presents a prototype system for real time process monitoring and adaptive control; two main research objectives are fulfilled in particular : First objective is the experimental investigation of the mechanics of the deep hole drilling process, using twist drills without internal coolant supply, in the range of diarneters Ø 2.4 to Ø4.5 mm and working length up to 40 diameters. The definition of the problems associated with the low strength of these tools and the study of mechanisms of catastrophic failure which manifest themselves well before and along with the classic mechanism of tool wear. The relationships between drilling thrust and torque with the depth of penetration and the various machining conditions are also investigated and the experimental evidence suggests that the process is inherently unstable at depths beyond a few diameters. Second objective is the design and implementation of a system for intelligent CNC deep hole drilling, the main task of which is to ensure integrity of the process and the safety of the tool and the workpiece. This task is achieved by means of interfacing the CNC system of the machine tool to an external computer which performs the following functions: On-line monitoring of the drilling thrust and torque, adaptive control of feed rate, spindle speed and tool penetration (Z-axis), indirect monitoring of tool wear by pattern recognition of variations of the drilling thrust with cumulative cutting time and drilled depth, operation as a data base for tools and workpieces and finally issuing of alarms and diagnostic messages.

Nowadays, there is an increasing interest in wireless sensor networks (WSN) for environmental monitoring systems because it can be used to improve the quality of life and living conditions are becoming a major concern to people. This paper describes the design and development of a real time monitoring system based on ZigBee WSN characterized by a lower energy consumption, low cost, reduced dimensions and fast adaptation to the network tree topology. The developed system encompasses an optimized sensing process about environmental parameters, low rate transmission from sensor nodes to the gateway, packet parsing and data storing in a remote database and real time visualization through a web server.

This thesis studies the state-of-the-art of phasor measurement units (PMUs) as well as their metrological requirements stated in the IEEE C37.118.1 and C37.118.2 Standards for guaranteeing correct measurement performances. Communication systems among PMUs and their possible applicability in the field of power quality (PQ) assessment are also investigated. This preliminary study is followed by an analysis of the working principle of real-time (RT) simulators and the importance of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) implementation, examining the possible case studies specific for PMUs, including compliance tests which are one of the most important parts. The core of the thesis is focused on the implementation of a PMU model in the IEEE 5-bus network in Simulink and in the validation of the results using OPAL RT-4510 as a real-time simulator. An initial check allows one to get an idea about the goodness of the results in Simulink, comparing the PMU data with respect to the load-flow steady-state information. In this part, accuracy indices are also calculated for both voltage and current synchrophasors. The following part consists in the implementation of the same code in OPAL-RT 4510 simulator, after which an initial analysis is carried out in a qualitative way in order to get a sense of the goodness of the outcomes. Finally, the confirmation of the results is based on an examination of the attained voltage and current synchrophasors and accuracy indices coming from Simulink models and from OPAL system, using a Matlab script. This work also proposes suggestions for an upcoming operation of PMUs in a more complex system as the Digital Twin (DT) in order to improve the performances of the already-existing protection devices of the distribution system operator (DSO) for a future enhancement of power systems reliability.

Real-time monitoring applications may be used in a wireless sensor network (WSN) and may generate packet flows with strict quality of service requirements in terms of delay, jitter, or packet loss. When strict delays are imposed from source to destination, the packets must be delivered at the destination within an end-to-end delay (EED) hard limit in order to be considered useful. Since the WSN nodes are scarce both in processing and energy resources, it is desirable that they only transport useful data, as this contributes to enhance the overall network performance and to improve energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-layer admission control (CLAC) mechanism to enhance the network performance and increase energy efficiency of a WSN, by avoiding the transmission of potentially useless packets. The CLAC mechanism uses an estimation technique to preview packets EED, and decides to forward a packet only if it is expected to meet the EED deadline defined by the application, dropping it otherwise. The results obtained show that CLAC enhances the network performance by increasing the useful packet delivery ratio in high network loads and improves the energy efficiency in every network load.

Plants propagate electrical signals in response to artificial wounding. However, little is known about the electrophysiological responses of the phloem to wounding, and whether natural damaging stimuli induce propagating electrical signals in this tissue. Here, we used living aphids and the direct current (DC) version of the electrical penetration graph (EPG) to detect changes in the membrane potential of Arabidopsis sieve elements (SEs) during caterpillar wounding. Feeding wounds in the lamina induced fast depolarization waves in the affected leaf, rising to maximum amplitude (c. 60 mV) within 2 s. Major damage to the midvein induced fast and slow depolarization waves in unwounded neighbor leaves, but only slow depolarization waves in non-neighbor leaves. The slow depolarization waves rose to maximum amplitude (c. 30 mV) within 14 s. Expression of a jasmonate-responsive gene was detected in leaves in which SEs displayed fast depolarization waves. No electrical signals were detected in SEs of unwounded neighbor leaves of plants with suppressed expression of GLR3.3 and GLR3.6. EPG applied as a novel approach to plant electrophysiology allows cell-specific, robust, real-time monitoring of early electrophysiological responses in plant cells to damage, and is potentially applicable to a broad range of plant-herbivore interactions.

The real-time monitoring of events in an industrial plant is vital, to monitor the actual conditions of operation of the machinery responsible for the manufacturing process. A predictive maintenance program includes condition monitoring of the rotating machinery, to anticipate possible conditions of failure. To increase the operational reliability it is thus necessary an efficient tool to analyze and monitor the equipments, in real-time, and enabling the detection of e.g. incipient faults in bearings. To fulfill these requirements some innovations have become frequent, namely the inclusion of vibration sensors or stator current sensors. These innovations enable the development of new design methodologies that take into account the ease of future modifications, upgrades, and replacement of the monitored machine, as well as expansion of the monitoring system. This paper presents the development, implementation and testing of an instrument for vibration monitoring, as a possible solution to embed in industrial environment. The digital control system is based on an FPGA, and its configuration with an open hardware design tool is described. Special focus is given to the area of fault detection in rolling bearings. © 2012 IEEE.

Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) was used to monitor the mass changes on a quartz crystal surface containing immobilized lectins that interacted with carbohydrates. The strategy for lectin immobilization was developed on the basis of a multilayer system composed of Au-cystamine-glutaraldehyde-lectin. Each step of the immobilization procedure was confirmed by FTIR analysis. The system was used to study the interactions of Concanavalin A (ConA) with maltose and Jacalin with Fetuin. The real-time binding of different concentrations of carbohydrate to the immobilized lectin was monitored by means of QCM measurements and the data obtained allowed for the construction of Langmuir isotherm curves. The association constants determined for the specific interactions analyzed here were (6.4 +/- 0.2) X 10(4) M-1 for Jacalin-Fetuin and (4.5 +/- 0.1) x 10(2) M-1 for ConA-maltose. These results indicate that the QCM constitutes a suitable method for the analysis of lectin-carbohydrate interactions, even when assaying low molecular mass ligands such as disaccharides. Os serviços baseados em localização vieram dar um novo alento à criatividade dos programadores de aplicações móveis. A vulgarização de dispositivos com capacidades de localização integradas deu origem ao desenvolvimento de aplicações que gerem e apresentam informação baseada na posição do utilizador. Desde então, o mercado móvel tem assistido ao aparecimento de novas categorias de aplicações que tiram proveito desta capacidade. Entre elas, destaca-se a monitorização remota de dispositivos, que tem vindo a assumir uma importância crescente, tanto no sector particular como no sector empresarial. Esta dissertação começa por apresentar o estado da arte sobre os diferentes sistemas de posicionamento, categorizados pela sua eficácia em ambientes internos ou externos, assim como diferentes protocolos de comunicação em tempo quase-real. É também feita uma análise ao estado actual do mercado móvel. Actualmente o mercado possui diferentes plataformas móveis com características únicas que as fazem rivalizar entre si, com vista a expandirem a sua quota de mercado. É por isso elaborado um breve estudo sobre os sistemas operativos móveis mais relevantes da actualidade. É igualmente feita uma abordagem mais profunda à arquitectura da plataforma móvel da Apple - o iOS – que serviu de base ao desenvolvimento de uma solução optimizada para localização e monitorização de dispositivos móveis. A monitorização implica uma utilização intensiva de recursos energéticos e de largura de banda que os dispositivos móveis da actualidade não estão aptos a suportar. Dado o grande consumo energético do GPS face à precária autonomia destes dispositivos, é apresentado um estudo em que se expõem soluções que permitem gerir de forma optimizada a utilização do GPS. O elevado custo dos planos de dados facultados pelas operadoras móveis é também considerado, pelo que são exploradas soluções que visam minimizar a utilização de largura de banda. Deste trabalho, nasce a aplicação EyeGotcha, que para além de permitir localizar outros utilizadores de dispositivos móveis de forma optimizada, permite também monitorizar as suas acções baseando-se num conjunto de regras pré-definidas. Estas acções são reportadas às entidades monitoras, de modo automatizado e sob a forma de alertas. Visionando-se a comercialização da aplicação, é portanto apresentado um modelo de negócio que permite obter receitas capazes de cobrirem os custos de manutenção de serviços, aos quais o funcionamento da aplicação móvel está subjugado.

Embedded systems are increasingly complex and dynamic, imposing progressively higher developing time and costs. Tuning a particular system for deployment is thus becoming more demanding. Furthermore when considering systems which have to adapt themselves to evolving requirements and changing service requests. In this perspective, run-time monitoring of the system behaviour becomes an important requirement, allowing to dynamically capturing the actual scheduling progress and resource utilization. For this to succeed, operating systems need to expose their internal behaviour and state, making it available to external applications, and a runtime monitoring mechanism must be available. However, such mechanism can impose a burden in the system itself if not wisely used. In this paper we explore this problem and propose a framework, which is intended to provide this run-time mechanism whilst achieving code separation, run-time efficiency and flexibility for the final developer.

Monitoring is a very important aspect to consider when developing real-time systems. However, it is also important to consider the impact of the monitoring mechanisms in the actual application. The use of Reflection can provide a clear separation between the real-time application and the implemented monitoring mechanisms, which can be introduced (reflected) into the underlying system without changing the actual application part of the code. Nevertheless, controlling the monitoring system itself is still a topic of research. The monitoring mechanisms must contain knowledge about “how to get the information out”. Therefore, this paper presents the ongoing work to define a suitable strategy for monitoring real-time systems through the use of Reflection.
