This article recovers and contextualizes the politics of British punk fanzines produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It argues that fanzines – and youth cultures more generally – provide a contested cultural space for young people to express their ideas, opinions and anxieties. Simultaneously, it maintains that punk fanzines offer the historian a portal into a period of significant socio-economic, political and cultural change. As well as presenting alternative cultural narratives to the formulaic accounts of punk and popular music now common in the mainstream media, fanzines allow us a glimpse of the often radical ideas held by a youthful milieu rarely given expression in the political arena.

‘White Youth’ recovers and explains the relationship between far-right organisations and British youth culture in the period between 1977 and 1987. In particular, it concentrates on the cultural spaces opened up by punk and the attempts made by the National Front and British Movement to claim them as conduits for racist and/or ultra-nationalist politics. The article is built on an empirical basis, using archival material and a historical methodology chosen to develop a history ‘from below’ that takes due consideration of the socio-economic and political forces that inform its wider context. Its focus is designed to map shifting cultural and political influences across the far right, assessing the extent to which extremist organisations proved able to adopt or utilise youth cultural practice as a means of recruitment and communication. Today the British far right is in political and organisational disarray. Nonetheless, residues tied to the cultural initiatives devised in the 1970s–80s remain, be they stylistic, nostalgic or points of connection forged to connect a transnational music scene.

The Riot Grrrl movement started in mid-90s and it consists of girls who use rock as a tool of feminist political struggle. Besides using music as a central element of political identity, this movement is also characterized by the formation of an alternative public sphere (formed by fanzines, blogs and e-zines) that functions both as a way to spread their music and as identification trigger mechanism in relation to their political causes. The aim of this article is to study the instruments that these feminists bands - that deviate from the traditional feminist political movements - use to create identification with their audience, especially from an empirical research of e-zines published by these bands and from the communicative action of their leaders in social networks. It is possible to note that, despite other identification mechanisms, testimonies works as a socialization link which marks the alternative public sphere composed by publications made by Riot Grrrls. The testimony serves as a powerful arranger of collective identities, since it is presupposed in the recognition of a world in common, allocating identity as performative action.

Il presente elaborato ha lo scopo di fornire una panoramica sul movimento punk siberiano, nato e sviluppatosi a cavallo fra il 1984 e il 1991. L'analisi della poetica di alcuni fra i musicisti principali del cosiddetto "sibpunk" e la traduzione delle loro canzoni più significative costituiscono una prospettiva inusuale e interessante per osservare la Siberia negli anni della Perestrojka.

Music has a powerful indexical ability to evoke particular times and places. Such an ability has been exploited at length by the often-elaborate soundscapes of period films, which regularly utilise incidental scores and featured period songs to help root their narrative action in past times, and to immerse their audiences in the sensibilities of a different age. However, this article will begin to examine the ways in which period film soundtracks can also be used to complicate a narrative sense of time and place through the use of ‘musical anachronism’: music conspicuously ‘out of time’ with the temporality depicted on screen. Through the analysis of a sequence from the film W.E. (Madonna, 2011) and the consideration of existing critical and conceptual contexts, this article will explore how anachronistic soundtracks can function beyond ‘postmodern novelty’ or ‘nuisance’ to historical verisimilitude, instead offering alternative modes of engagement with story and history.

Punk subculture is often assumed to have an antagonistic disposition towards religion. In this thesis, I examine this relationship in the Indonesian context, where the level of religious devotion is higher than in Western societies. I concentrate on how Indonesian punks who belong to secular punk communities negotiate the relationship between their religious or non-religious and subcultural identities. In addition, I examine the status of religion on the collective level in the punk communities. I collected the ethnographic data on Java in 2012. In addition to semi-structured interviews and participant observation, the analyzed data consists of social media sites, punk records and an online enquiry. I utilized thematic analysis in the study. The notion of identity is understood the way Stuart Hall has conceptualized it. Another essential concept, affect, is derived from Lawrence Grossberg’s theorization. The religious participants separated punk and religion in their lives. Many Muslim informants used an Islamic typology to separate one’s personal relationship with Allah and one’s relationship with other people. While some participants filtered away certain elements of “Western punk”, the majority of them saw ideological similarities between punk and Islam. This relationship was negotiated using both affective and ideological rationalizations. Non-religious punks respected religious people, but criticized radical forms of religiosity. Some of them described the difficulties of maintaining a non-religious identity in Indonesia, and that they have felt less marginalized in the punk community. Almost all of the participants stated that punk scenes should be religiously neutral and viewed integrating punk and religion as a problematic phenomenon.

Au début des années 80, deux secousses touchent la Suisse avec d'un côté l'explosion du mouvement punk et de l'autre de fortes mobilisations au sein de la jeunesse du pays, les Achtziger Jugendunruhen. Cet article analyse l'articulation de ces deux phénomènes. Au sein d'un espace contestataire fortement composite, le punk finit par jouer un rôle central, le mouvement dans son ensemble mettant en avant certains enjeux culturels, reprenant des éléments de la panoplie punk comme l'édition de fanzine, et choisissant des musiciens punks parmi ses porte-paroles. Cette jonction marque la forte spécificité de la Suisse, autant par l'implication de la scène punk au sein d'un mouvement contestataire plus large que par la recrudescence des mobilisations de la jeunesse au moment où elles se font de plus en plus rares en Europe. Elle peut se comprendre par une communauté d'intérêts (obtenir des lieux pour exprimer sa propre culture) et de valeurs (l'opposition au conservatisme). Néanmoins, cette force présence des aspects culturels au sein des Achtziger Jugendunruhen ne doit pas conduire à les réduire à ces seuls enjeux. Au contraire, les différents discours du mouvement mettent en avant l'autonomie comme volonté de changement radical, ainsi que des revendications plus larges comme la solidarité internationale ou la question du logement. Ainsi cet article vise à la fois à mieux comprendre la nature des Achtziger Jugendunruhen et à développer une analyse historique des années 80 d'une part et du conservatisme helvétique d'autre part.
