Prefabrication has been promoted as a means to improve the efficiency of the Australian house building industry. Issues affecting the uptake of prefabrication were identified through interviews with small and medium sized building companies. Prefabrication’s specific impact on housing construction and smaller organisations has not been frequently investigated. Similar past research has been conducted without the use of a clear theoretical grounding guiding the identification of relevant issues. The current study is guided by a combination of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This allowed the identification of a broad range of issues across attitudinal, normative, behavioural control and technology adaptation domains. Results revealed improved quality was often offset against practical cost implications. While a high quality of prefabricated products was reported, key technical challenges included coordinating the transporting of modules, and balancing standardisation and product flexibility. Resistance from traditional industry stakeholders regarding build methods, financing, and openness to encouraging prefabrication was commonly reported. The key role of government decision making in facilitating greater demand and competitiveness of prefabricated businesses in the consumer marketplace was also highlighted. Further research is currently being undertaken by the authors, which builds on the exploratory results of the current study through confirmatory, quantitative surveying.

The Parker Morris report of 1961 attempted, through the application of scientific principles, to define the minimum living space standards needed to accommodate household activities. But while early modernist research into ideas of existenzminimum were the work of avant-garde architects and thinkers, this report was commissioned by the British State. This normalization of scientific enquiry into space can be considered not only a response to new conditions in the mass production of housing – economies of scale, prefabrication, system-building and modular coordination – but also to the post-war boom in consumer goods. The domestic interior was assigned a key role as a privileged site of mass consumption as the production and micro-management of space in Britain became integral to the development of a planned national economy underpinned by Fordist principles. The apparently placeless and scale-less diagrams executed by Gordon Cullen to illustrate Parker Morris emblematize these relationships. Walls dissolve as space flows from inside to outside in a homogenized and ephemeral landscape whose limits are perhaps only the boundaries of the nation state and the circuits of capital.

This paper re-examines the 1961 Parker Morris report on housing standards in Britain. It explores the origins, scope, text and iconography of the report and suggests that these not only express a particularly modernist conception of space but one which presupposed very specific economic conditions and geographies.

Also known as Homes for Today and Tomorrow Parker Morris attempted, through the application of scientific principles, to define the minimum living space standards needed to accommodate household activities. But while early modernist research into notions of existenzminimum were the work of avant-garde architects and thinkers, Homes for Today and Tomorrow and its sister design manual Space in the Home were commissioned by the British State. In Britain, Parker Morris was the last explicit State-sponsored attempt to prescribe a normative spatial programme for national living. The calm neutral efficiency of family-life expressed in its diagrams was almost immediately problematised by the rise of 1960s counter-culture, the feminist movement and the oil crisis of 1972 which altered perhaps forever the spatial, temporal and economic conditions it had taken for granted. The debate on space-standards, however, continues.

They’re cheap. They’re in every settlement of significance in Britain, Ireland and elsewhere. We all use them but perhaps do not always admit to it. Especially, if we are architects.
Over the past decades Aldi/Lidl low cost supermarkets have escaped from middle Europe to take over large tracts of the English speaking world remaking them according to a formula of mass-produced sheds, buff-coloured cobble-lock car parks, logos in primary colours, bare-shelves and eclectic special offers. Response within architectural discourse to this phenomenon has been largely one of indifference and such places remain, perhaps reiterating Pevsner’s controversial insights into the bicycle shed, on the peripheries of what we might term architecture. This paper seeks to explore the spatial complexities of the discount supermarket and in doing so open up a discussion on the architecture of cheapness. As a road-map, it takes former managing director Dieter Brandes’ treatise on the Aldi formula, Bare Essentials: the Aldi Way to Retailing, and investigates the strategies through which economic exigencies manifest themselves in a series of spatial tactics which involve building. Central to this is the idea of architecture as system rather than form and, in Aldi/Lidl’s case, the result of a spatial network of flows. To understand the architecture of the supermarket, then, it is necessary to measure the times and spaces of supply across the scales of intersection between global and local.
Evaluating the energy, economy and precision of such systems challenges the liminal position of the commercial, the placeless and especially the cheap within architectural discourse. As is well known, architectures of mass-production and prefabrication and their origins exercised modernist thinkers such as Sigfried Giedion and Walter Gropius in the early twentieth century and has undergone a resurgence in recent times. Meanwhile, the mapping of the hitherto overlooked forms and iconography of commerce in Learning from Las Vegas (1971) was extended by Rem Koolhaas et al into an investigation of the technologies, systems and precedents of retail in the Harvard Design School Guide to Shopping, thirty years later in 2001. While obviously always a criteria for building, to find writings on architecture which explicitly celebrate cheapness as a design virtue or, indeed, even iterate the word cheap is more difficult. Walter Gropius’ essay ‘How can we build cheaper, better, more attractive houses?’ (1927), however, situates the cheap within the discussions – articulated, amongst others, by Karl Teige and Bruno Taut – surrounding the minimal dwelling and the moral benefits of absence of the 1920s and 30s.
In our contemporary age of heightened consumption, it is perhaps fitting that an architecture of bare essentials is defined in retail rather than in housing, a commercial existenzminimum where the Miesian paradox of ‘less is more’ is resold as a paradigm of ‘more for less’ in the ubiquitous yet overlooked architectures of the discount supermarket.

Para a construção de uma estrutura há diversos factores que influenciam a sua concepção, tais como o vão, a topografia do local, acessibilidades, os possíveis acidentes do terreno, como cursos de água ou a sua função. É de ressalvar ainda que o enquadramento paisagístico cada vez mais é tido em conta, embora não seja determinante para a sua função ou dimensionamento. Na construção de pontes existe uma grande variedade de métodos construtivos a usar variando estes com a dimensão da obra ou com a disponibilidade de equipamento por parte do empreiteiro. Cada vez mais deverá ser bem analisado o sistema a usar, uma vez que o custo do processo construtivo constitui uma percentagem elevada do valor final da obra, podendo ser reduzidos os custos pela escolha acertada do método. Com a presente dissertação pretende-se analisar os diferentes métodos construtivos existentes no mercado, sendo estes distinguidos entre sistemas com aplicação de préfabricação ou com betonagem in-situ, e ainda o processo a usar em função do vão a vencer.

Da necessidade de criação de habitações que se adaptem ao constante dinamismo do ser humano, surgiu a ideia da concepção de um edifício evolutivo com base na construção modular. A construção modular poderá ser entendida como sendo a principal resposta ao combate da construção de estruturas físicas e imóveis, com características inalteráveis ao longo do tempo. Com este trabalho idealizou-se uma habitação evolutiva, baseado nos conceitos da Coordenação Modular, identificando-se as suas especificações, exigências de desempenho e características funcionais. Foi considerada como medida modular base 0,10m. Os módulos foram pensados com o intuito de que o seu desempenho prático seja satisfatório. A sua base estrutural foi executada a partir do rearranjo de contentores marítimos. Previu-se ainda, o uso de coberturas verdes por serem uma solução comprovada de minorar notoriamente o efeito pernicioso que a construção tem sobre o meio ambiente, ao mesmo tempo que apresentam vantagens térmicas e acústicas. A questão do incentivo do uso da pré-fabricação em Portugal a uma maior escala, não poderia ser descurada. A apresentação de eventuais desenvolvimentos futuros é também relevante, dada a importância que é inerente ao âmbito da industrialização da construção. Do estudo realizado ficaram ainda, bem patentes, os benefícios da racionalização e da industrialização, tanto em termos económicos como em termos ambientais. É possível executar um projecto com níveis de perdas mais baixos e com índices de qualidade superiores a um menor preço.

Em Portugal, a temática da Construção Pré-fabricada, enquanto método construtivo, ainda não se encontra desenvolvida de forma muito aprofundada. Na sua grande maioria, os trabalhos e estudos efetuados centram-se em aspetos de projeto e dimensionamento de determinados componentes préfabricados. Elementos estruturais pré-fabricados são já frequentemente utilizados, por exemplo, em vias de comunicação, pontes, viadutos, passagens inferiores e superiores. No entanto, no âmbito dos edifícios, esta tecnologia ainda não está totalmente explorada, exceção feita a naves industriais. A definição de construção pré-fabricada ainda não é consensual e as dúvidas subsistem, tanto por parte da população em geral, como dos próprios intervenientes no setor da construção. Dadas as suas potencialidades, pretende-se estudar a construção pré-fabricada, no setor dos edifícios, enquanto metodologia construtiva e compará-la com a metodologia de construção tradicional. Numa primeira fase, o trabalho irá consistir em explorar um conjunto de conceitos, métodos, tecnologias e materiais utilizados em alguns países com maior grau de aplicação destas técnicas. Posteriormente, será feita uma comparação entre construção pré-fabricada e construção tradicional, no que diz respeito a planeamento, prazos, custos, sustentabilidade, segurança ou qualidade, com base em estudos comparativos já realizados a nível internacional. Atendendo à informação recolhida, será realizado um trabalho onde são referidos processos, que poderão ajudar a compreender melhor o que é a construção pré-fabricada enquanto método construtivo inovador – quais as suas vantagens, implicações e condicionantes – e avaliar a sua viabilidade enquanto solução construtiva.

Within the frame of the project REBUS, "Competitive solar heating systems for residential buildings", which is financed by Nordic Energy Research, a new type of compact solar combisystem with high degree of prefabrication was developed. A hydraulic and control concept was designed with the goal to get highest system efficiency for use with either a condensing natural gas boiler or a pellet boiler. Especially when using the potential of high peak power of modern condensing natural gas boilers, a new operation strategy of a natural gas boiler/solar combisystem can increase the energy savings of a small solar combisystem by about 80% compared to conventional operation strategies.

 Abstract: Prefabricated and modular solutions have formed a small part of the overall housing industry. This is particularly evident in Australia, where the market is dominated by hand-built housing using traditional construction techniques built by large-scale builders. This paper evaluates the ideal and the reality of prefabricated modular housing procurement in China for the Australian market. While there have been prefabricated components for the housing industry, primarily, most solutions are of volumetric nature. The findings question our understanding and methodology to prefabrication for Australia. The experiences of introducing building services into modules (pods) from overseas fabrication also have shortcomings. The case study presented indicates several of these problems and suggests a hybrid solution to volumetric delivery.

Assuming that the form of a building shell and its content the spatial form are distinct dimensions of architecture - however indivisible and interdependent -, this study focus, in the light of the Social Logic of Space (HILLIER; HANSON, 1984), on the intrinsic properties through which domestic space was structured in a sample of single-family dwellings built in João Pessoa (PB) during the 1970s - when the vocabulary of modern architecture still prevailed in Brazil though sharing the urban scene with other architectural trends -, in order to investigate regularities or divergences underlying their conception. These dwellings were originally classified (ARAÚJO, 2010a) in five categories defined according to the form of their building shells and to their prevailing construction techniques: (1) Brazilian modern legacy (considered as truly Brazilian modern style); (2) Paulista architecture (that refers to the modern production of São Paulo, Brazil, from the 1950s through the 1970s); (3) experiences of rationalization and prefabrication ; (4) experiences of adaptation to the climate (referring to a design strongly influenced by the hot and humid climate of North-eastern Brazil); and (5) hybrid (to account for a kind of stylistic hybridism that includes formal attributes, which evoke our colonial past). This study aims to determine, through the analyses of nineteen cases that represent each category, whether this taxonomy corresponds to distinct modes of spatial configuration. This research therefore proposes an approach to the classification of domestic architecture based on topological properties. The dwellings spatial organization was represented, quantified and analyzed, their spatial properties explored in consonance with one another and with the literature. Results pointed out that there is no evidence of a reciprocal relationship between the formal look of the built shells and their respective spatial structures

This project looked at the various responses, both political and aesthetic, to the end of socialist realism and the return of pre-war modernism as a desirable ideal. It considered both the built environment and objects of daily use (furniture, radios, TV sets, etc.) in several countries of the region, including Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Russia and Romania, also comparing developments there with corresponding ones in the west. Among particular aspects considered were the effects of Kruschev's speech in December 1954 to workers in construction, machine-building and design industries, in which he argued against monumentalism and criticised both "classical architecture" and socialist realism. The team see the real issue in interpreting Eastern European architecture as its lack of a critical edge, since official discourses took the place of any form of criticism and architects sought to implement the "official line". Megastructures became increasingly popular from the 1960s onwards and in Romania, for instance, came to dominate the city in the late 1980s. Such structures proved an efficient way to control the environment in countries plagued by prefabrication and social housing, and the group see the exhibition of inflated concrete grids as perhaps the most important feature of Eastern European architecture in the 1960s and 1970s. They also point out the rarity of glass and steel architecture in the east, where the preferred material was concrete, a material seen as "revolutionary" as it was the product of heavy industry and was grey, i.e. the workers' colour. Tactile elements were more important here than the visual elements favoured in the west, and a solidity more in line with the dominant ideology than the ephemeral qualities of glass.

3D Modular construction is poorly known and scarcely published in technical literature. In spite of that there are an increasing number of manufacturers offering their products in different countries. This method has largely evolved from early examples such as the American Gold Rush prefabrication in the nineteenth century, the Sears precut homes or Voisin´s prototypes for modular homes, to the end of the first half of the twentieth century. In this period a non negligible number of attempts in 3D modular construction have been carried out, ranging from theoretical proposals to several hundred or thousand units produced. Selected examples of modular architecture will be analyses in order to illustrate its technical evolution, concerning materials, structure, transportation and on site assembly. Success and failure factors of the different systems will be discussed. Conclusions about building criteria shown in them and their applicability in current architecture will be drawn.

Los nombres que se usan actualmente para las grúas los ponen las empresas fabricantes y muy frecuentemente no tienen relación con su tipología ni con su capacidad. Por otra parte, es de uso común en la construcción, llamar a las grúas usando su tonelaje nominal que coincide normalmente con su capacidad máxima que se obtiene a radio mínimo. Existe una controversia por el uso de este valor ya que no suele definir bien la capacidad de las maquinas. En cuanto el radio de trabajo se aleja de sus valores mínimos, las grúas están limitadas por el momento de vuelco que no tiene porque comportarse de manera proporcional o ni siquiera relacionada con el valor de la capacidad nominal. Esto hace que comparar grúas mediante sus capacidades nominales (que son sus denominaciones) pueda inducir a errores importantes. Como alternativa, se pretende estudiar el uso de momento máximo de vuelco MLM por sus siglas en ingles (Maximum Load Moment) para intentar definir la capacidad real de las grúas. Se procede a realizar un análisis técnico y financiero de grúas con respecto a ambos valores mencionados con objeto de poder determinar cual de los dos parámetros es más fiable a la hora de definir la capacidad real de estas maquinas. Para ello, se seleccionan dentro de las tres tipologías más importantes por su presencia e importancia en la construcción (grúas de celosía sobre cadenas, grúas telescópicas sobre camión y grúas torre) nueve grúas de distintos tamaños y capacidades con objeto de analizar una serie de parámetros técnicos y sus costes. Se realizan de este modo diversas comparativas analizando los resultados en función de las tipologías y de los tamaños de las distintas maquinas. Para cada máquina se obtienen las capacidades y los momentos de vuelco correspondientes a distintos radios de trabajo. Asimismo, se obtiene el MLM y el coste hora de cada grúa, este último como suma de la amortización de la máquina, intereses del capital invertido, consumos, mantenimiento y coste del operador. Los resultados muestran las claras deficiencias del tonelaje nominal como valor de referencia para definir la capacidad de las grúas ya que grúas con el mismo tonelaje nominal pueden dar valores de capacidad de tres a uno (e incluso mayores) cuando los radios de trabajo son importantes. A raiz de este análisis se propone el uso del MLM en lugar del tonelaje nominal para la denominación de las grúas ya que es un parámetro mucho más fiable. Siendo conscientes de la dificultad que supone un cambio de esta entidad al tratarse de un uso común a nivel mundial, se indican posibles actuaciones concretas que puedan ir avanzando en esa dirección como seria por ejemplo la nomenclatura oficial de los fabricantes usando el MLM dentro del nombre de la grúa que también podría incluir la tipología o al menos alguna actuación legislativa sencilla como obligar al fabricante a indicar este valor en las tablas y características de cada máquina. El ratio analizado Coste horario de la grúa / MLM resulta ser de gran interés y permite llegar a la conclusión que en todas las tipologías de grúas, la eficiencia del coste por hora y por la capacidad (dada por el MLM) aumenta al aumentar la capacidad de la grúa. Cuando los tamaños de cada tipología se reducen, esta eficiencia disminuye y en algunos casos incluso drasticamente. La tendencia del mundo de la construcción de prefabricación y modularización que conlleva pesos y dimensiones de cargas cada vez más grandes, demandan cada vez grúas de mayor capacidad y se podría pensar en un primer momento que ante un crecimiento de capacidades tan significativo, el coste de las grúas se podría disparar y por ello disminuir la eficiencia de estas máquinas. A la vista de los resultados obtenidos con este análisis, no solo no ocurre este problema sino que se observa que dicho aumento de tamaños y capacidades de grúas redunda en un aumento de su eficiencia en cualquiera de las tipologías de estas maquinas que han sido estudiadas. The crane names that are actually used are given by crane manufacturers and, very frequently, they do not have any relationship with the crane type nor with its capacity. On the other hand, it is common in construction to use the nominal capacity (which corresponds in general to the capacity at minimum radius) as crane name. The use of this figure is controversial since it does not really reflect the real crane capacity. When the working radius increases a certain amount from its minimum values, the crane capacity starts to be limited by the crane tipping load and the moment is not really related to the value of the nominal capacity. Therefore, comparing cranes by their nominal capacity (their names) can lead to important mistakes. As an alternative, the use of the maximum load moment (MLM) can be studied for a better definition of real crane capacity. A technical and financial analysis of cranes is conducted using both parameters to determine which one is more reliable in order to define crane’s real capacity. For this purpose, nine cranes with different sizes and capacities will be selected within the most relevant crane types (crawler lattice boom cranes, telescopic truck mounted cranes and tower cranes) in order to analyze several parameters. The technical and economic results will be compared according to the crane types and sizes of the machines. For each machine, capacities and load moments are obtained for several working radius as well as MLM and hourly costs of cranes. Hourly cost is calculated adding up depreciation, interests of invested capital, consumables, maintenance and operator’s cost. The results show clear limitations for the use of nominal capacity as a reference value for crane definition since cranes with the same nominal capacity can have capacity differences of 3 to 1 (or even bigger) when working on important radius. From this analysis, the use of MLM as crane name instead of nominal capacity is proposed since it is a much more reliable figure. Being aware of the difficulty of such change since nominal capacity is commonly used worldwide; specific actions are suggested to progress in that direction. One good example would be that manufacturers would include MLM in their official crane names which could also include the type as well. Even legal action can be taken by simply requiring to state this figure in the crane charts and characteristics of every machine. The analyzed ratio: hourly cost / MLM is really interesting since it leads to the conclusion that for all crane types, the efficiency of the hourly cost divided by capacity (given by MLM) increases when the crane capacity is higher. When crane sizes are smaller, this efficiency is lower and can fall dramatically in certain cases. The developments in the construction world regarding prefabrication and modularization mean bigger weights and dimensions, which create a demand for bigger crane capacities. On a first approach, it could be thought that crane costs could rise significantly because of this capacity hugh increase reducing in this way crane efficiency. From the results obtained here, it is clear that it is definitely not the case but the capacity increase of cranes will end up in higher efficiency levels for all crane types that have been studied.
