Specimens of two species of planktic foraminifera, Globigerinoides ruber and Globigerinella siphonifera, were grown under controlled laboratory conditions at a range of temperatures (18-31 °C), salinities (32-44 psu) and pH levels (7.9-8.4). The shells were examined for their calcium isotope compositions (d44/40Ca) and strontium to calcium ratios (Sr/Ca) using Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Although the total variation in d44/40Ca (~0.3 per mill) in the studied species is on the same order as the external reproducibility, the data set reveals some apparent trends that are controlled by more than one environmental parameter. There is a well-defined inverse linear relationship between d44/40Ca and Sr/Ca in all experiments, suggesting similar controls on these proxies in foraminiferal calcite independent of species. Analogous to recent results from inorganically precipitated calcite, we suggest that Ca isotope fractionation and Sr partitioning in planktic foraminifera are mainly controlled by precipitation kinetics. This postulation provides us with a unique tool to calculate precipitation rates and draws support from the observation that Sr/Ca ratios are positively correlated with average growth rates. At 25 °C water temperature, precipitation rates in G. siphonifera and G. ruber are calculated to be on the order of 2000 and 3000 µmol/m**2/h, respectively. The lower d44/40Ca observed at 29 °C in both species is consistent with increased precipitation rates at high water temperatures. Salinity response of d44/40Ca (and Sr/Ca) in G. siphonifera implies that this species has the highest precipitation rates at the salinity of its natural habitat, whereas increasing salinities appear to trigger higher precipitation rates in G. ruber. Isotope effects that cannot be explained by precipitation rate in planktic foraminifera can be explained by a biological control, related to a vacuolar pathway for supply of ions during biomineralization and a pH regulation mechanism in these vacuoles. In case of an additional pathway via cross-membrane transport, supplying light Ca for calcification, the d44/40Ca of the reservoir is constrained as -0.2 per mill relative to seawater. Using a Rayleigh distillation model, we calculate that calcification occurs in a semi-open system, where less than half of the Ca supplied by vacuolization is utilized for calcite precipitation. Our findings are relevant for interpreting paleo-proxy data on d44/40Ca and Sr/Ca in foraminifera as well as understanding their biomineralization processes.

The effects of copper on as-cast structure, recrystallization and precipitation kinetics of strip cast low carbon steel were investigated. As-cast microstructure mainly consists of polygonal ferrite and Widmanstatten ferrite. Recrystallization responses were strongly dependent on initial microstructure and Cu content. Precipitation strengthening was observed in high copper content alloys.

The effect of a simulated coiling treatment on a strip cast Nb-containing steel has been investigated. A lath ferritic supersaturated microstructure was observed in the as-cast condition with no coiling. The microstructure remained lath like during coiling at high temperature (850 °C) and the formation of chemically complex Nb-rich precipitates containing C, N, Si and S was observed. Coiling at an intermediate temperature (700 °C) caused the formation of polygonal ferrite with a dendritic morphology due to chemical micro-segregation. The polygonal ferrite contained Nb(C,N) precipitates. The microstructure remained lath like at the lowest coiling temperature (600 °C). In the latter case the precipitation of Nb-rich clusters was observed, and atom probe tomography revealed them to be ∼85% Fe. Small angle neutron scattering and transmission electron microscopy were used to quantify precipitation kinetics during coiling and the mechanical properties were evaluated with a shear punch apparatus. A yield strength model was developed to describe the observed mechanical behaviour, and this showed that the two largest contributors to strength were the bainitic microstructure and the Nb-rich precipitates. Strategies to further strengthen these materials are suggested.

The method of the kinetics separation of copper and palladium by sodium hydroxide precipitation was described. The reaction orders, apparent rate constants, apparent activation energy of the reactions between sodium hydroxide and copper, and palladium were determined, and the introduced error for the determination of palladium with separating copper and-palladium by sodium hydroxide precipitation was calculated, The proposed method has been applied to determine palladium in the aldehyde catalyst with good result.

Solution chemistry plays a significant role in the rate and type of foulant formed on heated industrial surfaces. This paper describes the effect of sucrose, silica (SiO2), Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, and trans-aconitic acid on the kinetics and solubility of SiO2 and calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) in mixed salt solutions containing sucrose and refines models previously proposed. The developed SiO2 models show that sucrose and SiO2 concentrations are the main parameters that determine apparent order (n) and apparent rate of reaction (k) and SiO2 solubility over a 24 h period. The calcium oxalate solubility model shows that while increasing [Mg2+] increases COM solubility, the reverse is so with increasing sucrose concentrations. The role of solution species on COM crystal habit is discussed and the appearance of the uncommon (001) face is explained.

The hydrolysis/precipitation behaviors of Al3+, Al-13 and Al-30 under conditions typical for flocculation in water treatment were investigated by studying the particulates' size development, charge characteristics, chemical species and speciation transformation of coagulant hydrolysis precipitates. The optimal pH conditions for hydrolysis precipitates formation for AlCl3, PAC(A113) and PAC(A130) were 6.5-7.5, 8.5-9.5, and 7.5-9.5, respectively. The precipitates' formation rate increased with the increase in dosage, and the relative rates were AlCl3 >> PAC(A130) > PACA113. The precipitates' size increased when the dosage increased from 50 mu M to 200 mu M, but it decreased when the dosage increased to 800 AM. The Zeta potential of coagulant hydrolysis precipitates decreased with the increase in pH for the three coagulants. The isoelectric points of the freshly formed precipitates for AlCl3, PAC(A113) and PAC(A130) were 7.3, 9.6 and 9.2, respectively. The Zeta potentials of AlCl3 hydrolysis precipitates were lower than those of PAC(A113) and PAC(A130) when pH > 5.0. The Zeta potential of PAC(A130) hydrolysis precipitates was higher than that of PACA113 at the acidic side, but lower at the alkaline side. The dosage had no obvious effect on the Zeta potential of hydrolysis precipitates under fixed pH conditions. The increase in Zeta potential with the increase in dosage under uncontrolled pH conditions was due to the pH depression caused by coagulant addition. Al-Ferron research indicated that the hydrolysis precipitates of AlCl3 were composed of amorphous AI(OH)3 precipitates, but those of PACA113 and PACA130 were composed of aggregates of Al-13 and Al-30, respectively. Al3+ was the most un-stable species in coagulants, and its hydrolysis was remarkably influenced by solution pH. Al-13 and Al-30 species were very stable, and solution pH and aging had little effect on the chemical species of their hydrolysis products. The research method involving coagulant hydrolysis precipitates based on Al-Ferron reaction kinetics was studied in detail. The Al species classification based on complex reaction kinetic of hydrolysis precipitates and Ferron reagent was different from that measured in a conventional coagulant assay using the Al--Ferron method. The chemical composition of Al-a, Al-b and Al-c depended on coagulant and solution pH. The Al-b measured in the current case was different from Keggin Al-13, and the high Alb content in the AlCl3 hydrolysis precipitates could not used as testimony that most of the Al3+ Was converted to highly charged Al-13 species during AlCl3 coagulation.

The electrolyte, NaBF4, can be enriched into the matrix of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) film during the p-doping potential cycling between 0.6 and -0.9 V. It has been demonstrated that this enrichment is originated from the mixed ion transfer between doping and dedoping, i.e. BF4- anion migrate into the PEDOT film during the oxidation process, the Ne cation insert into the film during the reduction process, and then, the electrolyte is accumulated into the film matrix after the multiple CV cycling. The quantitative analysis of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirmed the enrichment of NaBF4 in the PEDOT film.

The influence of additions of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 wt.% Ag in the isothermal aging kinetics of the Cu-8 wt.% Al alloy was studied using microhardness measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, optical and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The results indicate that the presence of silver is responsible for the shift of the equilibrium concentration to higher Al contents, allowing the formation of the gamma(1) phase (Al4Cu9) in this alloy. For Ag additions up to 6% the dominant kinetic process is Ag precipitation and for additions from 8 to 12% Ag the nucleation of the perlitic phase dominates. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The influence of 4 wt.%Ag addition on the isothermal decomposition kinetics of the beta' phase in the Cu-9wt.%Al alloy was studied by microhardness measurements, optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, and X-ray diffractometry. The results showed that the presence of Ag decreases the beta' --> (alpha + gamma(1)) decomposition reaction rate in the Cu-9%Al-4%Ag alloy, an effect that may be associated to the gamma(1) phase which catalyses the Ag precipitation, making it faster than the decomposition reaction, and thus, stabilizing the martensitic phase. The influence of the disordered (Cu)-alpha phase in the isothermal aging kinetics of the Cu-19 at.%Al alloy was studied using microhardness measurements, optical and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The results indicate that the beta'-->(alpha+gamma (1)) decomposition reaction rate increases with the increase of the temperature in the range between 150 and 500 degreesC and at 600 degreesC the reaction is delayed by the alpha phase precipitation. The value obtained for the activation energy indicates an interface diffusion controlled reaction. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
