“Privilege to Kill” phenomenon on developing countries’ roads : a preliminary case study of China

This study aims to examine the severe consequences of traffic crashes related to a special group of drivers in China, which is called the “Second Rich & Powerful Generation” (SRPG). The unique driving behaviors and attitudes of this special group are intertwined with the general cultural and social environment in China. To investigate the difference of traffic crash consequences between drivers who belong to SRPG and general driver population, injuries and fatalities in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 were compared. Results consistently showed that while no significant difference was detected between these two groups in terms of injuries, fatalities per crash caused by SRPG were significantly larger than that caused by general driver population. Findings from our study clearly demonstrate the complexity of road safety issues in developing countries, and can also be used to develop road safety improvement strategies tailored to SRPG.

Investigative trends in understanding penalty-kick performance in association football: An ecological dynamics perspective

There have been different approaches to studying penalty-kick performance in association football. In this paper, the authors synthesize key findings within an ecological dynamics theoretical framework. According to this theoretical perspective, information is the cornerstone for understanding the dynamics of action regulation in penalty-kick performance. Research suggests that investigators need to identify the information sources that are most relevant to penalty-kick performance. An important task is to understand how constraints can channel (i.e. change, emphasize or mask) information sources used to regulate upcoming actions and how the influence of these constraints is expressed in players' behavioural dynamics. Due to the broad range of constraints influencing penalty-kick performance, it is recommended that future research adopts an interdisciplinary focus on performance assessment to overcome the current lack of representativeness in penalty-kick experimental designs. Such an approach would serve to capture the information-based control of action of both players as components of this dyadic system in competitive sport.

Destabilising Privilege: Disrupting Deficit Thinking in White Pre-service Teachers on Field Experience in Culturally Diverse, High Poverty Schools

This chapter examines the personal reflections and experiences of several pre-service and newly graduated teachers, including Kristie, who were involved in the NETDS program. Their documented professional journeys, which include descriptions of struggling when their privileged, taken-for-granted ways of being were destabilized, and grappling with tensions related to their own predispositions and values, are investigated in the context of Whiteness and privilege theory.

A penalty-based genetic algorithm for the migration cost-aware virtual machine placement problem in cloud data centers

In the past few years, the virtual machine (VM) placement problem has been studied intensively and many algorithms for the VM placement problem have been proposed. However, those proposed VM placement algorithms have not been widely used in today's cloud data centers as they do not consider the migration cost from current VM placement to the new optimal VM placement. As a result, the gain from optimizing VM placement may be less than the loss of the migration cost from current VM placement to the new VM placement. To address this issue, this paper presents a penalty-based genetic algorithm (GA) for the VM placement problem that considers the migration cost in addition to the energy-consumption of the new VM placement and the total inter-VM traffic flow in the new VM placement. The GA has been implemented and evaluated by experiments, and the experimental results show that the GA outperforms two well known algorithms for the VM placement problem.

Exclusive consumers: The discourse of privilege in elite Indian school websites

This chapter undertakes a study of how elite schools in India have a historical, colonial legacy while incorporating global, market oriented, international agenda to fit in with present times. Drawing on Bourdieu’s notion of elite schools and Foucault’s theory of discourse, a qualitative analysis is undertaken of 21 elite schools. The primary argument advanced is that the websites of the schools contain the discourses of privilege and distinction along with the discourses of inclusion and exclusion, market ideology and individual merit with the aim being to promote a local, global elite ascendancy.

{C}^0$ penalty methods for the fully nonlinear Monge-Ampère equation

In this paper, we develop and analyze C(0) penalty methods for the fully nonlinear Monge-Ampere equation det(D(2)u) = f in two dimensions. The key idea in designing our methods is to build discretizations such that the resulting discrete linearizations are symmetric, stable, and consistent with the continuous linearization. We are then able to show the well-posedness of the penalty method as well as quasi-optimal error estimates using the Banach fixed-point theorem as our main tool. Numerical experiments are presented which support the theoretical results.

An interior penalty method for a sixth-order elliptic equation

We derive and study a C(0) interior penalty method for a sixth-order elliptic equation on polygonal domains. The method uses the cubic Lagrange finite-element space, which is simple to implement and is readily available in commercial software. After introducing some notation and preliminary results, we provide a detailed derivation of the method. We then prove the well-posedness of the method as well as derive quasi-optimal error estimates in the energy norm. The proof is based on replacing Galerkin orthogonality with a posteriori analysis techniques. Using this approach, we are able to obtain a Cea-like lemma with minimal regularity assumptions on the solution. Numerical experiments are presented that support the theoretical findings.

A QUADRATIC C degrees INTERIOR PENALTY METHOD FOR LINEAR FOURTH ORDER BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS WITH BOUNDARY CONDITIONS OF THE CAHN-HILLIARD TYPE

We develop a quadratic C degrees interior penalty method for linear fourth order boundary value problems with essential and natural boundary conditions of the Cahn-Hilliard type. Both a priori and a posteriori error estimates are derived. The performance of the method is illustrated by numerical experiments.

Analysis of an Interior Penalty Method for Fourth Order Problems on Polygonal Domains

Error analysis for a stable C (0) interior penalty method is derived for general fourth order problems on polygonal domains under minimal regularity assumptions on the exact solution. We prove that this method exhibits quasi-optimal order of convergence in the discrete H (2), H (1) and L (2) norms. L (a) norm error estimates are also discussed. Theoretical results are demonstrated by numerical experiments.

A fully discrete C-0 interior penalty Galerkin approximation of the extended Fisher-Kolmogorov equation

A fully discrete C-0 interior penalty finite element method is proposed and analyzed for the Extended Fisher-Kolmogorov (EFK) equation u(t) + gamma Delta(2)u - Delta u + u(3) - u = 0 with appropriate initial and boundary conditions, where gamma is a positive constant. We derive a regularity estimate for the solution u of the EFK equation that is explicit in gamma and as a consequence we derive a priori error estimates that are robust in gamma. An interior penalty method for distributed optimal control problems governed by the biharmonic operator

In this paper, a C-0 interior penalty method has been proposed and analyzed for distributed optimal control problems governed by the biharmonic operator. The state and adjoint variables are discretized using continuous piecewise quadratic finite elements while the control variable is discretized using piecewise constant approximations. A priori and a posteriori error estimates are derived for the state, adjoint and control variables under minimal regularity assumptions. Numerical results justify the theoretical results obtained. The a posteriori error estimators are useful in adaptive finite element approximation and the numerical results indicate that the sharp error estimators work efficiently in guiding the mesh refinement.
