Fine particles of barium ferrite (BaFe12O19) were synthesized by the conventional ceramic technique. These materials were then characterized by the X-ray diffraction method and incorporated in the natural rubber matrix according to a specific receipe for various loadings of ferrite. The rubber ferrite composites (RFC) thus obtained have several applications, and have the advantage of molding into complex shapes. For applications such as microwave absorbers, these composites should have an appropriate dielectric strength with the required mechanical and magnetic properties. The N330 (HAF) carbon black has been added to these RFCs for various loadings to modify the dielectric and mechanical properties. In this article we report the effect of carbon black on the mechanical and dielectric properties of these RFCs. Both the mechanical and dielectric properties can be enhanced by the addition of an appropriate amount of carbon black

Fine particles of barium ferrite (BaFe12O19) belonging to the M-type hexagonal ferrites were prepared by the conventional ceramic techniques. They were incorporated into a nitrile rubber matrix according to a specific recipe for various loadings to produce rubber ferrite composites (RFC). The percolation threshold is not reached for a maximum loading of 130 phr (parts per hundred rubber). Here in this paper, the magnetic properties and processability of the nitrile rubber based RFCs containing barium ferrite (BaF) and HAF carbon black is reported. The magnetic properties of the ceramic ferrite and these rubber ferrite composites were evaluated and it was found that the coercivity values of RFCs were less than that of the ceramic BaF, but remained constant with the loading of both the ferrite filler and carbon black. However, other properties like saturation magnetization and magnetic remanence increased with the loading of ferrite filler.

Flexile single layer electromagnetic wave absorbers were designed by incorporating appropriate amounts of carbon black in a nitrile butadiene rubber matrix along with an optimized amount of magnetic counterpart, namely, barium hexaferrite for applications in S, C, and X-bands. Effective dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability were measured using cavity perturbation method in the frequency range of 2–12 GHz. The microwave absorbing characteristics of the composites were studied in the S, C, and X-bands employing a model in which an electromagnetic wave is incident normally on a metal terminated single layer. Reflection loss exceeding 20 dB is obtained for all the samples in a wide frequency range of 2–12 GHz when an appropriate absorber thickness between 5 and 9mm is chosen. The impact of carbon black is clearly observed in the optimized composites on the mechanical strength, thickness, band width of absorption, dielectric properties,

Thermally stable elastomeric composites based on ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) and conducting polymer-modified carbon black (CPMCB) additives were produced by casting and crosslinked by compression molding. CPMCB represent a novel thermally stable conductive compound made via ""in situ"" deposition of intrinsically conducting polymers (ICP) such as polyaniline or polypyrrole on carbon black particles. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the composites are thermally stable with no appreciable degradation at ca. 300 degrees C. Incorporating CPMCB has been found to be advantageous to the processing of composites, as the presence of ICP lead to a better distribution of the filler within the rubber matrix, as confirmed by morphological analysis. These materials have a percolation threshold range of 5-10 phr depending on the formulation and electrical dc conductivity values in the range of 1 x 10(-3) to 1 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) above the percolation threshold. A less pronounced reinforcing effect was observed in composites produced with ICP-modified additives in relation to those produced only with carbon black. The results obtained in this study show the feasibility of this method for producing stable, electrically conducting composites with elastomeric characteristics. POLYM. COMPOS., 30:897-906, 2009. This work describes the preparation and characterization of composite materials obtained by the combination of natural rubber (NR) and carbon black (CB) in different percentages, aiming to improve their mechanical properties, processability, and electrical conductivity, aiming future applications as transducer in pressure sensors. The composites NR/CB were characterized through optical microscopy (OM), DC conductivity, thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA), thermogravimetry (TGA), and stress-strain test. The electrical conductivity varied between 10(-9) and 10 S m(-1), depending on the percentage of CB in the composite. Furthermore, a linear (and reversible) dependence of the conductivity on the applied pressure between 0 and 1.6 MPa was observed for the sample with containing 80 wt % of NR and 20% of CB. Composites of natural rubber and carbon black have attracted great interest due to their technological applications. In this work natural rubber (NR) and carbon black (CB) were compounded, aiming the development of composites with good mechanical properties, processability and electrical conductivity for use as pressure sensors. The electrical conductivity changes from 10(-11) to 10(-2) S.cm(-1) depending on the percentage of CB in the composite. It was also observed that the conductivity varies reversibly and linearly with the applied pressure. The latter demonstrates that this material can be used as pressure sensors.

Measurements of 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxation times, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and AC Impedance Spectroscopy (IS) are reported for composites based on PEO8:LiClO4 and carbon black (CB), prepared by two methods: solvent and fusion processing. Three nuclear relaxation processes were identified for 1H nuclei: (i) belonging to the polymer chains in the amorphous phase, loosely bound to the CB particles, whose dynamics is almost the same as for unfilled polymer, (ii) belonging to the polymer chains which are tightly attached to the CB particles, and (iii) belonging to the crystalline phase in the loose polymer chain. The paramagnetic electronic susceptibility of the composite samples, measured by EPR, was interpreted by assuming a contribution of localized spin states that follow a Curie law, and a Pauli-like contribution of delocalized spins. A significant change of the EPR linewidth was observed at 40 K, which is the temperature where the Curie and Pauli susceptibilities equally contribute to the paramagnetic electronic susceptibility. The electrical properties are very sensitive to the preparation methods of the composites, which conditions the interaction between carbon particle-carbon particle and carbon particle-polymer chain. Classical statistic models to describe the conductivity in these media were not satisfactory. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This work shows the preparation and characterization of composites obtained by mixing natural rubber (NR) and carbon black (CB) in different percentages aiming suitable mechanical properties, processability and electrical conductivity for future applications as transducers in pressure sensors. The composites NR/CB are characterized through dc conductivity, thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA), thermogravimetry (TGA) and stress-strain test. The electrical conductivity changed from 10-9 to 10 Sm-1 depending on the percentage of CB in the composite. Besides, it was found a linear (and reversible) dependence of the conductivity on the applied pressure in the range from 0 to 1.6 MPa for the sample 80/20 (NR/CB wt%).

This thesis evaluates a novel asymmetric capacitor incorporating a carbon foam supported nickel hydroxide positive electrode and a carbon black negative electrode. A series of symmetric capacitors were prepared to characterize the carbon black (CB) negative electrode. The influence of the binder, PTFE, content on the cell properties was evaluated. X-ray diffraction characterization of the nickel electrode during cycling is also presented. The 3 wt% and 5 wt% PTFE/CB symmetric cells were examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and constant current charge/discharge measurements. As compared with symmetric cells containing more PTFE, the 3 wt% cell has the highest average specific capacitance, energy density and power density over 300 cycles, 121.8 F/g, 6.44 Wh/kg, and 604.1 W/kg, respectively. Over the 3 to 10 wt% PTFE/CB range, the 3 wt% sample exhibited the lowest effective resistance and the highest BET surface area. Three asymmetric cells (3 wt% PTFE/CB negative electrode and a nickel positive) were fabricated; cycle life was examined at 3 current densities. The highest average energy and power densities over 1000 cycles were 20 Wh/kg (21 mA/cm2) and 715 W/kg (31 mA/cm2), respectively. The longest cycle life was 11,505 cycles (at 8 mA/cm2), with an average efficiency of 79% and an average energy density of 14 Wh/kg. The XRD results demonstrate that the cathodically deposited nickel electrode is a typical α-Ni(OH)2 with the R3m structure (ABBCCA stacking); the charged electrodes are 3γ-NiOOH with the same stacking as the α-type; the discharged electrodes (including as-formed electrode) are aged to β’-Ni(OH)2 (a disordered β) with the P3m structure (ABAB stacking). A 3γ remnant was observed.

Conductive submicronic coatings of carbon black (CB)/silica composites have been prepared by a sol-gel process and deposited by spray-coating on glazed porcelain tiles. Stable CB dispersions with surfactant were rheologically characterized to determine the optimum CB-surfactant ratio. The composites were analyzed by Differential Thermal and Thermogravimetric Analysis and Hg-Porosimetry. Thin coatings were thermally treated in the temperature range of 300-500degC in air atmosphere. The microstructure of the coatings was determined by scanning electron microscopy and the structure evaluated by confocal Raman spectroscopy. The electrical characterization of the samples was carried out using dc intensity-voltage curves. The coatings exhibit good adhesion, high density and homogeneous distribution of the conductive filler (CB) in the insulate matrix (silica) that protects against the thermal degradation of the CB nanoparticles during the sintering process. As consequence, the composite coatings show the lowest resistivity values for CB-based films reported in the literature, with values of ~7times10 -5Omegam.
