A series of five Ni(II)-complexes containing the same tridentate Schiff base but different monoanionic ligands (N-3(-), NO3-, PhCOO- and NO2-)reveals that the competitive as well as the cooperative role of the monoanions and phenoxo group in bridging the metal ions play the key role in the variation of molecular architecture.

Three new mononuclear complexes of nitrogen-sulfur donor sets, formulated as (Fe-II(L)Cl-2] (1), [Co-II(L)Cl-2] (2) and [Ni-II(L)Cl-2] (3) where L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane, were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All the complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The solid state structures of complexes I and 3 have been established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structural analysis evidences isomorphous crystals with the metal ion in a distorted octahedral geometry that comprises NSSN ligand donors with trans located pyridine rings and chlorides in cis positions. In dimethylformamide solution, the complexes were found to exhibit Fe-II/Fe-III, co(II)/co(III) and Ni-II/Ni-III quasi-reversible redox couples in cyclic voltammograms with E-1/2 values (versus Ag/AgCl at 298 K) of +0.295, +0.795 and +0.745 V for 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Three double phenoxido-bridged dinuclear nickel(II) complexes, namely [Ni-2(L-1)(2)(NCS)(2)] (1), [Ni-2(L-2)(2)(NCS)(2)] (2), and [Ni-2(L-3)(2)(NCS)(2)] (3) have been synthesized using the reduced tridentate Schiff-base ligands 2-[1-(3-methylamino-propylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL1), 2-[1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL2), and 2-[1-(3-dimethylarnino-propylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL3), respectively. The coordination compounds have been characterized by X-ray structural analyses, magnetic-susceptibility measurements, and various spectroscopic methods. In all complexes, the nickel(II) ions are penta-coordinated in a square-pyramidal environment, which is severely distorted in the case of 1 (Addison parameter tau = 0.47) and 3 (tau = 0.29), while it is almost perfect for 2 (tau = 0.03). This arrangement leads to relatively strong antiferromagnetic interactions between the Ni(II) (S = 1) metal centers as mediated by double phenoxido bridges (with J values of -23.32 (1), -35.45 (2), and -34.02 (3) cm(3) K mol(-1), in the convention H = -2JS(1)S(2)). The catalytic activity of these Ni compounds has been investigated for the aerial oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol. Kinetic data analysis following Michaelis-Menten treatment reveals that the catecholase activity of the complexes is influenced by the flexibility of the ligand and also by the geometry around the metal ion. Electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) studies (in the positive mode) have been performed for all the coordination compounds in the presence of 3,5-DTBC to characterize potential complex-substrate intermediates. The mass-spectrometry data, corroborated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, suggest that the metal centers are involved in the catecholase activity exhibited by the complexes.

Cobalt(II) and nickel(II) djenkolates CoC7H12N2O4S2. H2O (I) and NiC7H12N2O4S2. H2O (II) were synthesized by the reaction of potassium djenkolate with the respective chlorides. LR spectra suggested coordination via the COO- and NH2 groups for the ligands in both compounds. Visible absorption spectra confirmed the octahedral structure of the complexes. X-ray powder diffraction patterns were indexed in the orthorhombic and monoclinic unit cells with parameters: a = 11.35, b = 7.35, c = 6.85 Angstrom for I and a = 11.54, b = 7.45, c = 6.90 Angstrom, beta = 94.95 degrees for II.

A binucleating potentially hexadentate chelating agent containing oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur as potential donor atoms (H2ONNO) has been synthesized by condensing alpha,alpha-xylenebis(N-methyldithiocarbazate) with 2,4-pentanedione. An X-ray crystallographic structure determination shows that the Schiff base remains in its ketoimine tautomeric form with the protons attached to the imine nitrogen atoms. The reaction of the Schiff base with nickel(II) acetate in a 1:1 stoichiometry leads to the formation of a dinuclear nickel(II) complex [Ni(ONNO)](2) (ONNO2- = dianionic form of the Schiff base) containing N,O-chelated tetradentate ligands, the sulfur donors remaining uncoordinated. A single crystal X-ray structure determination of this dimer reveals that each ligand binds two low spin nickel(II) ions, bridged by a xylyl group. The nickel(II) atoms adopt a distorted square-planar geometry in a trans-N2O2 donor environment. Reaction of the Schiff base with nickel(II) acetate in the presence of excess pyridine leads to the formation of a similar dinuclear complex, [Ni(ONNO)(py)](2), but in this case comprises five coordinate high-spin Ni(II) ions with pyridine ligands occupying the axial coordination sites as revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The whole set of the nickel(II) complexes with no derivatized edta-type hexadentate ligands has been investigated from their structural and electronic properties. Two more complexes have been prepared in order to complete the whole set: trans(O5)-[Ni(ED3AP)]2- and trans(O5O6)-[Ni(EDA3P)]2- complexes. trans(O5) geometry has been verified crystallographically and trans(O5O6) geometry of the second complex has been predicted by the DFT theory and spectral analysis. Mutual dependance has been established between: the number of the five-membered carboxylate rings, octahedral/tetrahedral deviation of metal-ligand/nitrogen-neighbour-atom angles and charge-transfer energies (CTE) calculated by the Morokuma’s energetic decomposition analysis; energy of the absorption bands and HOMO–LUMO gap.

Isonitroso derivatives of copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes of N,N′-ethylenebis(acetylacetoneimine) have been prepared by nitrosation of the respective complexes using nitric oxide as well as nitrite ion. The condensation of isonitrosoacetylacetone in the presence and in the absence of nickel(II) has been investigated. The i.r. and electronic spectra and magnetic moment of the nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes have been studied. The nature of bonding of the ligand to the metal ion is discussed. The complexes have planar structures.

The syntheses and characterization of some new mixed-ligand nickel(II) complexes {Ni(L-1)(PPh3)] (1), Ni(L-1)(Py)] (2), Ni(L-2)(PPh3)]center dot DMSO (3), Ni(L-2)(Imz)] (4), Ni(L-3)(4-pic)] (5) and RNi(L-3))(2)(mu-4,4'-byp)]center dot 2DMSO (6)1 of three selected thiosemicarbazones the 4-(p-X-phenyl)thiosemicarbazones of salicylaldehyde) (H2L1-3) (A, Scheme 1) are described in the present study, differing in the inductive effect of the substituent X (X = F, Br and OCH3), in order to observe its influence, if any, on the redox potentials and biological activity of the complexes. All the synthesized ligands and the metal complexes were successfully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, NMR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The molecular structures of four mononuclear (1-3 and 5) and one dinuclear (6) Ni(II) complex have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of these complexes and their antibacterial activities indicate that compound 4 is the potential lead molecule for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. A novel azo dye containing isoxazole ring and beta-diketone derivative (TIAD) and its two nickel (II) complexes (Ni (II)-ETIAD and Ni (II)-HTIAD) were synthesized in order to obtain a blue-violet light absorption and better thermal stability as a promising organic storage material for next generation of high density digital versatile disc-recordable (HD-DVD-R) systems that uses a high numerical aperture of 0.85 at 405 nm wavelength. Their structures were confirmed on the basis of elemental analysis, MS, FT-IR, UV-Vis and magnetic data. Their solubility in 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoro-1-propanol (TFP) and absorption properties of thin film were measured. The difference of absorption maximum from the complexes to their ligands was discussed. In addition, the TG analysis of the complexes was also determined, and their thermal stability was evaluated. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three new linear trinuclear nickel(II) complexes, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OAc)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (1) (OAc = acetate, CH3COO-), [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OBz)(2)] (2) (OBz=benzoate, PhCOO-) and [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OCn)(2)(CH3CN)(2)] (4) (OCn = cinnamate, PhCH=CHCOO-), H(2)salpen = tetradentate ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The choice of solvent for growing single crystal was made by inspecting the morphology of the initially obtained solids with the help of SEM study. The magnetic properties of a closely related complex, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OPh)(2)(EtOH)] (3) (OPh = phenyl acetate, PhCH2COO-) whose structure and solution properties have been reported recently, has also been studied here. The structural analyses reveal that both phenoxo and carboxylate bridging are present in all the complexes and the three Ni(II) atoms remain in linear disposition. Although the Schiff base ligand and the syn-syn bridging bidentate mode of the carboxylate group remain the same in complexes 1-4, the change of alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylates brings about systematic variations between six- and five-coordination in the geometry of the terminal Ni(II) centres of the trinuclear units. The steric demand as well as hydrophobic nature of the alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylate is found to play a crucial role in the tuning of the geometry. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that complexes 1-4 are antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -3.2(1), -4.6(1). -3.2(1) and -2.8(1) cm(-1) in 1-4, respectively). Calculations of the zero-field splitting parameter indicate that the values of D for complexes 1-4 are in the high range (D = +9.1(2), +14.2(2), +9.8(2) and +8.6(1) cm(-1) for 1-4, respectively). The highest D value of +14.2(2) and +9.8(2) cm(-1) for complexes 2 and 3, respectively, are consistent with the pentacoordinated geometry of the two terminal nickel(II) ions in 2 and one terminal nickel(II) ion in 3. Four new nickel(II) complexes, [Ni2L2(NO2)2]·CH2Cl2·C2H5OH, 2H2O (1), [Ni2L2(DMF)2(m-NO2)]ClO4·DMF (2a), [Ni2L2(DMF)2(m-NO2)]ClO4 (2b) and [Ni3L¢2(m3-NO2)2(CH2Cl2)]n·1.5H2O (3) where HL = 2-[(3-amino-propylimino)-methyl]-phenol, H2L¢ = 2-({3-[(2-hydroxy-benzylidene)-amino]-propylimino}-methyl)-phenol and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, have been synthesized starting with the precursor complex [NiL2]·2H2O, nickel(II) perchlorate and sodium nitrite and characterized structurally and magnetically. The structural analyses reveal that in all the complexes, NiII ions possess a distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 1 is a dinuclear di-m2-phenoxo bridged species in which nitrite ion acts as chelating co-ligand. Complexes 2a and 2b also consist of dinuclear entities, but in these two compounds a cis-(m-nitrito-1kO:2kN) bridge is present in addition to the di-m2-phenoxo bridge. The molecular structures of 2a and 2b are equivalent; they differ only in that 2a contains an additional solvated DMF molecule. Complex 3 is formed by ligand rearrangement and is a one-dimensional polymer in which double phenoxo as well as m-nitrito-1kO:2kN bridged trinuclear units are linked through a very rare m3-nitrito-1kO:2kN:3kO¢ bridge. Analysis of variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data indicates that there is a global weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the nickel(II) ions in four complexes, with exchange parameters J of -5.26, -11.45, -10.66 and -5.99 cm-1 for 1, 2a, 2b and 3, respectively

Five new complexes of general formula: [Ni(RSO(2)N=CS(2))(dppe)], where R = C(6)H(5) (1), 4-ClC(6)H(4) (2), 4-BrC(6)H(4) (3), 4-IC(6)H(4) (4) and dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino) ethane and [Ni(4-IC(6)H(4)SO(2)N=CS(2))(PPh(3))(2)] (5), where PPh3 = triphenylphosphine, were obtained in crystalline form by the reaction of the appropriate potassium N-R-sulfonyldithiocarbimate K(2)(RSO(2)N=CS(2)) and dppe or PPh(3) with nickel(II) chloride in ethanol/water. The elemental analyses and the IR, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR and (31)P NMR spectra are consistent with the formation of the square planar nickel(II) complexes with mixed ligands. All complexes were also characterized by X-ray diffraction techniques and present a distorted cis-NiS(2)P(2) square-planar configuration around the Ni atom. Quantum chemical calculations reproduced the crystallographic structures and are in accord with the spectroscopic data. Rare C-H center dot center dot center dot Ni intramolecular short contact interactions were observed in the complexes 1-5. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Two novel salicylaldimine-based neutral nickel(II) complexes, [(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3))NCH(2-ArC6H3O)]Ni(PPh3)Ph (6, Ar = 2-(OH)C6H4; 8, Ar = 2-OH-3-(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)NCH)C6H3), have been synthesized, and their structures have also been confirmed by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, and H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. An important structural feature of the two complexes is the free hydroxyl group, which allows them to react with silica pretreated with trimethylaluminum under immobilization by the formation of a covalent bond between the neutral nickel(II) complex and the pretreated silica. As active single-component catalysts, the two complexes exhibited high catalytic activities up to 1.14 and 1.47 x 10(6) g PE/mol(Ni)center dot h for ethylene polymerization, respectively, and yielded branched polymers. Requiring no cocatalyst, the two supported catalysts also showed relatively high activities up to 4.0 x 10(5) g PE/mol(Ni)center dot h and produced polyethylenes with high weight-average molecular weights of up to 120 kg/mol and a moderate degree of branching (ca. 13-26 branches per 1000 carbon atoms).
