We propose a wireless medium access control (MAC) protocol that provides static-priority scheduling of messages in a guaranteed collision-free manner. Our protocol supports multiple broadcast domains, resolves the wireless hidden terminal problem and allows for parallel transmissions across a mesh network. Arbitration of messages is achieved without the notion of a master coordinating node, global clock synchronization or out-of-band signaling. The protocol relies on bit-dominance similar to what is used in the CAN bus except that in order to operate on a wireless physical layer, nodes are not required to receive incoming bits while transmitting. The use of bit-dominance efficiently allows for a much larger number of priorities than would be possible using existing wireless solutions. A MAC protocol with these properties enables schedulability analysis of sporadic message streams in wireless multihop networks.

This paper describes JERIM-320, a new 320-bit hash function used for ensuring message integrity and details a comparison with popular hash functions of similar design. JERIM-320 and FORK -256 operate on four parallel lines of message processing while RIPEMD-320 operates on two parallel lines. Popular hash functions like MD5 and SHA-1 use serial successive iteration for designing compression functions and hence are less secure. The parallel branches help JERIM-320 to achieve higher level of security using multiple iterations and processing on the message blocks. The focus of this work is to prove the ability of JERIM 320 in ensuring the integrity of messages to a higher degree to suit the fast growing internet applications

A novel compact RFID tag employing open stubs in a microstrip transmission line is proposed. The prototype of the tag is fabricated on a substrate of dielectric constant 4.4 and loss tangent 0.0018. The tag consists of microstrip open stub resonators and cross polarized transmitting and receiving disc monopole antennas. A prototype of 8 bit data encoded tag is demonstrated in this communication. Method for enhancing the performance of the RFID tag is also proposed. Magnitude or group delay response can be used to decode the tag informations
On-line Gaussian mixture density estimator for adaptive minimum bit-error-rate beamforming receivers
Resumo:
We develop an on-line Gaussian mixture density estimator (OGMDE) in the complex-valued domain to facilitate adaptive minimum bit-error-rate (MBER) beamforming receiver for multiple antenna based space-division multiple access systems. Specifically, the novel OGMDE is proposed to adaptively model the probability density function of the beamformer’s output by tracking the incoming data sample by sample. With the aid of the proposed OGMDE, our adaptive beamformer is capable of updating the beamformer’s weights sample by sample to directly minimize the achievable bit error rate (BER). We show that this OGMDE based MBER beamformer outperforms the existing on-line MBER beamformer, known as the least BER beamformer, in terms of both the convergence speed and the achievable BER.

The Barra do Itapirapua ( BIT) carbonatites in southern Brazil belong to the final stages of the Early Cretaceous alkaline rock - carbonatite magmatism of the Ponta Grossa Arch Province. The BIT complex is a dyke and vein stockwork in which four main carbonatitic phases are recognized, mainly magnesiocarbonatites and ferrocarbonatites. These carbonatites are generally overprinted by pervasive hydrothermal events. The C-O stable isotopic data indicate re-equilibration under hydrothermal conditions at temperatures between 375 and 80 degrees C. Significant amounts of REE fluorocarbonate minerals, relatively Sr- and Th-rich, were deposited. Syntaxy between synchysite-(Ce) and parisite-(Ce) is very common owing to the similarity in structures, with alternating (001) layers of (CeF), (CO3) and (Ca). However, bastnasite-(Ce) occurs as individual crystals, overgrown by the synchysite and parisite polycrystals. Textural and chemical reactions between the REE fluorocarbonates provide insights into the mobility of rare-earth elements during fluid-rock interaction. The BIT complex is considered to be of potential economic interest for production of the rare-earth concentrates.

In this contribution a novel iterative bit- and power allocation (IBPA) approach has been developed when transmitting a given bit/s/Hz data rate over a correlated frequency non-selective (4× 4) Multiple-Input MultipleOutput (MIMO) channel. The iterative resources allocation algorithm developed in this investigation is aimed at the achievement of the minimum bit-error rate (BER) in a correlated MIMO communication system. In order to achieve this goal, the available bits are iteratively allocated in the MIMO active layers which present the minimum transmit power requirement per time slot.

In this paper, we present a novel indexing technique called Multi-scale Similarity Indexing (MSI) to index image's multi-features into a single one-dimensional structure. Both for text and visual feature spaces, the similarity between a point and a local partition's center in individual space is used as the indexing key, where similarity values in different features are distinguished by different scale. Then a single indexing tree can be built on these keys. Based on the property that relevant images have similar similarity values from the center of the same local partition in any feature space, certain number of irrelevant images can be fast pruned based on the triangle inequity on indexing keys. To remove the dimensionality curse existing in high dimensional structure, we propose a new technique called Local Bit Stream (LBS). LBS transforms image's text and visual feature representations into simple, uniform and effective bit stream (BS) representations based on local partition's center. Such BS representations are small in size and fast for comparison since only bit operation are involved. By comparing common bits existing in two BSs, most of irrelevant images can be immediately filtered. To effectively integrate multi-features, we also investigated the following evidence combination techniques-Certainty Factor, Dempster Shafer Theory, Compound Probability, and Linear Combination. Our extensive experiment showed that single one-dimensional index on multi-features improves multi-indices on multi-features greatly. Our LBS method outperforms sequential scan on high dimensional space by an order of magnitude. And Certainty Factor and Dempster Shafer Theory perform best in combining multiple similarities from corresponding multiple features.

In this research the recovery of a DQPSK signal will be demonstrated using a single Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI). By changing the phase delay in one of the arms it will be shown that different delays will produce different output levels. It will also be shown that with a certain level of phase shift the DQPSK signal can be converted into four different equally spaced optical power levels. With each decoded level representing one of the four possible bit permutations. By using this additional phase shift in one of the arms the number of MZIs required for decoding can be reduced from two to one.

The rapidly increasing demand for cellular telephony is placing greater demand on the limited bandwidth resources available. This research is concerned with techniques which enhance the capacity of a Direct-Sequence Code-Division-Multiple-Access (DS-CDMA) mobile telephone network. The capacity of both Private Mobile Radio (PMR) and cellular networks are derived and the many techniques which are currently available are reviewed. Areas which may be further investigated are identified. One technique which is developed is the sectorisation of a cell into toroidal rings. This is shown to provide an increased system capacity when the cell is split into these concentric rings and this is compared with cell clustering and other sectorisation schemes. Another technique for increasing the capacity is achieved by adding to the amount of inherent randomness within the transmitted signal so that the system is better able to extract the wanted signal. A system model has been produced for a cellular DS-CDMA network and the results are presented for two possible strategies. One of these strategies is the variation of the chip duration over a signal bit period. Several different variation functions are tried and a sinusoidal function is shown to provide the greatest increase in the maximum number of system users for any given signal-to-noise ratio. The other strategy considered is the use of additive amplitude modulation together with data/chip phase-shift-keying. The amplitude variations are determined by a sparse code so that the average system power is held near its nominal level. This strategy is shown to provide no further capacity since the system is sensitive to amplitude variations. When both strategies are employed, however, the sensitivity to amplitude variations is shown to reduce, thus indicating that the first strategy both increases the capacity and the ability to handle fluctuations in the received signal power.

In this paper, we propose a resource allocation scheme to minimize transmit power for multicast orthogonal frequency division multiple access systems. The proposed scheme allows users to have different symbol error rate (SER) across subcarriers and guarantees an average bit error rate and transmission rate for all users. We first provide an algorithm to determine the optimal bits and target SER on subcarriers. Because the worst-case complexity of the optimal algorithm is exponential, we further propose a suboptimal algorithm that separately assigns bit and adjusts SER with a lower complexity. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the performance of multicast orthogonal frequency division multiple access systems and that the performance of the suboptimal algorithm is close to that of the optimal one. Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been proved to be a promising technology that enables the transmission of higher data rate. Multicarrier Code-Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) is a transmission technique which combines the advantages of both OFDM and Code-Division Multiplexing Access (CDMA), so as to allow high transmission rates over severe time-dispersive multi-path channels without the need of a complex receiver implementation. Also MC-CDMA exploits frequency diversity via the different subcarriers, and therefore allows the high code rates systems to achieve good Bit Error Rate (BER) performances. Furthermore, the spreading in the frequency domain makes the time synchronization requirement much lower than traditional direct sequence CDMA schemes. There are still some problems when we use MC-CDMA. One is the high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of the transmit signal. High PAPR leads to nonlinear distortion of the amplifier and results in inter-carrier self-interference plus out-of-band radiation. On the other hand, suppressing the Multiple Access Interference (MAI) is another crucial problem in the MC-CDMA system. Imperfect cross-correlation characteristics of the spreading codes and the multipath fading destroy the orthogonality among the users, and then cause MAI, which produces serious BER degradation in the system. Moreover, in uplink system the received signals at a base station are always asynchronous. This also destroys the orthogonality among the users, and hence, generates MAI which degrades the system performance. Besides those two problems, the interference should always be considered seriously for any communication system. In this dissertation, we design a novel MC-CDMA system, which has low PAPR and mitigated MAI. The new Semi-blind channel estimation and multi-user data detection based on Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) have been applied in the system. The Low Density Parity Codes (LDPC) has also been introduced into the system to improve the performance. Different interference models are analyzed in multi-carrier communication systems and then the effective interference suppression for MC-CDMA systems is employed in this dissertation. The experimental results indicate that our system not only significantly reduces the PAPR and MAI but also effectively suppresses the outside interference with low complexity. Finally, we present a practical cognitive application of the proposed system over the software defined radio platform.

Reconstructing past ocean salinity is important for assessing paleoceanographic change and therefore past climatic dynamics. Commonly, sea water salinity reconstruction is based on foraminifera oxygen isotope ratio values combined with sea surface temperature reconstruction. However, the approach relies on multiple proxies, resulting in relatively large uncertainty and, consequently, relatively low accuracy of salinity estimates. An alternative tool for past ocean salinity reconstruction is the hydrogen isotope composition of long chain (C37) alkenones (dDalkenone). Here, we applied dDalkenone to a 39 ka long coastal sediment record from the Eastern South African continental shelf in the Mozambique Channel, close to the Zambezi River mouth. Despite changes in global sea water dD related to glacial - interglacial ice volume effects, no clear changes were observed in the dDalkenone record throughout the entire 39 ka. The BIT index record from the same core showed high BIT values during the glacial and low values during the Holocene. This indicates a more pronounced freshwater influence at the core location during the glacial, resulting in alkenones depleted in deuterium during that time and, thereby, explains the lack of a clear glacial-interglacial alkenone dD shift. Correlation between the BIT index and dDalkenone during the glacial period suggests that increased continental runoff potentially changed the growth conditions of the alkenone producing haptophytes, promoting coastal haptophyte species with generally more enriched dDalkenone values. We therefore suggest that the application of dDalkenone for reconstructing past salinity in coastal settings may be complicated by changes in the alkenone producing haptophyte community.

We study a multiuser multicarrier downlink communication system in which the base station (BS) employs a large number of antennas. By assuming frequency-division duplex operation, we provide a beam domain channel model as the number of BS antennas grows asymptotically large. With this model, we first derive a closed-form upper bound on the achievable ergodic sum-rate before developing necessary conditions to asymptotically maximize the upper bound, with only statistical channel state information at the BS. Inspired by these conditions, we propose a beam division multiple access (BDMA) transmission scheme, where the BS communicates with users via different beams. For BDMA transmission, we design user scheduling to select users within non-overlapping beams, work out an optimal pilot design under a minimum mean square error criterion, and provide optimal pilot sequences by utilizing the Zadoff-Chu sequences. The proposed BDMA scheme reduces significantly the pilot overhead, as well as, the processing complexity at transceivers. Simulations demonstrate the high spectral efficiency of BDMA transmission and the advantages in the bit error rate performance of the proposed pilot sequences.
