The petrography, mineralogy and geochemistry of volcanic and subvolcanic rocks in CRP-3 core have been examined in detail in order to characterise and to compare them with volcanic and subvolcanic rocks cropping out in the Victoria Land area, and to define the clast provenance or to establish possible volcanic activity coeval with deposition. Clasts with sizes ranging from granule to boulder show geochemical and mineralogical features comparable with those of Ferrar Supergroup rocks. They display a subalkaline affinity and compositions ranging from basalts to dacite. Three different petrographic groups with distinct textural and grain size features (subophitic, intergranular-intersertal, and glassy-hyalopilitic) are recognised and are related to the emplacement/cooling mechanism. In the sand to silt fraction, the few glass shards that have been recognised are strongly altered: however chemical analyses show they have subalkalic magmatic affinity. Mineral compositions of the abundant free clinopyroxene grains found in the core, are less affected by alteration processes, and indicate an origin from subalkaline magmas. This excludes the presence, during the deposition of CRP-3 rocks of alkaline volcanic activity comparable with the McMurdo Volcanic Group. Strong alteration of the magmatic body intruded the Beacon sandstones obliterates the original mineral assemblage. Geochemical investigations confirm that intrusion is part of the Ferar Large Igneous Province.

Igneous rock units were encountered at four of the five sites drilled on Leg 30 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. These units uncluded a diabase sill at Site 285, a basalt underlain by a gabbro at 286, two basalt flows at 287, and a basalt flow at 289. Site 285 is located approximately in the center of the South Fiji Basin, Site 286 is adjacent to a filled portion of the New Hebrides Trench, Site 287 is adjacent to a basement high in the Coral Sea Basin, and Sites 288 and 289 are located on the Ontong-Java Plateau north of the Solomon Islands (Figure 1). Figure 2 presents generalized lithologic columns for the igneous rock units found at these sites. When a unit number is given, e.g., Site 286, Unit 4 basalt, this number conforms with the unit number assigned to it in the overall stratigraphic sequence of that hole as defined in the individual Site Reports in this volume. Unless otherwise stated, depths are given as measured from the sediment-igneous rock contact rather than the mudline.

Continuous black carbon (BC) observations were conducted from 1999 through 2009 by an Aethalometer (AE10) and from 2006 through 2011 by a Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP) at Neumayer Station (NM) under stringent contamination control. Considering the respective observation period, BC concentrations measured by the MAAP were somewhat higher (median ± standard deviation: 2.1 ± 2.0 ng/m**3) compared to the AE10 results (1.6 ± 2.1 ng/m**3). Neither for the AE10 nor for the MAAP data set a significant long-term trend could be detected. Consistently a pronounced seasonality was observed with both instruments showing a primary annual maximum between October and November and a minimum in April with a maximum/minimum ratio of 4.5/1.6 = 3.8 and 2.7/0.64 = 4.2 for the MAAP and AE10 data, respectively. Occasionally a secondary summer maximum in January/February was visible. With the aim to assess the impact of BC on optical properties of the aerosol at NM, we evaluated the BC data along with particle scattering coefficients measured by an integrating nephelometer. We found the mean single scattering albedo of w550 = 0.992 ± 0.0090 (median: 0.994) at a wavelength of 550 nm with a range of values from 0.95 to 1.0.

During Leg 124, off the Philippines, volcanic material was recovered in deep-sea sediments dating from the late Oligocene in the Celebes Sea Basin, and from the early Miocene in the Sulu Sea Basin. Chemical and petrological studies of fallout ash deposits are used to characterize volcanic pulses and to determine their possible origin. All of the glass and mineral compositions belong to medium-K and high-K calc-alkaline arc-related magmatic suites including high-Al basalts, pyroxene-hornblende andesites, dacites, and rhyolites. Late Oligocene and early Miocene products may have originated from the Sunda arc or from the Sabah-Zamboanga old Sulu arc. Late early Miocene Sulu Sea tuffs originated from the Cagayan arc, whereas early late Miocene fallout ashes are attributed to the Sulu arc. A complex magmatic production is distinguished in the Plio-Quaternary with three sequences of basic to acidic lava suites. Early Pliocene strata registered an important activity in both Celebes Sea and Sulu Sea areas, from the newly born Sangihe arc (low-alumina andesite series) and from the Sulu, Zamboanga, and Negros arcs (high-alumina basalt series and high-K andesite series). In the late Pliocene and the early Pleistocene, renewal of activity affects the Sangihe-Cotobato arc as well as the Sulu and Negros arcs (same magmatic distinctions). The last volcanic pulse took place in the late Pleistocene with revival of all the present arc systems.

The development of an orbitally tuned time scale for the ODP leg 138 sites provides biostratigraphers a very high resolution chronostratigraphic framework. With this framework we are better able to define which of the first and last appearances of species appear to be synchronous. In addition, the geographic distribution of sites provides the means with which the detailed spatial patterns of invasion of new species and the extinction of older species can be mapped. These maps not only provide information on the process of evolution, migration, and extinction, they can also be related to water mass distributions and near-surface circulation of the ocean. Of 39 radiolarian events studied at 11 sites in the eastern equatorial Pacific, 28 were found to have a minimum range in their estimated age that exceeded 0.15 m.y. The temporal pattern of first and last appearances of these diachronous events have coherent spatial patterns that indicate shifts in the areas of high oceanographic gradients over the past 10 Ma. These changes in the locations of high gradient regions suggest that the South Equatorial Current (SEC) was north of its present position prior to approximately 7 Ma. There was a southward shift in the northern boundary of this current between approximately 6 and 7 Ma, and the development of a relatively strong gradient between the northeastern and northwestern sites. Between approximately 3.7 and 3.4 Ma, there was a very slight northward shift in the northern boundary of the SEC and the steep gradients between the northeastern and northwestern sites may have disappeared. This change is thought to be associated with the closing of the Isthmus of Panama. The temporal-spatial patterns of diachronous events younger than 3.4 Ma are consistent with patterns of circulation in the modern ocean.

Three sites were drilled in the Izu-Bonin forearc basin during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 126. High-quality formation microscanner (FMS) data from two of the sites provide images of part of a thick, volcaniclastic, middle to upper Oligocene, basin-plain turbidite succession. The FMS images were used to construct bed-by-bed sedimentary sections for the depth intervals 2232-2441 m below rig floor (mbrf) in Hole 792E, and 4023-4330 mbrf in Hole 793B. Beds vary in thickness from those that are near or below the resolution of the FMS tool (2.5 cm) to those that are 10-15 m thick. The bed thicknesses are distributed according to a power law with an exponent of about 1.0. There are no obvious upward thickening or thinning sequences in the bed-by-bed sections. Spaced packets of thick and very thick beds may be a response to (1) low stands of global sea level, particularly at 30 Ma, (2) periods of increased tectonic uplift, or (3) periods of more intense volcanism. Graded sandstones, most pebbly sandstones, and graded to graded-stratified conglomerates were deposited by turbidity currents. The very thick, mainly structureless beds of sandstone, pebbly sandstone, and pebble conglomerate are interpreted as sandy debris-flow deposits. Many of the sediment gravity flows may have been triggered by earthquakes. Long recurrence intervals of 0.3-1 m.y. for the very thickest beds are consistent with triggering by large-magnitude earthquakes (M = 9) with epicenters approximately 10-50 km away from large, unstable accumulations of volcaniclastic sand and ash on the flanks of arc volcanoes. Paleocurrents were obtained from the grain fabric of six thicker sandstone beds, and ripple migration directions in about 40 thinner beds; orientations were constrained by the FMS images. The data from ripples are very scattered and cannot be used to specify source positions. They do, however, indicate that the paleoenvironment was a basin plain where weaker currents were free to follow a broad range of flow paths. The data from sandstone fabric are more reliable and indicate that turbidity currents flowed toward 150? during the time period from 28.9 to 27.3 Ma. This direction is essentially along the axis of the forearc basin, from north to south, with a small component of flow away from the western margin of the basin.

Foraminifera shells from modern sediments document the hydrography of the coastal upwelling region off Northwest-Africa (12-35° N) through the stable isotopic composition of their shells. Oxygen isotopes in planktonic foraminifers reflect sea surface temperatures (SST) during the main growing season of the differnt species: Globigerinoides ruber (pink and white) and G. sacculifer delineate the temperatures of the summer, Globorotalia inflata and Pulleniatina obliquiloculata those of the winter. Oxygen isotopes on Globigerina bulloides document temperature ranges of the upwelling seasons. d18O values in planktonic foraminifera from plankton hauls resemble those from the surface sediment samples, if the time of the plankton collection is identical with that of the main growing season of the species. The combined isotopic record of G. ruber (white) and G. inflata clearly reveals the latitudinal variations of the annual mean SST. The deviation of the d18O values from both species from their common mean is a scale for the seasonality, i.e. the maximum temperature range within one year. Thus in the summer upwelling region (north of 25° N) seasonality is relatively low, while it becomes high in the winter upwelling region south of 20° N. Furthermore, the winter upwelling region is characterized by relatively high d18O values - indicating low temperatures - in G. bulloides, the region of summer upwelling by relatively low d180 values compared with the constructed annual mean SST. Generally, carbon isotopes from the plankton hauls coincide with those from sediment surface samples. The enrichment of 13C isotopes in foraminifers from areas with high primary production can be caused by the removal of 12C from the total dissolved inorganic carbon during phytoplankton blooms. It is found that carbon isotopes from plankton hauls off Northwest-Africa are relatively enriched in 13C compared with samples from the western Atlantic Ocean. Also shells of G. ruber (pink and white) from upwelling regions are enriched in the heavier isotope compared with regions without upwelling. In the sediment, the enrichement of 13C due to high primary production can only be seen in G. bulloides from the high fertile upwelling region south of 20° N. North of this latitude values are relatively low. An enrichment of 12C is observed in shells of G. ruber (pink), G. inflata and P. obliquiloculata from summer-winter- and perennial upwelling regions respectively. Northern water masses can be distinguished from their southern counterparts by relatively high oxygen and carbon values in the "living" (=stained) benthic foraminifera Uvigerina sp. and Hoeglundina elegans. A tongue of the Mediterranean Outflow water can be identified far to the south (20° N) by 13C-enriched shells of these benthic foraminifera. A zone of erosion (15-25° N, 300-600 m) with a subrecent sediment surface can be mapped with the help of oxygen isotopes in "dead" benthic specimens. Comparison of d18O values in aragonitic and calcitic benthic foraminifers does not show a differential influence of temperature on the isotopic composition in the carbonate. However, carbon isotopes reflect slightly differences under the influence of temperature.

During Leg 112 off Peru, volcanic material was recorded from middle Eocene to Holocene time. The petrographical and chemical composition of tephra is consistent with an origin from the Andean volcanic arc. The amount and thickness of ash layers provide valuable evidence for explosive volcanic episodicity. The first indication of volcanism was found in mid-Eocene sediments. Three volcanic pulses date from Miocene time. Two intense episodes took place in upper Pliocene and from Pleistocene to Holocene time. Pliocene-Pleistocene tephra are restricted to the southern upper-slope and shelf sites, indicating a removal of the volcanic arc and the extinction of the northern Peru volcanoes. The Cenozoic tectonic phases of the Andean margin may be correlated with the Leg 112 volcanic records. The explosive supply of evolved magmatic products succeeded the Incaic and Quechua tectonic phases. Acidic glasses are related to both andesitic and shoshonitic series. The calc-alkaline factor (CAF) of these glasses exhibited moderate magmatic variations during middle and late Miocene time. A dramatic change occurred during the Pliocene-Pleistocene, reflected in a strong CAF increase and the appearance of potassium-rich evolved shoshonitic glasses. This took place when the Nazca Ridge subduction began. This change in the magma genesis and/or differentiation conditions is probably related to thickening of the upper continental plate and to a new configuration of the Benioff Zone.

A tephrochronology of the past 5 Ma is constructed with ash layers recovered from Neogene sediments during drilling at ODP Leg 121 Site 758 on northern Ninetyeast Ridge. The several hundred tephra layers observed in the first 80 m of cores range in thickness from a few millimeters to 34 cm. Seventeen tephra layers, at least 1 cm thick, were sampled and analyzed for major elements. Relative ages for the ash layers are estimated from the paleomagnetic and d18O chronostratigraphy. The ash layers comprise about 1.7% by volume of the sediments recovered in the first 72 m. The median grain size of the ashes is about 75 ?m, with a maximum of 150 ?m. The ash consists of rhyolitic bubble junction and pumice glass shards. Blocky and platy shards are in even proportion (10%-30%) and are dominated by bubble wall shards (70%-90%). The crystal content of the layers is always less than 2%, with Plagioclase and alkali feldspar present in nearly every layer. Biotite was observed only in the thickest layers. The major element compositions of glass and feldspar reflect fractionation trends. Three groupings of ash layers suggest different provenances with distinct magmatic systems. Dating by d18O and paleomagnetic reversals suggests major marine ash-layer-producing eruptions (marine tephra layers > 1 cm in thickness) occur roughly every approximately 414,000 yr. This value correlates well with landbased studies and dates of Pleistocene Sumatran tuffs (average 375,000-yr eruptive interval). Residence times of the magmatic systems defined by geochemical trends are 1.583, 2.524, and 1.399 Ma. The longest time interval starts with the least differentiated magma. The Sunda Arc, specifically Sumatra, is inferred to be the source region for the ashes. Four of the youngest five ash layers recovered correlate in time and in major element chemistry to ashes observed on land at the Toba caldera.

Refractive index and chemical composition were determined for glass shards contained in more than 100 tephra layers in DSDP Leg 58 sediment cores collected in the Shikoku Basin, North Philippine Sea. The refractive index is consistent with chemical composition. Refractive index and total iron show a linear relationship. Tephra in Pleistocene and Pliocene sediments is mostly rhyolitic and dacitic (non-alkali), whereas tephra in the Miocene shows wide composition variations in the eastern part of the basin. Basaltic tephra is recognized in Miocene sediments at Sites 443 and 444, but not at Site 442, west of the other two sites. This indicates that the basaltic tephra came from eruption relatively close to those drill sites (perhaps the Kinan Seamounts and the Shichito-Iwo Jima volcanic arc), although the exact source has not been identified.

Cold-water corals (CWC) are frequently reported from deep sites with locally accelerated currents that enhance seabed food particle supply. Moreover, zooplankton likely account for ecologically important prey items, but their contribution to CWC diet remains unquantified. We investigated the benthic food web structure of the recently discovered Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) CWC province (300 to 1100 m depth) located in the oligotrophic northern Ionian Sea. We analyzed stable isotopes (delta13C and delta15N) of the main consumers (including ubiquitous CWC species) exhibiting different feeding strategies, zooplankton, suspended particulate organic matter (POM) and sedimented organic matter (SOM). Zooplankton and POM were collected 3 m above the coral colonies in order to assess their relative contributions to CWC diet. The delta15N of the scleractinians Desmophyllum dianthus, Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa and the gorgonian Paramuricea cf. macrospinawere consistent with a diet mainly composed of zooplankton. The antipatharian Leiopathes glaberrima was more 15N- depletedthan other cnidarians, suggesting a lower contribution of zooplankton to its diet. Our delta13C data clearly indicate that the benthic food web of SML is exclusively fuelled by carbon of phytoplanktonic origin. Nevertheless, consumers feeding at the water sediment interface were more 13C-enriched than consumers feeding above the bottom (i.e. living corals and their epifauna). This pattern suggests that carbon is assimilated via 2 trophic pathways: relatively fresh phytoplanktonic production for 13C-depleted consumers and more decayed organic matter for 13C-enriched consumers. When the delta13C values of consumers were corrected for the influence of lipids (which are significantly 13C-depleted relative to other tissue components), our conclusions remained unchanged, except in the case of L. glaberrima which could assimilate a mixture of zooplankton and resuspended decayed organic matter.

Sedimentary sections recovered from the Tonga platform and forearc during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 135 provide a record of the sedimentary evolution of the active margin of the Indo-Australian Plate from late Eocene time to the Present. Facies analyses of the sediments, coupled with interpretations of downhole Formation MicroScanner logs, allow the complete sedimentary and subsidence history of each site to be reconstructed. After taking into account the water depths in which the sediments were deposited and their subsequent compaction, the forearc region of the Tofua Arc (Site 841) can be seen to have experienced an initial period of tectonic subsidence dating from 35.5 Ma. Subsidence has probably been gradual since that time, with possible phases of accelerated subsidence, starting at 16.2 and 10.0 Ma. The Tonga Platform (Site 840) records only the last 7.0 Ma of arc evolution. However, the increased accuracy of paleowater depth determinations possible with shallow-water platform sediments allows the resolution of a distinct increase in subsidence rates at 5.30 Ma. Thus, sedimentology and subsidence analyses show the existence of at least two, and possibly four, separate subsidence events in the forearc region. Subsidence dating from 35.5 Ma is linked to rifting of the South Fiji Basin. Any subsidence dating from 16.2 Ma at Site 841 does not correlate with another known tectonic event and is perhaps linked to localized extensional faulting related to slab roll back during steady-state subduction. Subsidence from 10.0 Ma coincides with the breakup of the early Tertiary Vitiaz Arc because of the subduction polarity reversal in the New Hebrides and the subsequent readjustment of the plate boundary geometry. More recently, rapid subsidence and deposition of a upward-fining cycle from 5.30 Ma to the Present at Site 840 is thought to relate to rifting of the Lau Basin. Sedimentation is principally controlled by tectonic activity, with variations in eustatic sea level playing a significant, but subordinate role. Subduction of the Louisville Seamount Chain seems to have disrupted the forearc region locally, although it had only a modest effect on the subsidence history and sedimentation of the Tonga Platform as a whole.

New heat-flow values were obtained in the central Peru Trench area during site surveys and drilling of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 112 by measuring temperatures with ordinary surface heat-flow probes and in the drill holes and by estimating from bottom-simulating reflectors resulting from gas hydrates. The values determined by these methods are consistent with each other within the limits of error. When combined with existing data, heat-flow distribution from the trench to the coast was delineated. Heat flow is lower than 40 mW/m**2 at the bottom of the trench and 40 to 50 mW/m**2 on the landward slope. The low heat flow at the trench bottom can be explained partly by a high sedimentation rate. Heat flow is variable about where the Mendana Fracture Zone meets the trench. This low heat flow might result from hydrothermal circulation in the fracture zone, which some scientists believe is a new propagating rift. On the landward slope, no significant difference in heat flow is recognized between the northern side and the southern side of the fracture zone, in spite of differences in the age of the subducting plate and the tectonic history. Heat flow on the landward slope may be slightly higher than that in most other subduction zones.

The Sahara Desert is the largest source of mineral dust in the world. Emissions of African dust increased sharply in the early 1970s, a change that has been attributed mainly to drought in the Sahara/Sahel region caused by changes in the global distribution of sea surface temperature. The human contribution to land degradation and dust mobilization in this region remains poorly understood, owing to the paucity of data that would allow the identification of long-term trends in desertification. Direct measurements of airborne African dust concentrations only became available in the mid-1960s from a station on Barbados and subsequently from satellite imagery since the late 1970s: they do not cover the onset of commercial agriculture in the Sahel region ~170 years ago. Here we construct a 3,200-year record of dust deposition off northwest Africa by investigating the chemistry and grain-size distribution of terrigenous sediments deposited at a marine site located directly under the West African dust plume. With the help of our dust record and a proxy record for West African precipitation we find that, on the century scale, dust deposition is related to precipitation in tropical West Africa until the seventeenth century. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, a sharp increase in dust deposition parallels the advent of commercial agriculture in the Sahel region. Our findings suggest that human-induced dust emissions from the Sahel region have contributed to the atmospheric dust load for about 200 years.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da temperatura sobre a germinação e o armazenamento de sementes de Erythroxylum ligustrinum DC. As sementes foram colocadas germinar caixas de plásticas sobre duas folhas de papel, umedecidas com Nistatina 0, 2%, mantidas em germinadores nas temperaturas constantes de 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 e 45ºC e com fotoperíodo de 12 horas. Para o armazenamento, as sementes foram colocadas em sacos de papel, mantidos à temperatura ambiente e em geladeira. em seguida, mensalmente, foi avaliada a germinação das sementes. A temperatura mínima, a faixa de temperatura ideal e a temperatura máxima para germinação de sementes de coca estão entre 10 e 15ºC, 25 e 30ºC e 40 e 45ºC, respectivamente. O armazenamento de sementes coca por longo período é inviável em embalagens de papel na geladeira (10ºC ± 2) e em temperatura ambiente (27ºC ± 5).
