The mixed oxides LaNiO3, La0.1Sr0.9NiO3, La2NiO4 and LaSrNiO4 with perovskite (ABO(3)) and related(A(2)BO(4)) structures were prepared and the adsorption property for NO and the catalytic activity for NO decomposition over these oxidse were also tested. The catalysts were characterized by means of BET surface measurement, chemical analysis, NO-TPD etc.. It was shown that the adsorption amount of NO is correlated with the concentration of oxygen vacancy formed and the adsorption type and strength of NO are related to the valence of metallic ion. Generally there are three kinds of adsorption species, NO-, NO+ and NO on the mixed oxides, among them the negative adsorpion species (NO-) are active for NO decomposition. The weaker the adsorption of oxygen on the catalyst is, the faster the mobility of oxygen is and the easier the redox process takes place in reproducing the active sites in which the oxygen species (O-, O2-) would participate.

The rare earth complex oxides with different types have been synthesized. Their structures and electric properties have been investigated. According to our experimental results, the effects of the outest shell electronic configuration, electron spin state, electron transport path and formation of cluster on the electric properties of rare earth complex oxides have been summarized. When the electrons in the outest shell of the central metallic ion are unpair, and the outest shell is not half-filled, the electric conductibilities of these compounds are better, If there is a -M-X-M-X- or -M-M-M- (the distances between two atoms <0.31 nm) continuous electron transport path, and the electron configurations of the central metallic ion conform to the above condition, then the electric conductibilities are good, The isolate cluster can not become the continuous electron transport path, therefore, the formation of the isolate cluster will reduce the conductibility.

In this work is the addition of a metallic ion, of the metal Manganese, in a clay of Rio Grande do Norte state for structural ceramics use, the objective this study was to assess the evolution of ceramic properties. The clay was characterized by Chemical and Thermal analysis and Xray difraction. The metallic ion was added in the clay as aqueous solutions at concentrations of 100, 150 and 200 mg / L. The molded by extrusion and the burned were temperatures at 850, 950, 1050 and 1150 º C. Was made Chemical Analysis and investigated the following parameters environmental and ceramic: Solubility, Colour, Linear Retraction (%), Water Absorption (%), Gresification Curves, Apparent Porosity (%), Apparent Specific Mass (g/cm3) and Flexion Rupture Module (kgf/cm2). The results showed that increasing the concentration of metallic ion, properties such as Apparent Porosity (%), Water Absorption (%) decreases and the Flexion Rupture Module (kgf/cm2) increases with increasing temperature independent of the concentration of the ion. The gresification curves showed that the optimum firing temperatures were in the range between 950 and 1050 ° C. The evaluation of the properties showed that the ceramic material can be studied its use in solid brick and ceramic materials with structural function of filling. The results of solubility showed that the addition of ion offers no risk to the environment

Lignins extracted from sugar cane bagasse using different alcohols in the organosolv-CO(2) supercritical pulping process have been applied in the fabrication of ultrathin films through the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Langmuir films were characterized by surface pressure versus mean molecular area (Pi-A) isotherms to exploit the sensitivity of nanostructured lignin films to metallic ions (Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Pb(2+)). The Pi-A isotherms were shifted to larger molecular areas when heavy metal ions are present into the subphase, which might be related to electrostatic repulsions between metallic ions entrapped within the lignin molecular structure. Taking the advantage of metal incorporation, Langmuir monolayers were transferred onto solid substrates forming Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films to be used as a transducer in an "electronic tongue" system to detect Cu(2+) in aqueous solution below threshold standard established by the Brazilian regulation. Both techniques impedance spectroscopy and electrochemistry have been used in these experiments. Complementary, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy recorded for LB films before and after soaking into Cu(2+) aqueous solution revealed an interaction between the lignin phenyl groups and the metallic ion. Cellulose acetate polymeric membranes had been prepared by a procedure of two steps, combining the method of phase inversion and the technique of hydrolysis-deposition. The first step was the preparation of the membrane, and together was organomodified with tetraethylortosilicate and 3-aminopropyltrietoxysilane. Parameters that exert influence in the complexation of the metallic ion, as pH, time of complexation, metal concentration, had been studied in laboratory using tests of metal removal. The membranes had presented resistance mechanics and reactivity to cations, being able to be an alternative for the removal, daily pay-concentration or in the study of the lability of metals complexed.

This paper describes the preparation of acid carboxymethylcellulose (CMCH), and the results of a study on the adsorption and preconcentration (using batch and flow-through column methods) of Cd(II), Cu(II), Cr(III), Fe(III), Ni(II) and Zn(II) in ethanol medium. The adsorption capacities for each metallic ion were (in mmol g(-1)) Cd(II) = 0.92; Cu(II) = 1.45; Cr(III) = 1.70; Fe(III) = 1.60; Ni(II) = 1.30; and Zn(II) = 1.10. By means of the flow-through method, a recovery of ca. 100% of the metallic ions adsorbed in a column packed with 2 g of CMCH was found when 5.0 mL of 1.0 mol L-1 hydrochloric acid were used as eluent. An enrichment factor of 20 (100 mt solution containing 50 mu g L-1 of the metallic ions, concentrated to 5.0 mt) was obtained by this preconcentration procedure. The sorption-desorption procedure applied allowed the development of a preconcentration and Flame AAS quantification method of metallic ions in fuel ethanol at trace levels.

Alumina/alumina wear couple can lower the wear rates and thus metallic ion releasing on load bearing metallic implant materials. However, the low fracture toughness of ceramics is still a major concern. Therefore, the present study aims to process and to triboelectrochemically characterise the 5 and 10 vol.-%Al2O3 reinforced CoCrMo matrix composites. Corrosion and tribocorrosion behaviour of the composites were investigated in 8 g L−1 NaCl solution at body temperature. Corroded and worn surfaces were investigated by a field emission gun scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. After tribocorrosion experiments, wear rates were calculated using a profilometer. Results suggest that Al2O3 particle addition decreased the tendency of CoCrMo alloy to corrosion under both static and tribocorrosion conditions. However, no significant influence on the corrosion and wear rates was observed in composites mainly due to increased porosity and insufficient matrix/reinforcement bonding.

We demonstrate that irradiation may enhance the plasticity in metallic glasses by increasing the free-volume content via micropillar compression experiments on an ion-irradiated bulk metallic glass (BMG). Results show that irradiation decreases the flow stress and enhances the shear band formation by lowering the magnitude of stress serrations in plastic flow regime. These results highlight that amorphous alloys can mitigate the deleterious affects of severe ion irradiation as compared to their crystalline counterparts. (C) 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. Nanoindentation experiments were conducted on a Ni+ ion-irradiated Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG). The irradiation was carried out using 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 MeV ions and a flux of similar to 10(16) ions/cm(2). Post mortem imaging of the indents reveals a transition in the deformation mechanism of the irradiated regions from heterogeneous shear banding to homogeneous flow. Additionally, the load-displacement curves exhibit a transition from serrated to continuous flow with increasing severity of irradiation damage. The stress-strain response obtained from micro-pillar compression experiments complements the indentation response exhibiting a decrease in the flow stress and an `apparent' strain hardening at the lowest irradiation damage investigated, which is not observed in the as-cast alloy. A method of injecting metallic elements into an electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) is described. The method is advantageous over the conventional coaxial and pulsed injection methods in two ways: (a) complicated switching of injection and extraction beams can be avoided when extracting beams of highly charged ions from the EBIT and (b) a beam of stable intensity can be achieved. This method may be applicable to any metallic elements or metallic compounds that have vapor pressures of similar to 0.1 Pa at a temperature lower than 1900 degrees C. We have employed this method for the extraction of highly charged ions of Bi, Er, Fe, and Ho. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper we briefly discuss the problem of simulating non-adiabatic processes in systems that are usefully modelled using molecular dynamics. In particular we address the problems associated with metals, and describe two methods that can be applied: the Ehrenfest approximation and correlated electron-ion dynamics (CEID). The Ehrenfest approximation is used to successfully describe the friction force experienced by an energetic particle passing through a crystal, but is unable to describe the heating of a wire by an electric current. CEID restores the proper heating.

Swift heavy ion induced changes in microstructure and surface morphology of vapor deposited Fe–Ni based metallic glass thin films have been investigated by using atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Ion beam irradiation was carried out at room temperature with 103 MeV Au9+ beam with fluences ranging from 3 1011 to 3 1013 ions/cm2. The atomic force microscopy images were subjected to power spectral density analysis and roughness analysis using an image analysis software. Clusters were found in the image of as-deposited samples, which indicates that the film growth is dominated by the island growth mode. As-deposited films were amorphous as evidenced from X-ray diffraction; however, high resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed a short range atomic order in the samples with crystallites of size around 3 nm embedded in an amorphous matrix. X-ray diffraction pattern of the as-deposited films after irradiation does not show any appreciable changes, indicating that the passage of swift heavy ions stabilizes the short range atomic ordering, or even creates further amorphization. The crystallinity of the as-deposited Fe–Ni based films was improved by thermal annealing, and diffraction results indicated that ion beam irradiation on annealed samples results in grain fragmentation. On bombarding annealed films, the surface roughness of the films decreased initially, then, at higher fluences it increased. The observed change in surface morphology of the irradiated films is attributed to the interplay between ion induced sputtering, volume diffusion and surface diffusion
