This paper analyzes how machine translation has changed the way translation is conceived and practiced in the information age. From a brief review of the early designs of machine translation programs, I discuss the changes implemented in the past decades in these systems to combine mechanical processing and the accessory work by the translator.

This work aims to present the electrical behavior of two mechanical processing equipment of wood, the saw vertical tape and the wood chipper. Their characteristics in real operating conditions and the electrical behavior of devices in terms of energy efficiency is shown through the study of individual power factor are presented in this study. It was observed that both devices operate unloaded for some intervals of time and this contributes to a low power factor. It is concluded that improved production planning and better preparation of the operators in the operations of sawing wood, in order to improve the power factor in sawmills is necessary.

Thermoplastic starch (TPS) was modified with ascorbic acid and citric acid by melt processing of native starch with glycerol as plasticizer in an intensive batch mixer at 160 degrees C. It was found that the molar mass decreases with acid content and processing time causing the reduction in melting temperature (T(m)). As observed by the results of X-ray diffraction and DSC measurements, crystallinity was not changed by the reaction with organic acids. T(m) depression with falling molar mass was interpreted on the basis of the effect of concentration of end-chain units, which act as diluents. FTIR did not show any appreciable change in starch chemical compositions, leading to the conclusion that the main changes observed were produced by the variation in molar mass of the material. We demonstrated that it is possible to decrease melt viscosity without the need for more plasticizer thus avoiding side-effects such as an increase in water affinity or relevant changes in the dynamic mechanical properties. We assess the effects of chemical processing, ethylene oxide sterilization, and threading on bone surface and mechanical properties of bovine undecalcified bone screws. In addition, we evaluate the possibility of manufacturing bone screws with predefined dimensions. Scanning electronic microscopic images show that chemical processing and ethylene oxide treatment causes collagen fiber amalgamation on the bone surface. Processed screws hold higher ultimate loads under bending and torsion than the in natura bone group, with no change in pull-out strength between groups. Threading significantly reduces deformation and bone strength under torsion. Metrological data demonstrate the possibility of manufacturing bone screws with standardized dimensions.

The effect of various processing parameters, such as nip gap, friction ratio and roll temperature, on the tensile properties of short Kevlar aramid fibre-thermoplastic polyurethane composite has been investigated and the tensile and tear fracture surfaces have been characterised using a scanning electron microscope. A nip gap of 0.45 mm, a friction ratio of 1.15 and a roll temperature of 62°C was found to give optimum mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscopy study revealed a higher extent of fibre orientation in the milling direction in the above condition.

Research interest in oats has focussed on their nutritional value, but there have been few studies of their food processing. Heat treatment is characteristic of oat processing, as it is needed to inactivate lipase and to facilitate flaking. A Texture Analyser was used to characterise the mechanical properties of unkilned and kilned oat groats after steaming and tempering in an oven for 30, 60 and 90 min at 80, 95 and 110 degrees C. Maximum force, number of peaks before maximum and final force after 5s hold were used to characterise the behaviour of the groats during compression. Kilned groats were larger and softer before steaming. After steaming and tempering, the moisture content of the kilned groats was higher than for unkilned groats. Hot, steamed oats were softer than cold, unsteamed groats, indicated by a decrease in maximum force from 59 to 55 N, and there was no significant difference between kilned and unkilned groats. However, higher temperatures during tempering increased maximum force. These results suggest that mild steam treatment yields softer oat groats, whereas cold or over-treated groats tend to be harder. Flake breakage and texture are important quality, criteria in oat flakes. These properties are determined by the mechanical properties of the flakes, which may be influenced by process variables such as kilning and flake thickness. A pin deformation method was used to measure the rupture force of individual oat flakes at different water activities. The monolayer value of ground oat flakes ranged from 5.83 to 684 g/100 g dry matter Thick flakes were strongest, requiring 3.4 N to rupture the flake compared to 2.2 N for the thin flakes. Water softened the flakes, causing a decrease in rupture force from 3.6 N to 2.4 N as water activity; increased from 0.115 to 0.848. Kilning had a significant effect on flake thickness but not on the mechanical properties. This study suggests that oat flakes should be stored at water activity 0.4 or less as there is a sharp loss of flake strength above this point.

A specific manufacturing process to obtain continuous glass fiber-reinforced RIFE laminates was studied and some of their mechanical properties were evaluated. Young's modulus and maximum strength were measured by three-point bending test and tensile test using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. Adhesion tests, thermal analysis and microscopy were used to evaluate the fiber-matrix adhesion, which is very dependent on the sintering time. The composite material obtained had a Young's modulus of 14.2 GPa and ultimate strength of 165 MPa, which corresponds to approximately 24 times the modulus and six times the ultimate strength of pure RIFE. These results show that the RIFE composite, manufactured under specific conditions, has great potential to provide structural parts with a performance suitable for application in structural components. A series of aluminum alloys containing additions of scandium, zirconium, and ytterbium were cast to evaluate the effect of partial ytterbium substitution for scandium on tensile behavior. Due to the high price of scandium, a crucible-melt interaction study was performed to ensure no scandium was lost in graphite, alumina, magnesia, or zirconia crucibles after holding a liquid Al-Sc master alloy for 8 hours at 900 °C in an argon atmosphere. The alloys were subjected to an isochronal aging treatment and tested for conductivity and Vickers microhardness after each increment. For scandium-containing alloys, peak hardnesses of 520-790 MPa, and peak tensile stresses of 138-234 MPa were observed after aging from 150-350 °C for 3 hours in increments of 50 °C, and for alloys without scandium, peak hardnesses of 217-335 MPa and peak tensile stresses of 45-63 MPa were observed after a 3 hour, 150 °C aging treatment. The hardness and tensile strength of the ytterbium containing alloy was found to be lower than in the alloy with no ytterbium substitution.
