Hypertension is a common heritable cardiovascular risk factor. Some rare monogenic forms of hypertension have been described, but the majority of patients suffer from essential hypertension, for whom the underlying genetic mechanisms are not clear. Essential hypertension is a complex trait, involving multiple genes and environmental factors. Recently, progress in the identification of common genetic variants associated with essential hypertension has been made due to large-scale international collaborative projects. In this article we review the new research methods used as well as selected recent findings in this field.

This contribution is part of a research on guidance and employment in La Plata , province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) undertaken jointly by the Chairs of Preventive Psychology and Vocational Guidance, both pertaining to the course of studies for Psychology at the National University of La Plata. This research is based on four axes, namely, education-work-social policies-health. This paper shall focus around the health axis, which is not provided with placement and employment services. Some unsystematical guidance experiences from the services of Adolescence and Mental Health are currently under way in the area. Research points to the existence of new demands of psychological treatment from a population ("the new poor") afraid of losing their jobs -or even unemployed- who was not in the habit of going to the public hospital. In the casuistry explored here, people afraid of losing their jobs present more psychosomatic complexities. Local population is also analysed and the said analysis is linked with several national and international research projects.

On the first part of this research I found that governance is a political concept which responds adequately to social needs of human being. Thus, an adequate conceptualization of governance could help to solve social problems and lead efforts of Development Cooperation to success. This political concept is particularly appropriate to current Peruvian society where exist social conflicts which show a clear necessity of planning which should be leaded by the public sector. This is necessary to face cultural and social diversity which characterize this society. After an analysis of the International Cooperation management in Peru and a review of the last projects for developing governance, I found there is not a Politic for International Cooperation; projects does not have a territorial focusing; and planning does not characterize as union between knowledge and action. In this sense, there is a traditional planning in Development Cooperation. This research contributes with a model to lead International Cooperation projects for developing governance. This model is characterized by a leadership of public sector; an innovation in the public sector management; and a mix planning model between Politics Analysis and Social Learning. Finally, as the model was validated by two International Cooperation projects focused in sectorial objective, this model could have a wide application in Development programs in Peru.

HERMES is one of the projects in the European ATT Programme. The ATT Programme (or DRIVE II as it is frequently referred to) is an application oriented Community Research and Technological Development Programme that has been conceived and implemented with the objective of contributing to the competitiveness of Europe and to its social and economic cohesion. An important means toward this end is the direct collaboration between different European sector actors: road authorities, fleet operators, road user representatives, industry, and research institutions. DRIVE I has already achieved an important step into this direction. DRIVE II aims at providing a framework that encourages even closer cooperation through large scale international pilot projects that will require common functional and technical specifications for the systems to be implemented at least between the partners directly involved in any project. HERMES is one of the so-called "supporting R&D projects" that provides strategies, algorithms and systems for the pilot applications

An internship in a European company dealing with aquaculture and biotechnology - AquaBioTech Group, Malta - was undertaken to complete the Master Degree of Science in Aquaculture of the School of Tourism and Maritime Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. Biotechnology and aquaculture are two areas that have been synergistically used to contribute for the progress and improvement of fish production. The AquaBioTech Group is an example of a company able to integrate these areas to maximizing their services. Located in Mosta (Malta) the company operates in a sustainable way using Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to maintain aquaculture species. In collaboration with several companies and institutions, the AquaBioTech Group is involved and supports the development of important international research projects. The present report focuses on two important parts of the internship performed during 6 months. Initially, it will cover the operation and constitution of the company, describing the routines and techniques acquired. Then, it will describe a pathology trial that forms the practical and scientific component of this report. Despite the limitation to describe some confidential assays, this trial consisted in the infection of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with the bacterium Flavobacterium psychrophilum in order to evaluate the mortality rates over time. The internship served to solidify theoretical knowledge acquired during the academic training, develop professional skills and provide an understanding of jobs available on the market.
