A systematic study of electron cyclotron resonance (CR) in two sets of GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As modulation-doped quantum-well samples (well widths between 12 and 24 nm) has been carried out in magnetic fields up to 30 T. Polaron CR is the dominant transition in the region of GaAs optical phonons for the set of lightly doped samples, and the results are in good agreement with calculations that include the interaction with interface optical phonons. The results from the heavily doped set are markedly different. At low magnetic fields (below the GaAs reststrahlen region), all three samples exhibit almost identical CR which shows little effect of the polaron interaction due to screening and Pauli-principle effects. Above the GaAs LO-phonon region (B > similar to 23 T), the three samples behave very differently. For the most lightly doped sample (3 x 10(11) cm(-2)) only one transition minimum is observed, which can be explained as screened polaron CR. A sample of intermediate density (6 x 10(11) cm(-2)) shows two lines above 23 T; the higher frequency branch is indistinguishable from the positions of the single line of the low density sample. For the most heavily, doped sample (1.2 x 10(12) cm(-2)) there is no evidence of high frequency resonance, and the strong, single line observed is indistinguishable from the lower branch observed from sample with intermediate doping density. We suggest that the low frequency branch in our experiment is a magnetoplasmon resonance red-shifted by disorder, and the upper branch is single-particle-like screened polaron CR. This paper reports on atomistic simulations of the interactions between the dominant lattice dislocations in ?-TiAl (<1 0 1] superdislocations) with all three kinds of ?/?-lamellar boundaries in polysynthetically twinned (PST) TiAl. The purpose of this study is to clarify the early stage of lamellar boundary controlled plastic deformation in PST TiAl. The interatomic interactions in our simulations are described by a bond order potential for L10-TiAl which provides a proper quantum mechanical description of the bonding. We are interested in the dislocation core geometries that the lattice produces in proximity to lamellar boundaries and the way in which these cores are affected by the elastic and atomistic effects of dislocation-lamellar boundary interaction. We study the way in which the interfaces affect the activation of ordinary dislocation and superdislocation slip inside the ?-lamellae and transfer of plastic deformation across lamellar boundaries. We find three new phenomena in the atomic-scale plasticity of PST TiAl, particularly due to elastic and atomic mismatch associated with the 60° and 120° ?/?-interfaces: (i) two new roles of the ?/?-interfaces, i.e. decomposition of superdislocations within 120° and 60° interfaces and subsequent detachment of a single ordinary dislocation and (ii) blocking of ordinary dislocations by 60° and 120° interfaces resulting in the emission of a twinning dislocation.

Analysis of binding recognition and conformation of biomolecules is of paramount important in understanding of their vital functions in complex biological systems. By enabling sub-wavelength light localization and strong local field enhancement, plasmonic biosensors have become dominant tools used for such analysis owing to their label-free and real-time attributes1,2. However, the plasmonic biosensors are not well-suited to provide information regarding conformation or chemical fingerprint of biomolecules. Here, we show that plasmonic metamaterials, consisting of periodic arrays of artificial split-ring resonators (SRRs)3, can enable capabilities of both sensing and fingerprinting of biomolecules. We demonstrate that by engineering geometry of individual SRRs, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) frequency of the metamaterials could be tuned to visible-near infrared regimes (Vis-NIR) such that they possess high local field enhancement for surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS). This will provide the basis for the development of a dual mode label-free conformational-resolving and quantitative detection platform. We present here the ability of each sensing mode to independently detect binding adsorption and to identify different conformational states of Guanine (G)-rich DNA monolayers in different environment milieu. Also shown is the use of the nanosensor for fingerprinting and detection of Arginine-Glycine-Glycine (RGG) peptide binding to the G-quadruplex aptamer. The dual-mode nanosensor will significantly contribute to unraveling the complexes of the conformational dynamics of biomolecules as well as to improving specificity of biodetection assays that the conventional, population-averaged plasmonic biosensors cannot achieve.

Density functional theory calculations are carried out for Rh(111)-p(2 x 2)-CO, Rh(111)-p(2 x 2)-S, Rh(111)-p(2 x 2)-(S + CO), Rh(111)-p(3 x 3)-CO, Rh(111)-p(3 x 3)-S and Rh(111)-p(3 x 3)-(S + CO), aiming to shed some light on the S poisoning effect. Geometrical structures of these systems are optimized and chemisorption energies are determined. The presence of S does not significantly influence the geometrical structure and chemisorption energy of CO and vice versa, which strongly suggests that the interaction between CO and S on the Rh(111) surface is mainly short-range in nature. The long range electronic effect for the dramatic attenuation of the CO methanation activity by sulfur is likely to be incorrect. It is suggested that an ensemble effect may be dominant in the catalytic deactivation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Research on how customers engage in the co-creation processes envisaged by the Servicedominant logic paradigm is currently limited and even less work has been published on frameworks for organizations to manage the co-creation process. This conceptual paper examines a particular aspect of co-creation: co-production as a result of the application of self-service technology (SST). We propose a conceptual framework for co-production, which emphasizes the need to understand productivity from the point of view of the customer, and demonstrate how this can be applied in both consumer (b2c) and interorganizational(b2b) contexts. We conclude that service organizations might benefit from clearly identifying co-production with task-performance, and co-creation with the valueattributing aspects of the customer service experience. Both aspects generate a range of design and management challenges for suppliers particularly the need to understand the cocreation process 'outputs' desired by customers and the full costs of moving away from person to person interaction.

This study explores the implications of an organization moving toward service-dominant logic (S-D logic) on the sales function. Driven by its customers’ needs, a service orientation by its nature requires personal interaction and sales personnel are in an ideal position to develop offerings with the customer. However, the development of S-D logic may require sales staff to develop additional skills. Employing a single case study, the study identified that sales personnel are quick to appreciate the advantages of S-D logic for customer satisfaction and six specific skills were highlighted and explored. Further, three propositions were identified: in an organization adopting S-D logic, the sales process needs to elicit needs at both embedded-value and value-in-use levels. In addition, the sales process needs to coproduce not just goods and service attributes but also attributes of the customer’s usage processes. Further, the sales process needs to coproduce not just goods and service attributes but also attributes of the customer’s usage processes.

The recent identification of multiple dominant mutations in the gene encoding β-catenin in both humans and mice has enabled exploration of the molecular and cellular basis of β-catenin function in cognitive impairment. In humans, β-catenin mutations that cause a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders have been identified. We identified de novo β-catenin mutations in patients with intellectual disability, carefully characterized their phenotypes, and were able to define a recognizable intellectual disability syndrome. In parallel, characterization of a chemically mutagenized mouse line that displays features similar to those of human patients with β-catenin mutations enabled us to investigate the consequences of β-catenin dysfunction through development and into adulthood. The mouse mutant, designated batface (Bfc), carries a Thr653Lys substitution in the C-terminal armadillo repeat of β-catenin and displayed a reduced affinity for membrane-associated cadherins. In association with this decreased cadherin interaction, we found that the mutation results in decreased intrahemispheric connections, with deficits in dendritic branching, long-term potentiation, and cognitive function. Our study provides in vivo evidence that dominant mutations in β-catenin underlie losses in its adhesion-related functions, which leads to severe consequences, including intellectual disability, childhood hypotonia, progressive spasticity of lower limbs, and abnormal craniofacial features in adults

Nutrient enrichment and drought conditions are major threats to lowland rivers causing ecosystem degradation and composition changes in plant communities. The controls on primary producer composition in chalk rivers are investigated using a new model and existing data from the River Frome (UK) to explore abiotic and biotic interactions. The growth and interaction of four primary producer functional groups (suspended algae, macrophytes, epiphytes, sediment biofilm) were successfully linked with flow, nutrients (N, P), light and water temperature such that the modelled biomass dynamics of the four groups matched that of the observed. Simulated growth of suspended algae was limited mainly by the residence time of the river rather than in-stream phosphorus concentrations. The simulated growth of the fixed vegetation (macrophytes, epiphytes, sediment biofilm) was overwhelmingly controlled by incoming solar radiation and light attenuation in the water column. Nutrients and grazing have little control when compared to the other physical controls in the simulations. A number of environmental threshold values were identified in the model simulations for the different producer types. The simulation results highlighted the importance of the pelagic–benthic interactions within the River Frome and indicated that process interaction defined the behaviour of the primary producers, rather than a single, dominant driver. The model simulations pose interesting questions to be considered in the next iteration of field- and laboratory based studies.

Strangelets (hypothetical stable lumps of strange quarkmatter) of astrophysical origin may be ultimately detected in specific cosmic ray experiments. The initial mass distribution resulting from the possible astrophysical production sites would be subject to reprocessing in the interstellar medium and in the earth`s atmosphere. In order to get a better understanding of the claims for the detection of this still hypothetic state of hadronic matter, we present a study of strangelet-nucleus interactions including several physical processes of interest (abrasion, fusion, fission, excitation and de-excitation of the strangelets), to address the fate of the baryon number along the strangelet path. It is shown that, although fusion may be important for low-energy strangelets in the interstellar medium (thus increasing the initial baryon number A), in the earth`s atmosphere the loss of the baryon number should be the dominant process. The consequences of these findings are briefly addressed.

Several different methods were used to investigate the vesicle-to-micelle transition induced by the addition of the nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether (C12E8) to spontaneously formed vesicle dispersions of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide and chloride (DODAX, X = Cl- and Br-). Dynamic light scattering reveals that fast mode micelles are formed upon addition of C12E6. The micellar mode becomes progressively dominant as the C12E8/DODAX molar ratio (R) is increased until the vesicle-to-micelle transition is complete. Turbidity, calorimetry, fluorescence quantum yield, and anisotropy measurements indicate two critical compositions: the first, R-sat, when the vesicle bilayer is saturated with C12E8 and the second, R-sol, which corresponds to the complete vesicle-to-micelle transition. Below R-sat the vesicles swell due to incorporation of the surfactant into the vesicle bilayer, and above R-sat mixed micelles and bilayer structures coexist, the determined R-sat and R-sol range from 0 to 1 and 4 to 6, respectively, depending on the surfactant counterion and the experimental method used. Cryo-transmission electron microscopy micrographs show that when R approximate to 4, micelles coexist with extended bilayer fragments. In pure DODAX (1.0 mM) dispersions, unilamellar vesicles are observed. According to the DSC results, C12E8 lowers the gel-to-liquid crystalline transition temperature, T-m, of DODAX and broadens the main transition peak which disappears around R approximate to 5 and 6 for DODAC and DODAB, respectively.

We have studied the bevahior of the phenomenological 4f-4f intensity parameters in compounds of the Nd ion with glycine, L-aspartic acid, L-glutamic acid, L-histidine, DL-malic acid and Aspartame™ in aqueous solution, as a function of the pK values and partial charges on the oxygens of the carboxylate groups of these molecules. The results are discussed and qualitatively interpreted in terms of the forced electric dipole and dynamic coupling mechanisms of the 4f-4f intensities, thus indicating that the forced electric dipole mechanism is dominant.
