The enthalpies of reaction between aniline and HCHO at various molar proportions under neutral conditions were determined by solution calorimetry. These measurements are new in the field of aniline and HCHO condensation polymers. The specific heats of the products formed were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and were used in the enthalpy calculations. Plots of enthalpy of reaction calculated with respect to aniline and HCHO vs. different A/F molar ratios were made. From the enthalpy data it appears that the reactions between different A/F molar ratios yield different products.

The Stockmayer-Fixman relation was used to evaluate the short range and long range interaction parameters for methyl methacrylate/acrylonitrile copolymers of 0,566 and 0,657 mole fraction of monomeric units of acrylonitrile in the solvents acetonitrile, 2-butanone, dimethyl formamide, and y-butyrolactone, at different temperatures (30, 45, and 60 “C). The values of KO were found to be lower than those of the parent homopolymers, and their values depend on both solvent and temperature. Even negative Ko-values were obtained, in cases in which the Mark Houwink exponent a is nearly unity. The values of the polymer-solvent interaction parameter, x, , are high and close to 0,5, indicating that these solvents are not good. The values of the excess interaction parameter, xAB, are negative and are not affected by temperature. The large extension of these copolymer chains, as exhibited by a and a;-values, can be understood in terms of unusual short range interactions only. Similar results were obtained for some cellulose derivatives.

Ultrasonic velocities in aqueous solutions of some metal acetates, monochloroacelates and trichloroacetates, and the respective acids have been measured at 1 MHz frequency using the pulse technique. The ultrsonic velocity, adiabatic compressibility and apperent molal compressibility were measured as a function of concentration. The apparent molal compressibility values at infinite dilution were calculated and used to determine the hydration numbers.

Synthesis of complex metal oxides by the thermal decomposition of solid-solution precursors (formed by isomorphous compounds of component metals) has been investigated since the method enables mixing of cations on an atomic scale and drastically reduces diffusion distances to a few angstroms. Several interesting oxides such as Ca2Fe03,5C, aCoz04,C a2C0205a, nd Ca,FeCo05 have been prepared by this technique starting from carbonate solid solutions of the type Ca,-,Fe,C03, Cal-,Co,C03, and Ca,-,,M,M'yC03 (M, M' = Mn, Fe, Co). The method has been extended to oxalate solid-solution precursors, and the possibility of making use of other kinds of precursor solid solutions is indicated.

This paper deals with studies on the dilute solution properties of methyl methacrylateacrylonitrile copolymer of 0.289 mole fraction (mf) of acrylonitrile composition. MarkHouwink parameters for this copolymer have been evaluated in acetonitrile (MeCN), 2-butanone (MEK), dimethylformamide (DMF) and γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL). The solvent power is found to be in the order of MEK < MeCN < DMF < γ-BL at 30°C. Herein, probably for the first time, the steric factor for the copolymer is found to be lower than that for the parent homopolymers and the excess interaction parameter, AB is found to be negative. This probably suggests that the units are compatible to each other.

Methylammonium bismuth (III) iodide single crystals and films have been developed and investigated. We have further presented the first demonstration of using this organic–inorganic bismuth-based material to replace lead/tin-based perovskite materials in solution-processable solar cells. The organic–inorganic bismuth-based material has advantages of non-toxicity, ambient stability, and low-temperature solution-processability, which provides a promising solution to address the toxicity and stability challenges in organolead- and organotin-based perovskite solar cells. We also demonstrated that trivalent metal cation-based organic–inorganic hybrid materials can exhibit photovoltaic effect, which may inspire more research work on developing and applying organic-inorganic hybrid materials beyond divalent metal cations (Pb (II) and Sn (II)) for solar energy applications.

A novel synthesis of inorganic-organic hybrid films containing well dispersed and almost uniform size Ag nanoparticles in agar-agar matrix has been reported. The films are found to be highly stable for more than a year. The colloidal particles of Ag can be obtained in large quantities in the form of a film or in the gel form when dispersed in agar-agar or by dissolving in a suitable solvent as solution. Characterization has been done by UV-visible spectroscopy and TEM. The hybrid may be of interest to study third-order non-linear susceptibility.

We report the quadratic nonlinearity of one- and two-electron oxidation products of the first series of transition metal complexes of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP). Among many MTPP complexes, only CuTPP and ZnTPP show reversible oxidation/reduction cycles as seen from cyclic voltammetry experiments. While centrosymmetric neutral metalloporphyrins have zero first hyperpolarizability, β, as expected, the cation radicals and dications of CuTPP and ZnTPP have very high β values. The one- and two-electron oxidation of the MTPPs leads to symmetry-breaking of the metal−porphyrin core, resulting in a large β value that is perhaps aided in part by contributions from the two-photon resonance enhancement. The calculated static first hyperpolarizabilities, β0, which are evaluated in the framework of density functional theory by a coupled perturbed Hartree−Fock method, support the experimental trend. The switching of optical nonlinearity has been achieved between the neutral and the one-electron oxidation products but not between the one- and the two-electron oxidation products since dications that are electrochemically reversible are unstable due to the formation of stable isoporphyrins in the presence of nucleophiles such as halides.

Two segmented polyethylene oxides, SPEO-3 and SPEO-4, were prepared using a novel transetherification methodology. Their structures were confirmed by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The complexation of these SPEO's with alkali-metal ions in solution was investigated by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The mole-fraction method was used to determine the complexation ratio of SPEO with LIClO4 at 25 degrees C, which showed that these formed 1:1 (polymer repeat unit/salt) complexes. The association constant, K, for the complex formation was calculated from the variation of the chemical shift values with salt concentration, using a standard nonlinear least-square fitting procedure. The maximum change in chemical shift (Delta delta) and the K values suggest that both SPEO-3 and SPEO-4 formed stronger complexes with lithium salts than with sodium salts. Unexpectedly, the K values were found to be different, when the variation of delta of different carbons was used in the fitting procedure. This suggests that several possible complexed species may be in equilibrium with the uncomplexed one. Structurally similar model compounds were also prepared and their complexation studies indicated that all of them also formed 1:1 complexes with Li salts. Interestingly, it was observed that the polymers gave higher K values suggesting the formation of more stable complexes in polymers when compared to the model analogues. This article deals with studies of the dilute solution properties of methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile (MMA-AN) copolymer of 0.415 mole fraction (mf) of acrylonitrile composition. Mark—Houwink parameters for this copolymer have been evaluated in acetonitrile (MeCN), 2-butanone (MEK), dimethyl formamide (DMF), and γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL). The Mark-Houwink exponent a in all four solvents at all temperatures is larger than the corresponding values of the parent homopolymers. The solvent power is in the order of DMF < γ–BL < MEK < MeCN; [η] decreases with an increase in temperature, which is behavior characteristic of polymers in good solvent. The unperturbed dimensions (K0) values, obtained by the Stockmayer–Fixman method, are lower than those for the parent homopolymers and depend on solvent as well as temperature. The solute—solvent interaction parameter X1 values are close to 0.5; X1 is independent of temperature. The excess interaction parameter XABvalues are negative. The results for this copolymer system in regard to low second virial coefficient A2, large X1, and high a values suggest that the large extension of these copolymer chains is due to the unusual short-range interactions.

A study of the chain conformation in solutions of polyphenylacetylene and poly(2-octyne) has been performed. The two polymers differ in many ways : polyphenylacetylene gives a red solution while poly(2-octyne) is transparent and, a marked difference on the chain rigidity is observed : the statistical length are 45 Å and 135 Å respectively. From the study of these two systems, one deduces that curvature fluctuations play a minor role on the π electrons localization, and that the torsion between monomer units is the pertinent parameter to understand the chain conformation and the π electrons localization.

Three different complexes of copper (I) with bridging 1, 2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), namely [Cu2 (mu-dppe) (CH3CN)6] (ClO4)2 (1), [Cu2 (mu-dppe)2 (CH3 CN)2] (ClO4)2 (2), and [Cu2 (mu-dppe) (dppe)2 (CH3CN)2] (ClO4)2 (3) have been prepared. The structure of [Cu2 (mu-dppe) (dPPe)2 (CH3CH)2] (ClO4)2 has been determined by X-ray crystallography. It crystallizes in the space group PT with a=12.984(6) angstrom, b=13.180(6) angstrom, c=14.001(3) angstrom, alpha=105.23(3), beta=105.60(2), gamma=112.53 (4), V=1944 (3) angstrom3, and Z=1. The structure was refined by least-squares method with R=0.0365; R(w)=0.0451 for 6321 reflections with F0 greater-than-or-equal-to 3 sigma (F0). The CP/MAS P-31 and IR spectra of the complexes have been analysed in the light of available crystallographic data. IR spectroscopy is particularly helpful in identifying the presence of chelating dppe. P-31 chemical shifts observed in solid state are very different from those observed in solution, and change significantly with slight changes in structure. In solution, complex 1 remains undissociated but complexes 2 and 3 undergo extensive dissociation. With a combination of room temperature H-1, Cu-63, and variable temperature P-31 NMR spectra, it is possible to understand the various processes occurring in solution.

N,N',N `'-Tris(2-anisyl)guanidine, (ArNH)(2)C=NAr (Ar = 2-(MeO)C6H4), was cyclopallaclated with Pd(OC(O)R)(2) (R = Me, CF3) in toluene at 70 degrees C to afford palladacycles Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3-(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}(mu-OC(O)R)](2)(R = Me (1a) and CF3 (1b)) in 87% and 95% yield, respectively. Palladacycle 1a was subjected to a metathetical reaction with LiBr in aqueous ethanol at 78 degrees C to afford palladacycle Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}(mu-Br)](2) (2) in 90% yield. Palladacycle 2 was subjected to a bridge-splitting reaction with Lewis bases in CH2Cl2 to afford the monomeric palladacycles Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}Br(L)] (L = 2,6-Me2C5H3N (3a), 2,4-Me2C5H3N (3b), 3,5-Me2C5H3N (3c), XyNC (Xy = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 4a), (BuNC)-Bu-t (4b), and PPh3 (5)) in 87-95% yield. Palladacycle 2 upon reaction with 2 equiv of XyNC in CH2Cl2 afforded an unanticipated palladacycle, Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C(=NXy)(C6H3(OMe)-4)-2(N=C-(NH Ar)(2))-3} Br(CNXy)] (6) in 93% yield, and the driving force for the formation of 6 was ascribed to a ring contraction followed by amine-imine tautomerization. Palladacycles 1 a,b revealed a dimeric transoid in-in conformation with ``open book'' framework in the solid state. In solution, 1 a exhibited a fluxional behavior ascribed to the six-membered ``(C,N)Pd'' ring inversion and partly dissociates to the pincer type and kappa(2)-O,O'-OAc monomeric palladacycles by an anchimerically assisted acetate cleavage process as studied by variable-temperature H-1 NMR data. Palladacycles 3a,b revealed a unique trans configuration around the palladium with lutidine being placed trans to the Pd-C bond, whereas cis stereochemistry was observed between the Pd-C bond and the Lewis base in 4a (as determined by X-ray diffraction data) and 5 (as determined by P-31 and C-13 NMR data). The aforementioned stereochemical difference was explained by invoking relative hardness/softness of the donor atoms around the palladium center. In solution, palladacycles 3a-c exist as a mixture of two interconverting boat conformers via a planar intermediate without any bond breaking due to the six-membered ``(C,N)Pd'' ring inversion, whereas palladacycles 4a,b and 5 exist as a single isomer, as deduced from detailed H-1 NMR studies.
