User guide for shock and blast simulation with the OctVCE code (version 3.5+), Department of Mechanical Engineering Report 2007/13

OctVCE is a cartesian cell CFD code produced especially for numerical simulations of shock and blast wave interactions with complex geometries. Virtual Cell Embedding (VCE) was chosen as its cartesian cell kernel as it is simple to code and sufficient for practical engineering design problems. This also makes the code much more ‘user-friendly’ than structured grid approaches as the gridding process is done automatically. The CFD methodology relies on a finite-volume formulation of the unsteady Euler equations and is solved using a standard explicit Godonov (MUSCL) scheme. Both octree-based adaptive mesh refinement and shared-memory parallel processing capability have also been incorporated. Cholestanol: A serum marker to guide LDL cholesterol-lowering therapy

Statins have been the mainstay of lipid-lowering therapy since their introduction. However, as lower LDL cholesterol targets are sought, adjunct therapies are becoming increasingly important. Few patients reach new targets with statin monotherapy. We propose that the cholestanol: cholesterol ratio can be used to guide lipid-lowering therapy and result in greater numbers of patients reaching target LDL cholesterol. By determining whether a patient is mainly a synthesizer or absorber of cholesterol, customized regimens can be used and are expected to improve patient outcomes and minimize costs of treatment. Methadone maintenance therapy for opioid dependence - A guide to appropriate use

Opioid dependence is a chronic, relapsing condition that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Methadone maintenance therapy involves the provision of a controlled supply of an orally administered opioid, thereby stabilising the opioid-dependent patient. Research studies have shown that methadone maintenance reduces illicit opioid use, opioid-related crime, premature mortality and the risk of HIV infection. It is most effective when prescribed at an adequate dosage (usually 60 to 100 mg/day) and when long term maintenance on methadone is the goal of treatment rather than detoxification from all drugs including methadone. Successful long term methadone maintenance is more likely when it takes place within the context of a well established therapeutic relationship and when the medical, social and psychological needs of patients are met either through direct assistance or referral.
