We propose a robust method for mosaicing of document images using features derived from connected components. Each connected component is described using the Angular Radial Tran. form (ART). To ensure geometric consistency during feature matching, the ART coefficients of a connected component are augmented with those of its two nearest neighbors. The proposed method addresses two critical issues often encountered in correspondence matching: (i) The stability of features and (ii) Robustness against false matches due to the multiple instances of characters in a document image. The use of connected components guarantees a stable localization across images. The augmented features ensure a successful correspondence matching even in the presence of multiple similar regions within the page. We illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on camera captured document images exhibiting large variations in viewpoint, illumination and scale.

In this paper, we introduce a novel high-level visual content descriptor which is devised for performing semantic-based image classification and retrieval. The work can be treated as an attempt to bridge the so called “semantic gap”. The proposed image feature vector model is fundamentally underpinned by the image labelling framework, called Collaterally Confirmed Labelling (CCL), which incorporates the collateral knowledge extracted from the collateral texts of the images with the state-of-the-art low-level image processing and visual feature extraction techniques for automatically assigning linguistic keywords to image regions. Two different high-level image feature vector models are developed based on the CCL labelling of results for the purposes of image data clustering and retrieval respectively. A subset of the Corel image collection has been used for evaluating our proposed method. The experimental results to-date already indicates that our proposed semantic-based visual content descriptors outperform both traditional visual and textual image feature models.

The work can be treated as an attempt for bridging the so called "semantic gap". The proposed image feature vector model is fundamentally underpinned by an automatic image labelling framework, called Collaterally Cued Labelling (CCL), which incorporates the collateral knowledge extracted from the collateral texts accompanying the images with the state-of-the-art low-level visual feature extraction techniques for automatically assigning textual keywords to image regions. A subset of the Corel image collection was used for evaluating the proposed method. The efficiency in image classification tasks can be improved using combined information provided by several sources, such as shape, color, and texture visual properties. Although many works proposed to combine different feature vectors, we model the descriptor combination as an optimization problem to be addressed by evolutionary-based techniques, which compute distances between samples that maximize their separability in the feature space. The robustness of the proposed technique is assessed by the Optimum-Path Forest classifier. Experiments showed that the proposed methodology can outperform individual information provided by single descriptors in well-known public datasets. © 2012 IEEE.

Texture image analysis is an important field of investigation that has attracted the attention from computer vision community in the last decades. In this paper, a novel approach for texture image analysis is proposed by using a combination of graph theory and partially self-avoiding deterministic walks. From the image, we build a regular graph where each vertex represents a pixel and it is connected to neighboring pixels (pixels whose spatial distance is less than a given radius). Transformations on the regular graph are applied to emphasize different image features. To characterize the transformed graphs, partially self-avoiding deterministic walks are performed to compose the feature vector. Experimental results on three databases indicate that the proposed method significantly improves correct classification rate compared to the state-of-the-art, e.g. from 89.37% (original tourist walk) to 94.32% on the Brodatz database, from 84.86% (Gabor filter) to 85.07% on the Vistex database and from 92.60% (original tourist walk) to 98.00% on the plant leaves database. In view of these results, it is expected that this method could provide good results in other applications such as texture synthesis and texture segmentation. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. One of the main challenges for intelligent vehicles is the capability of detecting other vehicles in their environment, which constitute the main source of accidents. Specifically, many methods have been proposed in the literature for video-based vehicle detection. Most of them perform supervised classification using some appearance-related feature, in particular, symmetry has been extensively utilized. However, an in-depth analysis of the classification power of this feature is missing. As a first contribution of this paper, a thorough study of the classification performance of symmetry is presented within a Bayesian decision framework. This study reveals that the performance of symmetry-based classification is very limited. Therefore, as a second contribution, a new gradient-based descriptor is proposed for vehicle detection. This descriptor exploits the known rectangular structure of vehicle rears within a Histogram of Gradients (HOG)-based framework. Experiments show that the proposed descriptor outperforms largely symmetry as a feature for vehicle verification, achieving classification rates over 90%.

This paper describes a novel algorithm for tracking the motion of the urethra from trans-perineal ultrasound. Our work is based on the structure-from-motion paradigm and therefore handles well structures with ill-defined and partially missing boundaries. The proposed approach is particularly well-suited for video sequences of low resolution and variable levels of blurriness introduced by anatomical motion of variable speed. Our tracking method identifies feature points on a frame by frame basis using the SURF detector/descriptor. Inter-frame correspondence is achieved using nearest-neighbor matching in the feature space. The motion is estimated using a non-linear bi-quadratic model, which adequately describes the deformable motion of the urethra. Experimental results are promising and show that our algorithm performs well when compared to manual tracking.

This study of the veranda as seen through the eyes of Lady Maria Nugent and Michael Scott, alias Tom Cringle, clearly demonstrates the important role that the piazza, as it was then more commonly known, played in the life of early nineteenth century Caribbean colonial society. The popularity of the veranda throughout the region, in places influenced by different European as well as African cultures, and among all classes of people, suggests that the appeal of this typical feature was based on something more than architectural fashion. A place of relative comfort in hot weather, the veranda is also a space at the interface of indoors and outdoors which allows for a wide variety of uses, for solitary or small or large group activities, many of which were noted by Nugent and Scott. Quintessentially, the veranda is a place in which to relax and take pleasure, not least of which is the enjoyment of the prospect, be it a panoramic view, a peaceful garden or a lively street scene. Despite the great changes in the nature of society, in the Caribbean and in many other parts of the world, the veranda and related structures such as the balcony continue to play at least as important a role in daily life as they did two centuries ago. The veranda of today’s Californian or Australian bungalow, and the balcony of the apartment block in the residential area of the modern city are among the contemporary equivalents of the lower and upper piazzas of Lady Nugent’s and Tom Cringle’s day.
