Compatibilizing effects and mechanism of compatibilization of LLDPE/PEO blends by EAA

The compatibilizing effects of the compatibilizer, ethylene-acrylic acid random copolymer (EAA), on linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends and the mechanism of compatibilization of the blends have been studied. Morphology and microstructures as characterized by SEM, DMA, DSC and IR show that EAA can act as an effective compatibilizer, and the mechanism of compatibilization is due to the compatibility of amorphous phases between EAA and LLDPE, and intermolecular interaction between the carboxylic groups in EAA. and the ethereal oxygens in PEG.

Botany origin and protein content of homemade honeys from Galicia hives (NW Spain)

The botanic origin and the protein content of 15 honeys from small bee farms exploitations of Galicia, for family consume, were studied; the aim is to check if the protein wealth and the pollen wealth are dependent parameters. Seven honeys resulted to be Rhamnus frangula unifloral (pollen patterns with low diversity), two Castanea sativa Miller unifloral, other one heather unifloral, and five was multifloral honeys of various pollen patterns (four Castanea predominant and one Rhamnus frangula predominant). Their pollen wealth was low; eight honeys classified in the Maurizio Class I, 3 in Class II, 2 in Class III, and one in Maurizio Class IV. There has been a wide variability in its protein content (0.09- 4.83 mg prot./g honey). The relative amount of pollen from different taxa has a direct or inverse proportionality to wealth protein.

Will attracting the creative class boost economic growth in old industrial regions? A case study of Scotland

Attracting in-migration of the creative class has been argued by Florida (2002) to be a route to higher economic growth in the era of the knowledge economy. This paper critically evaluates this proposition in relation to old industrial regions using the example of Scotland. The paper presents an assessment of, in the first instance, to what extent there is a shortage of skilled, talented and entrepreneurial individuals and, in the second instance, whether a talent attraction strategy alone can hope to attract such people to Scotland. It is proposed that for most migrants the availability of appropriate economic opportunities is a prerequisite for mobility. However, despite uncertain evidence that place attractiveness is a catalyst to mobility among the so-called creative class, this is not a reason for dismissing talent attraction programmes. Instead it is argued that talent attraction programmes have the potential to contribute to old industrial economies, but their success will be greatest when talent attraction is carefully targeted and based on economic realities rather than the marketing of ethereal conceptions of place attractiveness.

Cation complexation by chemically modified calixarenes. 11. Complexation and extraction of alkali cations by calix[5]- and -[6]arene ketones. Crystal and molecular structures of calix[5]arene ketones and Na+ and Rb+ complexes

A series of four calix[5]arenes and three calix[6]arenes (R-calixarene-OCH2COR1) (R = H or Bu-t) with alkyl ketone residues (R-1 = Me or Bu-t) on the lower rim have been synthesized, and their affinity for complexation of alkali cations has been assessed through phase-transfer experiments and stability constant measurements. The conformations of these ketones have been probed by H-1 NMR and X-ray diffraction analysis, and by molecular mechanics calculations. Pentamer 3 (R R-1 = Bu-t) possesses a symmetrical cone conformation in solution and a very distorted cone conformation in the solid state. Pentamer 5 (R = H, R-1 = Bu-t) exists in a distorted 1,2-alternate conformation in the solid state, but in solution two slowly interconverting conformations, one a cone and the other presumed to be 1,2-alternate, can be detected. X-ray structure analysis of the sodium and rubidium perchlorate complexes of 3 reveal the cations deeply encapsulated by the ethereal and carbonyl oxygen atoms in distorted cone conformations which can be accurately reproduced by molecular mechanics calculations. The phase-transfer and stability constant data reveal that the extent of complexation depends on calixarene size and the nature of the alkyl residues adjacent to the ketonic carbonyls with tert-butyl much more efficacious than methyl.

Ionic liquid electrolyte for lithium metal batteries : physical, electrochemical, and interfacial studies of N-Methyl-N-butylmorpholinium Bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide

The ionic liquid (IL) N-methyl-N-butylmorpholinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (C₄mmor FSI) is examined from physical and electrochemical perspectives. Pulsed field gradient NMR spectroscopy shows that ion diffusivities are low compared with similar, non-ethereal ILs. Ionicity values indicate that above room temperature, less than 50% of ions contribute to conductivity.

Lithium cycling in symmetrical cells using a C₄mmor FSI-based electrolyte is best demonstrated at elevated temperatures. Specific capacities of 130 mAh g⁻¹ are achieved in a Li−LiFePO₄ battery at 85 °C. FT-IR spectroscopic investigations of lithium electrodes suggest the presence of alkoxide species in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), implying a ring-opening reaction of C₄mmor with lithium metal. In contrast, the SEI derived from N-methyl-N-propylpiperidinium FSI lacks the alkoxide signature but shows signs of alkyl unsaturation, and the activation energy for Li+ transport through this SEI is slightly lower than that for the C₄mmor-derived SEI. Our detailed findings give insight into the capabilities and limitations of rechargeable lithium metal batteries utilizing a C₄mmor FSI electrolyte.
