In contemporary times, there is a compelling need to understand the nature of positive community relationships that value diverse others. This dissertation is a hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry into the essence of what it means to feel a sense of community. Specifically, I explored this phenomenon from the perspective of middle school teachers and students through the following questions: What meanings do students and teachers ascribe to feeling, experiencing, and developing a sense of community in their classes? To what extent do students’ and teachers’ ideas about feeling a sense of community include the acceptance of individual differences? Together these questions contributed to the overarching question, what is the essence of feeling a sense of community? As the data pool for the research, I used 192 essays and 218 posters from students who had been asked to write or draw about their visions of a positive classroom community where they felt a sense of community. I conducted 9 teacher interviews on the topic as well. My findings revealed one overarching ontology, Being-in-Relation, which outlined a full integration between individuality and community as a “way of being.” I also found five attributes that are present when individuals feel a sense of community: Supporting Others, Dialogue, An Ethic of Respect and Care, Safety, and Healthy Conflict. Contributions from this research include extensions to the literature about community; clarity for those who wish to establish a strong foundation of community relationships within formal and non-formal educational programs; insight that may assist educators, leaders, and policy makers within formal educational systems; and an opportunity to consider the extent to which the findings may point toward broader implications.

This perspectives paper and its associated commentaries examine Alan Rugman's conceptual contribution to international business scholarship. Most significantly, we highlight Rugman's version of internalization theory as an approach that integrates transaction cost economics and ‘classical’ internalization theory with elements from the resource-based view, such that it is especially relevant to strategic management. In reviewing his oeuvre, we also offer observations on his ideas for ‘new internalization theory’. We classify his other novel insights into four categories: Network Multinationals; National competitiveness; Development and public policy; and Emerging Economy MNEs. This special section offers multiple views on how his work informed the larger academic debate and considers how these ideas might evolve in the longer term.

1,3-beta-Glucan depolymerizing enzymes have considerable biotechnological applications including biofuel production, feedstock-chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Here we describe a comprehensive functional characterization and low-resolution structure of a hyperthermophilic laminarinase from Thermotoga petrophila (TpLam). We determine TpLam enzymatic mode of operation, which specifically cleaves internal beta-1,3-glucosidic bonds. The enzyme most frequently attacks the bond between the 3rd and 4th residue from the non-reducing end, producing glucose, laminaribiose and laminaritriose as major products. Far-UV circular dichroism demonstrates that TpLam is formed mainly by beta structural elements, and the secondary structure is maintained after incubation at 90 degrees C. The structure resolved by small angle X-ray scattering, reveals a multi-domain structural architecture of a V-shape envelope with a catalytic domain flanked by two carbohydrate-binding modules. A critical review of gravitational wave theory is made. It is pointed out that the usual linear approach to the gravitational wave theory is neither conceptually consistent nor mathematically justified. Relying upon that analysis it is argued that-analogously to a Yang-Mills propagating field, which must be nonlinear to carry its gauge charge-a gravitational wave must necessarily be nonlinear to transport its own charge-that is, energy-momentum.

Dispute settlement mechanisms help to create a fairly predictable and accurate environment in which economic agents can pursue their activities in the international arena. The World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) has now been in operation for 10 years and it is fitting, at this point to assess the progress achieved by Latin America and the Caribbean, the region that made most use of this mechanism during the period, and whose countries have made significant gains against protectionism in key export sectors. These successes constitute important precedents which will influence upcoming multilateral negotiations and future trade disputes. This article reviews the work carried out by the DSB, the role of the leading stakeholders in the system (the United States and the European Union) and progress made by countries of the region in a global context marked by the complexity of trade issues and the legal framework that regulates them. The findings presented in this article are based on the study "Una década de funcionamiento del Sistema de Solución de Diferencias de la OMC: avances y desafíos".

BACKGROUND This study evaluated whether risk factors for sternal wound infections vary with the type of surgical procedure in cardiac operations. METHODS This was a university hospital surveillance study of 3,249 consecutive patients (28% women) from 2006 to 2010 (median age, 69 years [interquartile range, 60 to 76]; median additive European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, 5 [interquartile range, 3 to 8]) after (1) isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), (2) isolated valve repair or replacement, or (3) combined valve procedures and CABG. All other operations were excluded. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression were conducted to identify independent predictors for development of sternal wound infections. RESULTS We detected 122 sternal wound infections (3.8%) in 3,249 patients: 74 of 1,857 patients (4.0%) after CABG, 19 of 799 (2.4%) after valve operations, and 29 of 593 (4.9%) after combined procedures. In CABG patients, bilateral internal thoracic artery harvest, procedural duration exceeding 300 minutes, diabetes, obesity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and female sex (model 1) were independent predictors for sternal wound infection. A second model (model 2), using the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation, revealed bilateral internal thoracic artery harvest, diabetes, obesity, and the second and third quartiles of the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation were independent predictors. In valve patients, model 1 showed only revision for bleeding as an independent predictor for sternal infection, and model 2 yielded both revision for bleeding and diabetes. For combined valve and CABG operations, both regression models demonstrated revision for bleeding and duration of operation exceeding 300 minutes were independent predictors for sternal infection. CONCLUSIONS Risk factors for sternal wound infections after cardiac operations vary with the type of surgical procedure. In patients undergoing valve operations or combined operations, procedure-related risk factors (revision for bleeding, duration of operation) independently predict infection. In patients undergoing CABG, not only procedure-related risk factors but also bilateral internal thoracic artery harvest and patient characteristics (diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obesity, female sex) are predictive of sternal wound infection. Preventive interventions may be justified according to the type of operation.

The degradation observed on a 7-kWp Si-x photovoltaic array after 17 years of exposure on the roof of the Solar Energy Institute of the Polytechnic University of Madrid is presented. The mean peak power degradation has been 9% over this time, or an equivalent to 0.53% per year, whereas peak power standard deviation has remained constant. The main visual defects are backsheet delamination at the polyester/polyvinyl fluoride outer interface and cracks in the terminal boxes and at the joint between the frame and the laminate. Insulation resistance complies well with the requirements of the International Electrotechnical Commission 61215 tests.
