As they have excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, much research has been conducted with respect to biomedical applications of titanium alloys. This work aims to study the experimental system binary alloy Ti-15Mo, in the raw state of fusion and heat treatment after homogenization, solubilization and calcination (simulating conditions employed for nanotube growth) targeting biomedical applications. Samples were obtained by casting the components in an electric arc furnace with inert atmosphere of argon. After obtaining the alloy, it was heat treated at three different heat treatments, namely homogenizing, calcining and simulation solubilization. The phases present were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and microhardness testing

The electric utility business is an inherently dangerous area to work in with employees exposed to many potential hazards daily. One such hazard is an arc flash. An arc flash is a rapid release of energy, referred to as incident energy, caused by an electric arc. Due to the random nature and occurrence of an arc flash, one can only prepare and minimize the extent of harm to themself, other employees and damage to equipment due to such a violent event. Effective January 1, 2009 the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) requires that an arc-flash assessment be performed by companies whose employees work on or near energized equipment to determine the potential exposure to an electric arc. To comply with the NESC requirement, Minnesota Power’s (MP’s) current short circuit and relay coordination software package, ASPEN OneLinerTM and one of the first software packages to implement an arc-flash module, is used to conduct an arc-flash hazard analysis. At the same time, the package is benchmarked against equations provided in the IEEE Std. 1584-2002 and ultimately used to determine the incident energy levels on the MP transmission system. This report goes into the depth of the history of arc-flash hazards, analysis methods, both software and empirical derived equations, issues of concern with calculation methods and the work conducted at MP. This work also produced two offline software products to conduct and verify an offline arc-flash hazard analysis.

After a brief review of the various forms of thermal spraying equipment and processes, descriptions of the basic principles involved and the general functions for which thermally sprayed coatings are used are given. The background of the collaborating company, Metallisation, is described and their position in the overall market discussed, providing a backdrop against which the appropriateness of various project options might be judged. Current arc-spraying equipment is then examined, firstly in terms of the workings of their constituent parts and subsequently by examining the effects of changes in design and in operating parameters both upon equipment operation and the coatings produced. Published literature relating to these matters is reviewed. Literature relating to the production, comminution and propulsion of the particles which form the spray is discussed as are the mechanisms involved at impact with the substrate. Literature on the use of rockets for thermal spraying and induction heating as a process for feedstock melting are also reviewed. Three distinct options for further study are derived and preliminary tests and costings made to allow one option alone, the use of rocket acceleration, to go forward to the experimental phase. A suitable rocket burner was developed, tested and incorporated into an arc-spray system so that the sprayability of the whole could be assessed. Coatings were made using various parameters and these are compared with coatings produced by a standard system. Coatings were examined for macro and micro hardness, cohesive strength, porosity and by microstructural examination. The results indicate a high degree of similarity between the coatings produced by the standard system and the high velocity system. This was surprising in view of the very different atomising media and velocities. Possible causes for this similarity and the general behaviour of this new system and the standard system are discussed before the study reaches its conclusions in not proving the hypothesis that an increase in particle velocity would improve the mechanical properties of arc-sprayed steel coatings. Electric arc furnace steel dust is a by-product of the steelmaking process and contains high amounts of the iron and zinc and significant amounts of lead, chromium, and cadmium. Metal recycling however, is not always economically feasible, especially due to the complex mineralogical composition of this material. In this study an application of this material is presented. Ceramics were produced with clay and variable amounts of steel dust. The bulk material was fired between 800 and 1100 degrees C. The influence of the composition and the processing temperature on the mechanical strength, linear shrinkage, water absorption, apparent density and bending strength and metal leaching of the ceramic samples was investigated. A blend of clay with up to 20% dust yielded ceramics with limited metal contamination risk and may thus be used for structural ceramics production. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the first phase of the redevelopment of the Electric Vehicle Scenario Simulator (EVeSSi) tool. A new methodology to generate traffic demand scenarios for the Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) tool for urban traffic simulation is described. This methodology is based on a Portugal census database to generate a synthetic population for a given area under study. A realistic case study of a Portuguese city, Vila Real, is assessed. For this area the road network was created along with a synthetic population and public transport. The traffic results were obtained and an electric buses fleet was evaluated assuming that the actual fleet would be replaced in a near future. The energy requirements to charge the electric fleet overnight were estimated in order to evaluate the impacts that it would cause in the local electricity network.

O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em projetar, construir e testar um protótipo em laboratório de uma fonte de alimentação de alta tensão que permita descargas elétricas {estáveis e de dimensões reduzidas}, de modo a que possa ser utilizada, dada a sua essencialidade, na fabricação de redes de período longo (LPG) em fibra ótica nos chamados turning points. Estes são pontos de elevada sensibilidade, fundamentais no desenvolvimento tecnológico de sensores em fibra ótica, em particular, de sensores refractométricos. O protótipo da fonte de alimentação é composto por um regulador do tipo BUCK, um inversor para alimentação do transformador de alta tensão, o circuito de realimentação e controlo PWM e um microcontrolador para o comando da fonte. Posteriormente procedeu-se à otimização dos parâmetros de descarga, o que conduziu a fabricação de redes de período longo com períodos inferiores a 150 micrómetros. Este é um resultado sem paralelo a nível internacional no que concerne ao uso da técnica do arco elétrico.

Diplomityössä on kehitetty kaksitasoisen jännitevälipiirillisen taajuusmuuttajan häviöiden simulointiin käytettävä simulointimalli osaksi säädettävän sähkömoottorikäytön simulointityökalua, jolla voidaan analysoida eri säätöalgoritmien, kuormituksen ja kytkentätaajuuden vaikutusta taajuusmuuttajan häviöihin. Aluksi on selvitetty yksityiskohtaisesti taajuusmuuttajan häviölähteet ja häviöiden fysikaalinen tausta. Taajuusmuuttajassa käytettäville komponenteille on esitetty simulointimalleja. Taajuusmuuttajan malli ja häviöiden laskenta-algoritmit on toteutettu C-kielellä. Taajuusmuuttajan malli vastaa perusrakenteeltaan ACS800-02-0260-5 - taajuusmuuttajaa. ACS800-02-0260-5 -taajuusmuuttajan häviöitä on simuloitu erilaisissa kuormitustilanteissa, ja simulointien tueksi taajuusmuuttajan häviöt on pyritty selvittämään laboratoriomittauksin.

Työn tavoitteena oli suurnopeuskuvaustekniikan ottaminen osaksi Kemppi Oy:n tuotekehitystä. Työn teoriaosa sisältää hitsausvalokaaren ja lisäaineensiirtymisen teoriaa,sekä perehtymisen suurnopeuskuvaustekniikkaan ja siihen vaadittaviin laitteistoihin. Teoriassa tarkastellaan myös MIG/MAG -päittäisliitoksen olemassa oleviin pohjapalon hitsausprosesseihin. Kokeellisen osan tuloksena syntyi suurnopeuskuvaustekniikkaan pohjautuva tutkimusmenetelmä. Rakennetulla järjestelmällä nähtiin hyvin teoriassa esitetyt MIG/MAG -hitsauksen kaarityypit ja lisäaineensiirtymisen muodot. Kuvattuja tuloksia kyettiin analysoimaan ja vertaamaan teoriaan. Päittäisliitoksen pohjapalon hitsaukseen soveltuvan prosessin kehitys oli osa käytännön osuutta. Tehdyillä kuvauksilla onnistuttiin havainnoimaan kehitetyn valokaaren ja aineensiirtymisen ilmiöitä. Näiden ymmärtäminen helpottui kuvauksien ansiosta ja tämä nopeutti ja mahdollisti tuotekehitystyötä. Tuloksena valmistui uusi pulssitettu lyhytkaariprosessi. Työn tuloksena syntyi uusi suurnopeuskuvaustekniikkaan nojautuva tuotekehitysprosessi, jossa uusi tekniikka kyetään liittämäänosaksi tutkimus- ja kehitystyötä. Tuloksia voidaan käyttää myös markkinoinnin ja myynnin edistämiseen.

Macroscopic samples of fullerene nanostructures are obtained in a modified arc furnace using the electric arc method with a Helium atmosphere at low pressures. High purity graphite rods are used as electrodes but, when drilled and the orifices filled with powders of transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni) acting as catalysts, the resulting particles are carbon nanostructures of the fullerene family, known as Single Wall Nanotubes (SWNTs). They have typical diameters of 1.4 nm, lengths up to tenths of microns and they are arranged together in bundles containing several SWNTs. Those samples are observed and analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) techniques.

In this study, electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) was thermally modified at different temperatures under H2 flow or charcoal in order to obtain reduced iron phases (Fe3O4, FeO and Fe0). The formation of these phases was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. The tests performed for reducing Cr (VI) using resultant materials obtained after thermal treatment of the EAFD showed excellent results, with PAE600H (EAFD reduced at 600 ºC under H2 flow) decreasing around 100% of the Cr (VI) in only 10 minutes of reaction. These results indicate the possibility of adding value to the residue, obtaining materials that offer great potential for environmental applications.

Työssä toteutettiin C-kielellä luistonestojärjestelmä ja elektroninen tasauspyörästö Simulinkmallien pohjalta hybridityökoneeseen. Hybridityökoneen sähkökäytöt mahdollistavat tarkan vääntömomentin säädön, joka mahdollistaa työssä kuvatun kaltaisen järjestelmän toteuttamisen. Toteutettua järjestelmää simuloitiin MeVEA Oy:n ajoneuvomallinnukseen kehitetyssä simulaattorissa. Lisäksi järjestelmästä kehitettiin Visedo Oy:n sähkökäyttösimulaattoriin sopiva versio, jota testattiin Visedon sähkökäyttöjä simuloivan ohjelman kanssa. Simulointituloksien mukaan luistonesto estää vetäviä pyöriä luistamasta liukkaalla alustalla eikä toisaalta vähennä aiheetta kuljettajan asettamaa vääntömomenttia. Myös sähköinen tasauspyörästö toimi kuten oli suunniteltu. Työssä kehitetty luistonesto tarvitsee toimiakseen tiedon ajoneuvon kokonaismassasta, joten työssä kehitettiin myös tapa ajoneuvon massan estimoimiseksi ajoneuvon kiihdyttäessä. Massan estimointia testattiin pitävällä ja liukkaalla alustalla. Massan estimointi toimi simulaattoriympäristössä hyvällä tarkkuudella.

Esitetyn tutkimuksen tavoite on selvittää yksinkertaisen sähköajoneuvosimulaation avulla sähkökäyttösimulaation ja mekaniikkasimulaation välisen ohjelmallisen rajapinnan toimivuutta ja samalla toteuttaa LUT Energian hybridilaboratorion ensimmäinen rajapintaa hyödyntävä sähkökäytön ja mekaniikan yhdistelmäsimulaatio. Tutkimus on osa Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston hybridikäyttötutkimusta, jossa muun muassa virtuaalisimuloinnin ja in-loop –simulaatioiden avulla tutkitaan raskaiden työkoneiden hybridisoinnin vaikutuksia esimerkiksi niiden suorituskykyyn, energiatehokkuuteen ja käytettävyyteen. Tulokset osoittavat mainitun rajapinnan toimivuuden, mikä mahdollistaa tutkimuksen etenemisen. Lisäksi raportti selvittää virtuaalisimuloinnin keskeisiä käsitteitä (virtual prototyping, hardware-in-the-loop sekä human-in-the-loop –simulointi).

Eu3+ -doped titania-silica planar waveguides were prepared from tetraethylorthotitanate (TEOT) and modified silane 3-amino-propyltriethoxysilane (APTS). Films were deposited on borosilicate glass substrates by a dip-coating technique. The refractive index, the thickness and the total attenuation coefficient of the waveguides were measured at 632.8 and 1550 nm by prism coupling technique. Starting from pure titania films, the addition of modified silane leads to a decrease in the refractive index and an increase in thickness. Squared electric field simulation has shown that the light confinement in the waveguide increases with the silane content of the so]. Emission spectra present a broad emission band due to the modified silane and EU emission transitions arising mainly from the D-5(0) level to the F-7(J) (J = 0-4) manifolds. The dependence of transition intensities and excited state lifetimes on the initial composition and also on the heat treatment performed was interpreted in terms of structural changes occurring during the preparation process.
