From stems of Aristolochia chamissonis Duch., five new diterpenes, one rearranged (4 --> 2)-abeo-clerodane and four ent-clerodanes, were isolated. Their structures were determined to be (+)-(4 --> 2)-abeo-kolavelool-3-oic acid, (-)-13-epi-2-oxokolavelool, (-)-2 beta-hydroxykolavelool, (-)-2 beta-hydroperoxykolavelool and (+)- 13-epi-2 alpha-hydroxykolavelool. In addition, lignans, sesquiterpenes, steroids and two known ent-clerodane diterpenes were isolated. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The investigation of Aristolochia brasiliensis and A. esperanzae afforded 12 clerodane derivatives, including the following six novel ones: rel (5S, 8R, 9S, 10R)-2-oxo-ent-3-cleroden-15-oic acid, rel (5S, 8R, 9S, 10R)-2-oxo-ent-clerod-3,13-dien-15-oic acid methyl ester, (5R, 8R, 9S, 10R)-ent-3-cleroden-15-oic acid, rel (5S, 8R, 9S, 10R)-ent-clerod-3,13-dien-15-oic acid, (2S, 5R, 8R, 9S, 10R)-2-hydroperoxy-ent-3-cleroden-15-oic acid methyl ester and (2S, 5R, 8R, 9S, 10R)-2-hydroperoxy-ent-clerod-3,13-dien-15-oic acid methyl ester. The structures were assigned on the basis of spectral data and derivatization by chemical reactions. The occurrence of this type of diterpene has not previously been reported in Aristolochiaceae. © 1987.

Chemical investigation of the leaves of Guarea trichilioides afforded six diterpenoids, including four labdane and two clerodane derivatives. The following four are new: 3-oxolabd-8(17),12Z,14-triene, 3α-hydroxylabd-8(17),12Z,14-triene, 3β-hydroxylabd-8(17),12Z,14-triene and(-)-2-oxo-13-hydroxy,3,14-clerodandiene. This paper describes a new computer approach for chemotaxonomic studies. The methodology employed enables the search for chemical substructures as taxonomic descriptors using all expert system built with plant natural products. The operation of the system was tested with diterpenes as taxonomic markers in Lamiaceae. © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Ethanolic extracts of the leaves of Casearia sylvestris yielded a novel clerodane diterpene, 15-hydroxy-3-cleroden-2-one, together with the known diterpenes (-)-hardwickiic acid, reported for the first time from this species, and casearins B and G, previously isolated from C. sylvestris. The structures of all four compounds were determined by spectrometric analysis. The new clerodane diterpene and (-)-hardwickiic acid contain structural features that are completely different from the highly oxygenated casearins and casearvestrins isolated from C. sylvestris.

Phytochemical examination of Aristolochia cymbifera, A. esperanzae and A. galeata led to the isolation of furofuran and dibenzylbutyrolactone type lignans, as well as of clerodane and ent-labdane type diterpenes. Structural assignments for two new ent-labdans are presented and discussed. © 1988.

This work describes the creation of heuristics rules based on 13C-NMR spectroscopy that characterize several skeletal types of diterpenes. Using a collection of 2745 spectra we built a database linked to the expert system SISTEMAT. Several programs were applied to the database in order to discover characteristic signals that identify with a good performance, a large diversity of skeletal types. The heuristic approach used was able to differentiate groups of skeletons based firstly on the number of primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary carbons, and secondly the program searches, for each group, if there are ranges of chemical shifts that identifies specific skeletal type. The program was checked with 100 new structures recently published and was able to identify the correct skeleton in 65 of the studied cases. When the skeleton has several hundreds of compounds, for example, the labdanes, the program employs the concept of subskeletal, and does not classify in the same group labdanes with double bounds at different positions. The chemical shift ranges for each subskeletal types and the structures of all skeletal types are given. The consultation program can be obtained from the authors. © 1997 - IOS Press. Two new cassane butenolides, caesalpinolide A (1) and B (2), epimeric at the hemiketal position were isolated from the marine creeper Caesalpinia bonduc. The structures were elucidated by the analysis of spectroscopic data and relative stereochemistry was assigned on the basis of ROESY correlations. Compounds 1 and 2 were found to inhibit MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines with ICso values of (IlM)12.8 and 6.1, respectively, along with the inhibition of endometrial and cervical cancer cell lines

An Australian population of the nudibranch mollusk Glossodoris atromarginata has been found to contain furanoditerpenes of the spongian series. Spongia-13(16),14-dien-3-one (1) and 3 beta-acetoxy-19-hydroxyspongia-13(16),14-dien-2-one (2) were isolated for the first time from a natural source, along with a series of known diterpenes (3-7). Anatomical dissection of the animals revealed the relative distribution and chemical variation of secondary metabolites. Structural studies have provided a basis for chemical comparisons between populations from different geographic locations.
