Multimode polymer waveguides are an attractive transmission medium for board-level optical links as they provide high bandwidth, relaxed alignment tolerances, and can be directly integrated onto conventional printed circuit boards. However, the performance of multimode waveguide components depends on the launch conditions at the component input, complicating their use in topologies that require the concatenation of multiple multimode components. This paper presents key polymer components for a multichannel optical bus and reports their performance under different launch conditions, enabling useful rules that can be used to design complex interconnection topologies to be derived. The components studied are multimode signal splitters and combiners, 90°-crossings, S-bends, and 90°-bends. By varying the width of the splitter arms, a splitting ratio between 1% and 95% is achieved from the 1 × 2 splitters, while low-loss signal combining is demonstrated with the waveguide combiners. It is shown that a 3 dB improvement in the combiner excess loss can be achieved by increasing the bus width by 50 μm. The worst-case insertion loss of 50 × 100 μm waveguide crossings is measured to be 0.1 dB/crossing. An empirical method is proposed and used to estimate the insertion losses of on-board optical paths of a polymeric four-channel optical bus module. Good agreement is achieved between the predicted and measured values. Although the components and empirical method have been tailored for use in a multichannel optical bus architecture, they can be used for any on-board optical interconnection topology. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

This paper deals with the dynamic rheological behavior of polypropylene/polyamide6 (PP/PA6) uncompatibilized blends and those compatibilized with a maleic anhydride grafted PP (PP/PP-g-MAH/PA6). The terminal relaxation times of the blends predicted by the Palierne emulsion model were compared with those obtained from experimental relaxation time spectra. The Palierne model succeeded well in describing PP/PA6 uncompatibilized blends with relatively low dispersed phase contents (10 wt%) and failed doing so for those of which the dispersed contents were high (30 wt%). It also failed for the compatibilized ones, irrespective of the dispersed phase content (10 or 30 wt%) and whether or not interface relaxation was taken into consideration. In the case of the uncompatibilized blend with high dispersed-phase content, interconnections among inclusions of the dispersed phase were responsible for the failure of the Palierne model. As for the compatiblized blends, in addition to particle interconnections, the existence of emulsion-in-emulsion (EE) structures was another factor responsible for the failure of Palieme model.

Evaporation of a droplet of silica microsphere suspension on a polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) blend film with isolated holes in its surface has been exploited as a means of particles self-assembly. During the retraction of the contact line of the droplet, spontaneous dewetting combined with the strong capillary force pack the silica microspheres into the holes in the polymer surface. Complex aggregates of colloids are formed after being exposed to acetone vapor. The morphology evolution of the underlying polymer film by exposure to acetone solvent vapor is responsible for the complex aggregates of colloids formation.

Ternary europium complexes with thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) and phenanthroline (phen) were incorporated into SiO2/polymer matrix by a sol-gel method. The gels exhibit the characteristic emission bands of europium ion. In addition, Eu3+ presents a longer fluorescence lifetime in gel than in the corresponding pure complex powder. Concentration effects on the luminescence intensity were investigated. The reasons that are responsible for above results are also discussed in the context.

The sequence distribution of the monomeric units in the styrene-acrylic acid copolymer has been obtained by calculation. The probability of long sequences of styrene increases with an increase in the content of the monomer in the copolymer. The highest distribution of short sequences of styrene takes place for the copolymer containing equimolecular amounts of styrene and acrylic acid. The copolymer which has this latter structure is inadequate for the synthesis of highly active supported complexes. When the distributions of long and short sequences of styrene are approximately equal, the activity of the Nd and Fe prepared polymer complexes is higher.

Molecular theories of shear thickening and shear thinning in associative polymer networks are typically united in that they involve a single kinetic parameter that describes the network -- a relaxation time that is related to the lifetime of the associative bonds. Here we report the steady-shear behavior of two structurally identical metallo-supramolecular polymer networks, for which single-relaxation parameter models break down in dramatic fashion. The networks are formed by the addition of reversible cross-linkers to semidilute entangled solutions of PVP in DMSO, and they differ only in the lifetime of the reversible cross-links. Shear thickening is observed for cross-linkers that have a slower dissociation rate (17 s(-1)), while shear thinning is observed for samples that have a faster dissociation rate (ca. 1400 s(-1)). The difference in the steady shear behavior of the unentangled vs. entangled regime reveals an unexpected, additional competing relaxation, ascribed to topological disentanglement in the semidilute entangled regime that contributes to the rheological properties.

Organic light emitting diode devices employing organometallic Nd(9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one)(3) complexes as near infrared emissive dopants dispersed within poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host matrices have been fabricated by spin-casting layers of the doped polymer onto glass/indium tin oxide (ITO)/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT) substrates. Room temperature electroluminescence, centered at similar to 1065 nm. was observed from devices top contacted by evaporated aluminum or calcium metal cathodes and was assigned to transitions between the F-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) levels of the Nd3+ ions. In particular, a near infrared irradiance of 8.5 nW/mm(2) and an external quantum efficiency of 0.007% was achieved using glass/ITO/PEDOT/PVK:Nd(9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one)(3)/Ca/Al devices. Photoluminescence and electroluminescence of PVK films doped with fac-[ClRe(CO)(3)(bpy)], bpy=2,2`-bipyridine, are investigated. Photoluminescence spectra of spin-coated PVK films (lambda(exc)=290 nm) exhibit a broad band centered at 405 nm. As the concentration of dopant increases, the polymer emission is quenched and a band at 555 nm appears (isosbestic point at 475 nm). In OLEDs with ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK/butylPBD/Al architecture doped with fac-[ClRe(CO)(3)(bpy)], the polymer host emission is completely quenched even at the lowest concentration of dopant. The electroluminescence spectra of the devices show that there is an efficient energy transfer from the host to the dopant, which exhibits a very intense emission at 580 nm. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.

Gels are elastic porous polymer networks that are accompanied by pronounced mechanical properties. Due to their biocompatibility, ‘responsive hydrogels’ (HG) have many biomedical applications ranging from biosensors and drug delivery to tissue engineering. They respond to external stimuli such as temperature and salt by changing their dimensions. Of paramount importance is the ability to engineer penetrability and diffusion of interacting molecules in the crowded HG environment, as this would enable one to optimize a specific functionality. Even though the conditions under which biomedical devices operate are rather complex, a bottom-up approach could reduce the complexity of mutually coupled parameters influencing tracer mobility. The present thesis focuses on the interaction-induced tracer diffusion in polymer solutions and their homologous gels, probed by means of Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS). This is a single-molecule-sensitive technique having the advantage of optimal performance under ultralow tracer concentrations, typically employed in biosensors. Two different types of hydrogels have been investigated, a conventional one with broad polydispersity in the distance between crosslink points and a so-called ‘ideal’, with uniform mesh size distribution. The former is based on a thermoresponsive polymer, exhibiting phase separation in water at temperatures close to the human body temperature. The latter represents an optimal platform to study tracer diffusion. Mobilities of different tracers have been investigated in each network, varying in size, geometry and in terms of tracer-polymer attractive strength, as perturbed by different stimuli. The thesis constitutes a systematic effort towards elucidating the role of the strength and nature of different tracer-polymer interactions, on tracer mobilities; it outlines that interactions can still be very important even in the simplified case of dilute polymer solutions; it also demonstrates that the presence of permanent crosslinks exerts distinct tracer slowdown, depending on the tracer type and the nature of the tracer-polymer interactions, expressed differently by each tracer with regard to the selected stimulus. In aqueous polymer solutions, the tracer slowdown is found to be system-dependent and no universal trend seems to hold, in contrast to predictions from scaling theory for non-interacting nanoparticle mobility and empirical relations concerning the mesh size in polymer solutions. Complex tracer dynamics in polymer networks may be distinctly expressed by FCS, depending on the specific synergy among-at least some of - the following parameters: nature of interactions, external stimuli employed, tracer size and type, crosslink density and swelling ratio.
