Effective suppression of bystander effects by DMSO treatment of irradiated CHO cells

Evidence is accumulating that irradiated cells produce some signals which interact with non-exposed cells in the same population via a bystander effect. Here, we examined whether DMSO is effective in suppressing radiation induced bystander effects in CHO and repair deficient xrs5 cells. When 1 Gy-irradiated CHO cells were treated with 0.5% DMSO for 1 hr before irradiation, the induction of micronuclei in irradiated cells was suppressed to 80% of that in non-treated irradiated cells. The suppressive effect of DMSO on the formation of bystander signals was examined and the results demonstrated that 0.5% DMSO treatment of irradiated cells completely suppressed the induction of micronuclei by the bystander effect in non-irradiated cells. It is suggested that irradiated cells ceased signal formation for bystander effects by the action of DMSO. To determine the involvement of reactive oxygen species on the formation of bystander signals, we examined oxidative stress levels using the DCFH staining method in irradiated populations. The results showed that the treatment of irradiated cells with 0.5% DMSO did not suppress oxidative stress levels. These results suggest that the prevention of oxidative stress is independent of the suppressive effect of DMSO on the formation of the bystander signal in irradiated cells. It is suggested that increased ROS in irradiated cells is not a substantial trigger of a bystander signal.

A "Portrait" of Book XII of the Æneid: the Mosaic of the «House of the Medusa» (Alter do Chão, Portugal)

This paper addresses the study of a mosaic discovered in 2007 at the archaeological site of Alter do Chão, Portugal, whose central panel represents the penultimate scene narrated in the last Book of the Æneid – a Roman epic composed by the poet Publius Vergilius Maro (70 BC – AD 19), at the request of Gaius Julius Cæsar Octavianus Augustus (63 BC – AD 14): it shows the very moment when Turnus, the Latin king of the Rutuli, kneels before Æneas, considered the precursor to the foundation of Rome (Virgil, Æneid, XII, 926-950).

Influence de deux milieux séquentiels pour la culture d'embryons sur la production d'hormone gonadotrophine chorionique et de progestérone par des cellules JEG-3 et BeWo [Effects of different embryo development media on hCG and progesterone release by JEG-3 and BeWo cells]

Current in vitro fertilisation (IVF) practice requires synchronisation between the¦environment of cultured oocytes and embryos and the surroundings to what they would have¦been exposed to in vivo. Commercial, sequential media follow this requirement but their exact¦composition is not available. We have compared two widely used IVF culture media systems using¦the two choriocarcinoma cell lines JEG-3 and BeWo. The two hormones hCG and progesterone¦were determined in the culture supernatants as endpoints. In both cell lines, but in a more¦pronounced way in JEG-3, progesterone rather than hCG production was stimulated, and a¦higher hormone release was observed in the fertilisation than in the cleavage media. Differences¦between manufacturers were small and did not favour one system over the other. Le corps, lieu de l'expérience des limites? Réflexions à partir de la littérature chrétienne antique (Ascension d'Esaïe 6 et Recconnaissances II,61-66, en écho à 2 Co 12,1-11)

(Résumé de l'ouvrage) Dans cet ouvrage réunissant théologiens et philosophes, le corps contemporain est pensé par rapport à ce qui l'excède, ce qui le met en scène, ce qui le reprend, ce qui le transforme aujourd'hui. Dans une première partie, l'ouvrage propose des éclairages sur le corps à partir de ce qui met en question sa vision strictement rationnelle. Puis, trois auteurs évoquent les différentes manières dont la Bible, la philosophie et la littérature contemporaine mettent en scène les corps. Dans une troisième partie, sont abordées des questions plus spécifiquement reliées à la tradition catholique, au christianisme primitif et à la pratique de l'ascèse. Enfin, quatre contributions explorent le défi posé par la déréalisation du corps dans nos sociétés d'aujourd'hui, avec, pour clore l'ensemble, une réflexion sur le dualisme qui traverse le questionnement sur le corps.
