Re-thinking Middle Eastern democracy : lessons from ancient Mesopotamia

The issue of Middle Eastern democracy has long inspired lively academic debate and research from across the ideological and political spectrum. Despite their differences, much of this work measures the successes and failures of Middle Eastern democracy against the Western model, with its antecedents in the political machinations found in Athens during the 5th century B.C. However, there is growing evidence to suggest that the history of democracy began on the other side of the Occidental/Oriental line and can be traced as far back as the early Mesopotamian myths of Enuma Elish, through to the grand empires of the Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians and Phoenicians. In the interest of fostering a liberal, democratic and egalitarian Middle East, this paper concludes by suggesting that one strategy for re-thinking the Middle East’s democratisation is to engage the powerful discourses of the Middle East’s ancient, and democratic, past.

Twentieth Century Delta δC Variability in Surface Water Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Recorded by Coralline Algae in the Northern North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea

The oxygen isotopic composition and Mg/Ca ratios in the skeletons of long-lived coralline algae record ambient seawater temperature over time. Similarly, the carbon isotopic composition in the skeletons record delta(13)C values of ambient seawater dissolved inorganic carbon. Here, we measured delta(13)C in the coralline alga Clathromorphum nereostratum to test the feasibility of reconstructing the intrusion of anthropogenic CO(2) into the northern North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. The delta(13)C was measured in the high Mgcalcite skeleton of three C. nereostratum specimens from two islands 500 km apart in the Aleutian archipelago. In the records spanning 1887 to 2003, the average decadal rate of decline in delta(13)C values increased from 0.03% yr(-1) in the 1960s to 0.095% yr(-1) in the 1990s, which was higher than expected due to solely the delta(13)C-Suess effect. Deeper water in this region exhibits higher concentrations of CO(2) and low delta(13)C values. Transport of deeper water into surface water (i.e., upwelling) increases when the Aleutian Low is intensified. We hypothesized that the acceleration of the delta(13)C decline may result from increased upwelling from the 1960s to 1990s, which in turn was driven by increased intensity of the Aleutian Low. Detrended delta(13)C records also varied on 4-7 year and bidecadal timescales supporting an atmospheric teleconnection of tropical climate patterns to the northern North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea manifested as changes in upwelling.

Thermodynamic measurements of b.c.c. Cr-Mn solid solutions at 1373 K

Thermodynamics of Cr-Mn alloys have been studied by Eremenko et al (l) using a fused salt e.m.f.technique. Their results indicate positive deviations from ideality at 1023 K. Kaufman (2) has independently estimated negative enthaipy and excess entropy for the b.c.c. Cr-Mn alloys, such that at high temperatures, the entropy term predominates over the enthalpy term giving positive deviations from ideality. Recently the thermodynamic properties of the alloys have been measured by 3acob (3) using a Knudsen cell technique in the temperature range of 1200 to 1500 K. The results indicate mild negative deviations from ideality over the entire composition range. Because of the differences in the reported results and Mn being a volatile component in the alloys which leads to surface depletion under a dynamic set up, an isopiestic technique is used to measure the properties of the alloys.

In the unit cell the molecules are stabilized by O-HctdotO hydrogen bonds in both the structures, however an additional C-HctdotO interaction is observed in the case of Lantadene-C.

A Microscopic Theory of the f.c.c.-b.c.c. Interface .

We present a first-principles theory of the equilibrium b.c.c.-f.c.c. interface at coexistence using the density functional method. We assume that the interfacial region has local body-centred tetragonal (b.c.t.) symmetry and predict typical interfacial widths to be of order 2 to 3 lattice spacings with typical energies close to 0.05 J/m2. These quantities are in good agreement with laboratory measurements on coherent interfaces.
