Development of Novel Polymer based Adhesives

Novel latex based and solution based adhesives were prepared and evaluated for wood to wood bonding.These adhesive were found to be superior to commercical adhesives like fevicol and dentrite.Novel adhesives were prepared for leather to leather bonding and these were also found to be more efficientt than the polyurethane type and dentrite adhesives used commercially.A novel strip adhesive system employing very low amount of solvents was tried successfully for rubber-to-metal bonding.Further ,a novel adhesive system was investigated successfully for bonding copper coated bead wire and steel cord to rubber by modifying it with chloroprene rubber.

Energy optimisation studies in trawling operations along the Kerala coast

This study mainly deals with the structure of the motorised and mechanised trawl fishing fleet of Kerala, and assess the availability of resources and its extent of exploitation. The study is conducted by observing the performance of small motorised boats operating trawl nets from selected centers along the Kerala coast. The Study also deals with the type and material of construction of the propellers used in selected crafts and the efficiency of the propeller. The fuel consumption pattern of selected medium sized trawlers economics of operation of selected fishing crafts are analyzed through this study. ”Studies on Selected conducting polymers for Microwave and Electrical Applications

The electrical properties of polymers make up an inherently interdisciplinary topic, being closely associated, on the one hand, with the mechanical properties of polymers polarization and relaxation) and, on the other hand, with the semi conductive properties (conduction and break down). In addition, unlike conventional technologies, which use these properties in its various applications like antistatic coatings, rechargeable batteries, sensors, electrochromic devices, electrochemical devices etc, microwave technology extract the microwave absorbing ability of electrically conducting polymers. The conducting polymers are widely used in its potential applications like electro magnetic interference shielding, satellite communication links, beam steering radars, frequency selective surfaces etc. Considering the relevance of microwave applications of conducting polymers, the study of microwave properties of conducting polymers stands poised to become a compelling choice for synthetic chemists and condensed - matter physicists, physical chemists and material scientists, electrochemists and polymer scientists. The main aim of the present work is to study the microwave and low frequency properties of various conducting polymers, conducting semi-interpenetrating networks, conducting copolymers and to characterise it. Also this thesis collated the microwave properties of these conducting systems and exposes the various technologically important applications in the industrial, scientific, communication and defence applications.

Pattern Analysis Techniques for the Recognition of Unconstrained Handwritten Malayalam Character Images

Distribution, extracellular virulence factors and antibiogram of motile aeromonads in fresh water ornamental fishes and immune response of Cyprinus carpio against Aeromonas hydrophila infection

The thesis deals with the prevalence and distribution of motile aeromonads in selected ornamental fishes. The presence of motile aeromonads in ornamental fishes and associated carriage water is well documented. Though aeromonads are a part of autochthonous flora of natural waters, disease outbreak occurs as a result of environmental stress on the cultured species and virulence of the pathogens. While ornamental aquaculture in many parts of the world is highly organized and practiced scientifically, it is highly unorganized in India. The culture ponds/tanks are often maintained in very poor manner and the fishes are subjected to high degree of stress during transportation from the production facility to retail vendors. The situation is no better at retail outlets, where fishes are maintained in crowded condition without proper aeration or food. All these could result in high prevalence of diseases caused by motile aeromonads. No systematic study has been carried out to understand the prevalence of motile aeromonads in ornamental fishes and carriage water . It also gives an account of the production of extracellular virulence factors and the antibiogram of the different species of motile aeromonads isolated. The growth characteristics and virulence potential of a representative strain of Aeromonas hydrophila is also studied. The nucleotide sequencing of the strain was carried out and sequences deposited in Genbank. Survival and immune response of Cyprinus carpio under different stress conditions and on probiotic treatment with Bacillus NL110, when challenged with A. hydrophila is also dealt within this thesis.
