The datasets present measurements of cDOM absorption of lakes located in Antarctic oasis during the summer periods from 2013 to 2016. In summer season of 2013 water samples were collected on Fildes Peninsula (King George Island, West Antarctica) - Bellingshausen Station, Russia. Investigated lakes on Fides Peninsula were completely or partly free from ice cover during water sampling. In summer seasons of 2014-2016 water samples were collected on Vestfold Hills, Reuer Island and Larsemann Hills Oasis (East Antarctica) - Progress station, Russia. During 2014-2016 summer season part of lakes on Larsemann Hills Oasis were free from ice cover, some of the lakes were completely covered by ice and were drilled before sampling. Part of the water samples from Progress Station (2015) has not been filtered. cDOM is operationally defined by the chosen filter pore size. Samples have been consistently filtrated through 0.7 µm pore size glas fibre filters. cDOM filtrates have been stored in darkness and have been measured after the expedition using the dual-beam Specord200 laboratory spectrometer (Jena Analytik) at the Otto Schmidt Laboratory OSL, Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. The OSL cDOM protocol (Heim and Roessler, 2016) prescribes 3 Absorbance (A) measurements per sample from UV to 750 nm against ultra-pure water. The absorption coefficient, a, is calculated by a = 2.303A/L, where L is the pathlength of the cuvette [m], and the factor 2.303 converts log10 to loge. The output of the calculation is a continuous spectrum of a. The cDOM a spectra are used to determine the exponential slope value for specific wavelength ranges, S by fitting the data between min and max wavelength to an exponential function. We provide cDOM absorption coefficients for the wavelengths 254, 260, 350, 375, 400, 412, 440, 443 nm [1/m] and Slope values for three different UV, VIS, wavelength ranges: 275 to 295 nm, 350 to 400 nm, 300 to 500 nm [1/nm]. All data were carried out by scientists from Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute and Saint Petersburg State University of Russia during Russian Antarctic Expedition in 2013-2016.

The datasets present measurements of cDOM absorption in lakes, rivers and streams of Yamal and Gydan Peninsula area during the summer periods from 2012-2014 and 2016. In summer seasons of 2012 - 2013 water samples was collected during "Yamal-Arctic" Expedition. All of the research areas were located near the coastline of Yamal, Yavay, and Gydan Peninsula and Bely Island. In 2012 water samples from rivers, lakes and streams were taken near New Port, Cape Kamenny and Tambey settlements and in basins (water catchments) of the Sabetta, Seyakha, Yuribey (Baydaratskaya Bay, Gydan Peninsula) and Mongocheyakha rivers. In 2013 water samples from rivers, lakes and streams were taken in the Yavai Peninsula, Yayne Vong bay and in the basins (water catchments) of the Sabetta, Mongocheyakha and Yuribey (Gydan Peninsula) rivers. In 2014 lakes were sampled in the Erkuta River basin, south of Yamal Peninsula. In 2016 lakes and rivers were sampled it the Erkuta River basin and Polar Ural area. cDOM is operationally defined by the chosen filter pore size. This thesis presents a detailed numerical analysis, fabrication method and experimental investigation on 45º tilted fiber gratings (45º-TFGs) and excessively tilted fiber gratings (Ex-TFGs), and their applications in fiber laser and sensing systems. The one of the most significant contributions of the work reported in this thesis is that the 45º-TFGs with high polarization extinction ratio (PER) have been fabricated in single mode telecom and polarization maintaining (PM) fibers with spectral response covering three prominent optic communication and central wavelength ranges at 1060nm, 1310nm and 1550nm. The most achieved PERs for the 45º-TFGs are up to and greater than 35-50dB, which have reached and even exceeded many commercial in-fiber polarizers. It has been proposed that the 45º-TFGs of high PER can be used as ideal in-fiber polarizers for a wide range of fiber systems and applications. In addition, in-depth detailed theoretical models and analysis have been developed and systematic experimental evaluation has been conducted producing results in excellent agreement with theoretical modeling. Another important outcome of the research work is the proposal and demonstration of all fiber Lyot filters (AFLFs) implemented by utilizing two (for a single stage type) and more (for multi-stage) 45º-TFGs in PM fiber cavity structure. The detailed theoretical analysis and modelling of such AFLFs have also been carried out giving design guidance for the practical implementation. The unique function advantages of 45º-TFG based AFLFs have been revealed, showing high finesse multi-wavelength transmission of single polarization and wide range of tuneability. The temperature tuning results of AFLFs have shown that the AFLFs have 60 times higher thermal sensitivity than the normal FBGs, thus permitting thermal tuning rate of ~8nm/10ºC. By using an intra-cavity AFLF, an all fiber soliton mode locking laser with almost total suppression of siliton sidebands, single polarization output and single/multi-wavelength switchable operation has been demonstrated. The final significant contribution is the theoretical analysis and experimental verification on the design, fabrication and sensing application of Ex-TFGs. The Ex-TFG sensitivity model to the surrounding medium refractive index (SRI) has been developed for the first time, and the factors that affect the thermal and SRI sensitivity in relation to the wavelength range, tilt angle, and the size of cladding have been investigated. As a practical SRI sensor, an 81º-TFG UV-inscribed in the fiber with small (40μm) cladding radius has shown an SRI sensitivity up to 1180nm/RIU in the index of 1.345 range. Finally, to ensure single polarization detection in such an SRI sensor, a hybrid configuration by UV-inscribing a 45º-TFG and an 81º-TFG closely on the same piece of fiber has been demonstrated as a more advanced SRI sensing system.

In this paper we proposed a demodulation scheme based on tunable FP filter for the WDM/FDM sensing system of the microstructure mentioned in the previous work. Simulation is done to prove the feasibility of demodulating the microstructure with the tunable FP filter. The experiments result showed high consistence with the simulation. And with the help of the high speed FPGA module and a high resolution AD/DA card, the system has achieved a very high resolution, up to 2.5 pm, and wavelength ranges 1520nm to 1590 nm.

Die zunehmende Luftverschmutzung aufgrund des steigenden Energiebedarfs und Mobilitätsanspruchs der Bevölkerung, insbesondere in urbanen Gebieten, erhöht das Gefährdungspotential für die Gesundheit und verschlechtert so die Lebensqualität. Neben der Vermeidung von Emissionen toxischer Gase als mittel- und langfristig optimale Maßnahme zur Verbesserung der Luftqualität, stellt der Abbau emittierter Luftschadstoffe ein geeignetes und kurzfristig wirksames Mittel dar. Ein solcher Abbau kann durch Photokatalyse erzielt werden, allerdings nutzen Photokatalysatoren, die auf dem Halbleiter Titandioxid (TiO2) basieren, das solare Emissionsspektrum nur geringfüfig aus und sind in Innenräumen und anderen UV-schwachen Bereichen nicht wirksam. Um diese Nachteile zu überwinden, wurde ein Photokatalysator entwickelt und hergestellt, der aus TiO2 (P25) als UV-aktiver Photokatalysator und als Trägermaterial sowie einem seinerseits im Vis-Bereich photoaktiven Porphyrazin-Farbstoff als Beschichtung besteht. Die sterisch anspruchsvollen und in der Peripherie mit acht Bindungsmotiven für TiO2 versehenen Farbstoffmoleküle wurden zu diesem Zweck auf der Halbleiteroberfläche immobilisiert. Die so gebildeten Porphyrazin-Titandioxid-Hybride wurde ausführlich charakterisiert. Dabei wurden unter anderem die Bindung der Farbstoffe auf der Titandioxidoberfläche mittels Adsorptionsisothermen und die UV/Vis-spektroskopischen Eigenschaften des Hybridmaterials untersucht. Zur Bestimmung der photokatalytischen Aktivitäten der Einzelkomponenten und des Hybridmaterials wurden diese auf die Fähigkeit zur Bildung von Singulett-Sauerstoff, Wasserstoffperoxid und Hydroxylradikalen hin sowie in einem an die ISO-22197-1 angelehnten Verfahren auf die Fähigkeit zum Abbau von NO hin jeweils bei Bestrahlung in drei Wellenlängenbereichen (UV-Strahlung, blaues Licht und rotes Licht) geprüft. Darüber hinaus konnte die Aktivität des Hybridmaterials bei der Photodynamischen Inaktivierung (PDI) von Bakterien unter UV- und Rotlichtbestrahlung im Vergleich zum reinen Ttandioxid bestimmt werden. Die Charakterisierung des Hybridmaterials ergab, dass die Farbstoffmoleküle in einer neutralen Suspension nahezu irreversibel in einer monomolekularen Schicht mit einer Bindungsenergie von -41.43 kJ/mol an die Oberfläche gebunden sind und das Hybridmaterial mit hohen Extinktionskoeffizienten von bis zu 105 M-1cm-1 in großen Bereichen des UV/Vis-Spektrums Photonen absorbiert. Das Spektrum des Hybridmaterials setzt sich dabei additiv aus den beiden Einzelspektren zusammen. Die Auswirkungen der Charakterisierungsergebnisse auf die Bildung reaktiver Sauerstoffspezies wurden ausführlich diskutiert. Der Vergleich der Aktivitäten in Bezug auf die Bildung der reaktiven Sauerstoffspezies zeigte, dass die Aktivität des Hybridmaterials bis auf die bei der Bildung von Hydroxylradikalen unter UV-Bestrahlung in allen Versuchen deutlich höher war als die Aktivität des reinen Titandioxids. Im Gegensatz zu reinem Titandioxid erzeugte das Hybridmaterial in allen untersuchten Wellenlängenbereichen Mengen an Singulett-Sauerstoff, die photophysikalisch eindeutig detektierbar waren. Zur Erklärung und Deutung dieser Beobachtungen wurde eine differenzierte Diskussion geführt, die die Ergebnisse der Hybridpartikelcharakterisierung aufgreift und implementiert. Der Vergleich der NO-Abbaueffizienzen ergab bei allen Experimenten durchgängig deutlich höhere Werte für das Hybridmaterial. Zudem wurden durch das Hybridmaterial nachgewiesenermaßen wesentlich geringere Mengen des unerwünschten Nebenprodukts des Abbaus (NO2) gebildet. Im Zuge der Diskussion wurden verschiedene mögliche Mechanismen der „sauberen“ Oxidation zu Nitrat durch das Hybridmaterial vorgestellt. Untersuchungen zur Photodynamischen Inaktivierung verschiedener Bakterien ergaben, dass das Hybridmaterial neben einer zu P25 ähnlichen Aktivität unter UV-Bestrahlung, anders als P25, auch eine PDI verschiedener Bakterien unter Rotlichtbestrahlung erreicht.

In this paper the resonant wavelength of a long period fiber grating (LPG) is tuned toward longer wavelength by etching the fiber, For LP04 and LP05 cladding modes', the tuning ranges of 23 and 81 nm are achieved, respectively. This Doctoral Thesis entitled Contribution to the analysis, design and assessment of compact antenna test ranges at millimeter wavelengths aims to deepen the knowledge of a particular antenna measurement system: the compact range, operating in the frequency bands of millimeter wavelengths. The thesis has been developed at Radiation Group (GR), an antenna laboratory which belongs to the Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications department (SSR), from Technical University of Madrid (UPM). The Radiation Group owns an extensive experience on antenna measurements, running at present four facilities which operate in different configurations: Gregorian compact antenna test range, spherical near field, planar near field and semianechoic arch system. The research work performed in line with this thesis contributes the knowledge of the first measurement configuration at higher frequencies, beyond the microwaves region where Radiation Group features customer-level performance. To reach this high level purpose, a set of scientific tasks were sequentially carried out. Those are succinctly described in the subsequent paragraphs. A first step dealed with the State of Art review. The study of scientific literature dealed with the analysis of measurement practices in compact antenna test ranges in addition with the particularities of millimeter wavelength technologies. Joint study of both fields of knowledge converged, when this measurement facilities are of interest, in a series of technological challenges which become serious bottlenecks at different stages: analysis, design and assessment. Thirdly after the overview study, focus was set on Electromagnetic analysis algorithms. These formulations allow to approach certain electromagnetic features of interest, such as field distribution phase or stray signal analysis of particular structures when they interact with electromagnetic waves sources. Properly operated, a CATR facility features electromagnetic waves collimation optics which are large, in terms of wavelengths. Accordingly, the electromagnetic analysis tasks introduce an extense number of mathematic unknowns which grow with frequency, following different polynomic order laws depending on the used algorithmia. In particular, the optics configuration which was of our interest consisted on the reflection type serrated edge collimator. The analysis of these devices requires a flexible handling of almost arbitrary scattering geometries, becoming this flexibility the nucleus of the algorithmia’s ability to perform the subsequent design tasks. This thesis’ contribution to this field of knowledge consisted on reaching a formulation which was powerful at the same time when dealing with various analysis geometries and computationally speaking. Two algorithmia were developed. While based on the same principle of hybridization, they reached different order Physics performance at the cost of the computational efficiency. Inter-comparison of their CATR design capabilities was performed, reaching both qualitative as well as quantitative conclusions on their scope. In third place, interest was shifted from analysis - design tasks towards range assessment. Millimetre wavelengths imply strict mechanical tolerances and fine setup adjustment. In addition, the large number of unknowns issue already faced in the analysis stage appears as well in the on chamber field probing stage. Natural decrease of dynamic range available by semiconductor millimeter waves sources requires in addition larger integration times at each probing point. These peculiarities increase exponentially the difficulty of performing assessment processes in CATR facilities beyond microwaves. The bottleneck becomes so tight that it compromises the range characterization beyond a certain limit frequency which typically lies on the lowest segment of millimeter wavelength frequencies. However the value of range assessment moves, on the contrary, towards the highest segment. This thesis contributes this technological scenario developing quiet zone probing techniques which achieves substantial data reduction ratii. Collaterally, it increases the robustness of the results to noise, which is a virtual rise of the setup’s available dynamic range. In fourth place, the environmental sensitivity of millimeter wavelengths issue was approached. It is well known the drifts of electromagnetic experiments due to the dependance of the re sults with respect to the surrounding environment. This feature relegates many industrial practices of microwave frequencies to the experimental stage, at millimeter wavelengths. In particular, evolution of the atmosphere within acceptable conditioning bounds redounds in drift phenomena which completely mask the experimental results. The contribution of this thesis on this aspect consists on modeling electrically the indoor atmosphere existing in a CATR, as a function of environmental variables which affect the range’s performance. A simple model was developed, being able to handle high level phenomena, such as feed - probe phase drift as a function of low level magnitudes easy to be sampled: relative humidity and temperature. With this model, environmental compensation can be performed and chamber conditioning is automatically extended towards higher frequencies. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to go further into the knowledge of millimetre wavelengths involving compact antenna test ranges. This knowledge is dosified through the sequential stages of a CATR conception, form early low level electromagnetic analysis towards the assessment of an operative facility, stages for each one of which nowadays bottleneck phenomena exist and seriously compromise the antenna measurement practices at millimeter wavelengths.

Butterfly long-wavelength (L) photopigments are interesting for comparative studies of adaptive evolution because of the tremendous phenotypic variation that exists in their wavelength of peak absorbance (lambda(max) value). Here we present a comprehensive survey of L photopigment variation by measuring lambda(max) in 12 nymphalid and 1 riodinid species using epi-microspectrophotometry. Together with previous data, we find that L photopigment lambda(max) varies from 510-565 nm in 22 nymphalids, with an even broader 505- to 600-nm range in riodinids. We then surveyed the L opsin genes for which lambda(max) values are available as well as from related taxa and found 2 instances of L opsin gene duplication within nymphalids, in Hermeuptychia hermes and Amathusia phidippus, and 1 instance within riodinids, in the metalmark butterfly Apodemia mormo. Using maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood ancestral state reconstructions to map the evolution of spectral shifts within the L photopigments of nymphalids, we estimate the ancestral pigment had a lambda(max) = 540 nm +/- 10 nm standard error and that blueshifts in wavelength have occurred at least 4 times within the family. We used ancestral state reconstructions to investigate the importance of several amino acid substitutions (Ile17Met, Ala64Ser, Asn70Ser, and Ser137Ala) previously shown to have evolved under positive selection that are correlated with blue spectral shifts. These reconstructions suggest that the Ala64Ser substitution has indeed occurred along the newly identified blueshifted L photopigment lineages. Substitutions at the other 3 sites may also be involved in the functional diversification of L photopigments. Our data strongly suggest that there are limits to the evolution of L photopigment spectral shifts among species with only one L opsin gene and that opsin gene duplication broadens the potential range of lambda(max) values.

The average structure (CI) of a volcanic plagioclase megacryst with composition Ano, from the Hogarth Ranges, Australia, has been determined using three-dimensional, singlecrystal neutron and X-ray diffraction data. Least squaresr efinements, incorporating anisotropic thermal motion of all atoms and an extinction correction, resulted in weighted R factors (based on intensities) of 0.076 and 0.056, respectively, for the neutron and X-ray data. Very weak e reflections could be detected in long-exposure X-ray and electron diffraction photographs of this crystal, but the refined average structure is believed to be unaffected by the presence of such a weak superstructure. The ratio of the scattering power of Na to that of Ca is different for X ray and neutron radiation, and this radiation-dependence of scattering power has been used to determine the distribution of Na and Ca over a split-atom M site (two sites designated M' and M") in this Ano, plagioclase. Relative peak-height ratios M'/M", revealed in difference Fourier sections calculated from neutron and X-ray data, formed the basis for the cation-distribution analysis. As neutron and X-ray data sets were directly compared in this analysis, it was important that systematic bias between refined neutron and X-ray positional parameters could be demonstrated to be absent. In summary, with an M-site model constrained only by the electron-microprobedetermined bulk composition of the crystal, the following values were obtained for the M-site occupanciesN: ar, : 0.29(7),N ar. : 0.23(7),C ar, : 0.15(4),a nd Car" : 0.33(4). These results indicate that restrictive assumptions about M sites, on which previous plagioclase refinements have been based, are not applicable to this Ano, and possibly not to the entire compositional range. T-site ordering determined by (T-O) bond-length variation-t,o : 0.51(l), trm = t2o = t2m = 0.32(l)-is weak, as might be expectedf rom the volcanic origin of this megacryst.
