This letter reports on the Raman, optical and magnetic properties of FeNi co-doped ZnO nanowires prepared via a soft chemical solution method. The microstructural investigations show that the NiFe co-dopants are substituted into wurtzite ZnO nanostructure without forming any secondary phase. The co-doped nanowires show a remarkable reduction of 34 nm (267.9 meV) in the optical band gap, while suppression in the deep-level defect transition in visible luminescence. Furthermore, these nanowires exhibit ferromagnetism and an interesting low-temperature spin glass behavior, which may arise due to the presence of disorder and strong interactions of frustrated spin moments of Ni and Fe co-dopants on the ZnO lattice sites. InAs and In0.9Al0.1As self-assembled quantum dots have been grown by Stranski-Krastanow growth mode on In0.52Al0.48As lattice-matched on (0 0 1)InP substrates by MBE. The ternary In0.9Al0.1As dots on InP was demonstrated for the first time. The structural and optical properties were characterized using TEM and PL, respectively. Experimental results show that, a larger critical thickness is required for In0.9Al0.1As dots formation than for InAs dots, the In0.9Al0.1As dots show larger sizes and less homogeneity; some ordering in alignment can be observed in both InAs and In0.9Al0.1As dots, and In0.9Al0.1As dots give narrower luminescence than InAs dots. In this article we present size dependent spectroscopic observations of nanocolloids of ZnO. ZnO is reported to show two emission bands, an ultraviolet (UV) emission band and another in the green region. Apart from the known band gap 380 nm and impurity 530 nm emissions, we have found some peculiar features in the fluorescence spectra that are consistent with the nanoparticle size distribution. Results show that additional emissions at 420 and 490 nm are developed with particle size. The origin of the visible band emission is discussed. The mechanism of the luminescence suggests that UV luminescence of ZnO colloid is related to the transition from conduction band edge to valence band, and visible luminescence is caused by the transition from deep donor level to valence band due to oxygen vacancies and by the transition from conduction band to deep acceptor level due to impurities and defect states. A correlation analysis between the particle size and spectroscopic observations is also discussed.

Coherent Ge(Si)/Si(001) quantum dot islands grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy at a growth temperature of 700degreesC were investigated using transmission electron microscopy working at 300 kV. The [001] zone-axis bright-field diffraction contrast images of the islands show strong periodicity with the change of the TEM sample substrate thickness and the period is equal to the effective extinction distance of the transmitted beam. Simulated images based on finite element models of the displacement field and using multi-beam dynamical diffraction theory show a high degree of agreement. Studies for a range of electron energies show the power of the technique for investigating composition segregation in quantum dot islands. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the controlled variation of luminescence of ZnO nanostructures from intense ultraviolet to bright visible light. Deliberate addition of surfactants in the reaction medium not only leads to growth anisotropy of ZnO, but also alters the luminescence property. ZnO nanoclusters comprising of very fine particles with crystallite sizes approximate to 15-22nm were prepared in a non-aqueous medium, either from a single alcohol or from their mixtures. Introduction of the aqueous solution of the surfactant helps in altering the microstructure of ZnO nanostructure to nanorods, nanodumb-bells as well as the luminescence property. The as-prepared powder material is found to be well crystallized. Defects introduced by the surfactant in aqueous medium play an important role in substantial transition in the optical luminescence. Chromaticity coordinates were found to lie in the yellow region of color space. This gives an impression of white light emission from ZnO nanocrystals, when excited by a blue laser. Oxygen vacancy is described as the major defect responsible for visible light emission as quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman analysis.

We report on the energy transfer and frequency upconversion spectroscopic properties of Er3+-doped and Er3+/Yb3+-codoped TeO2-ZnO-Na2O-PbCl2 halide modified tellurite glasses upon excitation with 808 and 978 nm laser diode. Three intense emissions centered at around 529, 546 and 657 nm, alongwith a very weak blue emission at 4 10 nm have clearly been observed for the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped halide modified tellurite glasses upon excitation at 978 nm and the involved mechanisms are explained. The quadratic dependence of fluorescence on excitation laser power confirms the fact that the two-photon contribute to the infrared to green-red upconversion emissions. And the blue upconversion at 410 nm involved a sequential three-photon absorption process. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Y2-x Erx O3 thin films, with x varying between 0 and 0.72, have been successfully grown on crystalline silicon (c-Si) substrates by radio-frequency magnetron cosputtering of Y2 O 3 and Er2 O3 targets. As-deposited films are polycrystalline, showing the body-centered cubic structure of Y2 O3, and show only a slight lattice parameter contraction when x is increased, owing to the insertion of Er ions. All the films exhibit intense Er-related optical emission at room temperature both in the visible and infrared regions. By studying the optical properties for different excitation conditions and for different Er contents, all the mechanisms (i.e., cross relaxations, up-conversions, and energy transfers to impurities) responsible for the photoluminescence (PL) emission have been identified, and the existence of two different well-defined Er concentration regimes has been demonstrated. In the low concentration regime (x up to 0.05, Er-doped regime), the visible PL emission reaches its highest intensity, owing to the influence of up-conversions, thus giving the possibility of using Y2-x Er x O3 films as an up-converting layer in the rear of silicon solar cells. However, most of the excited Er ions populate the first two excited levels 4I11/2 and 4I13/2, and above a certain excitation flux a population inversion condition between the former and the latter is achieved, opening the route for the realization of amplifiers at 2.75 μm. Instead, in the high concentration regime (Er-compound regime), an increase in the nonradiative decay rates is observed, owing to the occurrence of cross relaxations or energy transfers to impurities. As a consequence, the PL emission at 1.54 μm becomes the most intense, thus determining possible applications for Y2-x Erx O 3 as an infrared emitting material. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

Phosphors CaYBO4:RE3+ (RE = Eu, Gd, Tb, Ce) were synthesized with the method of solid-state reaction at high temperature, and their vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-visible luminescent properties in VUV-visible region were studied at 20 K. In CaYBO4, it is confirmed that there are two types of lattice sites that can be substituted by rare-earth ions. The host excitation and emission peaks of undoped CaYBO4 are very weak, which locate at about 175 and 350-360nm, respectively. The existence of Gd3+ can efficiently enhance the utilization of host absorption energy and result in a strong emission line at 314 nm. In CaYBO4, Eu3+ has typical red emission with the strongest peak at 610 nm; Tb3+ shows characteristic green emission, of which the maximum emission peak is located at 542 nm. The charge transfer band of CaYBO4:Eu3+ was observed at 228 nm; the co-doping of Gd3+ and Eu3+ can obviously sensitize the red emission of Eu3+. The fluorescent spectra of CaYBO4:Ce3+ is very weak due to photoionization; the co-addition of Ce3+-Tb3+ can obviously quench the luminescence of Tb3+.

The unique absorption properties of the 9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one (HPHN) ligand have been exploited to obtain visible-light-sensitizable rare-earth complexes in 1: 3 and 1: 4 metal-to-ligand ratios. In both stoichiometries (1:3,tris,Ln(PHN)3;1:4, tetrakis, A[ Ln( PHN)(4)], with Ln being a trivalent rare-earth ion and A being a monovalent cation), the complexes of Nd(III),Er( III), and Yb(III) show typical near-infrared luminescence upon excitation with visible light with wavelengths up to 475 nm. The X-ray crystal structures of the tris complexes show solvent coordination to the central rare-earth ion, whereas in the tetrakis complexes, the four PHN-ligands form a protective shield around the central ion, preventing small solvent molecules from coordinating to the rare-earth ion, at least in the solid state.

Er(3+) doped Y(2)O(3) phosphor was prepared by the solution combustion method and characterized using powder x-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive analysis of x-ray mapping studies. Room temperature near infrared (NIR) to green up-conversion (UC) emissions in the region 520-580 nm {((2)H(11/2), (4)S(3/2)) -> (4)I(15/2)} and red UC emissions in the region 650-700 nm ((4)F(9/2) -> (4)I(15/2)) of Er(3+) ions have been observed upon direct excitation to the (4)I(11/2) level using similar to 972 nm laser radiation of nanosecond pulses. The possible mechanisms for the UC processes have been discussed on the basis of the energy level scheme, the pump power dependence as well as based on the temporal evolution. The excited state absorption is observed to be the dominant mechanism for the UC process. Y(2)O(3) : Er exhibits one thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) peak around 367 degrees C. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to study the defect centres induced in the phosphor by gamma irradiation and also to identify the centres responsible for the TSL peak. Room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of at least three distinct centres. One of them (centre I) with principal g-values g(parallel to) = 2.0415 and g(perpendicular to) = 2.0056 is identified as O(2)(-) centre while centre II with an isotropic g-factor 2.0096 is assigned to an F(+)-centre (singly ionized oxygen vacancy). Centre III is also assigned to an F(+)-centre with a small g-factor anisotropy (g(parallel to) = 1.974 and g(perpendicular to) = 1.967). Additional defect centres are observed during thermal annealing experiments and one of them appearing around 330 degrees C grows with the annealing temperature. This centre (assigned to an F(+)-centre) seems to originate from an F-centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) and the F-centre appears to correlate with the observed TSL peak in Y2O3 : Er phosphor. The trap depth for this peak has been determined to be 0.97 eV from TSL data.

Cooperative energy-transfer upconversion luminescence in Tb 3+/Yb 3+-codoped PbGeO 3-PbF 2-CdF 2 vitroceramic and its precursor glass under resonant and off-resonance infrared excitation, is investigated. Bright UV-visible emission signals around 384, 415, 438 nm, and 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the 5D 3( 5G 6 → 7F J(J=6,5,4) and 5D 4 → 7F J(J=6,5,4,3) transitions, respectively, were readily observed. The results indicate that cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The comparison of the upconversion process in a vitroceramic sample and its glassy precursor revealed that the former present much higher upconversion efficiency. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, temperature, and doping content is also examined.
