Raman spectra of the uranyl titanate mineral euxenite were analyzed and related to the mineral structure. A comparison is made with the Raman spectra of uranyl oxyhydroxide hydrates. The obsd. bands are attributed to the Ti[n.63743]O and (UO2)2+ stretching and bending vibrations, as well as lattice vibrations of rare-earth ions. The Raman bands of euxenite are in harmony with those of the uranyl oxyhydroxides. The mineral euxenite is metamict as is evidenced by the intensity of the U[n.63743]O stretching and bending modes, which are of lower intensity than expected, and with bands that are significantly broader.

Raman spectra of the uranyl containing mineral coconinoite, Fe2Al2(UO2)2(PO4)4(SO4)(OH)2•20H2O, are presented and compared with the mineral’s infrared spectra. Bands connected with (UO2)2+, (PO4)3- , (SO4)2-, (OH)- and H2O stretching and bending vibrations, are assigned. Approximate U-O bond lengths in uranyl, (UO2)2+, and O-H...O hydrogen bond lengths are calculated from the wavenumbers of the U-O stretching vibrations and (OH)- and H2O stretching vibrations, respectively, and compared with published data for similar natural and synthetic compounds.

Raman spectrum of the mineral derriksite Cu4UO2(SeO3)2(OH)6⋅H2O was studied and complemented by the infrared spectrum of this mineral. Both spectra were interpreted and partly compared with the spectra of demesmaekerite, marthozite, larisaite, haynesite and piretite. Observed Raman and infrared bands were attributed to the (UO2)2+, (SeO3)2−, (OH)− and H2O vibrations. The presence of symmetrically distinct hydrogen bonded molecule of water of crystallization and hydrogen bonded symmetrically distinct hydroxyl ions was inferred from the spectra in the derriksite unit cell. Approximate U–O bond lengths in uranyl and O–H⋯O hydrogen bond lengths were calculated from the Raman and infrared spectra of derriksite.

New complexes of Lanthanide nitrates with N-(4-methyl-2-pyridyl)-acetamide (4-me-aapH) of the general formulae. [Ln(4-me-aapH)2] [NO3] (where Ln=La=La-Yb and Y)have been synthesized and haracterised by chemical analysis, molar conductivity and physical methods such as infrared, 13C NMR an electronic spectra in the visible region. Molar conductance and infrared data point to the presence to the coordinated nitrates groups. Infrared and 13C NMR data have been interpreted in terms of the coordination of the legand to the metal ion through the oxygen of the secondary amide and nitrogen of the hetrocyclic ring, in a bidentate fashion. Coordination number of ten seems probable for the complexes.

New complexes of lanthanide nitrates with 2-N-(6-picolyl)-benzamide of the formulae Ln2[6-pic-BA], [NO3l6 (Ln = Y and La-Yb) have been prepared and characterised by chemical analysis, infrared, molar conductance and electronic spectral data. Molar conductance data along with IR data point to the presence of co-ordinated nitrate groups. IR spectra prove the bidentate co-ordination of the ligand to the metal ion, through the oxygen of the secondary amide and the nitrogen of the heterocyclic ring. Electronic spectral studies in the visible region suggest an eight co-ordinate geometry around the metal ions.

Antipyrine complexes of eight rare-earth nitrates of the composition M(C11H12N2O)3 (NO3)3 where M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er, and Y, have been prepared by a new, simple method and characterised. The complexes undergo exothermic decomposition at ~3oo°C. Infrared and U.V. spectral studies of the complexes indicate that antipyrine coordinates to metal through oxygen. The nature of the nitrate bonding is discussed in the light of infrared evidence, and conductivity studies in nitromethane and dimethylformamide.

Dimethyl sulphoxide complexes of lanthanide and yttrium nitrates of the general formula M(DMSO)n(NO3)3 where M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm or Gd; n = 4 and M = Y, Ho or Yb; n = 3 have been isolated and characterized. The i.r. data besides excluding the presence of D3h nitrate, reveal co-ordination through the oxygen atom of the dimethyl sulphoxide. The complexes are monomeric in acetonitrile. Molecular conductance data in acetone, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulphoxide suggest a co-ordination number of eight for the lighter lanthanides and seven for yttrium and the heavier lanthanides.

Dimethyl formamide complexes of five rare-earth nitrates, M(DMF)4(NO3)3 where M = La, Pr, Nd, Sm or Y have been prepared and their infra-red spectra and conductivities in nitromethane and DMF studied. It is suggested that the co-ordination number of the metal ion in these complexes is nine.

New complexes of lanthanide nitrates with N, N-diethylantipyrine-4-carboxamide (DEAP), with the general formulae [Ln2(DEAP)3] [NO3]6 (where Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Tb, Ho, Er, Yb and Y) have been isolated and characterized by chemical analysis and various physical methods such as electrolytic conductance, IR and13C NMR spectral data. Electrolytic conductance values and infrared spectral studies indicate that the nitrate groups are coordinated. Infrared and13C NMR spectral analysis show that the ligand DEAP is coordinated to the tripositive metal ion through the diethylcarboxamide carbonyl and antipyrine carbonyl oxygens in a bidentate fashion.

A substituted phosphoramidate has been used as a ligand to lanthanides for the first time. New complexes of lanthanide nitrates with O,O′,N-triisopropyl phosphoramidate (TIP) of the general formula Ln(TIP)3(NO3)3 where Ln=La-Yb and Y have been synthesised and characterised by chemical analysis, infrared and visible electronic spectra and electrical conductance.Infrared spectra indicate the coordination of the ligand to the metal ions through the oxygen of the P=O group. IR and conductance show that the nitrate groups are all coordinated. Electronic spectral shapes have been interpreted in terms of an eight coordinate geometry around the metal ions.

The thermal stability of ring-substituted arylammonium nitrates has been investigated using thermal methods of analysis. The decomposition temperature of meta- and para-substituted derivatives is found to be linearly related to the Hammett substituent constant σ. The activation energy for decomposition determined by isothermal gravimetry increases with the increasing basicity of the corresponding amine. The results suggest that the primary step in the decomposition process of these salts is proton abstraction by the anion from the arylammonium ion.

Layered LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 crystallizing in R (3) over barm space group is synthesized by decomposing the constituent metal-nitrate precursors. Oxidizing nature of metal nitrates stabilizes nickel in +3 oxidation state, enabling a high degree of cation ordering in the layered LiNi0.8Co0.2O2. The powder sample characterized by XRD Rietveld refinement reveals <2% Li-Ni site exchange in the layers. Scanning electron microscopic studies on the as-synthesized LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 sample reflect well defined particles of cubic morphology with particle size ranging between 200 and 250 nm. Cyclic voltammograms suggest that LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 undergoes phase transformation on first charge with resultant phase being completely reversible in subsequent cycles. The first-charge-cycle phase transition is further supported by impedance spectroscopy that shows substantial reduction in resistance during initial de-intercalation. Galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles reflect a first-discharge capacity of 184 mAh g(-1) which is stabilized at 170 mAh g(-1) over 50 cycles.
