The two-body Dirac(Breit) equation with potentials associated to one-boson-exchanges with cutoff masses is solved for the deuteron and its observables calculated. The 16-component wave-function for the Jπ = 1+ state contains four independent radial functions which satisfy a system of four coupled differential equations of first order. This system is numerically integrated, from infinity towards the origin, by fixing the value of the deuteron binding energy and imposing appropriate boundary conditions at infinity. For the exchange potential of the pion, a mixture of direct plus derivative couplings to the nucleon is considered. We varied the pion-nucleon coupling constant, and the best results of our calculations agree with the lower values recently determined for this constant.

The quantitative effect in the maximum number of particles and other static observables was determined. A deviation in the harmonic trap potential that is effective only outside the central part of the potential, with the addition of a term that is proportional to a cubic or quartic power of the distance was considered. Results showed that this study could be easily transferred to other trap geometries to estimate anharmonic effects.

The problem of escape/capture is encountered in many problems of the celestial mechanics -the capture of the giants planets irregular satellites, comets capture by Jupiter, and also orbital transfer between two celestial bodies as Earth and Moon. To study these problems we introduce an approach which is based on the numerical integration of a grid of initial conditions. The two-body energy of the particle relative to a celestial body defines the escape/capture. The trajectories are integrated into the past from initial conditions with negative two-body energy. The energy change from negative to positive is considered as an escape. By reversing the time, this escape turns into a capture. Using this technique we can understand many characteristics of the problem, as the maximum capture time, stable regions where the particles cannot escape from, and others. The advantage of this kind of approach is that it can be used out of plane (that is, for any inclination), and with perturbations in the dynamics of the n-body problem. © 2005 International Astronomical Union.

The homogeneous Lippmann-Schwinger integral equation is solved in momentum space by using confining potentials. Since the confining potentials are unbounded at large distances, they lead to a singularity at small momentum. In order to remove the singularity of the kernel of the integral equation, a regularized form of the potentials is used. As an application of the method, the mass spectra of heavy quarkonia, mesons consisting from heavy quark and antiquark (Υ(bb̄), ψ(cc̄)), are calculated for linear and quadratic confining potentials. The results are in good agreement with configuration space and experimental results. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

The deuteron binding energy and wave function are calculated by using the recently developed three-dimensional form of low-momentum nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. The homogeneous Lippmann-Schwinger equation is solved in momentum space by using the low-momentum two-body interaction, which is constructed from Malfliet-Tjon potential. The results for both, deuteron binding energy and wave function, obtained with low-momentum interaction, are compared with the corresponding results obtained with bare potential. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

An expression for the U(3) content of the matrix elements of one- and two-body operators in Elliott's basis is obtained. Three alternative ways of evaluating this content with increasing performance in computing time are presented. All of them allow an exact representation of that content in terms of integers, avoiding Founding errors in the computer codes. The role of dual bases in dealing with nonorthogonal bases is also clarified. © 1992 American Institute of Physics.

A semirelativistic two-body Dirac equation with an enlarged set of phenomenological potentials, including Breit-type terms, is investigated for the general case of unequal masses. Solutions corresponding to definite total angular momentum and parity are shown to fall into two classes, each one being obtained by solving a system of four coupled first-order radial differential equations. The reduction of each of these systems to a pair of coupled Schrödinger-type equations is also discussed. © 1992 American Institute of Physics.

Charmless charged two-body B decays are sensitive probes of the CKM matrix, that parameterize CP violation in the Standard Model (SM), and have the potential to reveal the presence of New Physics. The framework of CP violation within the SM, the role of the CKM matrix, with its basic formalism, and the current experimental status are presented. The theoretical tools commonly used to deal with hadronic B decays and an overview of the phenomenology of charmless two-body B decays are outlined. LHCb is one of the four main experiments operating at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), devoted to the measurement of CP violation and rare decays of charm and beauty hadrons. The LHCb detector is described, focusing on the technologies adopted for each sub-detector and summarizing their performances. The status-of-the-art of the LHCb measurements with charmless two-body B decays is then presented. Using the 37/pb of integrated luminosity collected at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV by LHCb during 2010, the direct CP asymmetries ACP(B0 -> Kpi) = −0.074 +/- 0.033 +/- 0.008 and ACP(Bs -> piK) = 0.15 +/- 0.19 +/- 0.02 are measured. Using 320/pb of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 these measurements are updated to ACP(B0 -> Kpi) = −0.088 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.008 and ACP(Bs -> piK) = 0.27 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.02. In addition, the branching ratios BR(B0 -> K+K-) = (0.13+0.06-0.05 +/- 0.07) x 10^-6 and BR(Bs -> pi+pi-) = (0.98+0.23-0.19 +/- 0.11) x 10^-6 are measured. Finally, using a sample of 370/pb of integrated luminosity collected during 2011, the relative branching ratios BR(B0 -> pi+pi-)/BR(B0 -> Kpi) = 0.262 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.017, (fs/fd)BR(Bs -> K+K-)/BR(B0 -> Kpi)=0.316 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.019, (fs/fd)BR(Bs -> piK)/BR(B0 -> Kpi) = 0.074 +/- 0.006 +/- 0.006 and BR(Lambda_b -> ppi)/BR(Lambda_b -> pK)=0.86 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.05 are determined.

An analytical solution of the two body problem perturbed by a constant tangential acceleration is derived with the aid of perturbation theory. The solution, which is valid for circular and elliptic orbits with generic eccentricity, describes the instantaneous time variation of all orbital elements. A comparison with high-accuracy numerical results shows that the analytical method can be effectively applied to multiple-revolution low-thrust orbit transfer around planets and in interplanetary space with negligible error.

A formulation of the perturbed two-body problem that relies on a new set of orbital elements is presented. The proposed method represents a generalization of the special perturbation method published by Peláez et al. (Celest Mech Dyn Astron 97(2):131?150,2007) for the case of a perturbing force that is partially or totally derivable from a potential. We accomplish this result by employing a generalized Sundman time transformation in the framework of the projective decomposition, which is a known approach for transforming the two-body problem into a set of linear and regular differential equations of motion. Numerical tests, carried out with examples extensively used in the literature, show the remarkable improvement of the performance of the new method for different kinds of perturbations and eccentricities. In particular, one notable result is that the quadratic dependence of the position error on the time-like argument exhibited by Peláez?s method for near-circular motion under the J2 perturbation is transformed into linear. Moreover, themethod reveals to be competitive with two very popular elementmethods derived from theKustaanheimo-Stiefel and Sperling-Burdet regularizations.

EDROMO is a special perturbation method for the propagation of elliptical orbits in the perturbed two-body problem. The state vector consists of a time-element and seven spatial elements, and the independent variable is a generalized eccentric anomaly introduced through a Sundman time transformation. The key role in the derivation of the method is played by an intermediate reference frame which enjoys the property of remaining fixed in space as long as perturbations are absent. Three elements of EDROMO characterize the dynamics in the orbital frame and its orientation with respect to the intermediate frame, and the Euler parameters associated to the intermediate frame represent the other four spatial elements. The performance of EDromo has been analyzed by considering some typical problems in astrodynamics. In almost all our tests the method is the best among other popular formulations based on elements.

In this article, an approximate analytical solution for the two body problem perturbed by a radial, low acceleration is obtained, using a regularized formulation of the orbital motion and the method of multiple scales. The results reveal that the physics of the problem evolve in two fundamental scales of the true anomaly. The first one drives the oscillations of the orbital parameters along each orbit. The second one is responsible of the long-term variations in the amplitude and mean values of these oscillations. A good agreement is found with high precision numerical solutions.

The results of two separate searches for the rare two-body charmless baryonic decays B0 -> p pbar and B0s -> p pbar at the LHCb experiment are reported in this thesis. The first analysis uses a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.9 fb^-1, of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. An excess of B0 -> p pbar candidates with respect to background expectations is seen with a statistical significance of 3.3 standard deviations. This constitutes the first evidence for a two-body charmless baryonic B0 decay. No significant B0s -> p pbar signal was observed. However, a small excess of B0s -> p pbar events allowed the extraction of two sided confidence level intervals for the B0s -> p pbar branching fraction using the Feldman-Cousins frequentist method. This improved the upper limit on the B0s -> p pbar branching fraction by three orders of magnitude over previous bounds. The 68.3% confidence level intervals on the branching fractions were measured to be BF(B0 -> p pbar) = ( 1.47 ^{+0.62}_{-0.51} ^{+0.35}_{-0.14} ) x 10^-8, BF(B0s -> p pbar) = ( 2.84 ^{+2.03}_{-1.68} ^{+0.85}_{-0.18} ) x 10^-8, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The second analysis followed on from the first LHCb result and included the full 2011 and 2012 samples of proton-proton collision data at centre of mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 3.122 fb^-1.
