Insight into the unique structure of hydrotalcites (HTs) has been obtained using Raman spectroscopy. Gallium-contg. HTs of formula Zn4 Ga2(CO3)(OH)12 · xH2O (2:1 ZnGa-HT), Zn6 Ga2(CO3)(OH)16 · xH2O (3:1 ZnGa-HT) and Zn8 Ga2(CO3)(OH)18 · xH2O (4:1 ZnGa-HT) have been successfully synthesized and characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The d(003) spacing varies from 7.62 Å for the 2:1 ZnGa-HT to 7.64 Å for the 3:1 ZnGa-HT. The 4:1 ZnGa-HT showed a decrease in the d(003) spacing, compared to the 2:1 and 3:1 compds. Raman spectroscopy complemented with selected IR data has been used to characterize the synthesized gallium-contg. HTs. Raman bands obsd. at around 1050, 1060 and 1067 cm-1 are attributed to the sym. stretching modes of the (CO32-) units. Multiple ν3 (CO32-) antisym. stretching modes are found between 1350 and 1520 cm-1, confirming multiple carbonate species in the HT structure. The splitting of this mode indicates that the carbonate anion is in a perturbed state. Raman bands obsd. at 710 and 717 cm-1 and assigned to the ν4 (CO32-) modes support the concept of multiple carbonate species in the interlayer.

The mineral arsentsumebite Pb2Cu(AsO4)(SO4)(OH), a copper arsenate-sulfate hydroxide of the brackebuschite group has been characterised by Raman spectroscopy. The brackebuschite mineral group are a series of monoclinic arsenates, phosphates and vanadates of the general formula A2B(XO4)(OH,H2O), where A may be Ba, Ca, Pb, Sr, while B may be Al, Cu2+,Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Mn3+, Zn and XO4 may be AsO4, PO4, SO4,VO4. Bands are assigned to the stretching and bending modes of SO42- AsO43- and HOAsO3 units. Raman spectroscopy readily distinguishes between the two minerals arsentsumebite and tsumebite. Raman bands attributed to arsenate are not observed in the Raman spectrum of tsumebite. Phosphate bands found in the Raman spectrum of tsumebite are not found in the Raman spectrum of arsentsumebite. Raman spectroscopy readily distinguishes the two minerals tsumebite and arsentsumebite.

Here we report an ultrasensitive method for detecting bio-active compounds in biological samples by means of functionalised nanoparticles interrogated by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). This method is applicable to the recovery and detection of many diagnostically important peptidyl analytes such as insulin, human growth hormone, growth factors (IGFs) and erythropoietin (EPO), as well as many small molecule analytes and metabolites. Our method, developed to detect EPO, demonstrates its utility in a complex yet well defined biological system. Recombinant human EPO (rhEPO) and EPO analogues have successfully been used to treat anaemia in end-stage renal failure, chronic disorders and infections, cancer and AIDS. Current methods for EPO testing are lengthy, laborious and relatively insensitive to low concentrations. In our rapid screening methodology, gold nanoparticles were functionalised with anti-EPO antibodies to provide very high selectivity towards the EPO protein in urine. These “smart sensor” nanoparticles interact with and trap EPO. Subsequent SERS screening allows for the detection and quantisation of ultra trace amounts (<<10-15 M) of EPO in urine samples with minimal sample preparation. We present data showing that the SERS spectrum differentiates between human endogenous EPO and rhEPO in unpurified urine, and potentially distinguishes between purified EPO isoforms. The elimination of sample preparation and direct screening in biological fluids significantly reduces the time required by current methods. Antibody recognition against a variety of biological targets and the availability of portable commercial SERS analysers for rapid onsite testing suggest broad diagnostic applicability in a flexible analytical platform.

We have developed an explanation for ultra trace detection found when using Au/Ag SERS nanoparticles linked to biochemical affinity tags, e.g. antibodies. The nanoparticle structure is not as usually assumed and the aggregated nanoparticles constitute hot spots that are indispensable for these very low levels of analyte detection, even more so when using a direct detection method.

Self catalytic growth of Indium Oxide (In2O3) nanowires (NWs) have been grown by resistive thermal evaporation of Indium (In) in the presence of oxygen without use of any additional metal catalyst. Nanowires growth took place at low substrate temperature of 370-420 degrees C at an applied current of 180-200 A to the evaporation boat. Morphology, microstructures, and compositional studies of the grown nanowires were performed by employing field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) respectively. Nanowires were uniformly grown over the entire Si substrate and each of the nanowire is capped with a catalyst particle at their end. X-ray diffraction study reveals the crystalline nature of the grown nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy study on the nanowires further confirmed the single crystalline nature of the nanowires. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis on the nanowires and capped nanoparticle confirmed that Indium act as catalyst for In2O3 nanowires growth. A self catalytic Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) growth mechanism was responsible for the growth of In2O3 nanowires. Effect of oxygen partial pressure variation and variation of applied currents to the evaporation boat on the nanowires growth was systematically studied. These studies concluded that at oxygen partial pressure in the range of 4 x 10(-4), 6 x 10(-4) mbar at applied currents to the evaporation boat of 180-200 A were the best conditions for good nanowires growth. Finally, we observed another mode of VLS growth along with the standard VLS growth mode for In2O3 nanowires similar to the growth mechanism reported for GaAs nanowires.

Fe0.05Co0.95Sb2.875Te0.125, a double-element-substituted skutterudite, was prepared by induction melting, annealing, and hot pressing (HP). The hot-pressed sample was subjected to high-pressure torsion (HPT) with 4 GPa pressure at 673 K. X-ray diffraction was performed before and after HPT processing of the sample; the skutterudite phase was observed as a main phase, but an additional impurity phase (CoSb2) was observed in the HPT-processed sample. Surface morphology was determined by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. In the HP sample, coarse grains with sizes in the range of approximately 100 nm to 300 nm were obtained. They changed to fine grains with a reduction in grain size to 75 nm to 125 nm after HPT due to severe plastic deformation. Crystallographic texture, as measured by x-ray diffraction, indicated strengthening of (112), (102) poles and weakening of the (123) pole of the HPT-processed sample. Raman-active vibrational modes showed a peak position shift towards the lower energy side, indicating softening of the modes after HPT. The distortion of the rectangular Sb-Sb rings leads to broadening of Sb-Sb vibrational modes due to local strain fluctuation. In the HPT process, a significant effect on the shorter Sb-Sb bond was observed as compared with the longer Sb-Sb bond.

The phase transformation of zirconia from tetragonal to monoclinic is characterized by UV Raman spectroscopy, visible Raman spectroscopy, and XRD. Electronic absorption Of ZrO2 in the UV region makes UV Raman spectroscopy more sensitive at the surface region than XRD or visible Raman spectroscopy. Zirconia changes from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase with calcination temperatures elevated and monoclinic phase is always detected first by UV Raman spectroscopy for the samples calcined at lower temperatures than that by XRD and visible Raman spectroscopy. When the phase of zirconia changes from tetragonal to monoclinic, the slight changes of the phase at very beginning can be detected by UV Raman spectroscopy. UV Raman spectra clearly indicate that the phase transition takes place initially at the surface regions. It is found that the phase change from tetragonal to monoclinic is significantly retarded when amorphous Zr(OH)(4) was agglomerated to bigger particles and the particle agglomeration of amorphous zirconium hydroxide is beneficial to the stabilization of t-ZrO2 phase.

A series of aluminosilicate zeolites are characterized by UV Raman spectroscopy for the first time, and UV Raman spectra of various zeolites give strong and clear bands with high resolution, while conventional Raman spectra of these zeolites are difficult to obtain because of a strong background fluorescence. Additionally, these zeolites show several new bands in UV Raman spectroscopy. A summary of these UV Raman spectra over various zeolites suggests that the bands at 470-530, 370-430, 290-410, and 220-280 cm(-1) can be assigned to the bending modes of 4-, 5-, 6-, and 8-membered rings of aluminosilicate zeolites, respectively. Furthermore, it is found that the band intensity of zeolites in UV Raman spectroscopy is dependent on the Si/Al ratio. Moreover, the UV Raman spectra of crystallization, for zeolite X at various times show that, in the initial stage of crystallization, the 4-membered rings (510 cm(-1)) interconnect each other to form beta -cages with 6-membered rings (390 cm(-1)), which further crystallize to zeolite X. The purpose of this tutorial review is to show how surface-enhanced Raman (SERS) and resonance Raman (SERRS) spectroscopy have evolved to the stage where they can be used as a quantitative analytical technique. SER(R)S has enormous potential for a range of applications where high sensitivity needs to be combined with good discrimination between molecular targets, particularly since low cost, compact spectrometers can read the high signal levels that SER(R)S typically provides. These advantages over conventional Raman measurements come at the cost of increased complexity and this review discusses the factors that need to be controlled to generate stable and reproducible SER(R)S calibrations.

A simple derivatization methodology is shown to extend the application of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to the detection of trace concentration of contaminants in liquid form. Normally in SERS the target analyte species is already present in the molecular form in which it is to be detected and is extracted from solution to occupy sites of enhanced electromagnetic field on the substrate by means of chemisorption or drop-casting and subsequent evaporation of the solvent. However, these methods are very ineffective for the detection of low concentrations of contaminant in liquid form because the target (ionic) species (a) exhibits extremely low occupancy of enhancing surface sites in the bulk liquid environment and (b) coevaporates with the solvent. In this study, the target analyte species (acid) is detected via its solid derivative (salt) offering very significant enhancement of the SERS signal because of preferential deposition of the salt at the enhancing surface but without loss of chemical discrimination. The detection of nitric acid and sulfuric acid is demonstrated down to 100 ppb via reaction with ammonium hydroxide to produce the corresponding ammonium salt. This yields an improvement of ∼4 orders of magnitude in the low-concentration detection limit compared with liquid phase detection.

The efficient electrocatalysts for many heterogeneous catalytic processes in energy conversion and storage systems must possess necessary surface active sites. Here we identify, from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, that controlling charge density redistribution via the atomic-scale incorporation of heteroatoms is paramount to import surface active sites. We engineer the deterministic nitrogen atoms inserting the bulk material to preferentially expose active sites to turn the inactive material into a sufficient electrocatalyst. The excellent electrocatalytic activity of N-In2O3 nanocrystals leads to higher performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) than the DSCs fabricated with Pt. The successful strategy provides the rational design of transforming abundant materials into high-efficient electrocatalysts. More importantly, the exciting discovery of turning the commonly used transparent conductive oxide (TCO) in DSCs into counter electrode material means that except for decreasing the cost, the device structure and processing techniques of DSCs can be simplified in future.

Praseodymium oxide as a thin film of controllable layer is known to display many unique physiochemical properties, which can be useful to ceramic, semiconductive and sensor industries. Here in this short paper, we describe a new chemical method of depositing praseodymium oxide on tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) surface using a layer-by-layer approach. The process is carried out by dipping the ITO in solutions of adsorbable polycationic chitosan and alkaline praseodymium hydroxide Pr(OH)(3) alternatively in order to build up the well-defined multi-layers. XRD suggests that the predominant form of the oxide is Pr6O11, obtained after heat treatment of the deposited ITO in static air at 500 degrees C. Microscopic studies including AFM, TEM and SEM indicate that the deposited oxide particles are uniform in size and shape (cylindrical), mesoporous and the thickness of the film can be controlled. AC impedance measurements of the deposited materials also reveal that the oxide layers display a high electrical conductivity hence suitable for sensor uses. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. This communication discusses the formation of doped nanobelts produced by a simple route. Tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanobelts were obtained by a carbothermal reduction method. The nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDX). The results show that the nanobelts have a cubic structure, are single crystalline and doped with tin and grow in the [400] direction.

Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to investigate the early aging stage of iron(III) hydroxide sols prepared by oxidation of Fe(CO)5 in ethanolic solution, followed by vacuum drying at room temperature. One sample was composed of amorphous particles, while two other samples were partially crystallized, either as a result of solvent change or of spontaneous aging. The main results of Mössbauer measurements in the 80-320 K temperature range are: (a) partially crystallized particles exhibit a strong, S-shaped temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting, in contrast to a weak and linear variation for amorphous particles; (b) the recoilless fraction temperature dependence is affected by vibration of the particles as a whole, with an effective force constant which is smaller for crystallized particles than for amorphous ones. Furthermore, the former exhibit anf-factor discontinuity near 0°C, which is attributed to melting of a surface layer built up during the crystallization process. © 1986.

Benzodiazepines are among the most prescribed compounds for anti-anxiety and are present in many toxicological screens. These drugs are also prominent in the commission of drug facilitated sexual assaults due their effects on the central nervous system. Due to their potency, a low dose of these compounds is often administered to victims; therefore, the target detection limit for these compounds in biological samples is 10 ng/mL. Currently these compounds are predominantly analyzed using immunoassay techniques; however more specific screening methods are needed. ^ The goal of this dissertation was to develop a rapid, specific screening technique for benzodiazepines in urine samples utilizing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which has previously been shown be capable of to detect trace quantities of pharmaceutical compounds in aqueous solutions. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy has the advantage of overcoming the low sensitivity and fluorescence effects seen with conventional Raman spectroscopy. The spectra are obtained by applying an analyte onto a SERS-active metal substrate such as colloidal metal particles. SERS signals can be further increased with the addition of aggregate solutions. These agents cause the nanoparticles to amass and form hot-spots which increase the signal intensity. ^ In this work, the colloidal particles are spherical gold nanoparticles in aqueous solution with an average size of approximately 30 nm. The optimum aggregating agent for the detection of benzodiazepines was determined to be 16.7 mM MgCl2, providing the highest signal intensities at the lowest drug concentrations with limits of detection between 0.5 and 127 ng/mL. A supported liquid extraction technique was utilized as a rapid clean extraction for benzodiazepines from urine at a pH of 5.0, allowing for clean extraction with limits of detection between 6 and 640 ng/mL. It was shown that at this pH other drugs that are prevalent in urine samples can be removed providing the selective detection of the benzodiazepine of interest. ^ This technique has been shown to provide rapid (less than twenty minutes), sensitive, and specific detection of benzodiazepines at low concentrations in urine. It provides the forensic community with a sensitive and specific screening technique for the detection of benzodiazepines in drug facilitated assault cases.^
