Matthias, Miller and Remeika1 were the first to observe that triglycine sulphate becomes ferroelectric below 47°C. The dielectric properties and the specific heat of this crystal have been studied through the transition temperature by Hoshino, Mitsui, Jona and Pepinsky2. The observed variation of the dielectric properties as a function of temperature in this crystal shows that the transition is of second order. Hoshino et al. concluded that the anomaly is not of the λ-type, since their specific heat - temperature curve showed only a hump. It was decided to investigate the thermal expansion of this crystal as it might throw some light on the nature of the transition.

The linear compressibility and the thermal expansion of Al-Fe and Al-Mn quasicrystals have been reported to be anisotropic. The authors suggest that the observed anisotropy in these properties could be due to the presence of decagonal quasicrystals rather than icosahedral quasicrystals.

The present x-ray study has been undertook in order to correlate the phase transition in sodium metavanadate NaVO3 crystal with its structural aspects. The thermal expansion behaviour of NaVO3 was studied from room temperature up to 500 C, well beyond the transition temperature.

The problems in measuring thermal emittance by steady?state calorimetric technique have been analyzed. A few suggestions to make it more accurate, simple, and rapid have been discussed and results are presented.

Thermal expansion of several compositions of Sr and Mg-doped LaGaO3 including an A-site deficient composition (La0.9Sr0.1)(0.98)(Ga0.8Mg0.2)O-2.821 were measured in the temperature range from 298 to 1273 K. The effect of doping on thermal expansion was studied by varying the composition at one site of the perovskite structure (either A or B), while keeping the composition at the other site invariant. Thermal expansion varied nonlinearly with temperature and exhibited an inflexion between 550 and 620 K, probably related to the change in crystal structure from orthorhombic to rhombohedral. The dependence of average thermal expansion coefficient (alpha (av)) on the dopant concentration on either A or B site of the perovskite structure was found to be linear, when the composition at the other site was kept constant. Mg doping on the B-site had a greater effect on the average thermal expansion coefficient than Sr doping on the A-site. Cation deficiency at the A-site decreases thermal expansion when compositions at both sites are held constant.

The effect of substitution of calcium on the anisotropic axial thermal expansion of cordierite was investigated by using a high-temperature X-ray diffraction technique. The compositions were prepared by the sol–gel route. In the Mg2-xCax-Al4Si5O18 system, single-phase cordierite can be prepared for x up to 0.5. Thermal expansion anisotropy (αa–αc) of cordierites reduces progressively by the substitution of increasing amounts of Ca for Mg.

The structures of Ca0.5Ti2P3O12 and Sr0.5Ti2P3O12, low-thermal-expansion materials, have been refined by the Rietveld method using high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. The assignment of space group R[3 with combining macron] to NASICON-type compounds containing divalent cations is confirmed. 31P magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MASNMR) data are presented as supporting data. A comparison of changes in the polyhedral network resulting from the cation distribution, is made with NaTi2P3O12 and Nb2P3O12. Factors that may govern thermal expansion in this family of compounds are discussed.

The paper is based on a study to develop carbon-glass epoxy hybrid composites with desirable thermal properties for applications at cryogenic temperatures. It analyzes the coefficient of thermal expansion of carbon-epoxy and glass-epoxy composite materials and compares it with the properties of carbon-glass epoxy hybrid composites in the temperature range 300 K to 125K. Urethane modified epoxy matrix system is used to make the composite specimens suitable for use even for temperatures as low as 20K. It is noted that the lay-up with 80% of carbon fibers in the total volume fraction of fibers oriented at 30 degrees and 20% of glass fibers oriented at 0 degrees yields near to zero coefficient of thermal expansion as the temperature is lowered from ambient to 125 K. Thermal expansion of irradiated nylon-6 has been studied in the temperature range 10 to 340 K using a three-terminal capacitance bridge technique. Irradiation is carried out using cobalt-60 gamma-rays up to 500 Mrad dosage. Radiation enhances chain scission over crosslinking. alpha increases from 0 to 250 Mrad between 10 to 340 K and not much variation is observed between 250 to 500 Mrad for samples from 10 to 250 K.

The coefficient of thermal expansion is measured for irradiated Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) from 10K to 340K. The samples of PVC are irradiated, up to 500 Mrad in steps of 100 Mrad, in air at room temperature by using Co gamma rays with a dose rate of 0.3 Mrad/h. The PVC is an amorphous sample which is confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The coefficient of thermal expansion is found to decrease with radiation dose from 10K to 110K and it increaseswith radiation dose from 110K to 340K. The results are explained on the basis of radiation induced degradation of the sample.

Several new Na, Y and Zr substituted derivatives of Ca-0.5 Ti-2(PO4)(3) (CTP) have been synthesized. These derivatives retain the hexagonal structure of the parent (CTP) compound with minor changes in lattice parameters. Linear thermal expansion coefficients (alpha) have been obtained using a high sensitivity dilatometer.

In this paper, we report high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HTXRD) and dilatometric studies on LaBa2Cu2CoO7+delta. Bulk and volume thermal expansion studies, along with a study of its phase transition, were carried out. The linear and volume thermal expansion coefficients were found to be 11.7 X 10(-6) K-1 and 42.3 X 10(-6) K-1, respectively. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of the solid solution Nd0.7Sr0.3Fe1-xCoxO3 for 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.8 were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). The pseudo-cubic lattice constant decreased continuously with x. The average linear thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) in the temperature range from 573 to 973 K was found to increase with x. The thermal expansion curves for all values of x displayed rapid increase in slope at high temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with x for the entire temperature range of measurement. The calculated activation energy values indicate that electrical conduction takes place primarily by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for the divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B-site (in preference to Co4+ ions) and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice for low values of x. The large increase in the conductivity with x in the range from 0.6 to 0.8 is attributed to the substitution of Fe4+ ions by Co4+ ions. The Fe site has a lower small polaron site energy than Co and hence behaves like a carrier trap, thereby drastically reducing the conductivity. The non-linear behaviour in the dependence of log sigmaT with reciprocal temperature can be attributed to the generation of additional charge carriers with increasing temperature by the charge disproportionation of Co3+ ions.
