Endohedral metallofullerenes Ce@C-82, Ce-2@C-80, Nd@C-82 and Nd-2@C-80 undergo gas phase ion/molecule reactions with the ion system from self-chemical ionization of vinyl acetate, and exohedral derivatives are thus generated, A new heterocycle is formed from metallofullerenes and a C2H3O+ cation, Endohedral metallofullerenes show much higher reactivities than empty fullerenes during the association and the charge and proton transfer processes, The strong electron-donating character of endohedral metallofullerenes is due to their unique super-atom-like electronic structures. El libro contiene 10 exámenes de razonamiento verbal (de 50 minutos de duración cada uno) con una mezcla de los diferentes tipos de preguntas que se pueden encontrar en los pruebas oficiales. Dirigido a alumnos de enseñanza secundaria, los ejercicios van aumentando de dificultad gradualmente, lo que les permitirá ir adquiriendo confianza poco a poco hasta alcanzar el nivel requerido. Al final del libro hay una tabla para apuntar los resultados de cada test y controlar el progreso de los alumnos, y un apartado con las soluciones.

Three supramolecular complexes of Co(II) using SCN-/SeCN- in combination with 4,4'-dipyridyl-N,N'-dioxide (dpyo), i.e., {[Co(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(2)].(dpyo)}(n) ( 1), {[Co(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)].(H2O)}(n) ( 2), {[Co(SeCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)]center dot(H2O)}(n) ( 3), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Complex 1 is a rare example of a dpyo bridged two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, and pi-stacked dpyo supramolecular rods are generated by the lattice dpyo, passing through the rhombic grid of stacked layers, resulting in a three-dimensional (3D) superstructure. Complexes 2 and 3 are isomorphous one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers [-Co-dpyo-Co-] that undergo self-assembly leading to a bilayer architecture derived through an R-2(2)(8) H-bonding synthon between coordinated water and dpyo oxygen. A reinvestigation of coordination polymers [Mn(SCN)(2)(dpyo)( H2O)(MeOH)](n) ( 4) and {[Fe(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)]center dot(H2O)}(n) ( 5) reported recently by our group [ Manna et al. Indian J. Chem. 2006, 45A, 1813] reveals brick wall topology rather than bilayer architecture is due to the decisive role of S center dot center dot center dot S/Se center dot center dot center dot Se interactions in determining the helical nature in 4 and 5 as compared to zigzag polymeric chains in 2 and 3, although the same R-2(2)(8) synthon is responsible for supramolecular assembly in these complexes.

Let f : U subset of R(2) -> R(3) be a representative of a finitely determined map germ f : (R(2), 0) -> (R(3), 0). Consider the curve obtained as the intersection of the image of the mapping f with a sufficiently small sphere s(epsilon)(2) centered at the origin in R(3), call this curve the associated doodle of the map germ f. For a large class of map germs the associated doodle has many transversal self-intersections. The cross-section for the scattering of a photon by the Sun's gravitational field, treated as an external field, is computed in the framework of R + R-2 gravity. Using this result, we found that for a photon just grazing the Sun's surface the deflection is 1.75 which is exactly the same as that given by Einstein's theory. An explanation for this pseudo-paradox is provided.

Most work on supersingular potentials has focused on the study of the ground state. In this paper, a global analysis of the ground and excited states for the successive values of the orbital angular momentum of the supersingular plus quadratic potential is carried out, making use of centrifugal plus quadratic potential eigenfunction bases. First, the radially nodeless states are variationally analyzed for each value of the orbital angular momentum using the corresponding functions of the bases; the output includes the centrifugal and frequency parameters of the auxiliary potentials and their eigenfunction bases. In the second stage, these bases are used to construct the matrix representation of the Hamiltonian of the system, and from its diagonalization the energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the successive states are obtained. The systematics of the accuracy and convergence of the overall results are discussed with emphasis on the dependence on the intensity of the supersingular part of the potential and on the orbital angular momentum.

Genotoxicity data on commercial azo dyes and their components remain sparse, despite their widespread use. We have tested the mutagenicity of 2-cyano-4-nitroaniline (CNNA) and 2,6-dicyano-4-nitroaniline (CNCNNA), components of azo dyes such as Disperse Blue 165 and Disperse Red 73, in Ames test strains. Both compounds are extraordinarily potent frameshift mutagens, with much greater activity than structurally similar dihalonitroanilines and halodinitroanilines. Analysis of the responses of strains over-expressing or deficient in bioactivation enzymes shows that bacterial nitroreductase and acetyl CoA: arylamine N-acetyltransferase are important mediators of the mutagenicity of CNNA and CNCNNA. Lo scopo di questa tesi è illustrare il paradigma dell’inflazione cosmologica descrivendo in particolare la teoria dell’inflazione R^2. In una prima sezione si fa riferimento al contesto della relatività generale per descrivere l’universo su larga scala. Vengono prese in esame le ipotesi utilizzate per ottenere il modello standard della cosmologia e le principali proprietà che da esso possono essere ricavate. Si focalizza quindi l’analisi sulla descrizione dell’universo primordiale da cui traggono origine le ipotesi dell’esistenza dell’epoca inflazionaria esponendo, in particolare, come questa teoria riesca a risolvere i problemi della piattezza e dell’orizzonte cosmologico. Viene poi descritto come la fase di espansione esponenziale richiesta da queste ipotesi possa essere generata dalla presenza di un campo scalare φ specifico. Particolare risalto è dato alla descrizione dell’approssimazione di ”slow-roll” ed ai vincoli sul numero di ”e-folding”. Una seconda sezione mostra l’applicazione dell’analisi generale esposta in precedenza al modello di inflazione di Starobinsky. A tal fine sono descritte le caratteristiche delle teorie della gravità f(R) con particolare attenzione alle trasformazioni conformi e scelta del frame. Attraverso l’esposizione delle equazioni di campo cosmologiche nella teoria della gravità R^2 si mostra come il processo di espansione inflazionaria dell’universo nelle sue fasi iniziali possa essere descritto da un comportamento non standard della gravità ad alte energie. Sono riportati i risultati principali ottenuti con questa teoria nel frame di Jordan e in quello di Einstein. La conclusione descrive in sintesi lo stato attuale delle osservazioni sperimentali e come queste abbiano un legame stretto con la teoria delle perturbazioni cosmologiche. In particolare, presentando i risultati ottenuti nel contesto dell’inflazione R^2 ed esponendo gli ultimi dati raccolti dall’esperimento Planck, si analizza come il modello sia in accordo con i dati sperimentali attualmente disponibili.
