Parchment stands for a multifaceted material made from animal skin, which has been used for centuries as a writing support or as bookbinding. Due to the historic value of objects made of parchment, understanding their degradation and their condition is of utmost importance to archives, libraries and museums, i.e., the assessment of parchment degradation is mandatory, although it is hard to do with traditional methodologies and tools for problem solving. Hence, in this work we will focus on the development of a hybrid decision support system, in terms of its knowledge representation and reasoning procedures, under a formal framework based on Logic Programming, complemented with an approach to computing centered on Artificial Neural Networks, to evaluate Parchment Degradation and the respective Degree-of-Confidence that one has on such a happening.

The last four decades have seen a dramatic increase in the number of women entering employment. This is particularly true in Europe and although more European women are working outside the home, the patterns of female employment have changed very little. An analysis of these patterns is presented. It was found that women continue to dominate specific fields, particularly teaching and service providing. An investigation of the interpersonal behavior differences among 117 American women from the southeastern United States in three work roles--homemakers, women in traditional occupations, and in nontraditional occupations--was conducted and the sex-role orientation, attitudes toward success, and demographic indicators were examined in order to consider the interplay of these variables with female occupational role and interpersonal behavior. A second focus of the study is on the cross-cultural comparison of the psychological and work variables in women of two different cultures: America and Portugal. Thirty-one Portuguese women were a preliminary comparison sample. The American results showed significant differences between groups in self-perceived interpersonal behaviors and the findings contradicted current stereotypes. The cross-cultural data, although preliminary, indicates differences between the countries in social desirability, aggressive and assertive behaviors, and in sex-role attitudes, which seem to reflect the different stages of economic development. OBJECTIVE: To characterize left ventricular regional myocardial function through tissue Doppler echocardiography in healthy adults and to assess the influence of aging in this function. METHODS: In 45 healthy volunteers divided in two groups (< 45 and > 45 years old) we assessed longitudinal and radial regional function (velocities, times intervals and velocity-time integrals). Data were compared in each group and between groups. RESULTS: Systolic function: a) longitudinal: higher velocities and integrals in lateral and inferior walls and in basal segments, with a trend to reduction of these parameters with aging; b) radial: higher basal velocities, no significant change with aging. Diastolic function: a) longitudinal: higher velocities in lateral and inferior walls and in basal segments. With aging e and e/a velocities and integrals decreased, a increased and older individuals showed lower percentage of segments with e/a >1; b) radial: aging was associated with lower e and higher a velocities. CONCLUSION: 1) Tissue Doppler echocardiography detects physiological differences between regional myocardial function of different ventricular segments, in velocities, times intervals and integrals, with physiological heterogeneity and asynchrony; 2) Many of these data are age dependent; 3) Our data contribute to define normal values, and may become useful when compared with data from populations with heart diseases.

Twenty-four masters swimmers participated in the study (42.0 ± 7.4 years, 1.74 ± 0.09 m, 74.8 ± 14.1 kg). Countermovement jump (CMJ) and 3 kg medicinal ball throwing (BM) were performed. At a 25 m swimming pool, each subject completed a maximal 50 m front crawl swim with in water start, 25 and 50 m performances (T25, T50) were recorded. Anaerobic critical velocity (AnCV) was determined by the slope of the distance-time relationship (Dd-t) in the two swimming distances. T25 and T50 (respectively 19.0 ± 2.7-sec and 38.8 ± 6.4-sec) were correlated with CMJ (27.2 ± 5.0 m) (respectively, r = -0.78 and -0.73, p < 0.01), and BM (4.3 ± 1.0 m) (r = -0.68 and - 0.58, p < 0.01). AnCV25,50 (1.31 ± 0.23 m.s-1 ) was correlated with T25 (r = -0.92, p < 0.01 ) and T50 (r = -0.98, p < 0.01). The strength parameters turn out to be important in aquatic performance in masters swimmers and AnCV may be relevant in the training of masters swimmers.

Undoubtedly, the decision is present in day-to-day for us all, regardless of the type of activity we are involved. In organizational life, we face many situations that require a momentary response, here called the immediate, which do not allow collection of adequate information, time for reflection, discussion and exchange of ideas, among other restrictions. Besides the limitations already mentioned by other authors, as the individual's cognitive capacity, processing power, there are other factors that influence the decision-making process, especially in environments under pressure and constantly changing, as is the Fire. This paper seeks to know which factors influence the decision making of professional firefighters with leadership roles in urban fire occurrences and accidents. In this context, we discuss some frameworks for decision making, as the Recognition-Primed Decision (RPD) Model by Gary Klein, among others. In order to further our investigation, two exploratory studies were conducted through personal interviews. The sample consists of 14 professionals, including firefighters with executive functions, commanders and union representatives. The results showed that the experience and training are factors that are evident, and influence the decision of the firefighters. We note that the Portuguese Firemen experience is a characteristic of decision-makers because they are options that will make high-risk. On the other hand, although the training to aim at the acquisition of professional skills, particularly in the area of decision, it needs updating, because it meets the needs of firefighters. We present also the main limitations of the study and suggestions for future investigations.

This study aimed to detect and analyse regular patterns of play in fast attack of football teams, through the combination of the sequential analysis technique and semi-structured interviews to experienced first League Portuguese coaches. The sample included 36 games (12 games of the respective national leagues per team) of the F.C. Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Manchester United teams that were coded with the observational instrument tool developed by Sarmento et al. (2010) and the data analysed through sequential analysis with the software SDIS-GSEQ 5.0. Based on the detected patterns, semi-structured interviews were carried out to 8 expert high-performance football coaches and data were analysed through the content analysis technique using the software NVivo 10. The detected patterns of play revealed specific characteristics of the teams under study. The combination of the results of sequential analysis with the qualitative interviews to the professional coaches proved to be very fruitful in this game the analysis of scope, allowing reconcile scientific knowledge with practical interpretation of coaches who develop their tasks in the field.

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário is located in the cloister of the São Bento de Cástris monastery and shows off a blue and white tile panel with 6 tiles of height, representing the scenes of the Life of the Virgin in five panels: Adoration of the Shepherds, Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, Annunciation, Visitation and The Marriage of the Virgin. The authorship of this work is unknown and its date has not yet found consensus. The tiles are in poor condition and have been the target of repeated vandalism or attempted theft over time. During the Residência Cisterciense (Cistercian Residence), held in São Bento de Cástris in September 2013, it has been made a survey of the tile panel’s observable damages including graphic and photographic record of its condition.

Filamentous fungi are a threat to the conservation of Cultural Heritage. Thus, detection and identification of viable filamentous fungi are crucial for applying adequate Safeguard measures. RNA-FISH protocols have been previously applied with this aim in Cultural Heritage samples. However, only hyphae detection was reported in the literature, even if spores and conidia are not only a potential risk to Cultural Heritage but can also be harmful for the health of visitors, curators and restorers. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate various permeabilizing strategies for their application in the detection of spores/conidia and hyphae of artworks’ biodeteriogenic filamentous fungi by RNA-FISH. Besides of this, the influence of cell aging on the success of the technique and on the development of fungal autofluorescence (that could hamper the RNA-FISH signal detection) were also investigated. Five common biodeteriogenic filamentous fungi species isolated from biodegradated artworks were used as biological model: Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium sp, Fusarium sp, Penicillium sp. and Exophialia sp. Fungal autofluorescence was only detected in cells harvested from Fusarium sp, and Exophialia sp. old cultures, being aging-dependent. However, it was weak enough to allow autofluorescence/RNA-FISH signals distinction. Thus, autofluorescence was not a limitation for the application of RNA-FISH for detection of the taxa investigated. All the permeabilization strategies tested allowed to detect fungal cells from young cultures by RNA-FISH. However, only the combination of paraformaldehyde with Triton X-100 allowed the detection of conidia/spores and hyphae of old filamentous fungi. All the permeabilization strategies failed in the Aspergillus niger conidia/spores staining, which are known to be particularly difficult to permeabilize. But, even in spite of this, the application of this permeabilization method increased the analytical potential of RNA FISH in Cultural Heritage biodeterioration. Whereas much work is required to validate this RNA-FISH approach for its application in real samples from Cultural Heritage it could represent an important advance for the detection, not only of hyphae but also of spores and conidia of various filamentous fungi taxa by RNA-FISH.
