In this work the quantitative theoretical treatment for two beam mode mismatched thermal lens spectrometry is applied to investigate the thermo-optical properties of chalcohalide (chalcolgenides and halides mixture) glasses. For the three kinds of glass studied the thermal diffusivity varied between 2.5 and 2.7 x 10(-3) cm(2) s(-1). Using these results and supposing Dulong-Petit specific heats we estimated the thermal conductivity and temperature ratio of optical path length (ds/dT) and temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT). All samples had positive ds/dT(similar to 3.3 x 10(-6) K-1) and negative dn/dT (similar to -26 x 10(-6) K-1). The difference between these parameters and the change of signal are consequences of the expansion coefficient (13 x 10(-6) K-1) and refractive index (n similar to 2.6) of chalcohalides. The lensing effects in diode end-pumped Yb:YAG laser rods and discs are studied. Two mechanisms of refractive-index changes are taken into account, thermal and electronic (due to the difference between the excited- and ground-state Yb polarisabilities), as well as pump-induced deformation of the laser crystal. Under pulsed pumping, the electronic lensing effect prevails over the thermal one in both rods and discs. In rods pumped by a highly focused cw beam, the dioptric power of the electronic lens exceeds that of the thermal lens, whereas in discs steady-state lensing is predominantly due to the thermal mechanism. © 2009 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

The induced lenses in the Yb:YAG rods and disks end-pumped by a Gaussian beam were analyzed both analytically and numerically. The thermally assisted mechanisms of the lens formation were considered to include: the conventional volume thermal index changes ("dn/dT"), the bulging of end faces, the photoelastic effect, and the bending (for a disk). The heat conduction equations (with an axial heat flux for a disk and a radial heat flux for a rod), and quasi-static thermoelastic equations (in the plane-stress approximation with free boundary conditions) were solved to find the thermal lens power. The population rate equation with saturation (by amplified spontaneous emission or an external wave) was examined to find the electronic lens power in the active elements.

Thermal diffusivity measurements are carried out in certain organic liquids using the pulsed dual beam thermal lens technique. The 532 nm pulses from a frequency doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser are used as the heating source and an intensity stabilized He-Ne laser serves as the probe beam. Experimental determination of the characteristic time constant of the transient thermal lens signal is verified theoretically. Measured thermal diffusivity values are in excellent agreement with literature values.

In rare earth ion doped solids, a resonant non-linear refractive index, n2, appears when the laser pumps one of the ion excited states and the refractive index change is proportional to the excited state population. In these solids there are usually thermal and non-thermal lensing effects, where the non-thermal one is due to the polarizability difference, Δα, between excited and ground states of the ions. We have used the time resolved Z-scan and a mode-mismatched thermal lens technique with an Ar+ ion laser in Er+3 (20ZnF2-20SrF2-2NaF-16BaF2-6GaF3-(36 - x)InF3-xErF3, with x= 1, 2, 3 and 4 mol%) and Nd+3 (20SrF2-16BaF2-20ZnF2-2GdF3-2NaF-(40 - x)InF3-xNdF3, with x = 0.1, 0.25, 0.5-1 mol%) doped fluoroindate glasses. In both samples we found that the non-linear refraction is due to the thermal effect, while the non-thermal effect is negligible. This result indicates that in fluoride glasses Δα is very small (less than 10-26 cm3). We also measured the imaginary part of the non-linear refractive index (n″2) due to absorption saturation.

We report on a simple and accurate method for determination of thermo-optical and spectroscopic parameters (thermal diffusivity, temperature coefficient of the optical path length change, pump and fluorescence quantum efficiencies, thermal loading, thermal lens focal length, etc) of relevance in the thermal lensing of end-pumped neodymium lasers operating at 1.06- and 1.3-mu m channels. The comparison between thermal lensing observed in presence and absence of laser oscillation has been used to elucidate and evaluate the contribution of quantum efficiency and excited sate absorption processes to the thermal loading of Nd: YAG lasers. A recently developed dual-beam configuration that optimizes the thermal lens technique has been used to obtain the absorption spectrum of pure water from 350 to 528 nm. Our results indicate the minimum linear absorption coefficient smaller than 2 X 10(-5) cm(-1) between 360 and 400 nm. This value is lower than previous literature data, and it is blueshifted. Absorption coefficients as small as 2 X 10(-7) cm(-1) can be measured for water using 1 W of excitation power. A detection limit of similar to 6 X 10(-9) cm(-1) (P=1 W) for CCl(4) was estimated, which represents, to the best of our knowledge, the highest sensitivity obtained in small absorption measurements in liquids. The thermal transport properties—thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity—of potassium selenate crystal have been measured through the successive phase transitions, following the photo-pyroelectric thermal wave technique. The variation of thermal conductivity with temperature through the incommensurate (IC) phase of this crystal is measured. The enhancement in thermal conductivity in the IC phase is explained in terms of heat conduction by phase modes, and the maxima in thermal conductivity during transitions is due to enhancement in the phonon mean free path and the corresponding reduction in phonon scattering. The anisotropy in thermal conductivity and its variation with temperature are reported. The variation of the specific heat with temperature through the high temperature structural transition at 745 K is measured, following the differential scanning calorimetric method. By combining the results of photo-pyroelectric thermal wave methods and differential scanning calorimetry, the variation of the specific heat capacity with temperature through all the four phases of K2SeO4 is reported. The results are discussed in terms of phonon mode softening during transitions and phonon scattering by phase modes in the IC phase.

The wavelength dependence of thermal lens signal from organic dyes are studied using dual beam thermal lens technique. It is found that the profile of thermal lens spectrum widely differ from the conventional absorption spectrum in the case of rhodamine B unlike in the case of crystal violet. This is explained on the basis of varying contribution of nonradiative relaxations from the excited vibronic levels.

The authors apply the theory of photothermal lens formation and also that of pure optical nonlinearity to account for the phase modulation in a beam as it traverses a nonlinear medium. It is used to simultaneously determine the nonlinear optical refraction and the thermo-optic coefficient. They demonstrate this technique using some metal phthalocyanines dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide, irradiated by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with 10 Hz repetition rate and a pulse width of 8 ns. The mechanism for reverse saturable absorption in these materials is also discussed.

Nano structured noble metals have very important applications in diverse fields as photovoltaics, catalysis, electronic and magnetic devices, etc. Here, we report the application of dual beam thermal lens technique for the determination of the effect of silver sol on the absolute fluorescence quantum yield (FQY) of the laser dye rhodamine 6G. A 532 nm radiation from a diode pumped solid state laser was used as the excitation source. It has been observed that the presence of silver sol decreases the fluorescence quantum efficiency. This is expected to have a very important consequence in enhancing Raman scattering which is an important spectrochemical tool that provides information on molecular structures. We have also observed that the presence of silver sol can enhance the thermal lens signal which makes the detection of the signal easier at any concentration.

Measurement of thermal lensing signal as a function of laser power made in Rhodamine B solutions in methanol give clear evidence of two photon absorption process within certain concentration ranges when 488 nm Ar+ laser beam is used as the pump source. Only one photon process is found to occur when 514 nm and 476 nm beams are used as the pump.

Nanocomposites of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) of different geometries (single wall, double wall, and multiwall; SWNT, DWNT, and MWNT) were prepared by in situ polymerization of ethylene on CNT whose surface had been previously treated with a metallocene catalytic system. In this work, we have studied the effects of applying the successive self-nucleation and annealing thermal fractionation technique (SSA) to the nanocomposites and have also determined the influence of composition and type of CNT on the isothermal crystallization behavior of the HDPE. SSA results indicate that all types of CNT induce the formation of a population of thicker lamellar crystals that melt at higher temperatures as compared to the crystals formed in neat HDPE prepared under the same catalytic and polymerization conditions and subjected to the same SSA treatment. Furthermore, the peculiar morphology induced by the CNT on the HDPE matrix allows the resolution of thermal fractionation to be much better. The isothermal crystallization results indicated that the strong nucleation effect caused by CNT reduced the supercooling needed for crystallization. The interaction between the HDPE chains and the surface of the CNT is probably very strong as judged by the results obtained, even though it is only physical in nature. When the total crystallinity achieved during isothermal crystallization is considered as a function of CNT content, it was found that a competition between nucleation and topological confinement could account for the results. At low CNT content the crystallinity increases (because of the nucleating effect of CNT on HDPE), however, at higher CNT content there is a dramatic reduction in crystallinity reflecting the increased confinement experienced by the HDPE chains at the interfaces which are extremely large in these nanocomposites. Another consequence of these strong interactions is the remarkable decrease in Avrami index as CNT content increases. When the Avrami index reduces to I or lower, nucleation dominates the overall kinetics as a consequence of confinement effects. Wide-angle X-ray experiments were performed at a high-energy synchrotron source and demonstrated that no change in the orthorhombic unit cell of HDPE occurred during crystallization with or without CNT.
