The miscibility and mechanical properties of the blends of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polypropylene (PP) with a liquid crystalline ionomer (LCI) containing a sulfonate group on the terminal unit as a compatibilizer were assessed. SEM and optical microscopy (POM) were used to examine the morphology of blends of PBT/PP compatibilized by LCI. DSC and TGA were used to discuss the thermal properties of PBT/PP blends with LCI and without LCI. The experimental results revealed that the LCI component affect, to a great extent, the miscibility and crystallization process and mechanical property of PBT/PP blends, The fact is that increasing LCI did improve miscibility of PBT/PP blends and the addition of 1% LCI to the PBT/PP blends increased the ultimate tensile strength and the ultimate elongation.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in poly(ethylene terephthalate)poly(ethylene oxide) (PETPEO) segmented copolymer and PEO homopolymer has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, as well as transmission electron microscope. The kinetics of PEO in copolymer and PEO homopolymer under nonisothermal crystallization condition has been analyzed by Ozawa equation. The results show that Ozawa equation only describes the crystallization behavior of PEO-6000 homopolymer successfully, but fails to describe the whole crystallization process of PEO in copolymer because the secondary crystallization in the later stage could not be neglected. Due to the constraint of PET segments imposed on the PEO segments, a distinct two stage of crystallization of PEO in copolymer has been investigated by using Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deal with the nonisothermal crystallization data. In the case of PEO-6000 homopolymer, good linear relation for the whole crystallization process is obtained owing to the secondary crystallization does not occur under our experimental condition. This work presents the structure and impact properties of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) blended with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (PES-C/UHMWPE) at different compositions. The addition of UHMWPE can considerably improve the Charpy and Izod impact strength of the blends. The fracture surface is examined to demonstrate the toughening mechanics related to the modified PES-C resin. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Blends of a liquid crystalline thermotropic copolyester (LCP70) and an amorphous phenolphthalein based poly(ether-ketone)(PEK-C) with two viscosities were prepared by melt blending. The blends' morphology, rheological and mechanical properties were investigated by DSC, SEM, mechanical and rheological tests. It was observed that the optimum composition of the PEK-C/LCP70 blend was 10 wt% LCP for both mechanical and rheological properties. When the LCP content was less than 10%, the LCP phase existed as finely dispersed fibrous domains with a diameter of about 1 mu m in the matrix, and both tensile and flexural properties were improved. In contrast, when the LCP content reached 20% or more, the LCP domains coalesced to ellipsoidal particles with a diameter of about 5 mu m, and the mechanical properties decreased as a result. It is demonstrated that pure PEK-C with a high viscosity which was difficult to process by melt extrusion, could be extruded conveniently when 10% LCP70 was incorporated. It is emphasized that LCP not only can be used as a reinforcing phase but also an effective processing agent for engineering thermoplastics, especially for those with high viscosity and narrow processing window. In this paper, unepoxidized ethylene propylene diene rubber (uEPDM) was first epoxidized with formic acid and H2O2, and then the epoxidized ethylene propylene diene rubber (eEPDM) was melt-mixed with PET resin in a Brabender-like apparatus. Toughening of PET matrix was achieved by this method. The dispersion of rubber particles and phase structure of the blends were also observed by SEM. It has been suggested that the epoxy groups in the eEPDM could react with PET end groups to form a graft copolymer which could act as an interfacial compatibilizer between the PBT matrix and eEPDM rubber dispersed phase. This is beneficial to the improvement of the impact performance of PBT. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Blends of poly (butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and epoxided ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EEPDM) were prepared. Their mechanical properties and morphology were studied by Izod impact test machine and scanning electronic microscope respectively, It was found that the notched Izod impact strength of blend PBT/EEPDM was as about 23 times as that of pure PET and about 10 times as that of blend PBT/EPDM at room temperature, The dispersed rubber particles were much smaller and the phase boundary was more blurred in blend PBT/EEPDM than in blend PBT/EPDM. The toughness of blend PBT/EEPDM was much more better than that of blend PET and PBT/EPDM, which was in good agreement with the difference between their morphologies.

Phase behavior, thermal, theological and mechanical properties plus morphology have been studied for a binary polymer blend. The blend is phenolphthalein polyethersulfone (PES-C) with a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP), a condensation copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with ethylene terephthalate (PHB-PET). It was found that these two polymers form optically isotropic and homogeneous blends by means of a solvent casting method. The homogeneous blends undergo phase separation during heat treatment. However, melt mixed PES-C/PHB-PET blends were heterogeneous based upon DSC and DMA analysis and SEM examination. Addition of LCP in PES-C resulted in a marked reduction of melt viscosity and thus improved processability. Compared to pure PES-C, the charpy impact strength of the blend containing 2.5% LCP increased 2.5 times. Synergistic effects were also observed for the mechanical properties of blends containing < 10% LCP. Particulates, ribbons, and fibrils were found to be the typical morphological units of PHB-PET in the PES-C matrix, which depended upon the concentration of LCP and the processing conditions.

Blends with a liquid-crystal polymers (LCP) as one component show, in general, very interesting properties. Reduction of shear visocity and improvement of mechanical properties are very remarkable. High melting temperatures and high costs of the LCP limit the use of these blends. A new class of thermotropic LCPs with flexible spaces, with relatively low melting temperatures, can overcome the first problem. In this work, rheological and mechanical properties of blends of polypropylene with low contents of this LCP are presented. Torque during extrusion and viscosity decrease with LCP content. Elastic modulus is remarkably increased when the LCP phase is oriented.

Melt electrospinning is one aspect of electrospinning with relatively little published literature, although the technique avoids solvent accumulation and/or toxicity which is favoured in certain applications. In the study reported, we melt-electrospun blends of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and an amphiphilic diblock copolymer consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) and PCL segments (PEG-block-PCL). A custom-made electrospinning apparatus was built and various combinations of instrument parameters such as voltage and polymer feeding rate were investigated. Pure PEG-block-PCL copolymer melt electrospinning did not result in consistent and uniform fibres due to the low molecular weight, while blends of PCL and PEG-block-PCL, for some parameter combinations and certain weight ratios of the two components, were able to produce continuous fibres significantly thinner (average diameter of ca 2 µm) compared to pure PCL. The PCL fibres obtained had average diameters ranging from 6 to 33 µm and meshes were uniform for the lowest voltage employed while mesh uniformity decreased when the voltage was increased. This approach shows that PCL and blends of PEG-block-PCL and PCL can be readily processed by melt electrospinning to obtain fibrous meshes with varied average diameters and morphologies that are of interest for tissue engineering purposes.
