We report x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation of RuSr2Eu1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 with ferromagnetic T-C similar to 100 K and a superconducting transition temperature of similar to 30 K compared with RuSr2EuCeCu2O10, which is a ferromagnetic (T-C similar to 150 K) insulator. Our results show that the rare earths, Eu and Ce, are in 3+ and 4+ states, respectively. Comparing the Ru core level spectra from these compounds to those from two Ru reference oxides, we also show that Ru in these ruthenocuprates is always in 5+ state, suggesting that the doped holes in the superconducting compound arising from the substitution of Ce4+ by Eu3+ are primarily in the Cu-O plane, in close analogy to all other doped high-T-C cuprates. Analysis of Cu 2p spectra in terms of a configuration interaction model provides a quantitative description of the gross electronic structures of these ruthenocuprates.

We report a simple modified polymeric precursor route for the synthesis of highly crystalline and homogenous nanoparticles of lanthanum calcium manganese oxide (LCMO). The LCMO phase formation was studied by thermal analysis, x-ray powder diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy at different stages of heating. These nanocrystallites (average particle size of 30 nm) possess ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature (T-c) of 300 K, nearly 50 K higher than that of a single crystal. The Rietveld analysis of the powder x-ray diffraction data of the nanopowders reveals significant lattice contraction and reduction in unit cell anisotropy-these structural changes are correlated to the enhancement in T-c.

A method has been suggested to accurately determine the DBTT of diffusion aluminide bond coats. Micro-tensile testing of free-standing coating samples has been carried out. The DBTT was determined based on the variation of plastic strain-to-fracture with temperature. The positive features of this method over the previously reported techniques are highlighted. The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of several series of cuprates shows a nonlinear dependence on the hole concentration, nh, determined by chemical titrations. The tc becomes maximum when nh is in the 0.12-0.15 range in cuprates containing a single Cu-O layer and around 0.2 in cuprates containing two Cu-O layers.

We describe an automated calorimeter for measurement of specific heat in the temperature range 10 K>T>0.5 K. It uses sample of moderate size (100–1000 mg), has a moderate precision and accuracy (2%–5%), is easy to operate and the measurements can be done quickly with He4 economy. The accuracy of this calorimeter was checked by measurement of specific heat of copper and that of aluminium near its superconducting transition temperature.

The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of a free-standing Pt-aluminide (PtAl) bondcoat was determined using the microtensile testing method and the effect of strain rate variation, in the range 10(-5) to 10(-1) s(-1), on the DBTT studied. The DBTT increased appreciably with the increase in strain rate. The activation energy determined for brittle-to-ductile transition, suggested that such transition is most likely associated with vacancy diffusion. Climb of aOE (c) 100 > dislocations observed in analysis of dislocation structure using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) supported the preceding mechanism.

An examination of the structure and superconducting properties of the various families of cuprates suggests several interesting structural commonalities. Relations between some of the structural parameters of the cuprates and the superconducting transition temperature, T-c, provide useful insights. Variations of T-c on the hole concentration, the in-plane Cu-O and the apical Cu-O distances, as well as the Madelung potentials and bond valence sums are particularly noteworthy. The Cu-O charge-transfer energy appears to be fundamental in determining the properties of cuprates.

Inelastic light scattering studies on a single crystal of electron-doped Ca(Fe0.95Co0.05)(2)As-2 superconductor, covering the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition as well as the magnetic transition at T-SM similar to 140 K and the superconducting transition temperature T-c similar to 23 K, reveal evidence for superconductivity-induced phonon renormalization. In particular, the phonon mode near 260 cm(-1) shows hardening below T-c, signaling its coupling with the superconducting gap. All three Raman active phonon modes show anomalous temperature dependence between room temperature and T-c, i.e. the phonon frequency decreases with lowering temperature. Further, the frequency of one of the modes shows a sudden change in temperature dependence at TSM. Using first-principles density functional theory based calculations, we show that the low temperature phase (T-c < T < T-SM) exhibits short-ranged stripe antiferromagnetic ordering, and estimate the spin-phonon couplings that are responsible for these phonon anomalies.

We have synthesized specimens of nanometric lead dispersion in a glassy Al-Cu-V matrix by rapid solidification of the corresponding melt. The microstructure has been designed to avoid superconducting percolation due to coupling of the neighboring particles by the proximity effect. Using these specimens, we have determined quantitatively the effect of size of the ultrafine lead particles on the superconducting transition. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. We report the variation of glass transition temperature in supported thin films of polymer nanocomposites, consisting of polymer grafted nanoparticles embedded in a homopolymer matrix. We observe a systematic variation of the estimated glass transition temperature T-g, with the volume fraction of added polymer grafted nanoparticles. We have correlated the observed T-g variation with the underlying morphological transitions of the nanoparticle dispersion in the films. Our data also suggest the possibility of formation of a low-mobility glass or gel-like layer of nanoparticles at the interface, which could play a significant role in determining T-g of the films provided. Nanocrystalline delta-NbNx samples have been synthesized by reacting NbCl5 and urea at three different temperatures. A comparison of their structural, magnetic, transport and thermal properties is reported in the present study. The size of the particles and their agglomeration extent increase with increasing reaction temperature. The sample prepared at 900 degrees C showed the highest superconducting transition temperature (T-c) of 16.2 K with a transition width, similar to 1.8 K, as obtained from the resistivity measurement on cold-pressed bars. Above T-c, magnetization measurements revealed the presence of surface ferromagnetism which coexists with superconductivity below T-c. Heat capacity measurements confirm superconductivity with strong electron-phonon coupling constant. The sample prepared at 800 degrees C shows a lower T-c (10 K) while that prepared at 700 degrees C exhibit no superconductivity down to the lowest temperature (3 K) measured.

Epitaxial La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) thin films are grown on LaAlO3 (100) and SrTiO3 (100) substrates by pulsed laser ablation. By tuning the growth parameters, we are able to enhance the ferromagnetic transition temperature (T-C) up to 262 K as evident from ac susceptibility, dc magnetization, and resistivity measurements. The magnitude of T-C is the same as that for the bulk stoichiometric LSCO illustrating the high quality of the grown films. Detailed structural analysis clearly reveals that the induced strain in the LSCO film has no role behind this enhancement; in fact, the determining factor is the oxygen stoichiometry. The films also exhibit ageing effect as the T-C decreases with time. This is considered in terms of gradual change in the oxygen stoichiometry through diffusion process as the time progresses. We present femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopic studies of a pseudogap (PG) along with the superconducting (SC) gap in an overdoped iron pnictide Ca(Fe0.927Co0.073)(2)As-2. It is seen that the temperature evolution of the photo-excited quasiparticle (QP) relaxation dynamics, coherently excited A(1g)-symmetric optical phonon and two acoustic phonon dynamics behave anomalously in the vicinity of the superconducting transition temperature T-c. A continuous change in the sign of the experimentally measured transient differential reflectivity Delta R/R signal at the zero time delay between the pump and probe pulses at a temperature of similar to 200K is inferred as an evidence of the emergence of the PG phase around that temperature. This behavior is independent of the pump photon energy and occurs for crystals without the spin density wave phase transition. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

We report inelastic light scattering experiments on superconductor Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 from 4K to 300K covering the superconducting transition temperature T-c similar to 48.6K. A strong evidence of the superconductivity induced phonon renormalization for the A(1g) phonon mode near 150cm(-1) associated with the Ce/Y vibrations is observed as reflected in the anomalous red-shift and decrease in the linewidth below T-c. Invoking the coupling of this mode with the superconducting gap, the superconducting gap (2 Delta) at zero temperature is estimated to be similar to 20meV i.e the ratio 2 Delta(0)/k(B)T(c) is similar to 5, suggesting Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 to belong to the class of strong coupling superconductors. In addition, the mode near 430cm(-1) associated with Ce3+ crystal field excitation also shows anomalous increase in its linewidth below T-c suggesting strong coupling between crystal field excitation and the superconducting quasi-particles.

Enhancement of superconducting transition temperature (T-c) of parent superconductor, Fe1+xSe, of `Fe-11' family by Cr-substitution for excess Fe has been motivated us to investigate the effect of Cr-substitution in optimal superconductor or Fe1+xSe0.5Te0.5 at Fe site. Here, we report structural, magnetic, electrical transport, thermal transport and heat capacity properties or Cr-substitute compounds. x-ray diffraction measurement confirms the substitution of Cr-atoms in host lattice. Magnetic and electrical transport measurements are used to explore the superconducting properties where Cr-substituted compounds show improvement in superconducting diamagnetic fraction with same T-c as undoped one Heat capacity measurement confirms the bulk superconducting properties of compounds. Thermopower measurement characterizes the type of charge carriers in normal state. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
